you cannot tell me that after cameron and sloane separate from ferris at the parade and cam grabs sloane’s hand to pull her out of the crowd that they don’t continue to hold hands during their conversation about the future? it’s never fully panned down to show it but the way they’re walking that close to one another with cam’s arm overlapping hers? you cannot tell me that they’re not both nonchalantly still holding hands while both of them are yelling inside their heads to not make a big deal out of it so neither of them acknowledge it until sloane separates from cam to hug him... you Cannot

y’know despite how much i think cameron is tormented by the fact that he’s in love with ferris and sloane (for a multitude of reasons: not wanting to ruin their friendship, not feeling he’s deserving of their love... etc.) he would always choose to love them. not only because they are so unendingly lovable, not only because he doesn’t have a choice, but because despite it all, they’re the ones he would risk it for. even if it would end badly (it wouldn’t, of course), he’s willing to let them know, because he loves them enough to. ultimately, there’s a fondness in his heart that goes along with it, too. because his love is so strong, because it means that, really, truly, they are so wonderful to him. it’s instinctual, and it’s what they deserve, but it’s the expression of what he’s always known. they’re everything to him, and by loving them it proves what they are to him.

gd there is something so lovely about interpreting the post pool scene/jacuzzi scene as something bordering on confession, in which sloane and ferris want cameron to make the first move. not only does it make sense to me given the way it plays out (consider: the subtle gazes full of something between ferris and sloane and towards cameron when he’s giving his spiel about how much the day, and subsequently how much they mean to him; but also when sloane asks “cameron, can i ask you a question?” how ferris looks at her with a bit of surprise and eagerness at what she might say, since according to my interpreted plan they’d be the one’s waiting for him, so he’s curious of if she’s straying from that plan; and of course, the light that comes over them when he says how much the day meant to him and that he’s going to miss them, both in softness but also in hope that he’s leading up to expressing his feelings, and then the patient silence that comes afterward when he doesn’t say anything more that maybe they should be the ones to break it), but there’s a mutual understanding that they know has got to be brewing inside of him, but given the circumstances they don’t want to absolutely freak him out again. (and i’m unsure if there was a blatant planning of this day to hopefully jumpstart something evident between them, i’m thinking no but the consideration does pop up as an opportune time as the day draws to a close by all three of them). ultimately it’s the film’s fault because it’s almost insane to consider that cameron doesn’t take this chance by the end, but like, heterosexuality and monogamy or whatever. but despite cameron not taking that chance, there’s room for that somewhere too, since i think despite any signs the two could give him that they share this feeling for him, cameron’s going to find a way to rationalize those signs, or be too indecisive or afraid to ruin such a solid friendship that they have. but it does make my heart happy to consider that there is both something entwined in all three of them that flickers with the consideration to let their feelings out, especially when it’s so easy to interpret the scene that way.

okay i’m suddenly feeling a lot of fondness about a very miniscule thing in fbdo but i’m gonna talk about it anyway. i’m thinking about the exchange that cameron and sloane have during the parade scene, in which cam laments about the differences between him and ferris. the thing is, he doesn’t seem to be bitter about this at all, at least not towards ferris. sure, it upsets him, at least somewhat, but it’s more an observation of himself than anything else. rather than harboring the differences between them and having them fuel some sense of resentment, it evidently doesn’t seem to detract from the clear love he has for ferris. it’s something cam has to get out more than anything else, barely even manifesting into something he wants for himself. he doesn’t want to be ferris, he doesn’t want to have what ferris has, he just wants to be different, or at least a little more sure of both himself and everything around him. it’s never gonna make him hate ferris, because it probably stares him in the face almost every time they’re together. no matter what, no matter how much he’s aware of how different they are and how unalike he is from that wonderful, magical quality that ferris possesses, it’s never gonna fester into something more and turn into hate. and that’s clear, because moments later there’s that same fondness that he can share with sloane, that unavoidable awe that comes with him. and i love sloane’s response to him too, because she’s only trying to support him, just offering even the smallest shred of stability both in offering a potential solution and then ultimately joining him in the complete lack of. but she’s there for him completely, even in the silence and just the ability she has to listen (and then in her hugging him which not only is her being there for him physically but once again joining him in the acceptance of their clearly shared lack of a sense of direction), she’s not trying to convince him to be anyone else. she’s not criticizing this in ferris either, of course, because both of them know it to be true like the back of their hands. she doesn’t need cameron to be like ferris or for ferris to avoid being this for the sake of helping cameron feel better--she has no need to, anyway, it’s not an issue for cam either--instead, after offering some guidance, accepting the things that ultimately make cameron who he is. and this, the differences between them and the acceptance of what makes these lines clear, is exactly what’s meant to be. there’s joy in allowing these things to exist, because why would they, really, dwell on the things that they could be fond about instead?

halloween headcanons for everyone’s (or at least my own) favorite ot3!
i’m approaching this with the au in place that they don’t start dating until the summer after senior year/a few weeks up to a month after the events of the film! so they don’t really do the high school party thing in their relationship! that being said, ferris and sloane did go to a few halloween parties while dating in hs, and were always known for their couples costumes that Obviously only a bi guy and girl could pull off! consider: they went as romeo and juliet one year, wearing clothing that resembled shakespearean dress. that’s all you need to know about these two giantic and obnoxious dorks who are literally perfect for one another and also cooler than the population of their high school.
when it comes to halloweens in their relationship though, they tend to stick to themselves/a night in! when they’re in college they sort of try the whole party thing, but it’s really not cameron’s scene, so they sorta abandon it! if the two are really itching to go to a party though, cam will stay home and prep their own party in his dorm while they go out for a bit!
what their parties entail: halloween music! these three love their dance parties, so they always need a soundtrack! the classics everyone loves! the monster mash! psycho killer! highway to hell! werewolves of london! also, horror/halloween movies! none of them are scared of them, although cam can be slightly squeamish when it comes to gore and blood, but he sucks it up most of the time. they end up watching campy halloween flicks more often than not, they’re ferris’s favorite! sloane has a love-hate relationship with slasher movies (hate mostly for the ones that exploit their female protagonists) but she likes the more classic ones! i think that ferris is very adamant about how anti-feminist and sexist a lot of horror movies are, even moreso than sloane is, and it makes cam and sloane laugh. of course they agree, but there’s something totally hilarious about pausing a movie mid-way through only for ferris bueller to rant to you about anti-feminist movies. i think cameron likes thrillers the best! they always have a good time with paranormal movies too. movies bring the Best out of chatty ferris, and they don’t mind, because out of any movie to talk during, why wouldn’t it be during a horror movie in which you bond in yelling hopelessly for the protagonist to make a better decision? fun fact! they all like watching it’s the great pumpkin, charlie brown together early in the evening. it’s a childhood staple for all three of them, and they like to prepare themselves by making big mugs of tea/cocoa/apple cider beforehand, putting on their comfiest sweaters, and cozying up on the couch!
candy preferences!!!!! idk why this brings me so much joy to think about but it does! first off, ferris has an ADAMANT hatred of candy corn. the first time sloane brings it home it becomes a huge Thing because of course, everything is a Thing with ferris. sloane doesn’t really see what the problem is, but this sends ferris into a giant spiel about how much it sucks, which ends with cameron annoyingly trying to hit ferris with said candy corn to shut him up. cameron won’t eat a lot of it anyway because it’s so sugary, so sloane doesn’t find it worth it to get any because it’d just be her having it. however, it becomes an inside joke every subsequent holiday, sloane taunting him with a small amount she’s acquired somewhere. ferris likes chocolate-y candy the best, cameron prefers chocolate candies with caramel, and sloane likes peanut butter and chocolate the best!
costumes! i touched on this slightly in the first hc but i honestly don’t think the trio are going to dress up in costume if they’re just sitting in cam’s dorm/are at home. it’s a thing if they’re having friends over (or if jeanie comes to visit! they like to go full out for her if she’s coming) or if they go out, but it’s not the usual. instead, they still wear like, halloween attire/themed clothing and obviously spend time in their thoroughly decorated living room. if they do dress up, i’ve thought of a few costumes i definitely think they’d try their hand at! i definitely think one year cameron dresses up like a vampire/dracula and like. yes these sweeties are always aware of how beautiful their partners are but the fact that he looks So starkly different from how he normally shocks them in the best way because he looks so awesome and so handsome. almost immediately, after they process their initial shock of how different cam looks, sloane and ferris begin a bit about how they’re just two innocent strangers who somehow showed up at his castle and they “really hope they don’t get turned into vampires by this tall handsome and brooding stranger!” this continues until they’re just hanging out on the couch and watching a movie when ferris lays his head on cam’s shoulder and sloane shouts that his neck is exposed, so she has to “kill” him by stabbing him in the heart with a stake before he turns ferris into a vampire, it’s so incredibly dramatic but cam loves every second of it. as suggested by my friend jon, i think ferris as a zombie baseball player would be a fantastic look. honestly, ferris as any type of jock would definitely make cam and sloane swoon, even though cameron is technically the jock out of the three of them. while this is mildly self indulgent just because i think sloane would rock a suit, i think if sloane went as a magician one year, complete with a top hat of course, i think she’d have so much fun with it! generally i think sloane likes to have a lot of fun with her costumes, and likes to get them super accurate to whatever she’s portraying. i also think that costumes for three people are a bit hard to come by, but for shits i’m gonna explore the advanced taste if the three of them went as brian, sally, and maximillian from cabaret. i think it’d be especially fun if cameron was brian, since technically ferris should be since he’s the one who has a lasting relationship with sally, but let’s be honest with ourselves. who suits a suave stranger like max more than ferris?
traditions! i touched on this also a bit earlier, but i think the trio generally love cooking for one another, so i think they make it a point to make things extra special on holidays! they all probably contribute to cooking the various parts of meals together, but usually one of them (most likely sloane, she’s precise with measurements that baking requires whereas ferris likes to have more fun improvising when cooking) will make dessert! it’s almost always pumpkin cookies, but sometimes a pie will make an appearance! also, i think because these three are incredibly sentimental, a holiday absolutely calls for photos together, even during their mundane halloweens spent at home. they’re brandishing their jack-o-lantern’s, making sure there’s evidence of their costumes when they dress up, and if jeanie is coming over it’s a must. they like having photos of them with her. no one’s quite as much of family as she is! expanding on jeanie, i think if jeanie does come to visit, chances are (it’s a fun spin on a headcanon i made not too long ago) she brings the bueller dog who she’s firmly taken in to their apartment and they end up walking him all together around the neighborhood, admiring the decorations and saying hello to any kids who might be passing through there trick-or-treating! (also jeanie acts like she’s too cool for this, but she’s definitely got some sort of costume on this dog. there’s no way around it.)

▼- i know this is like. late and sorry bout that but let's have those ferris childhood headcanons!!!!
- okay this one is silly but. ferris was absolutely a dinosaur kid. i’m sorry i just can’t not imagine a bright eyed young ferris with a dinosaur obsession. it just makes sense!
- i’m going to also talk about fer and cam’s friendship origins because!!! childhood friends!!! i think ferris was pretty much friends/friendly with every person in his classes growing up, but i think cam was maybe the new kid in fifth grade. (i read/heard somewhere that apparently cam’s howe jersey is representative of his grandfather, who either gifted it to him or it was his favorite team so cam likes it a lot, and i believe his grandfather was from michigan! so i think cam moves from michigan to illinois in the summer before/the fall of their fifth grade year). i think ferris immediately perks up because hey! new friend! but i think of course cam was quite shy and pretty closed off, but fer could already tell that cameron was really smart and was sorta in awe of that, but also saw that he didn’t really have anyone trying to be friends with him. so of course, our lovely ferris decides, hey, you’re gonna be my friend! i mean, obviously in like, a more nonchalant way, maybe commenting on how good at science cam is and giving him the classic, cheery smile, and eventually asking him questions about his life in michigan and whatnot. cam is very surprised that someone this rambunctious wants to talk to him, but he’s not mad about it. eventually ferris is like “you don’t seem to have many friends. but you seem really nice and smart, i don’t know why someone wouldn’t want to be friends with you. do you wanna be my friend?” and im CERTAIN by the end of the week ferris is ALREADY calling cameron his best friend, and they’re inseparable ever since.
- i also think immediately after he meets cam he can’t help but tell his family about it, and also within the week he’s invited to ferris’s house for dinner. he meets jeanie here too, and i’d love to make a separate post about jeanie and cam as childhood friends!
- in reference to something i talked a bit about before, i think ferris is both a very protective kid and also surprisingly sensitive. it’s something his parents are really proud of, i mean who doesn’t want their kid to like, actually be emotionally competent, but i think they’re--in the most parent way possible of course--like ‘isn’t our boy just the sweetest? he’s so kind and sensitive!’ i think this comes out the most when (yes i know this is a bit heart wrenching but as a kid who got bullied for being disabled growing up, having someone stand up for me really would’ve been everything to me and i think this is very accurate to them) people pick on cam for being disabled. i don’t think it happens that often but the first time it does ferris isn’t actually there, but cameron’s acting out of it and he is absolutely going to pry to find out what’s wrong. cameron of course says it’s nothing, but to ferris looking like that absolutely means it isn’t nothing, and when cam gets it out ferris is absolutely just. incoherent with anger. he feverishly asks cam like, hey, don’t you have a baseball bat somewhere at your house? i could give these jerks something to actually complain about. luckily, ferris doesn’t actually y’know, use a baseball bat on anyone, the thought literally horrifies cameron because there really is no need for that, but since then every time when ferris does witness people picking on cam he’s immediately, without question, taking up as must space as possible and yelling in their faces to never, ever do that again. and yes, he starts angry crying midway through but everyone is too taken aback to even say anything about that. it’s a pretty effective strategy, because they’re so stunned that ferris could even be that angry. eventually when they get older cameron lets ferris know that he can pick his own battles, because especially once they’re teenagers it’s more about snarky comments anyway, but ferris always has the metaphorical baseball bat in hand just in case.
- also while this doesn’t relate only to child ferris, but i think he hates having people see him cry. i think the only people he really feels comfortable crying around is cameron (and eventually sloane), so i think when cameron notices ferris crying he feels really touched, because he forgot all about that for a moment and kept going. the two talk about it later and eventually they’re both cheering each other up, walking with their arms around each other like they always do and cracking jokes so that maybe if one of them stops crying the other will too.
- i touch on this in one of my wips, but i think cam and ferris both liked baseball as kids! i think ferris thinks its cool that cameron also plays hockey! (because i think that cam played hockey as a kid as well).
- i also think that ferris was also one of those kids who was always in plays in elementary school, and of course was more enthusiastic than almost half the students. but it didn’t really matter, he always did so well and his parents were always very proud of him.
- i don’t think ferris was the most amazing student ever, but i also think he did/does have a pretty funny knack of remembering hype specific facts about very niche things. i think cam actually does that too, although it’s more stuff about medicine. when sloane meets the both of them i think she’s surprised because it’s so funny how both of them do that. i think cameron’s always willing to help ferris in school, (i’ve said this before too), especially with science, and the same thing with sloane. although the two sorta tag team it at points to help fer out!
- in that same vein, while he wasn’t/isn’t the best student, he was often called a model student because if nothing else, ferris is completely a team player and will participate in just about anything! (“why can’t you be a team player like ferris is?)
- i think while his kid room is a lot different than his teenage room, it’s still incredibly filled to the brim with posters and knickknacks! i honestly think cameron was a bit in awe the first time he saw it because... yeah his parents never really let him express himself much in regards to decorating his room.  what starts with “how do you have so many... things?” ends in cam talking about his home life, and honestly i think that these two trusted one another so much in the very beginning that honestly it didn’t matter that they’d only known each other for like, a week.
- yet again, something else i touch on in writing but i think this prompts the establishment that they don’t really keep anything from each other. similarly, i also think, like many kids do, they seal everything important to each other with a promise.

hello here are some thoughts about cameron frye as a baseball player because. hi their high school is cool enough for a baseball team i just decided this. (or, more accurately, sloane and ferris and their thoughts about cameron as a baseball player).
anyway! i think cameron joins the team in junior year. i Also think that maybe, perhaps, sloane develops a little bit of a crush on him through this. she’s a cheerleader, so she’s a bit more tuned into the athletes at school than normally she would prefer, but she doesn’t seem to mind when it comes to a certain one that seems to cross her path enough for her to notice. eventually, this leads her to go to a few games, or, in her thoughts, scout out the place. the first time she decides to do so her parents are very confused, to which she replies “what? i like baseball!” “sure you do, sweetie.” it’s not a total lie, though. she enjoys it if it’s there. she prefers it to football, anyway. this is also where she meets ferris for the first time, because, like any devoted best friend would be, he attends every home game that cameron has. (and other games that aren’t at the school if they’re big ones). they become seated next to one another and hit it off immediately, although she can’t quite make the flush leave her face when she suddenly remembers that ferris is best friends with the player that catches her eye. unbeknownst to her, however, is that under the guise of school spirit, ferris has begun to drag them both to football games, that may happen to feature a very pretty cheerleader. that night, after they win, of course, ferris meets up with cameron after the game, with sloane tagging along since ferris bueller is nothing if he isn’t friendly. without hesitation he introduces cameron to her. they also hit it off very easily, because again, ferris has a very good, and very specific, taste in friends. eventually, this morphs into sloane attending games hoping that she runs into two specific boys. and regardless of where she sits, ferris ends up finding her, with his sweet, boyish grin that lights up her insides. and regardless of if they win, he leads her to find cameron after the game, and more easily than anything’s been done, they all end up catching each other’s eyes in school and making plans outside of school. and she soon discovers that cameron is so much more than a baseball player because finally her image of him on the field connects to the one she sees in the library, and he is so sentimental and genuine and smart, and absolutely one half of ferris bueller. and suddenly, football games and baseball games are a regular occurrence, ones that involve scouting out the crowd for the faces that they know will be in the stands, and pausing for a moment to give them a knowing smile in their direction. and pausing to listen for the cheers that are the loudest.

now, this is all for kicks, because obviously i can’t definitively say that any of these things are true in any way, but it’s a fun way for me to interpret the film that puts some meaning into something i’m otherwise not all that fond of!
so, what if... the minimal/sparse dialogue between ferris, sloane, and cameron in ferris bueller’s day off was intentional, as a metaphor for repressed feelings/uncertainty regarding their shared feelings for one another?
consider: the scenes that tend to irk me the most that there is nowhere near  enough conversation in them versus the ones that suit it. look, everyone knows that there is a bunch of comfortable silence in the conversations with people we know best. i absolutely find that there’s something significant in their silence in the moments that make sense, like when sloane is listening to cameron talk about ferris and lamenting about his future, or when ferris and sloane are listening to cameron describe his thought process during his breakdown. they’re lending a listening ear for support, letting cameron fully express his thoughts without interruption. in these moments, a lack of conversation can also signify how much they understand one another, how they don’t have to speak to convey that they understand, leaving space or a soft smile to indicate that they are still, very much here for him. however, to combat how much i resent the lack of conversation in other parts of the film, i’m going to consider lack of conversation as indicative of hesitation!
probably some of my most favorite moments in this film are in this category. cameron’s “it’s the best day of my life” spiel and the moments afterward, when cameron takes his anger out on the car, the infamous pool scene... some of the most emotional parts of the movie! but what gets me is how much space there is between the three of them conversationally. they do what they need to, they say what they need to to move the scene along, along with this space i wish was filled with words of concern or especially, a confession of feelings. out of all of these, the pool scene is the one i have the most leeway with. half of the reason they don’t talk much during this is like... pure shock. even afterwards, they’re probably still reeling, so i can’t really blame them. (rescuing your best friend from drowning certainly isn’t conducive to stimulating conversation, i get it). but when it comes to these emotionally charged moments of cameron spilling quite a lot of his feelings and potentially even secrets to them, while ferris and sloane are still so insanely receptive to his emotions here, it’s difficult to wrap my mind around these intentional pieces of silence that seem so lengthy and almost need to be filled? again, i love comfortable silence and i think between these three it’s really indicative of their mutual understanding of one another, but i can definitely interpret these as a potential space to be filled, but not set in stone if they will be. first: the moments after cameron telling sloane and ferris “it’s the best day of my life.” there’s a pause here, we get to see the two of them glowing with soft fondness after cam says that. cam then furthers his sentiments, claiming “i’m gonna miss you guys next year.” while it is a grim recognition of their future once again, it’s not met with any sort of fondness, even as it indicates just how much they really do mean to him. instead, there’s that strange sense of stillness, where ferris and sloane look equally deep in thought, sort of stuck in the in-between. in some way, i think cameron’s also in an in-between. interpreting this as a potential confession point makes a lot of sense, and i think eventually because it’d be very difficult in my mind for cam to ever rationalize that how he feels about the two of them could be reciprocated in any way. hence, he’s leaving space. he’s said what he needed to, and in some way, has given the best that he can muster of his own confession. both, a thank you for what they’ve given him today (which, in all honesty, aside from the more blatant forcing/encouraging him to let loose and have fun with them is just that, a fun day with them), and an acknowledgement of the future ahead, which is one without them, and subsequently how much that really hurts. it’s brief, it’s subtle, but it’s the closest thing to ‘i love you’ that he can manage, and in some way, it feels like that’s what he meant. but it’s over with, so there’s the silence left for them to fill. and they don’t fill it. maybe, since it’d be the icing on the cake of pretty earth-shattering events of the day, and there’s no reason to freak cameron out further, but there’s a sense here that there’s something so much more brewing between the both of them, almost as if it were the same exact thought. if the silence is worth penetrating. it makes sense, then, why ferris looks to sloane so quickly, almost surprised, when she breaks it when asking cameron if she can ask him a question. because they were so locked in hesitation, even if they’ve already confirmed with the other that they both feel the same. because cameron’s giving them something so close but not quite, and it makes it so much more real and that much harder to get it out. and the same can be said for cameron’s wrecking of the car. while the body language almost says everything it needs to during this scene, indicating how much sloane and ferris really are receptive to cameron’s emotions, and how much it really hurts to hear these things and see him in this position. they’re stuck. this time, in agony, in shock, in realization, in honest concern and pain down to how sloane turns away at one point, and how frozen ferris feels, only ever reacting to stop sloane from interfering. and they say nothing. nothing, because it’s even more too much for one day, because cameron has been through enough already, and because it hurts enough already, and because he deserves the space. but then they’re interrupted once more, and it’s with the deafening roar of the car shattering glass and then crashing. and then there’s the minimal amount of speaking, once again in shock, but that’s because (and perhaps like the car itself) the moment has passed. there’s only room left to express concern in the smallest amount of ways (like ferris offering to take the blame for cameron), or sloane asking ferris if cam will be okay (considerably after-the-fact), because they’ve lost their chance. they couldn’t muster up the courage, couldn’t decide, couldn’t face the reality stinging their faces of just how wrong, maybe, this could go. so they’re left. and it gets redeemed, of course, in the fondness and familiarity of each other, but there’s no firm closing of if cameron will be okay. they’re all somewhere, in various stages of limbo, or potentially, like a car that’s stalled and stuck in reverse, with a quiet hum of an engine.

its cheesy but i am so seriously fond of the different ways ferris, cameron, and sloane get out of school that day and how perfectly they line up with each of their personalities. ferris just skips, lying to his parents in the process like the wild and risky person he is. meanwhile cameron is actually sick, because there is no way cameron would ever miss school without a good reason, so he wont be in trouble at least in that regard. it works out for him, fortunately, because there’s no way ferris would be able to convince him if he weren’t just going to lie around the house all day. and then there’s sloane, who is fully broken out via a clever scheme the two perform, and doesn’t have to get herself in trouble while deceiving rooney. she’s also informed beforehand and is clearly a willing participant, showing that she’s always down for adventure, but not completely heedless of trouble, either. cam still proves to be himself throughout the process, even wondering if him meddling with sloane could get him in trouble, while ferris is blindingly proud of his plan that of course, works without a hitch. it’s so very much them at every turn and it just makes me happy to see how fleshed out these characters are even down to the little details.

yknow actually i would pay an outlandish amount of money for the pool scene in fbdo to have had extended dialogue after ferris rescues cameron where sloane goes “i hate you!” (or perhaps fer and sloane say it to cam at the same time) and cam slyly goes “no you don’t.” and the two (or all three) go back and forth for half a minute
