The Yugioh Arcs Ranked
I’m going to rank all the main arcs of the original Yugioh anime with the exception of season zero and Capsule Monsters, because I haven’t seen those. This is just my own personal opinion, it’s not objective in any way. In fact, from looking at other people’s lists, I think I might piss a few people off with how I ranked these. Remember, this is just my opinion. Also, disclaimer, I did watch this show in dub. While from what I’ve seen of the sub is infinitely better, I did get into the show and I do still think it is a good show in dub. Still, some of the story details might be slightly different for that reason. (Going forward with the spin-offs, I am watching sub.)
7 Dungeon Dice Monsters
This arc served one purpose and one purpose alone: to introduce Duke Devlin/Ryuji Otogi and establish him as a friend of the main group before he comes back in Battle City to… do basically nothing? Personally, I barely saw the purpose in Tristan/Honda and Anzu/Tea so introducing yet another cheerleader for Yugi who doesn’t do much on his own confuses me. Ryuji admittedly has more character than Honda and Anzu and the stuff with the Dungeon Dice Monsters game itself is kind of cool but the other arcs had much more to them so this arc is at the bottom just by default.
6 Noah’s Saga (Or Virtual World)
Onto the first filler arc. There are three arcs of this show that don’t accomplish anything for the overall story and this is one of them. If you don’t know, these arcs aren’t even from the manga. In Japan, Yugioh was based on a then ongoing manga so the filler arcs were created to give the manga writer time to finish the manga so the anime could adapt it. So while I understand the reasoning behind this, I think placing Noah’s Saga in the middle of Battle City was a pretty bad idea in my opinion, as it's nothing but a distraction that destroys the flow of the story and goes on for way too long. It’s not bad though. The deck master gimmick is fun and adds an interesting twist to the duels. It was also interesting learning more about the Kaiba family and especially Seto’s backstory. Overall however, this arc drags in parts and while Noah is still a good villain objectively, he's a complete brat and I personally find that annoying. Still, it was nice seeing Mokuba turn Noah to the heroes’ side through sheer goodness alone.
5 Grand Tournament (Or KC Grand Prix)
Another filler arc. I’m putting this one over Noah’s arc because while that one had the better individual moments and did more for the characters, this arc didn’t overstay its welcome like that one did. It also genuinely shocked me by having Kaiba actually defeat the main villain rather than going the stereotypical way and having Yugi beat him. That’s worth a few points in my book. (It was also just a really good duel.) I also liked Joey’s/Jonouchi’s duel with Yugi’s grandfather, his former mentor. It was annoying how he didn’t recognize him but it was still a nice way to show how far Jonouchi has come since the start of the series. Overall, this arc is just fine. I’d probably skip it if I ever rewatched the series but it’s not without its merit.
4 Duelist Kingdom
Okay, this is the point where I’m probably gonna piss people off. Don’t get me wrong, I still like Duelist Kingdom. It’s a really good start to the show, gradually establishing the characters and the game of Duel Monsters in a really natural way. It also includes some of my favourite duels in the series: Kaiba and Yugi’s duel on the tower, and Kaiba and Yugi’s duels with Pegasus. Speaking of Pegasus, he’s a great villain. He is made out to be undefeatable and actually lives up to that reputation due to the powers of the Millenium Eye. Yugi and the Pharaoh have to repeatedly switch minds in order to beat him, which was really interesting to see. However… This is not the best arc of the show. A lot of the duels before the finals aren’t all that interesting and go on for way too long. They’re not bad duels per say, just uninteresting and padded. When I first started watching this show, I was mostly using it as background while I wrote. The filler duels just didn’t grab my attention and I have no interest in revisiting them. The parts that made me look up from my writing were anything with Kaiba (who I latched onto very early for personal, coping reasons), the times Bakura went into evil mode, and pretty much everything from Yugi and Kaiba’s duel on the tower and onward. I knew about Kaiba attempting suicide but what I didn’t know was that the Pharaoh nearly went through with killing him and had to be stopped by Yugi. That was the moment where I realized this show was more than just “a dumb kids’ show” and was willing to go dark places, despite how much the 4Kids dub wanted to hide that. It was the moment where I actually became interested in the show. So yes, this is a good arc, but later arcs in my opinion topped it.
3 Waking the Dragons
Yes, I put a filler arc over the classic season one. Honestly though, this season was so good I didn’t even know it was a filler arc until I did my research. Sure, it moved the focus away from the Millennium Items but the character development for Mai, Yugi, and the Pharaoh felt so genuine and was really interesting. This season basically forced me to see the differences between Yugi and the Pharaoh by separating them for quite a bit of the season, which was another thing that really surprised me. I was used to this show being darker at this point. However, I never expected them to actually kill the main character, even if it was obviously just temporary. That’s a pretty ballsy move. I grew to really like the Pharaoh and Yugi this season. And Mai’s fall to villainy and the exploration of her trauma from Battle City was very interesting and tragic. This show writes villains very well and this season is a great example of that. I really like stories where the villains’ motivation is to destroy the world due to their hatred of humanity/the world. Valon, Allister, and Raphael all have genuinely sad backstories that perfectly explain why they adopted this viewpoint. Dartz not so much. However, he is still a great villain. He has such a presence and the way he manipulated all these people and even twisted their minds with the Orichalcos was delightfully twisted. However, his ‘redemption’ at the end was really out of nowhere and unnecessary and Pegasus’s involvement in this season was… weird to say the least. Overall, however, I really like this arc. I understand the backlash, since this is a filler arc and a really long one at that, but I personally really enjoyed it.
2 Dawn of the Duel
Yeah, the final arc isn’t the best one. Time travel stories really don’t appeal to me personally. However, in situations where the thing in question was already bonkers as hell before introducing time travel I’m more willing to let it slide and get into the silliness of the time travel idea rather than picking it apart. A lot of its logic makes no sense if you think about it even a little but seeing the conclusion to all these long running arcs was really satisfying. Bakura is also a great villain. I was wondering what they were going to do with him all series so for him to finally have the spotlight as the main villain and to learn that he actually had a sympathetic backstory was really cool to see. This is the arc with the least actual dueling so I can see why people who watch this show for the duels would be disappointed. However, I watched the show for the lore and the characters, which were the focus of this arc and personally, I loved seeing the ancient real life version of Duel Monsters. The battles felt more intense due to them being real. Also, I will admit that the final scene where they all say goodbye to Atem got tears out of me, which I didn’t think this show would ever do.
1 Battle City (Both parts, splitting it was stupid)
Okay, this is the season that made me a fan. It’s the point where I started actively blogging about it and even analyzing it a bit. First of all, this arc had, in my opinion, the best villain in the series: Marik. His redemption arc was the only one in the show that was justified or made any goddamn sense for that matter (besides Kaiba but I don’t really count him as a villain). Marik’s backstory did a good job making him sympathetic without excusing his terrible actions. Even before his darker side took over, Marik was a really good villain, using his millennium item to mind control and kind of terrorize his minions all while hiding in the shadows so when the heroes actually see him, they don't even realize it's him. Granted the story didn't do much with that plot point but it was still cool. Also, I didn’t think this show would actually go as far as to have the villain mind control Yugi’s friends and even force Yugi to duel one of them to the death. That genuinely surprised me, as did the Yami Marik twist. This arc also added a lot to the lore, which was the aspect of Duelist Kingdom that I was most interested in and was barely touched on in that arc. In Battle City however, we got the Egpytian God Cards, two more Millenium Items, the history of the Tomb Keepers, all of which were really interesting. This arc also has a lot of the best duels in the series, which I can try and list:
-Kaiba vs Ishizu (I hate the way destiny is written in this series, but Kaiba changing his destiny was the most badass thing ever. Even I can’t deny that.)
-The best Yugi vs Kaiba battle (Tied with their Duelist Kingdom one honestly, those are both great but this one had two god cards clash. I can’t help but love it.)
-Jonouchi vs Marik (The sub gave me chills and even the dub made my heart skip a beat and think they were actually going to break anime rules and let Jonouchi win. Also, the dub gave us the amazing “according to my math, six is higher than two” line, which I unironically love.)
-Yugi vs Marik (I mean come on. It’s the final battle and seeing Marik regain control and overcome his dark side was great.)
Anyways, that was my personal ranking. I think I’m generally in agreement with the fandom consensus except I feel Duelist Kingdom is a little overrated and Waking the Dragons is underrated. I will do this with GX when I finish it though I admit I have been really on and off about watching that show due to real life reasons.

You're obviously a big fan of Witcher so how did you initially get into it?
I saw the trailer for The Witcher 3 and I was so impressed, I had to get the game. And the rest was all history.
I put a lot of hours into the game, and the more I played, the more I got hooked. Not just into the game, but the lore, the characters and everything else. I thought Skyrim was epic, but TW3 shits all over it. Skyrim is still an awesome game, and one of my favourites of all time, but it pales in comparison. Without mods, the game is buggy, unfinished and kind of underwhelming. And everything feels so small. The land that the game is set in is supposed to be four times bigger than it is in the game, according to the lore. I was also disappointed by the lack of epic battles, lazy dialogue, character development for most of the NPCs, and challenging bosses. The Witcher 3 can actually be pretty tough. There’s plenty of powerful monsters that will literally murder you if you’re not prepared. If you want to survive, you gotta come up with a plan before you start hunting down the countless beasties in the game. Brew some potions, set traps, meditate, keep your swords and your armour in good condition etc. Plus the dialogue is very well-written, many of the characters in the game are just amazing. So much thought and creativity have been put into building their characters. I particularly love the Blood and Wine DLC main quest and the characters because no one is really clear cut good or evil. More like tragic. The main story is what “bittersweet” REALLY looks like. Killing off every single one of your characters just to “SuBvErT ExPeCtAtIoNs!!!111!1!1″ is just lazy writing, uncreative and other than for shock value, there isn’t really a logical reason to do it.
Some of the characters in the story do die, but you pretty much control the fates of EVERYONE in the game. Actions have consequences, just like in real life. There are three endings in the end of every story. The good ending, the bittersweet ending and the bad ending. And you gotta do your research in order to get the ending you want. In my opinion, the good endings are far better than the bad ones, but that’s just me.
Also, it truly is an open world game, unlike Skyrim. The lands you explore, the caves and the dungeons etc. are fucking MASSIVE as fuck. There is so much land to explore, even after you complete main quests and the side quests as well, there are still so many places you can go and sights to see. Kinda like real life. In Skyrim, everything is so much smaller. Doesn’t take you very long to get from one end of the map to the other, even if you walk. In TW3, it usually takes a while to get somewhere without fast travelling, even if you travel by horse, at FULL GALLOP. And fast travelling is kinda limited because you have to use signposts to get from A to B. If you haven’t already found it, you have to ride on horseback, so the game encourages you to rely more on Roach (Geralt’s mare) than on the fast travel thing.
Horseriding is really fun, too. Not just for travelling, but there also plenty of opportunities to do horseraces and jousts, tournaments and challenges etc. on horseback. Combat is way more fun on your horse in this game than it is in Skyrim, too. Nothing like galloping towards an enemy, with your sword in hand, and chopping off their heads 😁
By the way, thanks for the ask! Feel free to ask me any other questions you might have, too 👍

Lazy Day
Story Prompt: Being Lazy / Lazy Day
Asuna stares at the sleeping figure of her in-game husband. The two of them spent the entire day yesterday fighting different dungeon monsters. Because of how tiring the raids were, the two of them decided to just spend the night in their warm log cabin with their daughter, Yui. In the real world, the two of them are on summer break and their parents are busy with their respective affairs. Whenever they’re not dating in the real world, they’ll spend their days inside the world of ALO.
“Mama…?”
Asuna snapped out of her thoughts upon hearing someone calling out to her. Yui slowly sat up on the bed while rubbing sleep from her eyes. Her ebony hair is disheveled from her sleep. The Undine giggled as she took out a brush from her inventory. Yui crawled towards her mother and leaned onto her as Asuna brushes her daughter’s hair. Not long after, a grunt beside them indicated that Kirito is waking up.
“Papa!”
Shrugging the last of her sleep, Yui jumped over on the unsuspecting swordsman. Failing to register the sudden tackle of his daughter, Kirito could only fall back onto the bed as the weight of Yui came tumbling down.
“M-Morning, Yui…” He managed to stammer out once he managed to get his bearings. The certainly woke him up faster than his alarm clock.
“Good morning, Papa!”
“Good morning, Kirito-kun.”
Kirito opened his eyes and met the smile of his Undine wife. He gave a smile in return.
“Good morning, Asuna.”
Kirito shifted the weight of his daughter as he tries to sit up from bed. He stretched out an arm, beckoning Asuna to come closer. Asuna happily obliged to the Spriggan’s request and snuggled close to him, keeping another arm out for her daughter. The happy family just sat there in silence, relishing the warmth and the comfortable silence.
“What do you think we should do today?” Asuna asked as she lightly stroke Yui’s ebony hair. “We don’t have any pending quests.”
“Hmm.” Kirito pondered on it. It’s true that they do not have any pending quests to accomplish. They’ve also taken a break from the frontlines of the new Aincrad castle. The rest of their party’s also out on different errands. Agil has to tend the shop, Liz and Silica have some shopping to do for their school project, Sinon has the upcoming Gun Gale Online Tournament, and Suguha has her homework to attend to. The sudden thought of homework made Kirito shiver because he still hasn’t touched them.
“Let’s just go back to bed and sleep.” As if to emphasize his point, Kirito slumped back down on the bed with his eyes closed. Asuna pouted when Yui followed her father’s suit and lied down beside him.
“Are we really going to waste a day off lazing around?” Asuna asked. A soft snore and deepened breaths answered her back as Kirito went back to sleep. Yui also managed to go back to dreamland, clutching the sleeve of Kirito’s shirt. Asuna pouted more when she was ignored by the two of them before smiling.
“These two…” She mumbled to herself while shaking her head. While the temptation of lying down and joining the rest of her family in dreamland is strong, Asuna fought it in order to make breakfast. She carefully stood up from the bed, careful not to rouse it so as to not disturb the sleep of the other two. She switched her clothing from her pink nightgown to her casual clothes in a flash as she walks towards their kitchen.
She decided to whip up her family’s favourite meal: sandwiches. Ever since Kirito let Yui take a bite out of his, the girl managed to develop fondness for spicy foods. Though not as high as Kirito’s but still enough to render a normal person reeling for water. And with her maxed Cooking Skill, whipping up the spiciest sandwiches in all of ALO is a piece of cake.
Speaking of cake, Asuna pondered on the idea of baking a cake today. Quickly rummaging through the cupboards, she found out that she has enough ingredients to make a chocolate cake. But before she could set everything up, Asuna changed her mind. She decided to make the cake once Kirito and Yui are up and awake. With that, she resumed her initial plan on making sandwiches for the two favourite people in her life.
When Kirito came to, he could hear noises from the kitchen. Rubbing the sleep off his eyes, he saw Yui, who is also coming back from dreamland. Together, the two of the explored the commotion in the kitchen and was greeted with a sight.
A magnificent set of dishes placed on their dining table. A basket of sandwiches as well as a well-made stew can be seen on it. It also has salad, as well as some tea for Yui to complete the set-up. Its cook, Asuna, is still busy pouring the last bit of sauce in a freshly grilled fish. The Undine failed to notice the presence of her family until Kirito hugged her from behind. The gesture caught her off-guard that she managed to spill the contents of the sauce on the floor.
“Good morning.” Kiritio whispered in her ear.
“Good morning.” Asuna replied back. “Look what you made me do.” She looked at the spilled sauce with a forlorn expression.
“Hehe… Sorry.” Kirito sheepishly replied as he helped his wife clean up the mess. Yui bounded into the kitchen and tackle-hugged her Mama, causing the latter to fall on the floor.
“It looks yummy, Mama!” The little girl happily commented. Asuna smiled as she ruffled the hair of her daughter. Once everything’s been cleaned up, the family went to the dining table to eat.
“Wow, Asuna. You sure went on full-scale with breakfast today.” Kirito said.
“Silly. It’s already lunch time!”
“Eh?” The sudden reminder of time caught Kirito off-guard. He hastily checked the system clock of the game. True enough, he saw the time: 11:24AM. He had been sleeping for almost the entire morning. Seeing his confused and bewildered expression sent Asuna into a small fit of giggles.
“It’s fine, Kirito-kun.” Asuna assured him. “You must’ve been really tired from fighting the floor’s boss yesterday.”
“Papa is so cool!” Yui chimed in. “He really beat all those monsters with a single strike!”
“Not to mention those who decided to pick a fight with your Papa.” Asuna added to her daughter’s comment. This earned a blushing Kirito as he devoured the sandwich he was eating. The trio enjoyed the comfortable atmosphere of the log cabin as they eat up. They’d talk about different topics, ranging from their raids in the new Aincrad castle down to Yui’s adventures in the daycare back in Aarun. Yui would occasionally ask about the real world, which the duo happily answered.
Once they’ve finished their meals, Kirito volunteered to do the dishes since he spent the entire morning asleep. While the Spriggan does the dishes, the other two went back to the bedroom. Asuna braided Yui’s ebony hair while waiting for Kirito to finish up.
When Kirito re-entered the bedroom, he saw Yui happily trying to braid Asuna’s long blue Undine hair. He smiled at the adorable sight of his in-game wife and daughter on the bed.
“Ah, Kirito-kun!” Asuna noticed him standing at the door, watching them. Yui jumped off the bed and pulled her father along until the two of them reached the bed. The family shared some giggles as they cuddled up next to each other.
“So, what do we do for the rest of the day?” Asuna asked. Kirito pondered on this a bit. They have no missions pending and their friends are busy today, plus the fact that it’s school break. Also, lying down on their bed with Yui cuddled on his side kind of acted as a paralysis effect on him.
“Hmm… I don’t know. Let’s just lie here in bed.” Kirito yawned as the effect of seeing Yui on the verge of sleep contaminated him.
“Again?” Asuna asked. “You just woke up.”
“It’s nice to take it easy once in a while.”
“But wouldn’t it be such a waste to spend the rest of the day just lying around in bed?” Asuna asked. Before she could expound on why it would be such a waste, light snores can be heard from both the Spriggan and their daughter.
Asuna could only sigh in disbelief before giving a smile. Honestly, the one day they all spend the entire day together and they spend it sleeping away. Asuna couldn’t do anything except snuggle closer to her favourite Spriggan while keeping an arm on Yui. Sleep is overpowering her as she joins the rest of her family in dreamland.
Consider this as a post-DDLC writing I whipped up.

2016 Anime/Animation Challenge ~ October
My Little Pony Season 6
Pastel coloured pony time! I think October is the Month of Pony, given I finished Season 6, watched The Legend of Everfree and rewatched the other Equestria Girls films. It's just that kind of month. Season 6 of My Little Pony follows the reformed Starlight Glimmer learning lessons of friendship from, who else, the Princess of Friendship, Twilight Sparkle and her awesome posse of friends. From a season opener about a royal Crystalling to her very first best friend and an unexpected return, Season 6 is Starlight Hour as she struggles to learn the importance of friendship and worries about being judged for her past mistakes. Very relatable. Except the whole enslaving/almost ending the world/kinda messing with time shenanigans.
Then again, we're not perfect. #lifelessonsiguess
Other episodes include Spike returning to the Land of Dragons to compete for the title of "Dragon Lord" (Gauntlet of Fire,) a Pony retelling of A Christmas Carol (A Hearth's Warming Tail,) a griffon seeking her cutie mark (The Fault in Our Cutie Marks,) Rainbow Dash butting heads with a Daring Do fan at a con (Stranger Than Fanfiction,) a fantasy role-playing session courtesy of Spike, Big Mac and Discord of all folks (Dungeons & Discords,) and Starlight Glimmer taking on evil with the most unexpected band of allies (To Where and Back.)
It only serves to make me wonder what Season 7 will have in store. Yay.
My Little Pony: Equestria Girls: The Legend of Everfree
Another Humanised Pony story, The Legend of Everfree takes our heroines camping in the woods on a school trip where Twilight Sparkle struggles with the aftermath of the previous film, trying to hide her darkness, while new found magical powers find theirselves to the Mane Six just in time to take on another magical threat.
The concept of the Mane Six and Sunset gaining powers is very interesting and it's fun to see how they are utilised (though never let Pinkie Pie near anything fragile, please.) Twilight's struggles with darkness are similar to Sunset in Rainbow Rocks and their friendship is a strong part of the film.
My only qwuibbles were around the less appealing opening song (compared to the other films,) another love interest character introduced for Twilight Sparkle though Timber Spruce isn't completely unlikeable, and Filthy Rich suddenly becoming a villain for simplicity sake in this feature. Other than that, it was an enjoyable piece to the Equestria Girls series, especially with the post credits stinger.
Orenchi No Furo Jiyo
Short anime about a young man that takes care of a mermaid in his bathtub. No, really. The everyday comedy of Tatsumi looking after Wakasa is an endearing way to pass the time, especially when other hybrid humans start popping in to say hello, like Takasu the octopus man and Mikuni the humanoid jellyfish.
It's a softer, light hearted anime than the darker sexual comedy of Monster Musume, so if you want something about cute monster human characters and the poor boy trying to keep things in check (without the extreme fanservice and dark comedy,) Orenchi No Furo Jiyo might be your cup of chamomile tea.
Brotherhood: FFXV
Let's get one thing straight, I love Final Fantasy XV, but I will be the first to admit the story structure of the video game could have been better. You shouldn't need to consult seperate media to get the full story, especially when said things really should have been in the game to flesh it out and paying for DLC that should have been ingame in the first place is a practice that needs to go. With that out the way, Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV is the story we really needed to get some much needed context on our beloved Chocobros and their connection to Noctis. Each Chocobro gets an episode about his past, including the very important monster attack that Noctis survived when he was a child that barely got mentioned in the game. If you ever wanted to get some backstory on your bros, this is the place to go. In fact, I insist. It really does help. Trust me.
Persona 5 The Animation ~ The Day Breakers ~
Lemme break it to you, the Persona franchise is awesomesauce. With stories about personal darkness and demons, symbolic creatures of the mind that would make Freud blush, and character development that is a much needed breath of fresh air, Persona is a series of personal recommendation for those wanting something a little different.
Persona 5 The Animation ~ The Day Breakers ~ is an OVA of sorts that adapts one of the potential side missions in the video game, fleshing out the backstory of the target, Kazuya. It would be an interesting opening gate for folks unfamiliar with P5 to get into the ideas of the game in smaller chunks. We get a glimpse at the Phantom Thieves of Hearts and how they target those with corrupt, impure hearts, giving you an idea of what the story is like in game on a smaller scale. Give it a try.
Rewatch
Big part of my childhood for introducing me to the concept of death at an early age,
The Animals of Farthing Wood
finally found its way to a DVD release in 2016. This gave many viewers, like myself, a chance to re-experience the perils and dangers of a group of animals fleeing their endangered home to promises of a better life at White Deer Park. As you can imagine, there are plenty of deaths and struggles for this varied band of creatures great and small, from newts and moles to badgers and foxes. Even now, I still remember scenes depicting the harsh reality of the food chain and being a creature of the wild.
The Butcher Bird. The motorway. The fox hunt. The farm.
What is a new experience, with The Animals of Farthing Wood, that perhaps wasn't as apparent as a younger viewer, is how dicky the different animals are to each other. Worst offenders are Adder, Owl and Weasel. Before, you knew they teased and took parting shots. As a 30 year old watcher, it comes across as bullying, especially in what is a stressful situation of survival. As a child, Weasel was one of my favourites, now she's definitely outstayed her welcome (laughing at mourning animals is not appreciated and THAT LAUGH.) I still love the likes of Kestrel, Mole, Badger and even Owl (despite her recurring theme of trash talking the other animals, it wouldn't be the same without her.)
Another Crowning Moment is the Music. The Theme song alone is the stuff of nostalgia overload by the senses, but even the background music (the same piece of music with different instruments depending on which animal is on screen.) I can perfectly envision that entire opening in my mind with the music alone, which tells you how powerful it is.
The Third Season, featuring a pack of rats that want to take over White Deer Park, was perhaps not the strongest part of the series, given very popular characters are Put On the Bus, never mentioned again and replaced with not as appealing ones. Nevertheless, it was still enjoyable, even if the first two seasons were the strongest.
Perhaps not as child friendly as it advertised (THAT BUTCHER BIRD,) The Animals of Farthing Wood is still the stuff of animation legend and worth the watch. If you want Watership Down with a mixture of different animals, this is the one to watch.
Following the new Legend of Everfree film, I decided to turn to Equestria Girls, Rainbow Rocks and Friendship Games. These are My Little Pony movies that feature the mane six as humans attending high school and defending the human world from magical threats. The surprising thing is, despite how cliched the high school setting is, they are quite enjoyable. For me, a big part of the enjoyment is Sunset Shimmer, a unicorn that escapes to the human world after stealing Twilight Sparkle's crown in the first movie, Equestria Girls. She is both a compelling antagonist that grows into so much more in the following movies.
As far as plots go, they are quite straightforward. Equestria Girls, like I mentioned before, introduces us to the human world when Twilight Sparkle chases Celestia's former student, Sunset Shimmer, into this strange, new world in pursuit of her crown (trying HARD not to make a Game Grumps joke, here.) We also meet the human versions of not only the other members of the Mane Six (Fluttershy, so cute,) but background ponies in a different form now. The fun is trying to find them as they make their way about Canterlot High.
Rainbow Rocks, one of my personal favourites, is the ultimate Battle of the Bands showdown as the Mane Six take on the standout villains of the piece, the Dazzlings. Everything is a musical spectical with the Dazzlings being the stars of the show. We also get the start of Sunset Shimmer's character development, which is also a reason I enjoy the EG films.
Friendship Games is the clash between two High Schools in a tournament of intellectual and athletic prowess... and the introduction of another Twilight Sparkle? School rivalry, peer pressure and, of course, Friendship is the order of the day with more great musical numbers and a showdown that wouldn't be out of place in a Magical Girl Show.
To MLP fans that are somewhat cycnical to these humanised forms of their beloved ponies, I'd say give the films a try. What have you got to lose? You might enjoy them more than you think. Rainbow Rocks and Friendship Games are the stronger entries.

Stuff of the year, 2016
Y’alright peeps. Don’t mind me, just shitting out a thing.
Game of the year: 01. Pokémon Sun & Moon 02. Stardew Valley 03. Pokémon Go
A rather threadbare year for games I was actually interested in, but I never really noticed because the Pokémon train just kept rolling. Pokémon Sun & Moon are comfortably the best-designed and most creatively fertile games in the series, and it feels absolutely berserk that this 20 year old franchise, this silly little monster-catching game that people told me I’d have grown out of by the age of ten, is continuing to snowball.
Side note: I’m looking at the release schedule for 2017 right now, and between... (big gasp) Mass Effect, Splatoon, Zelda, Cuphead, Thimbleweed Park, Ever Oasis, Lady Layton, Sonic Mania, Fire Emblem Heroes and Yooka-Laylee (...!) I may never have to leave the house.
Other games I liked: BoxBoxBoy!, Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, Pokkén Tournament, ReCore
TV show of the year: 01. Orange is the New Black 02. Taskmaster 03. Stranger Things
Orange is the New Black kicked it out of the park this year. It’s always been very solid television, but each series had been a little weaker than the last up until 2016, where it whipped up a perfect storm. The amazing, loathsome villain in C.O. Piscatella did well to kerb the show’s increasing cosiness, and I have never known a show that empathises so well with villains without forgiving their actions or playing down the horror. A new high.
Meanwhile, Taskmaster has very quietly become the most reliably hilarious show on television, and treated us to not one but two full-length series. It’s not just that Taskmaster is reliably funny, it’s that it makes me laugh until I hurt a little bit. The silliest and best show on UK television.
Other shows I liked: BoJack Horseman, Black Mirror, Dave Gorman’s Modern Life is Good-ish, Designated Survivor, Dragon’s Den, Penny Dreadful, Robot Wars, Siblings, The Apprentice, The O.A.
Album of the year: 01. Frost* - Falling Satellites 02. The Heavy - Hurt & the Merciless 03. Dream Theater - The Astonishing
A very ambitious but very flawed offering from Dream Theater this year made space for two smaller artists to take the top spots. I’ve been flapping on about Frost* for the best part of ten years, now, and although Falling Satellites is a little more conventionally “prog” than I was expecting, there’s still plenty of that defiant spirit, they’re continuing to rail against the clichés of the genre. Or maybe it’s just that Jem Godfrey’s talent for writing memorable, infectious and crucially modern songs is irrepressible - Numbers, Towerblock and Lantern are personal favourites.
The Heavy came to my attention more recently, and while Hurt & the Merciless doesn’t rip up their rulebook it did produce a couple of their very catchiest songs ever. What Happened to the Love? was my most-listened track of the year, according to Last.FM. It may never leave my head.
youtube
Other albums I liked: Errrr...
Film of the year: 01. Your Name 02. 10 Cloverfield Lane 03. Deadpool
I cried. Not even embarrassed. Your Name is gorgeous, and works best if you know as little about it as possible. It’s a body-swapping fantasy film, and it’s mesmerising. I gather it’s only just opening in the U.S. in 2017 - you are in for a treat.
10 Cloverfield Lane was a brilliant film in its own right, and if tying it in with the Cloverfield universe was what it took to put my bum on that seat, fine. Besides which, I rather like the idea of sequels that aren’t sequels. I hate the idea that each film in a series needs to compete with its daddy’s shadow, so I think it’s quite neat that 10 Cloverfield Lane was an altogether different beast.
Other films I liked: Dr. Strange, Fantastic Beasts..., Finding Dory, Money Monster, Star Trek Beyond, The Jungle Book
Late discovery of the year: 01. Spirited Away (film) 02. Rick & Morty (TV) 03. Undertale (game)
Rick & Morty was the more immediately satisfying of the three. I love the loose, improvisational feel, and the focus on quantity over quality means I am not at all concerned about it exhausting itself the same way The Simpsons, Futurama and Family Guy all eventually did (some sooner than others) - but we’ll see how it goes.
Undertale didn’t quite catch my imagination in quite the same way it did many others, but I love how much it makes the interface part of the story by revealing characters through its bullet-hell elements, and how playing as a pacifist isn’t boring - it doesn’t cheat you out of any gameplay. Smartly written.
Spirited Away was a funny one, because I didn’t immediately adore it. I enjoyed the film when I watched it, went away and thought, “Okay, that’s about a 7/10, 8/10,” but it just sort of... played on my mind. There’s something very special and haunting about it that goes far beyond the story itself - the world ensnared me. It stole my heart, a little bit, in a low-key way that’s very rare. I love it dearly.

ABOUT THIS GAME
The Dungeon Master has grown bored waiting to kill the next hero foolish enough to enter his dungeon. The answer? Invite all the heroes in the land and make a show of it!
Dungeon League takes everything that is awesome about dungeon crawling and spews it out as ten minutes of chaotic, multiplayer, party-game action. Up to four All Stars take to the randomised dungeon to battle each other and hordes of enemies in a series of fast and competitive events. Enjoy the rapid progression of character growth as heroes gain new powers, snatch powerful items, and slay every monster in sight, all in order to come out on top as the champion of the Dungeon League.
Pit hero against hero in either the two vs two Tournament, or the ever chaotic Battle free for all. The ultimate winner will be the first to claim three round victories. Rounds last last just two minutes so players will need to quick in order to dominate the current objective, annihilate the enemy team, loot every chest, and slay every monster.
The Dungeon Master’s league has lured a powerful and bizarre cast of heroes to duke it out for supremacy. Luna, the shadow archer, moves unseen through the dungeon while slowing her enemies to a crawl with her frost arrows. Drake, the unhinged pyromancer, incinerates everything in his path with his deadly phoenix and can call down a meteor golem to do his bidding. Albert, the dreamy unicorn prince, prances through the dungeon evading enemies with his fairy blast, and bringing monsters under his control with his illustrious charm.
Each round in the Dungeon League will have a different quest objective. It is through completing these objectives that each hero can earn points for their team. There are nine different objectives in the league. In Witches Eye the heroes must hold the eye to score points but at the same time the eye is also slowly killing them. Chicken Chase has teams fighting for control over chickens by carrying them back to their pen, but you can also play dirty and steal the enemy chickens.
All of Dungeon League’s modes are available to play online. You can use the matchmaking system if you want to play against or with strangers, or setup a private lobby and lure some distant friends to their demise.
Need a break from duking it out against human opponents? Grab some friends and run the procedurally generated death labyrinth known as Gauntlet. Everything is randomised, from the dungeon layout, to the monsters you fight, to the loot that is dropped, meaning no two runs will ever be the same. How deep you delve will determine your final score, with leaderboard placements awaiting those who truly master the Gauntlet.
If you want the stakes to be raised from Gauntlet mode then Daily Dungeon has you covered. You get one attempt, with one hero, in the same dungeon as every other competitor. Leaderboards will display who is the master of the day while those that don’t place well can always try again the next day.
The Dugout is more than just an intermission. Heroes gain experience based on how well they complete quests in addition to the monsters they have slain. Heroes that level up will be able to learn new skills at the trainer. Heroes will also be able to visit Zug’s shop to spend their gold on a variety of 70+ powerful and unique items. Don’t like what Zug has to sell? Try slipping her a few gold coins…
Dungeon League has persistent unlockable items in the form of Trinkets. These can be new Cursors for the Dugout, Gravestones for when your hero dies, and a great number of in-game Emotes with which to taunt your foes.READ MORE
