Understanding how to train for fat loss can be pretty darn tough.⁣ ⁣ For one, hopefully by now you understand fat loss will come primarily from your diet and specifically by burning more calories than you consume (calorie deficit).⁣ ⁣ While a majority (70-80%) of your training should be geared towards getting stronger and adding muscle, I do believe phases focused on fat loss are extremely beneficial.⁣ ⁣ And yes - you can adjust training protocols to aid in fat loss more so than strength or muscle - as outlined in this graphic.⁣ ⁣ Plus, as a fitness coach, many clients 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺 getting some sort of metabolic effect integrated into their workout.⁣ ⁣ Enjoyment improves adherence.⁣ ⁣ A few notes:⁣ ⁣ 1. With such short rest periods, you will not be able to lift as heavy as you would in a strength phase - that’s fine. Adjust accordingly. You should still strive to increase weight and/or reps as you progress.⁣ ⁣ 2. I like to mix up reps within a workout when training for fat loss, i.e. 4-6 on one lift, 6-8 on another, 8-10…etc.⁣ ⁣ 3. Don’t just use high reps to increase heart rate. This is so true! Thank you @drnadolsky for this post! In the past I talked about how there was a study showing how people would overestimate how much they were exercising by 50% and underestimate how much they were eating by 50%! This just shows it even more ! . _____________________________ I get anywhere from 5 to 10 patients or online coaching clients each week to say they cannot lose weight despite eating 1200 calories daily. - 99.99% of the time they most certainly are NOT eating only 1200 calories per day. - 1200 calories is necessary for many patients due to their small stature and sedentary lifestyle. For many it may be tough to stick to. - Either way, for those who believe they are eating that few of calories, they are likely not measuring their food correctly and/or omitting the foods that they subconsciously ate. - Usually goes like this... an egg for breakfast. A salad for lunch. Then some meat and veggies for dinner. Sure that would be around 1000 calories BUT that’s not what they are eating. - Also, my coaching team doesn’t give blanket 1200 calorie recommendations. Kudos to @drnadolsky ・・・ I have used this analogy before but was inspired to post it again based on @realcraigballantyne ‘s book The Perfect Day Formula. - You sure as hell COULD go to McDonald’s and get a grilled chicken and a salad, but you’ll be surrounded by high calorie tempting foods and you’d probably be better off just staying away. - Obesity is not alcoholism but there are some shared pathologies in the brain depending on the individual. You wouldn’t tell someone with alcohol issues to go pick up some water at the liquor store. You COULD but it would be silly. - Shape your environment. Check out this simple explanation of some of your questions by @drnadolsky! - A lot of my clients ask me about keto diets because they are the “in” thing right now. - They work well. The problem is that people think they are magical due to hormonal changes (insulin). This is incorrect. - They work by cutting out a whole macronutrient group (carbohydrates) which helps your eliminate those super yummy easily overeaten foods (pastas, breads, cakes, cookies, etc). - When you eliminate carbohydrate from your diet you end up using ketones as energy.
