Checking Accounts — Where do you even begin?

Where are all my teenager at? I know you are out there. Give me three minutes, I mean it only three minutes to talk to you about something that is actually more important than the amount of likes on the picture you just posted. What could be more important than that you might ask, well I am here to tell you. Drum Roll Please…… (insert drum roll) CHECKING ACCOUNTS. Stop. Do NOT exit this blog, or stop reading. This is important stuff and if you hang with me I know you will be glad you did. 

So lets deal with the first issue at hand, why are they important? There are 2 reasons (actual so many more but just go with it) why these things are helpful and I am going to tell you them right here and right now. Number 1. If you haven’t already, one day you are going to get a job and when said job tries to pay you I promise you they are not going to hand you a wad of cash (I know disappointing) … however what they will do is one of 2 things. Hand you a Paper Check or ask for your direct deposit information. AND without a checking account neither of those will be an option for you. SO unless you like working for free I would say its time to jump on the checking account train. Reason #2, I hate to tell you this but its true… after you get the said job that we just talked about you are going to have to start paying bills. I know I know, it’s as bad as you have imagined but HEY its a part of life. So when that time comes again… your cell phone company, internet company, even Netflix… all these places are not going to accept a lump of cash. They want checks or online payments and neither of those things can happen with out a, yep you got it… checking account. 

Okay so now that you know it is important to have a checking account lets take the next step. Actually getting one. Luckily this is the easy part. Any bank that you drive by can offer a checking account. With that being said your best option is to do one that is local, and family friendly. If you are in the Lancaster area (like me) I would recommend Members 1st FCU. Here is why, you do not need to pay them anything to get it started. There are no minimum balances (meaning your first job does not need to make you a millionaire right of the bat) AND they have a ton of branches all over central PA so when you go visit Great Aunt Sue for Christmas and she writes you your Christmas check, you can head right to the bank and deposit it in your very own account.

SPRINGFIELD — Freedom Credit Union (FCU), headquartered in Springfield and serving members in the four counties of western Massachusetts and Hartford and Tolland counties in Connecticut, is warning the public of emerging sweetheart scams.

According to data from the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Sentinel Network, more than $200 million was reported lost last year by 20,000 individuals falling victim to online schemers. In comparison, 8,500 people filed claims of $33 million in losses in 2015.

Sweetheart scammers, also commonly referred to as romance scammers or catfishers, prey on individuals looking for love or companionship online. By creating phony online profiles and backgrounds, these individuals forge relationships by gaining trust and then seeking monetary gain. Often, an emergency will be fabricated; creating a storyline and opportunity to request money from the unsuspecting victim.

“Internet dating sites have become increasingly popular, especially during the early spring months, with people spending more time inside and with more free time,” explained FCU President Glenn Welch. “With so much at stake, we want to raise awareness to protect members of our community from falling prey.”

Welch offered the following signs of a potential scam. The individual:

Professes love or affection quickly;

Asks to move the conversation off the chat or dating website;

Requests money or gifts to handle an emergency medical bill or travel expense;

Offers to meet in person, but always offers an excuse as to why they must cancel plans.

“It’s never wise to send gifts or money to someone you’ve never met,” warned Welch. “While it’s possible that online relationships can develop into real life relationships, it’s best to be cautious of individuals who seem too good to be true, or who ask for gifts of money for situations that seem outlandish.”

Consumers who believe they’ve been a victim of a sweetheart scam can report the incident to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. For the latest updates from Freedom Credit Union, visit freedom.coop.
