I watched all of JJBA

My thoughts on it, no major spoilers:

FIRST OF ALL: If I were to recommend it to someone, I would say watch the parts in the order of: 3, 1, 2 (although 2 is largely irrelevant), 4, 5, 6. By all logic, I should hate this anime. It goes almost completely against my taste in fiction.

Watching this anime is like getting waterboarded, occasionally a genuinely good moment will come where I am allowed to take a breath, but before i even register it some bullshit happens and I am dunked back in.

However, while getting waterboarded, I’m in a desert, i see the fucking stardust crusaders in the back, this is the only water source so while i cant breathe i am glad to have access to it.

Then finally, a particular moment comes, and i start drinking all the water, until theres nothing left and i finally breathe, and that particular moment is when father Pucci appears on screen, an essay on why he’s the best character coming hopefully never.

Watching this is like being forced to bash my head against a wall at gunpoint, and then being happy that my blood made a cool pattern on the wall. None of the characters act like real people. Time and space does not exist. Inconsistencies are everywhere.

Set ups and no pay off. Pay offs withOUT setups?? The characters describe their every action so honestly you could watch this with forks in your eyes and still know whats happening, except you won’t know from the intense mindfuckery that takes place.

But overall I had a great time. Amazing soundtrack, loved the OPs, I love the char designs and I love art that isn’t afraid to be weird and unapologetic in its weirdness, it’s insanely creative and the humour can be great, some moments genuinely had me hyped and my eyes wide

I loved how in a lot of episodes it focuses more on the antags, making you root for them (though thats often cuz the protags are annoying-)

My fav part is absolutely Stone Ocean, it has the best protag and antag, best visuals, side characters that I actually gave a shit about unlike most side chars in the prev seasons. Still rooted for the antag though.

My fav Jojo is Jolyne, second is Giorno (but the version of him in my head anyway cuz he had an amazing set up but shitass payoff in my opinion)

Fav side chars are Rohan, Anasui, F.F., Ermes, Bucciarati was alright I guess, I like Trish’s design, Polnareff was entertaining.

Fav villain is hands down Father Pucci, he’s the reason I watched this entire thing, the character who apPEARS IN THE VERY FINAL FUCKING PAR- Dio close behind. Kira was fun as well.

Everything about g5 makes me wish it was a real reboot like g3 and g4 were. Everything bad about it can be directly traced back to it being a sequel series and it being a bad sequel that undid alot of g4s work did not help the fan reception to it! I loved misty and the concepts of an evil alicorn dividing the ponies was really neat it's just I feel like an actual reboot with no connection to g4 and a dark fantasy-esque vibe like what g1 had would have been so good. Plus it could have brought back popular ponies from g4 and done them in new and different ways! I would have loved to see a new version of sunset getting ro be the main character or my old favs of toolarula and minty getting to be apart of the actual cast again!.

(Minor gripe but I feel like the names of the ponies in g5 were another major problem they lacked pizzaz and the uninspired designs didint help. They looked so much better in the 2d style than 3d but they still look really boring compared to every other generations main ponies) I also still can't get over them naming a pony Izzy. THATS A PEOPLE NAME! NOT A CUTE FUN PONY NAME!)

you're absolutely right-- being a g4 'sequel' brings it down so, so low. It could have been a servicable remix reboot like every mlp before it, with some fun modern things on it, but nyope, its bogged down n everything. How awesome would it be if opaline was the only alicorn and she was just as evil? Like, an alicorn antagonist when all the protags are NOT alicorns has a lot of potential. And yeah misty's repunzel-style story is very fun and compeling, she has a lovely redemption like sunset!

Now that the anime finally released and people made gifs of the opening, can we talk about Okarun and his effeminacy?

I don't want to reduce it down to "boy not masculine, therefore effeminate", I think he definitely embodies masculinity too but subliminal messaging keeps hitting my brain when I see his cuts in the first part of the DandaDan opening. The posing 4 poses he does invokes imagery of girls doing model posing, specifically the one with his hands on his cheeks while being more creeped out still makes me think of a pose a girl would do to show off her nails. Honestly his design in a different Shonen he would've been the fav uke of fujos everywhere.

I would say there's definitely meant to be SOME statement about gender in DandaDan as both Okarun and Momo use less common pronouns for themselves; Jibun instead of Boku/Ore and Uchi instead of Watashi/Atashi. It's also notable that Okarun has a lot of similar facial traits to the girls in the series; short flat eyebrow, large rounded eyes, and a rounder face which I think personally was really effective because the panels of the characters staring into the fourth wall is literally imprinted on my brain. And it's not just the design style of the series since we see Jiji who uses that more traditional Shonen facial type.

While I didn't think too much about this initially since an underdog male protag who isn't as manly (yet) is a pretty common occurrence, those opening scenes really make me think more on his otherness. I think it's a notable fact that he fits into and doesn't look out of place in Momo's clothes. It reflects a lot on how they both present more gender neutral. One of the things I do appreciate about the series is despite recently showing he's made a lot of physical growth, it has not resulted in him being drawn any more traditionally masculine. He is often outpaced by Momo in terms of fighting ability as well and often still needs her to finish a battle while she's more independently capable. He's also more of the worrier in these situations; the one who has to chastise or watch after a battled out Momo.

We also know that to some extent Okarun has a complex about this; he tried to get buff in secret and felt worried for how he compared to Jiji. I don't think these are bad traits necessarily (I liked him pushing his limit in the recent arc) but I do worry how this could possibly lead into Momo's characterization as well, the girl protag getting sanded down so the boy protag can stand in the limelight as a true male hero. While I don't think it would fully go that way, I've been burned by so many strong female characters (Sakura in particular) becoming more muted as a series went on. As far as I can tell (translations can bury some context), he isn't particularly focused on manliness and tends to avoid the two pitfalls of a male hero; The underdog who becomes more stoic/manly as the series goes on or the pathetic dude just normal enough to get a harem. In fact looking at that for a second, this series definitely pulls of the love dodecahedron with basically everyone crushing on one of the two but in the case of Momo's love rivals, it isn't really that they are crushing on Okarun for his traits but due to the narratives they build in their own heads; Aira needed someone to fill the tragic anti hero lover of her heroine story, Vamola believed she had to find someone strong because her adopted family wished that for her, and Sawaki fantasizes over the idea of a vampire ravishing her. (And to avoid derailing further, it could be interesting to examine how on the flip side Okarun's rivals tend to like her more so from bonding with her). But most of all, what made him and Momo work was not magically working for either other but a lot of effort and connection. Their initial bond coming from in a sense the excitement of discovery all the while they're still fighting over dumb shit and nudging each other as friends, they don't try to project (well at least they don't succeed to) an inauthentic persona around the other. He's not above telling her off but never in a way that isn't portraying them as equals and it's sprinkled in throughout the series how consideration for each other is taken (he bought her Golgo 13, he's given food when he brought Sawaki over, etc.) that by the time he is having those stereotypical protection moments, it doesn't feel like it undermines her as a capable person but rather shows off a natural protectiveness that anyone would have for someone they care about.

Which a final thought is again on what the possessions tell us about each person. I keep theorizing in some ways Turbo form represents elements Okarun wants in himself, he's got more muscles, is more traditionally handsome, and refers to Momo and others more casually (chan opposed to San) but strikingly it's rare his two forms are ever compared or commented on. Now with those powers gone, it's possible the idealer him he desired is no longer reachable.

i've been inspired by it being the anniversary of the og danganronpa so i'm gonna FINALLY start compiling all my concept art stuff for my main fangan kids!

naturally, first up is hotaru my beloved; some info/details under the cut

hotaru may not be super duper high on my list of fav ocs, but they do have one of the designs i'm most proud of--i think they work perfectly for a simple, streamlined protagonist type look, but with lil bits of personal character mixed in to their appearance, like the crumpled-flared bottom of their shirt, or the bits of hair that hang down into their collar

a couple of characters in null are based on other stuff, or have specific points of inspiration, but hotaru is actually not one of them! they just sorta happened. originally they weren’t meant to be a protag, but things worked out in their favor. i always wanted to see a DR main character with curly hair, also a they/them mc

their expressions are fairly reserved most of the time, but they are a passionate person, they just aren't very emotive until they're super super flustered or spooked, which doesn't overlap much with them being in Trial Mode.

Day 15-16: Fav Character Design Pt. 2🌙✨

I had to include my Entity for this! Real talk, this redesign means a lot to me and is the reason Enty went from my least used/least favorite protag, to almost most favorite. I struggled with his design for years and it really upset me, but finally I have a design I feel happy with, that other people like as well!💚🌙✨

It really helped me feel better, and was a giant weight lifted off my mental state lol. So, thank you all for supporting my new Entity design T^T💖🌙✨

Why I like them/why I don’t:

What the hell can I say about Yuya that I haven't already said in the past decade. Arc-V is the series that got me out of my ygo hiatus and back into the series as a whole, and Yuya is a big part of that. I've written metas on him in the past which you can find on my blog, but whats always stuck out to me about Yuya is that he's kind of a pathetic depressed loser failure (best way possible) but still drags himself back up. We see him stumble so damn much throughout the show and he does fail and lash out and suffer and make things worse BUT HE STILL GETS BACK UP!!!!

HE!!! TAKES THE STEP FORWARD!!! WITH COURAGE!!! HE WEARS A SMILE!!!!!! NOT BECAUSE IT IS EASY!!! OR BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO PLEASE THE AUDIENCE!!! BUT BECAUSE A SMILE CAN HELP YOU FEEL COURAGE!!!!! BECAUSE PENDULUM IS THE RANGE, THE OSCILLATION BETWEEN JOY AND SADNESS!!! IT'S AN EXCHANGE, A CONVERSATION!!!! A WAY TO CONNECT WITH PEOPLE AND HAVE THEM UNDERSTAND YOUR VIEW!!! ENTERTAINMENT CAN BRIDGE THE TRAGEDIES OF WAR BECAUSE WHATS MORE UNIVERSAL THAN THE SMILES IT CAN BRING!!!!!!

I've made the joke before but he is the closest analogue yugioh has ever had to shirou emiya which is a hilarious statement but it's true, from clinging to his fathers ideals because he knows no other way to live to his genuine mercilessness when pushed to the edge, all the way down to the living weapon metaphors and transfem subtext

What I like about their appearance: I think Yuya's design is unironically the best out of the protags, he just combines so many aspects of what makes previous protags designs work, but specifically I also love that they put him in different outfits. I have such a soft spot for his clown outfit and his riding duel outfit is sleek and minimalist.

Do I prefer their dub names or original names?: Sub only man, again I have a candid vitriol of YGO dubbing past DM because it turned any serious dubbing of ygo into a joke

OTP: As an Arc-V fan I'm under a binding geas so it is physically mentally and spiritually impossible for me to answer anything other than Fruitshipping here.

NOTP: probably the only one of these I hold but out of all the protag/rival ships across all ygo, yuya/reiji never actually compelled me all that much.

OT3: I while ago I made a post talking about how awesome the fucked up codependency of yuya/serena/shun could have been so yeah here. IG fruit salad also works here, any combination of the yuboys/bracelet girls is funny to me, selfcest is not just a suggestion but a necessity as well as a competition and THEY ARE WINNING

Favourite card they use: This one might be a hot take but out of the three archetypes Yuya blends in the Performapals, Odd-Eyes, and Pendulum Magicians, my favorite bar none and my fully fav archetype in all of yugioh is the Magician Pendulums. Yuya's own arc in the show is about differentiating himself from his father, and I think the Magician Pendulums stick out to me so much in this regard because they're HIS archetype: Performapals are from Yusho and the Dragons are from Zarc, but the Magician Pendulums are from Yuya!!!

I think Enlightenment Paladin and Nirvana High Palandin are my fav cards he ever uses, but Arc-V does this genius thing with action duels where it just wildly humanizes the monsters, so they all have tidbits of personality throughout the show and I love all of them.

Also obligatory shout out to Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon I love the big chicken and no one loves Yuya the way Odd-Eyes loves Yuya

Favourite moment they were in: Man. People thinking that Yuya just shouts Egao and fixes everything and that he never examines this when we have the Barret duel within ep91-92 where hes having a panic attack between saving Yuzu and just. discarding Smile World because he's so desperate to cling to his dad while also desperate to save Yuzu he is at one of his lowest lows here its just SUCH a good character moment that shows how much Yuya suffers from all the responsibility on his shoulders, self-imposed and otherwise

Least favourite moment: My live reaction- "Man, the Zarc duel was so fucking good!!! Literally peak yugioh, the best duel of all time! Alright so I bet we've got 1-2 more episodes to finish things off we've hit the series climax no way they can ruin this- Why are there 8 more episodes?"

Would I fuck, marry or kill them: im sorry yuya but move over im going to humiliate your older dragon god alter ego and shape the mattress like him

Alderheart- extremely relatable, I love how he's strong but still a med cat

Pikepaw...- Mistystar's kit/son...He's my favorite background character, fav design(dark gray tom with dark gray spots that looks like pike scales)

Mistystar - prettiest cat imo, I love how shes so old

Reedwhisker- super cute, honorable dep, you can tell I love the Bluestar fam

Dovewing - very relatable, I have autism and her sensory issues resonate with me. Also the fact that Bumblestripe was inappropriate with her and ppl trying 2 force them together aligns with my experience. She's overhated and I am her biggest defender. And I like her figurine

Frostpaw- My fav asc protag, love her personality and I feel empathetic for her

Breezepelt - relatable, as a child of divorce/rocky relationship I kin him sm. And his alignment with the wrong crowd

Moth flight - Incredibly relatable haven't read her book in over two years but I love and I will defend her with my life

Runningnose + Nightheart - both of them take 9th place. I love them both dearly and their discint personalities

Spottedleaf - this might be contraversial, I have a love hate relationship with her and I find her book relatable

Now my least favorites

10. Mosskit/overrated dead kits in general- Ok this is a super hot take I don't hate her. But I don't like her. She's really overrated and I've seen so many people have her s their favorites. She was kinda annoying when she was alive and her death was sad but people are dragging it. Same with Snowkit. He is nothing great apart from his tragic death and him being deaf. They're cute ig but some of y'all are really dragging and making me dislike these kits more(sorry for my little rant)

Why I like them/why I don’t: god i like yuya So Much. him and jaden my fav protags as of rn. I love his deck to bits I love the dueltaining thing i love that he's kind of absolutely pathetic and not even good at dueling 🥴 his emotional projection is off the charts he's an unstable little funnyman he's like if a clown was also an atomic bomb. he's SO expressive and shit just keeps HAPPENING to him and i want to observe him under my big magnifying glass. he's such a fucked up kid and didnt DESERVE LIKE. ANY OF IT???? IT'S NOT HIS FAULT HE'S 1/4 THE DEVIL

What I like about their appearance: it's just such a good character design to me...the red/green color palette is delightful and his tomato hair is so cute. arc-v character design is my favorite serieswise i think

Do I prefer their dub names or original names? SAME IN BOTH! i like 'yuya sakaki' it's very nice. rolls off the tongue real good

Favourite card they use: ANOTHER GUY WHERE IT'S SO HARD TO PICK ONE i love performapals!!! theyre all so silly. i think my favorite is Performapal Radish Horse. absolutely insane monster who ended up being really important in the duel he used it in for some reason.

Favourite moment they were in: any time he's just making such a silly little expression, but in terms of 'Moment' moment i think i need to go with the end of his duel with Yuri. up to and including when Zarc took the reigns : )

Least favourite moment: 🥴🥴🥴🥴 i feel like theres a lot of things i could choose here. erm. honestly i kind of want to go with the end of season 2 duel against Jack where all the fucking COPS??!? START RALLYING TO YUYA'S DEFENSE??!??! WHAT ARE WE DOINGGGGG YUGIOH ARC V!!!!!

Something I associate with them: i should post my yuya playlist sometime. anyway i said this on my post about yugo but yuya is just so bigly an AJR Discography Character. Humpty Dumpty especially. Good Lord.
