The world of synthetic fabrics can seem overwhelming- and for good reason! With dozens, if not hundreds, of different types there's no way to remember them all. But they really boil down to only a few very important inventions. The history of man-made fibers will help us understand why things were invented, what their uses were intended to be, and how we ended up with them mixed in to nearly every clothing option out there. Do they really improve the world like they promised? Or are the side effects- microplastics, fumes, chemicals, sweat, stink, pilling, and more- outweighing the benefits in a modern world?

Fashion & Design in the BioShock Series (Part One)

Hello! Here is the fashion video at last! This took such a long time, but I hope it does its intended job of teaching people something new and adds a critical perspective to a game I think is art. TL;DR - anyone here like research essays? On Specific Fuckin Shit?

Okay so I was, earlier, putting my foot down and looking into the nitty gritty of how to format artwork (specifically in my case, traditional pieces) for print - which I have been putting off for years, and which is increasingly pertinent since as it stands it looks like drawing commissions and me do NOT get along well.

Aaaand then the wee devil on my shoulder told me that hey, hey, wouldn't it be more fun and gratifying for one of my specific old faves, to redraw it instead???

So basically now I'm fighting for my life in the historical clothing rabbit hole.

AND now wondering whether anyone would be interested hearing like, mini-essays slash rambling drabbles about what I turn up? God fucking knows that the content mill doesn't wait for man nor bird, and frankly I have my best ideas from when I see something and run around mental looking for More Info.

This would either be in like, common or garden tumblr post text format. Orrrrr... well we do love a good video essay, and apparently I have a "nice" "voice".

Oxford Dictionary defines fast fashion as: ‘inexpensive clothing produced rapidly by mass-market retailers in response to the latest trends’

From the hands of skilled artisans to the frenzy of fast fashion, our clothing has undergone a dramatic transformation. Step into the wardrobe of time as we unravel the fashion evolution: where the story behind our clothing may be fading faster than your favorite trend.

It’s not hard to tell that the quality of our clothes have been on the decline in recent years, but it hasn’t always been like this. Clothes used to be some of the most sustainable business practices around. Clothes were made to last, with quality materials and were usually tailored for the wearer to last a lifetime. Wardrobes were curated with timeless fashion, not just whatever was in trend. Clothing pieces at the time were more pricey but it was an investment, not just something that you’d forget about in a couple months. Historically, clothes would be ‘made-to-order’ either by an elder relative or, if you were more wealthy, a seamstress. Following the industrial revolution clothing was becoming more standardized and made-to-order was far less common, but even then clothing would follow seasonal collections that were usually planned months in advance, not changing to follow micro-trends. Even if seamstresses were less frequented, tailors were still in high demand since though clothing became standardized people still wanted them to last long and to fit them perfectly.

Moving into the 90s-2000s consumer culture experienced a drastic shift and the perspective on fashion changed. Things like marketing and influence started having more play in the clothing market. Suddenly consumers were being bombarded with “THE LATEST TRENDS” in magazines, commercials and inside stores. Celebrities were also gaining influence, to the point where if your favourite celebrity was wearing something in a magazine it would sell out. Society was moving away from timeless pieces and into ‘hot’ and ��new’ and as consumer culture shifted, so did the stores. Brands with fast-fashion ideas like Zara and H&M started appearing, the idea behind these stores was to create trendy and affordable clothes. Stores like these were paving the way for future fast-fashion brands because people no longer had to save up to buy clothes that were in, instead they could go to the local mall and buy something that looks close enough. Even though these stores were considered fast-fashion I don't think they fully fit the criteria to today’s standards, they still had decent quality clothes that would last if maintained and the prices were good but not dirt cheap. The trends however were still flying by and were about to pass a whole lot quicker.

Enter the current decade, where nothing could’ve prepared the world for the creation of fast fashion websites. Websites like Shein allow consumers unlimited access to anything they want for cheap, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a price. Since 2020, microtrends have been rampant, from vsco, to alt, and now y2k. Reaching the point that normal stores just aren't able to keep up, but this is where fast fashion websites shine. They’re able to keep up with the trends in a way companies like H&M and Forever21 can’t anymore.

But what are the ethics behind fast fashion empires? how are they able to sell clothes for basically nothing? It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you that fast-fashion’s workers are treated poorly, but the truth is probably worse than you thought. An article by Dazed Digital goes in depth on the conditions Shein workers face. Workers aren't paid a base salary, but instead they are paid 0.051CAD(0.27 Chinese Yuan) per garment- this is a company worth $100 billion by the way-. And if that wasn't bad enough, if they were to make a mistake their salary can be slashed by ⅔ (0.045 Yuan; 0.0085 CAD). Not only is the exploitation of workers basically becoming a human rights issue but the environmental impact these practices have is draining our planet.

There’s a long list of poor environmental impacts large companies like these contribute to, but some big ones for fast fashion companies are overflowing landfills and huge carbon footprints. It’s called fast fashion for a reason, it was never made to last. They are poor quality and start falling apart after a few uses, and even if the article does last it’ll be out of trend soon enough. Thrift stores are being flooded with unnecessary purchases people made, some even get donated with tags still intact. And when it does end up in a landfill it could take anywhere from 20-200 years to decompose depending on the material. (List of things that decompose faster: Cigarette Butts: 10 years, Tin: 50 years, Batteries: 100 years, Wet Wipes: 100 Years). Shein mass-produces an ungodly amount of items weekly and it will soon start taking a toll on the environment (if it hasn't already). An article from Time states that with the manufacturers mass consumption of oil they in turn produce 6.3 million tons of CO2 a year, almost the same amount that 180 coal-fired power plants could create - not taking into account the amount of CO2 produced by the animals these producers need for textiles.

We are quickly approaching the point of no return for climate change and this is just one big contributor to this issue, and while it’s very tempting to just keep putting the blame on the company, sometimes you have to acknowledge that the call is coming from inside the house. Even if the products have already been made doesn’t mean you have to buy it, the prices are incredibly tempting but when you consider all the facts is it really worth it? You pay for quality and a $6 shirt is exactly that, a $6 shirt. Instead of spending $100 on a haul of clothes that will most likely go out of trend in a month, consider purchasing a few versatile pieces or even work on curating your wardrobe to a personal style (that’s what I’m currently trying to do). I just think in this situation the pros no longer outweigh the cons when this is my future at stake. Becoming more mindful about your consumption can also help control the impulses to just buy whatever you want instantly, instead try waiting a couple weeks to see if you actually still want the product. At the end of the day though, saving up and splurging on something always feels more rewarding than buying a bunch of stuff for cheap that you’ll probably just end up hating anyways. Fast fashion sucks, thanks for tuning in!

hello and welcome!! my scholarship (read: obsessively reblogging things or bookmarking them thinking i'll actually find them again later) tends to be VERY chaotic, but i know there are definitely compilations out there. i've read some great ones.

nini (@scuderiafemboy) has a LOT of lore content on tumblr and twitter & does a lot of translating of dutch interviews/manages to unearth old interviews all the time. the twitter thread of threads covers 2018 through june 2023! she also compiled some of the database on tumblr here.

@chibrary archives interviews, articles, etc., in glorious fashion. this is charles centric but naturally charles' history intersects with max's so there are some good pieces in there, like this 2015 article on the lestappen rivalry in karting. the #driver:max tag provides a lot of golden content (such as extended lore on the inchident!).

Learn Italian With Lucrezia — truly the savior of anyone learning Italian. My favorite videos are her Q&As, vlogs, and “n basic phrases you need to know.” I don’t get much out of her grammar explainer videos but that’s because of who I am as a person.

NovaLectio — commentary style mini documentaries. I export them to LingQ to read before watching and it helps me parse what’s going on. Also, they upload some videos dubbed in English so you can watch both.

Vogue Italia — celebrity interviews and fashion content. About 50/50 Italian and English but obviously high production value.

ArtandtheCities — criminally underrated channel imo. 10-15 minute art history/industry videos by an art historian. Super interesting, she’s easy to understand, and has captions.

Chef Max Mariola — utter chaos but fun. A Roman chef cooking various dishes, sometimes with a guest. Gives very “your uncle is hosting Thanksgiving and forgot until yesterday” vibes but in the best way.

TV/Movies/Documentaries

RaiPlay (free!) — Italian version of PBS. Lots of documentaries and some kind of goofy soap operas/narrative shows. You can also watch live TV.

Podcasts and Radio

RaiPlay Sound — basically NPR. Also free! You can find podcasts, live radio stations, audiobooks, and even audio descriptions of movies and TV shows.

Articles

Formula 1 Italia — Formula 1 news. I’m a big Ferrari fan but they cover a lot of news/current events (as long as they can connect it to a driver). The writing is short and to the point so it’s easy to parse for beginners. And honestly the drama is better than a lot of TV shows.

Stile Arte — long, more complex articles about art and archaeology. Cannot recommend it enough if you have an interest in any of those things. There are some straightforward history articles at the B1/B2 level, and also some more creative essays that push C1.

Corriere della Sera — daily news site. I started reading the news only in Italian to keep me from doom scrolling because America is terrifying. This is just the site I have ended up using a lot. Mostly because it’s easy to navigate and they have a ton of content.

No longer invited to guest on podcasts BC he takes over the conversation and wins every debate or argument. Runs multiple successful side businesses but doesn't care about selling merch BC he doesn't need to. 8 books under his name (all NY times bestsellers), 2 more books on the way.

Levi: never shows his face. Rarely responds to comments or questions. Makes calming content about types of tea and lifestyle content and it's unintentionally ASMR. 0 post schedule, either he's making content or he's gone for 5 months. Strong cult following and a billion conspiracies about who he is and Reddit threads of people taking screen caps of the backgrounds in his videos to try and work out where he is, but no ones ever figured it out. Never takes sponsorships so if you see him recommended a brand, you know it's good and the item sells out in 24hrs. 0 merch, he doesn't give a fuck, but participates in fundraiser's for good causes, especially for children coming from impoverished backgrounds.

Mike: gym bro thirst traps and workout tips on tiktok and IG reels. Occasionally posts talking vids for sponsorships, mostly protein shakes and charity fundraisers. Sometimes does cooking content and mens lifestyle like fashion and book/film recs. Likes to troll alpha bro viewers. 7/10 editing skills but mostly uses premade capcut templates to the latest trending tiktok audio clip.

Nanaba: editing queen 10/10. Day in the life of/GRWM/chatty vids, no particular angle for her content, SHE is the content. Takes no shit. Huge following. Big sis energy. Always has the most in depth and hilarious clap backs to hate comments. Rumoured to be dating Mike but neither of them confirm it (they've been together for years).

bonus Eruri headcanons- Erwin has his own office to film his videos whilst Levi pretty much used the rest of their house. Erwin always has a mug of tea when he films despite being known as a coffee drinker. It's always a tea blend that Levi has recommended before. No one's put 2 and 2 together yet.

hi! i wrote an essay about rosy ronkey and her clothes, and i hypothesized what time period i think shes from/inspired by ^^ below if you wanna read more :))

ive been fixated (or had a special interest or whatever you want to call it) on rosy ronkey for a YEAR today. i've always been pretty interested in her outfit from an aesthetically pleasing point of view, but recently i wanted to see if i could find any trends and time periods in the inspirations of her clothes, which is what this essay is about! it’s going to be an explanation of most of her clothes, top to bottom, from what i can assume with the research i've done. i say research, but i probably don’t have the best sources? they’ll be linked below, but it was really more cross-referencing than anything else lol

i reached out to annie montgomerie for comment/criticism, but she’s obviously very busy and i enjoyed my research from a subjective point of view :)

basic specs on rosy (no one else but me cares): looking at rosy, the only zoomorphic, or animal looking, aspect of hers is her head. judging by proportions and cross-referencing, she looks to have the body of an american girl doll. this is just what i’ve noticed, but annie’s most recent stuff is way less anthropomorphized compared to rosy and the group she was made with. looking at annie’s most recent exhibit, hand me downs, every single piece is completely animal, with hand-sculpted claws, paws, wings and hooves. some of these dolls legs still look like american girl doll legs, but most everything else is animalistic. this isn’t important, but i just thought id mention it because artists’ growth over time is cool!

starting with her coat, it looks like a double-breasted red childrens’ coat with two rows of two buttons each. these kinds of coats are still available today, but i could find the closest matches by looking at 1920s childrens’ coats, specifically rothschild coats. the rothschild family has a long and complicated history, but all that’s important to know is that they are new york based (which doesn’t totally fit my assumptions about her; in general i assume all of annie montgomerie’s dolls are british because of her nationality) and they’ve been in business for over 100 years. by cross-referencing the growing style of double-breasted coats in the 1920s, and the style of rothschild childrens’ coats in ads from the time, i feel like it’s easy to assume rosy's character has this coat, or at least was very heavily inspired by it.

a theory i’ve seen before is that the ticket on her coat is a luggage label. these were used during WWII to evacuate british children during the blitz. the history press site says luggage labels listed “name, school and evacuation authority,” and is also where i got most of my information. i want to tentatively deny this theory. i'm pretty sure the ticket is an annie montgomerie staple opposed to a part of rosys' character. she's shown with the tag in the yorkshire sculpture park video, and on gerard way’s website, but she’s missing it in all the photos posted by annie montgomerie herself on facebook and instagram. almost every single annie montgomerie piece on display or for sale has a tag as well. i love this theory, and it’s probably what got me interested in researching her outfit in the first place, but i don’t think i could prove it if i tried.

other than the ticket, she has white roses on the left side of her coat and some smaller twigs? sticks? pinned to her collar. white roses symbolize purity, youthfulness, innocence, and in some contexts, respect for the departed. i couldn’t find any historical photos of children with roses in their outfits, but across the board that was the result i got for their meaning. i can’t discern what she has on her right collar for the life of me, if someone else can figure this out, PLEASE tell me

her dress is pink, with a cinched embroidered waist and a peter pan collar. peter pan collars became popular in the 1920s, and have been a staple of childrens’ dresses since (sources for this one were a few blogs and wikipedia, but also some ads, so i feel pretty confident with it.) some ads for girls’ dresses in the 1920s had the same soft pleats and embroidered waist as seen on rosys’ dress. i don’t think there’s a meaning behind the color, except that it compliments the red coat and her fur.

her stockings are standard, I couldn’t find much special meaning behind them, british children have been wearing stockings forever, and for girls especially, stockings became more popular in the 1920s as dresses got shorter. usually they were sheer and nude, and rosys’ look like the gray kind kids wear today, but i think it’s still period appropriate to an extent. her shoes look like red mary janes for american girl dolls, just more scuffed and dirtied. mary jane shoes themselves have been around for a while (called “bar shoes” originally,) but they got their name in 1904. in one of the first drafts for this, i read the fairy tale “the red shoes” to see if it offered any insight. i thought it’d be fun to relate, but it’s just a popular danish fairy tale, and it was hard for me to entertain the idea for long.

TLDR: i think rosy ronkeys outfit is inspired by british 1920s fashion!

Modern! Meadowlark Headcanons (Cole Edition)

(I decided to separate the characters because I have a lot to say about each of them and if I did them all in one post it would be extremely long)

• They would be known as the quiet awkward kid in school. People think they’re nice but nobody besides the Lark knows them well. A little bit of a mystery

• Probably in a club or two (most likely music and/or drama) but they don’t interact much with the other members unless absolutely necessary or it’s approached first (They’re too shy to approach first)

• If they were in Drama, it would rarely audition for a part in a play. They mostly work backstage as a sound designer or design set pieces

• Wouldn’t like horror movies. They don’t enjoy the violence and gore. Also not a fan of movies depicting war or end of the world type shit

• Huge book worm. They would spend their lunch breaks in the library reading. Not picky about the genre they read but it does have a soft spot for fantasy and mystery

• Would prefer online learning over actually going to school

• Had a 2020 alt phase (it haunts them in their dreams but they also sort of miss it)

• Not a huge fan of anime but they wouldn’t mind watching it if their friends really wanted to

• Huge fan of Gravity Falls. It finds the mystery aspect of the show interesting and they relate to Dipper a lot

• Beside Gravity Falls, they also like Over the Garden Wall, Charlie Brown movies, Winnie the Pooh, and Scooby Doo (specifically the old school and mystery incorporated versions but any of era is fine with them)

• I’m a bit iffy on this one but I think they would like gummies and probably prefer them over chocolate. It wouldn’t like sour ones though, just classic gummy candy like gummy worms, bears, etc

• LOVESSS ASMR. They would listen to it all the time. Reading, doing homework, sleeping- whatever it’s doing, they’re listening to asmr

• Other than music, their favourite subjects in school would be history and english (specifically creative writing, they don’t really enjoy writing essays)

• Prefers older music rather than today’s music. Unless it’s folk of some kind, they would prefer to listen to bands and musicians from the 60s and back. Additionally, it strikes me as the type to believe love songs back then and better than love songs today
