Creating Conscious Fashion

This pamphlet design is based on an imagined conference directed to teach and equip young fashion designers about sustainable fashion in order to generate a more conscious and sustainable future in the clothing industry. 

The use of heavily stylised type and basic type is like that of my moodboards. The way in which the designer has integrated and blended the two together creates a point of interest. With select letters wavy while others straight the point of difference present is striking. The colour choices was also striking but matched the connotations of the conference title. Blue, trust worthy and green, environmental. Line and leaf shapes brought a sense of unity to the design, moving the eye along and generating subtle repetition. 

As the design is for a confernce, seeing a different layout of event details vs other content sparked some concepts for me. Note, this pamphlet does not meet the required deliverables for the assignment but alludes to what can be done.

FAS3001 Lecture Three- Sustainable Fashion

In today's lecture we looked at the methods of sustainable fashion: circular fashion, fashion on demand, and compassionate fashion. We also looked at the environmental goals of sustainable brands: using renewable energy sources, protecting natural sources, repairing, remaking, recycling, improving working conditions, and having good ethics. It involves high consideration in all these areas, with a focus on high quality products that are conscious and made to last. Evidence of the growth of sustainable fashion has been the boom of second-hand clothing and renting, as influenced by social movements and social media platforms, like Depop and Vinted.

Another sustainable influence we looked at was COP27, and the aims and motives behind the meeting. We looked at their aims: securing global net zero by 2050, adapting communities to cope with the effects of climate change, and mobilising finances. Evidence of the progress made at the conference was this last aim; Worth (2022) summarised how the delegates agreed to financially support the countries that are not able to cope with the effects of climate change.

Raeburn’s responsible ethos was another thing we explored, looking at how we must not only change designs, but the systems used to create them sustainably. In a video, Raeburn showed that sustainable practice is possible, as highlighted by the brand Patagonia, and how far ahead they are as a company in their sustainable practices.

We also looked at the greenwashing of brands, particularly those like the lawsuit of H&M for their misleading eco labels. Indeed, Pearcy (2021) wrote how “96 per cent of [H&M’s] claims flouted the guidelines in some way” with regards to its climate policies and claims. 

Fashion on demandThis fashion system has been growing increasingly over the past five years, particularly through social media platforms. It looks at the new want for personalised and bespoke items that are made on demand. This system allows for storage systems to be unnecessary, as brands like AK Threads have no excess stock from working in this system. WGSNs forecasts also allude to this growth in the future, particularly evident in the trend Domestic crafts.

Circular fashionThe concept that everything remains in a circle, meaning there are no implications to the environment. It is based on the notions of circular economies which has fluidity and aids all levels of socio-economic hierarchies. This is evident in repurposing and reusing garments, as done by brands like Marine Serre, whose work focuses on patchwork and repurposing. An area we looked at as being key for the successes of circular systems is the growth of repairing ones broken clothes instead of simply buying new, which we discovered is not embedded in British culture, yet is commonplace for eastern European cultures. WGSN looked at the future of this in their Interior Wear trend prediction. 

Compassionate fashionThis is the sustainability focus on the workers and animals involved in the fashion industry. We explored how Stella McCartney is a strong advocate for this and is arguably the leader of compassionate fashion in the industry.  She focuses on using sustainably managed sources, like viscose that is sourced from sustainable forests in Sweden. WGSN looks at this in their trend Horticool, which not only focuses on natural dyes and resources, but also the notion of community.

Triptych - fast fashion

This is part of out fast fashion project. To create these images I used my canon camera, LED panel light, extension tubes on top of my kit lens to get the macro effect and pieces of clothing. for these images I used my black leotard with lace for dancing.

My camera settings were a shutter speed of 1/125, aperture of f5.6 and f8 and an iso of 1600. I used a cooler white light for this as it was brighter and created a better image with the black fabric.

I chose my favourite 3 images that I liked the most and thought would go well together.

I feel that these images go together well as they all feature lace. They all also have various amounts lace, which gives them all the same subject matter but all look like individual images. 

I edited these images in Lightroom by increasing the texture and clarity in all of the images. I made the first image black and white as there was some colour in the background. For all the images I changed the contrast, shadows, whites and exposure until the gave the desired look I wanted. 

I created this by creating a contact sheet, the size of an A3 image, with 1 row and four columns and then moved them and resized them until I was happy with the way they looked.

This croquis was made using photoshop. I opened an image I photographed at the beach and warped the waves in different ways to create a fan shape for the top and a wrap for the skirt.

This dress is inspired by Zuhair Murad’s Spring 2019 couture collection.
