Day 15: Scott Costume
Obviously compared to T in general there is a much less range to choose from, however there are several top standouts. So I’m taking the opportunity to give some love to a very tippy top contender and a generally underrated/ not as widely appreciated performance: Their Paso Doble CD from 2009 Worlds.
(And in writing this post I’m actually regretting not doing this dress for T because it. is. STUNNING.. anyway.. next time)
This whole look for both of them is just *chefs kiss 💋. It’s a more understated look for a Paso, a lot of teams the guys went with the bedazzled jackets, super slick hair, which is a great look, but as I’ve said in a previous post talking about costumes, I like how TS were always more understated in a way that made them more… looking like humans in their performance environment. There’s no fancy lighting or sets to kind of absorb the wild costumes so it can be somewhat overwhelming and can consume the skaters- taking away from the actual athletics of their sport. But TS always dress with a balance of character and serving the aesthetics of their sport.
As was with most in the noughties his pants are a bit too full, too much fabric, but nothing much can be done about that, it was just the style back then. But that shirt is what we are really here to talk about. How beautiful is it?!! This picture doesn’t give it any justice and unfortunately I don’t think there are that many other pictures from this skate. So the best way to appreciate it is on video. The ruffles on the skirt are beautiful. So well made, the black piping to finish it off. But then I often forget there are ruffles on the wrists as well. It works so perfectly with her dress. Anything less and he would look underdressed next to her, but anymore and as I said it would be overwhelming. They have the most beautiful performance quality of any ID team ever so to take away from that with extravagant costumes as well would do them no justice. I have a soft spot for Scott always dressing minimalistly both for his own ease of movement, feeling comfortable to skating in and also most definitely not to take away from her, but I also love when he’s in something with a bit more to it because he has such a beautiful figure and his confidence on the ice- he never feels (or at least looks) self conscious. That confidence of course grew as they got older so by their final season they could totally own it and felt so empowered to step out of their comfort zone and disappear into new characters.

Kaitlin & Jean-Luc had a strong first senior season, 2014-15 - they had 2 GP assignments and won bronze at NHK, were 4th at Nationals and were sent to 4CC where they came in 5th. it's interesting to watch an excellent junior team transition to seniors - you can see them pressing a bit in the Paso Doble SD to skate bigger, maybe. but this Romeo & Juliet FD is very beautiful - the freedom and ease of expression they have together is one of their best qualities, and this is so lovely
youtube
they're doing more intricate lifts in this program than they've done in a while - which says size isn’t an issue, despite what some say about them - they could do these types of lifts- makes you wonder rather how much and how long they've been affected by injuries😔

To really bring back close holds judges would have to change the rules to incentivize teams to practice differently. To skate continuously in close hold requires a different approach to technique than is taught now. It's like the way the Finnstep is now compared to how it was as a CD. It's easy to do just enough to get through barely one round of the Finnstep; but to do 2 complete rounds while maintaining the size & speed of the CD pattern emphasizes different skating qualities.
I know you sent this a few days ago in response to my tags about close/closed holds, and while of course you are correct, you sent me on a spiral LOL - your ask totally had me thinking about the Finnstep in particular and next thing you know........
So, obviously, the last time that compulsory dances were used traditionally, was 2010. Patterns would be skated at least twice, but sometimes more than that, as it allowed the judges to see the technique more than once, and as you said anon, how the pattern held up after the skaters started getting tired. If you ever watch old programs, the commentators will often note when a pattern has significantly gotten smaller, which, because patterns have specific parts of the ice in which particular steps ought to be happening, indicates that the skaters are no longer skating as fast, and showing they aren’t getting the same power out of their strokes - everything shrinks down, and they won’t be as close to the boards anymore.
After the change from 6.0 to the COP scoring, but before the development of key points, compulsory dances were scored only on GOE (no levels, no required elements) and components . There has always been very detailed explanations for pattern dances about the edges that a skater must be on, but until the key points were introduced, it was... easier for judges to simply ignore if skaters had perhaps not quite gotten the edge right or the turn completely clean; it was the overall skate that made the mark.
Once key points were introduced, it became all about those few, specific moments that mattered, for the technical mark, and for many years, a lost level could determine the outcome of a loss or win, vs the GOE which had an impact, but was less likely to be the singular cause of a gold medal.
And meanwhile, of course, the pattern dances immediately began to be reduced in presentation; down to a single pattern, then down to part of the pattern. Compulsory dances were not ‘popular’, but they drilled those basics, and the correlation between the demise of the compulsory dance and the change to the expectations in ice dance cannot be ignored. (It does make me wonder, if, in retrospect, the skaters who were advocating for the dissolution of the compulsory dance at a senior level, regret that.)
Anyway, so I was looking back at 2009, and the Finnstep in particular. It was, at the time, a brand new pattern dance, and being competed for the first time that season. There was always multiple patterns used each season, with each competition determining its own choice between the options, so in the 2008/2009 season (Finnstep, Paso Doble, Viennese Waltz), the Finnstep was used only a couple of times. Obviously, as a VM fan, I know very well that 4CC used the Finnstep; but it was also used at Europeans. I concentrated there, as at the time, European teams were more likely to be considered as international medal contenders (though of course, 2008/2009 was also a season in which North American skaters also truly seemed to give notice that they were a force to be reckoned with.)
While researching, I found this commentary in a Goldenskate article about the event to be fascinating:
Faiella and Scali also delivered a very strong dance, but Scali faltered towards the end of the second pattern and the team did not receive any additional Grade of Execution (GOE) points for the last segment.
"There was a little stumble," explained Scali, "but I saved the twizzle. This is a difficult part of the dance. We arrive from the choctaw and we have to do a double twizzle, and maybe our position was too open and I wasn't ready to twizzle. It is one of the two or three critical parts of the dance, especially in the second pattern when you are tired." "This is the first compulsory dance where the man has to twizzle," noted Faiella.
It’s almost easy to forget that at the time, there was also the change-over from the skaters who grew up under 6.0 to the skaters who were used to the expectations derived from COP, and that twizzles were the bane of many 6.0 skaters’ existence. (Part of the COP in ice dance was to try and balance the workload and individual skating skills of a team, and there was often a disparity.)
As you can see here below, scoring for compulsory dances was broken down into three sections for each complete pattern, with the base value upon which the GOE was based increasing as the dance continued (to correlate with how it would be more difficult to compete as the team grew more tired).
Here you can see where Faiella/Scali were doing well (though not enough to take first place from Khokhlova/Novitski) until that last part of the pattern, where he had his stumble on that twizzle.
Meanwhile, Domnina/Shabalin, the team that would eventually win 2009 Worlds and be a serious 2010 Olympic podium threat (and eventually win bronze), finished fifth in the CD after he fell during the same section of the Finnstep and they withdrew after this section of the competition. (Yet, you can also see that while their GOE even leading up to the fall wasn’t on track for first, components scores were still extremely high.)
(On a side note - I’m always just a little shocked to look back and remember what it was like to have what were considered to be among the best skaters in the world at the time, and to not see a string of 10s in components, or perfect GOE from anyone! But that is a different and previously ranted about post.)
Just for comparison’s sake, I flipped over to watch VM and DW from 4CC that year; remembering that for every team, this was a brand new dance and for many, they didn’t have an excessive amount of time in which to practice it (they also had not only their normal ODs and FDs to practice, but the compulsories for any other competitions they were attending), and yet to me, the ease in which the younger teams were doing the twizzles in the dance was significant. But VM? I’m not sure I’d ever really compared there 2009 Finnstep to anyone else’s, but oh my, even with my bias, I have to say, they were, even with some small bobbles, truly much above anyone else. They were so smooth, so light, and so fast - any yet, with a ridiculously little amount of time to practice, as they were still coming back from Tessa’s first surgery.
And just to round it out, let’s do a regular reblog of mini VM, so confident and secure in their close and closed holds even as wee littles, they did an entire OD with one.

Have you ever seen WeaPo live??
Yes! The first time I saw them live was Skate Niagara in 2015. I’m from Niagara, the rink where the show was is about 5 minutes from my home so I had to go! They were incredible. They performed their Paso Doble SD from that year and one other program that is slipping my mind.
The second time I saw them was TTYCT St. Catharines a few months ago. Again, an amazing experience. This time, I was close to the front so I got to see them better. They skate so fast and their edges are amazing in person…the cameras don’t do them justice.
I also went to 2013 Canadians Nationals for the FD and Gala so my sister and I hoped to see them live then, but that was the year Kaitlyn broke her leg and so they didn’t skate. But they did come watch so my younger sister (who is a figure skater) got to meet WeaPo and take a photo with them. She was 8 at the time and idolized WeaPo (still does!). She had surgery around the same time Kaitlyn did and wasn’t allowed to skate so she talked to Kaitlyn about. Kaitlyn is the sweetest person! She was so down to earth, relating to my sister about their surgeries, and reassuring her that everything would be fine. Such an optimist!

Hi, love your post about the YOI fandom history! I disagree about the part saying the exhibition duet being based on Ice Dancing rather than Pairs though -- while the routine is probably a mishmash of both, it seems closer to Pairs rather than Ice Dance. 2 very important distinctions: "In ice dancing, dancers must always skate to music with a definite beat or rhythm" and "jumps are disallowed". Pairs is also closer in style to singles, rather than Ice Dance that is closer to ballroom dancing.
No. It’s Ice Dance.
I’ve touched on this briefly in past posts, and I’ve explained it enough to be sick of the repetition, so I’ll just do a full post here and be done with it.
Yuuri starts the EX program doing the Singles version of Stammi Vicino (Victor’s “Aria” program from the prior season) which is why we see jumps. However, when Victor comes onto the ice, the routine switches to Ice Dance choreography weaved between the existing step sequence/choreo sequence of Aria. Literally the arguments you used are what make this EX an Ice Dance routine instead of Pairs. For reference, here’s the referee&judges handbook, and the technical panel handbook. Let me write out the basic distinctions:
1. There are no throws, jumps, or death spirals in ice dance (these are Illegal Elements/Movements. Technical Panel handbook pg98).
2. The point of contact for lifts must be held no higher than the head of the one lifting (technical panel handbook pg98) – although you’ll notice most ice dance lifters holding the point of contact at or below shoulder-height.
3. Partners must skate either in hold or, if separation is required for the element, as close to each other as possible with no more than 2 arms length apart. (referee&judges handbook pg 2 for SD; pg 9 for FD) Even in the No Touch Step Sequence, partners should skate no more than 2 arms length apart (technical handbook pg 83).
4. The definite rhythm applies more strictly to competition programs - specifically the Short Dance where the dance patterns (European waltz, foxtrot, paso doble, midnight blues, hip hop, etc.) are assigned and rotated every year.
You can check out this season’s requirements here. Of the 24 main rhythms and any additional rhythms, the two for this season’s SD are Blues (skater’s choice for which Blues type they want, but some Midnight Blues steps must be used), AND Hip Hop or Swing.
For the Free Dance, the dance has more leeway - while the song needs to have a beat of some sort (i.e. you can’t dance to the sound of wind), there is no restriction on tempo (beats per minute), or the type of rhythm used. Instead, the FD consists of a balance of required elements such as twizzles, the number of dance lifts (short and combination lifts), the style of step sequences (straight and curved), and the types of choreographic elements allowed.
Furthermore, EX have even less restrictions (check out these EX: Tessa&Scott 1, Meryl&Charlie 2, Shibutani Sibs 3). Note that just because the rules are less restrictive for exhibition skates, doesn’t mean they add higher lifts, throws, or jumps in the name of freedom – this is because it takes training to be able to do different elements like those.
Pairs may be closer to Singles because it has jumps and is less dance-like, but that doesn’t have anything to do with deciding an individual skater’s EX. Yuuri is known for step sequences and dance styles - Ice Dance would be just as fitting for him with his dance background. It’s also very notable that an ice dance was chosen instead of a Pairs routine, because Yuuri and Victor had their first significant connection via ballroom dancing at the Sochi GPF banquet (paso doble). Seeing the series end with a dance on ice is very poetic.
If that isn’t enough, here’s the link to the Ice Dance routine that was used as reference for the Duet choreography: Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir 2016 GPF FD. If you have trouble with Dailymotion, here’s the one YouTube video that wasn’t muted or pitched to avoid copyrighting (the commentary here can be a bit distracting, though.) And here are side-by-side comparison gifs.
In fact, Ice Dance influences YOI in one more area: Hiramatsu (the character designer who adapted Kubo-sensei’s initial drawings) mentioned that he references ice dance routines for the cover illustrations of the DVD/BD boxes.
Pairs certainly is the more well-known of the partners skating disciplines, but that doesn’t mean it’s used all the time, and it’s lamentable that this notoriety allows Ice Dance to be dismissed. We shouldn’t be so set on the idea of “Pairs” that we assume it is performed unless proven otherwise.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.
