Caelwynn's Mod List for Stardew 1.6.9+ - Aesthetics
Last Updated: 11/26/24
Diverse Stardew Valley — allows you to introduce a multitude of diversity into the vanilla NPCs with regards to ethnicity, sexuality, gender, and disabilities. I adore this mod, and use a different set of combos on each save, as many NPCs have multiple options.
Elle's Seasonal Buildings — changes the look of farm buildings. It has multiple looks to choose from that slot in nicely/cleanly with various overhauls such as Starblue Valley or DaisyNiko's Earthy Recolour.
A Cleaner Sewer — revamps the decor of the sewer and Krobus's spouse room.
Seasonal Outfits for Ridgeside — adds seasonal outfits for Ridgeside characters.
Seasonal Outfits for SVE Vanilla Style — adds seasonal outfits for SVE characters.
Dynamic Reflections — allows the sky to be reflected in the water. A huge resource hog if you're on a low-end computer, but I played with it anyways because SO PRETTY.
Visible Fish — makes fish visible in different bodies of water. Also another potential resource hog.
SH's Wild Animals — adds in a ton of additional critters that run around the map. Again, may make your game stutter/slow.
Crab Monster Recolors — has several options to recolor rock/lava crabs so that they're easier to spot.
No More Pile of Bug Meat — changes Willy's special order event so that the bait is all in a container instead of an eldritch mass on the beach.
Elle's Cuter Barn Animals — retextures the barn animals to, indeed, make them cuter.
Elle's Cuter Cats — adds 155 different breeds/skins to pick from for your feline companion.
Elle's Cuter Coop Animals — yep, makes your coop animals cuter too.
Elle's Cuter Dogs — adds 340+ breeds of dogs to pick from.
Elle's Town Buildings — redoes the buildings around the valley to match one of four different palettes: vanilla, earthy, Starblue, and wittily.
DSV Flower Queen's Crown - Always Raining in the Valley — allows Sterling, Mia, and Henry to have a chance at winning the Flower Crown.
DSV Flower Queen's Crown - Ridgeside Village — gives RSV NPVs the chance to win the Flower Crown.
DaisyNiko's Earthy Interface — a warm, earth-toned palette for the user interface.
DaisyNiko's Earthy Interiors — same as above except for interiors.
DaisyNiko's Earthy Recolour — same as above except for the whole map.
DaisyNiko's Earthy Map for East Scarp — same as above for East Scarp.
DaisyNiko's Earthy Map for Visit Mt. Vapius — same as above for Mt. Vapius.
DaisyNiko's Earthy Map for RSV — same as above for Ridgeside Village.
DaisyNiko's Earthy Map for SVE — same as above for Stardew Valley Expanded.
Simple Foilage — retexture for trees.
Aimon's Fancy Farmhouse — a fancier farmhouse map. I've only played with the starter house thus far.
Aimon's Fancy Shed — a fancier shed.
Jen's Cozy Cellar — gives the cellar a little basement den in addition to space for casks.
Pookachu's Medium Greenhouse — a mid-sized greenhouse with lots of areas for trees.
Gwen's Paths — retextures/recolors craftable paths and flooring.
Lovely Kitchen — retextures/recolors the kitchen you purchase.
Farmhouse Fixes — adds a bunch of fixes useful with custom farmhouse maps.
Skell's Misc. Furniture — adds some random furniture pieces. I downloaded it for the computer desk and the motorcycles.
Old Wallpapers and Flooring — adds a bunch of new wallpapers/flooring if you're going for a more aged/retro look.
H&W Bathroom Furniture — adds bathroom furniture/fixtures to craft a bahtroom with.
HxW Fairy Fountain Furniture — pretty fountains in a range of sizes.
H&W Fairy Garden Furniture — very whimsical outdoor furniture set, including a metric-ton of garden gnomes.
H&W Outdoor Furniture — more traditional style of outdoor furniture.
Nostalgic Old Furniture Collection — adds dozens of older/retro style furniture and clutter.
Retro Style Furniture — more retro style furniture in case you want the house to feel like Grandpa actually left the contents to you.
Nano's Decorative Tree Furniture — outdoor furniture, including a swing hanging from a tree.
A Better-Looking Plasma TV — I liked the console tables.
Alternative Textures — allows you to easily add in retextures for various furniture/objects.
Alternative Texture Packs

While renovating their lovely rustic home, Jasmiina was already imagining what Xmas would be like. She and husband Matti turned it into a colorful, rustic farmhouse and currently have two Finnish horses, an Estonian riding pony, a mini pig, two giant rabbits, chickens, a dog, three cats, aquarium fish and a vineyard shed.
Tumblr media
How wonderful is this?
Tumblr media
The living room is dominated by a group of plush sofas.
Tumblr media
Of course an old house must have a rocking chair.
Tumblr media
The bright red kitchen is the heart of the home.
Tumblr media
Jasmiina bought the red curtains too short, but not to worry- she added the white fabric strips to lengthen them- they look great, maybe even nicer.
Tumblr media
The magnificent tiles of the Art Nouveau-style oven in the hall were bought cheaply before the house was renovated. A local mason assembled a fireplace from them, which is used daily as the house is heated with wood.
Tumblr media
From the kitchen you enter the office. The computer and printer are very attractive on an antique desk.
Tumblr media
The office also serves as a dressing room. The adorable Art Nouveau mirror table was painted light blue.
Tumblr media
Jasmiina found the old sewing machine when she went to buy a slightly-used machine, but the metallic beauty completely charmed her.
Tumblr media
SpongeBob Collien enjoys sleeping in the master bedroom. The wall has a  composition of family pictures.
Tumblr media
The lovely rooms for the girls are upstairs. Orange curtains and a series of lights crafted by Jasmiina bring a warm glow.
Tumblr media
This year, daughter Aretta chose a white spruce for her room. The elf has brought small advance gifts to its “roots” at night.
Tumblr media
Aretta's room has a patinated wooden bed. On the bedside table shines a miniature world made in a small briefcase.
Tumblr media
Son Otso's room has a convenient loft bed.
Tumblr media
Every morning, there’s the happy and bustle of feeding the animals.

Chapter Seven: More Than Meets The Eye
________________________________________________________________
Acquiring his new library card was a simple and straightforward affair, and in a matter of a few minutes Marcus had it slipped into his wallet and a new stack of books to read. He should really head back to the shop to get some work done or perhaps take care of a few other errands.
Belle spoke up again before he had the chance to wish her a good day.
“How are you liking Storybrooke so far, Mr. Gold?” Belle questioned, handing him his books. “You haven’t been here long, have you?”
Marcus shook his head side to side lightly. “Oh, uh... no, not very long. Perhaps a month or so?” he answered, sounding unsure himself. “I haven’t been around town much… Busy putting the shop together.”
Belle smiled as she listened to his answer, enjoying the brush of accent across his wording. “I can imagine, you seem to have quite the collection there.” She chuckled.
“Y-yes well… one never knows what could be someone’s treasure.”
“Have you had the chance to explore town at all?”
“A small portion, however, Grace is determined to take me on an adventure and show me the entire town before school begins.”
“Grace? Grace Madden?” Belle questioned.
Gold nodded, his gaze slipping down to the books in front of him, restacking them from smallest to largest. “Yes, Jefferson’s daughter. Do you know her?”
“Yes, she comes to story time every now and then with -- “
“Hey, lassie!” a heavily accented voice called, cutting her response off. “Can you help me over here for a sec?”
Belle sighed in annoyance. Really, Merida should know to keep their voice down to a reasonable level. “Excuse me Mr. Gold, I’ll just be a minute.” She turned to walk around the circulation desk, brushing past him on her way.
Marcus shook his head as he looked back up to her. “N-no, please, go ahead. I apologize for taking up your time,” he managed to mutter, though he was certain half of it wasn’t heard.
“What can I do for you Mer?” Belle questioned.
The conversation drifted into background noise the farther the librarian walked away to help the young redhead, leaving Marcus to gather up his books and quietly heading back home for the day.
xxxxx
Marcus sighed as the door swung open, stepping into Jefferson’s rather eclectic home. While he wouldn’t call it his style, he felt fortunate that he was invited and encouraged to call the space home.
He took a step to the side, setting the library books down on the hall table and tossing his keys into the bowl before depositing his coat on the rack — which inevitably only stood to support Jeff’s favorite top hat.
The house’s silence hugged him as he made his way up to his bedroom, flicking on the lights as he went, confirming that both Jeff and his daughter were out. Marcus ran his hands through his hair, gathering the length together to tie off in a ponytail. It wasn’t an intended look - he more so used it for convenience, but it didn’t stop his family from pointing out the longer it got, the closer he was to having a man bun. He shook his head at the idea. Clearly he did not have the looks for such a style. Carefully, he reached back to each of his ears, clicking the off button and pulling out his hearing aids, setting them aside on the dresser.
Going from a world of sound, music, and chatter to one of near void-like silence had not been an easy transition. However, it was something he simply had to deal with at the time. There had been no time nor reason to wallow in self pity. After a while, one became accustomed to their inner monolog being a constant companion. There certainly would never be a day he wasn’t alone with his thoughts.
Marcus hummed ‘A Whole New World’ to himself as he made his way back downstairs. The song had been incessantly playing in his mind from Grace’s last rewatch of Aladdin. He only stopped for a moment to pick up the stack of borrowed cookbooks on his way to the kitchen.
Jefferson certainly had not skimped on the budget when he renovated the house. The kitchen had just about every element any chef, or in this case, a home cook could dream of. Large farmhouse sink, marble countertops, soft-close drawers, double ovens, a gas range, along with all other top quality appliances. Such a kitchen deserved a proper chef, but instead today it would have him for company again.
He settled one of the cookbooks into a nesting stand, flipping through the pages before settling on a vegetarian casserole. The kitchen was well stocked and easily had all of the ingredients he would need without making a run to the grocery store for any last minute items.
Marcus pulled out a colander to place in the sink before gathering his vegetables, taking a moment to make sure his shirt sleeves were well rolled, pulling on an apron, and starting to wash them up in cool water. Even though it was still summer it was a bit late in the season to plant anything in Jefferson’s garden. Perhaps if he was still living with the Maddens coming next year it could be his and Grace’s project.
Moving to the cutting board with the zucchini and heirloom tomatoes, he picked out a suitably sharp knife and began slicing everything to the appropriate size, glancing back up and checking the recipe book for any details. Marcus enjoyed cooking, but even at his age he could admit he was still learning quite a few things. The fact that he was cooking for others and not just himself made the effort worthwhile and that much more enjoyable.
As careful as he would be as if restoring an antique, he layered a baking dish with the vegetables along with fresh basil, garlic, salt and pepper, finishing off the top layer with a blend of cheeses. Sliding the dish into the oven and setting a timer, he washed up his tools and hands, moving on to pull out a small baguette. Quickly slicing it in half, he spread a garlic butter mixture on either side and set it to the side to be finished off at the last minute with the casserole.
Yet another benefit of living with the Madden’s was Jefferson’s intention on keeping up with the latest technology. If it was released, he was most likely to have already ordered it before it came on the market.
“Alexa,” Marcus called out, the small speaker unit hanging on the wall activating, “play Ludovico Einaudi.”
Faintly he could hear the computer respond to his request and with a few beeps it began to play one of his albums. The soft piano music twined beautifully with the string instruments, filling the kitchen with a gentle ambiance. It would probably be easier to use a device and place a pair of headphones into his ears to get the best sound without wearing his hearing aids. However, he much preferred for the drifting music to fill the space around him, pushing the wall of near silence back just a few feet.
xxxxx
Marcus had just slipped the garlic bread into the oven as he heard the high-pitched sound of the doorbell ring. Glancing up from his cookbook where he was leaning on the counter, he saw the LED light on the doorway flashing brightly. He set the book aside as he stepped into the hall when a small body with open arms crashed into his midsection without warning.
“Uncle Gold, we’re home!” Grace announced happily, resting her chin on his belly as she grinned up at him.
Marcus chuckled as he squeezed her back. “Yes, I can see that.”
Jefferson frowned as he closed the door behind him with his foot, shaking his head. “Grace, we’ve talked about this before.” He sighed as he set the shopping bags down on the hall table. “You have to give him a chance to get to the door before barrelling in like that.”
“It’s fine, Jeff,” Gold brushed off, his eyes having been glued to his friend’s lips to read them. “I saw the kitchen doorbell, it's not like she gave me a heart attack.”
“No, she knows the rules better than that. Grace, you owe Marcus an apology.”
Grace glanced to her father before back up to Marcus, biting her lip as she released him from her arms. “I’m sorry.”
He took a knee down next to his niece as he bopped her nose with his finger, offering her a smile. “That’s quite alright, I get excited to see you, too. Why don’t you wash up, dinner will be ready in a few minutes.”
“Okay.”
Jeff shook his head again as he watched his daughter take off up the stairs before. “You spoil her you know that?” he questioned, though there wasn’t much mirth to his voice.
“Not that much. She just has a lot of energy,” Marcus responded, pushing up off the ground. He picked up one of the bags to carry it through to dining room off the kitchen. “Alexa, pause music.”
“Still, she knows the rules. We went over them half a dozen times before you moved in. I don’t need nor want my child to give you a heart attack because you didn’t hear her.” Jefferson sighed, crossing his arms as he leaned in the doorway between the two spaces.
“Jeff, you’ve done more than enough to accommodate me. More than someone could reasonably ask. If I’m not paying attention to my surroundings and my heart is really that weak, then a heart attack is my own damn fault,” Marcus lectured. Really, the man had done more than enough to assist him with his transition into Storybrooke, let alone his business start up. Compared to what he had seen… Well, a young girl would hardly be the death of him.
Jefferson adjusted his weight against the door frame, his face holding a curious expression though it dropped with another sigh. “I suppose you’re right.”
His hands dropped to the side as he stood up, turning towards the kitchen and taking a large inhale of the attractive aroma. “Besides, looking at that apron, who couldn’t benefit from having Julia Child living with them?”

Oh, and Hestia and 11 for Harry Potter asks!
11: who's your favorite non-human character?
To be honest, my favorite non-human character is either Dobby or Aragog.
Hestia: describe your ideal house
I actually had a friend ask me this the other day and it's quite long. But the short of it is a 2 story, stone cottage that looks like a witch hovel.
Scene
You turn off the street through a rod iron, ivy covered gate, Down a treelined rough brick drive, the house is hidden from the road by trees and the gate that is half cobblestone half rod iron with ivy spilling over the top in spots. The house is seemingly placed on a pedistul with rock stairs built into the hill from the drive that leads to a rock path through the small lawn that is littered with purple thyme and wildflowers that grow about ankle height.
Surrounding the house is a small cluttered garden of herbs and flowers purposefully creating a wild forest of witchy and homeopathic ingredients that smell divine. There is a well positioned porch that wraps around the opposite side of the house with more potted plants littering around a few chairs and an end table which holds a vintage bed warmer being used as an ashtray. The front door is purple and rounded at the top. With 2 mini windows in it and iron support bars acrost the wooden panelling.
Inside the front door there is a little stone tile entryway with shoes littering the wall to the right behind the door with hooks for coats . To the left there is a small table against the parallel wall with mail and a bowl for keys and an umbrella stand with hats and scarves and leashes for the animals. Passed the entryway the floor changes to older wood flooring, at the end of the wall to the right opens to the dining room with a rough cut, viking style, repurposed wood table with 8 chairs atop an area rug. The table has a hidden leaf to accommodate the 4 chairs stored at various places against the walls of the room. There is a beautiful Victorian style China cabinet filled with a variety of different china patterns on the far wall. There is a buffet table on the adjacent wall (across from the large window that faces the lawn) with a lovely doily runner and dried flowers displayed with tall candlesticks on either side and a crystal candy dish on one side filled with butterscotch and peppermint candies. There is a sliding pocket door beside the buffet table that leads to the kitchen.
The kitchen is a moderate size with vintage tins for each bulk ingredient, drying herbs and flowers hanging all around. There is more ivy growing around the cabinets, which have fogged glass doors, and the bottom cabinets have curtains. There is a garden sink with a window looking out to the wrap around porch and an island in the middle with a grate hanging above it which stores baking pans and hangs pots/pans and various other things. There is a door way to the left of the door you just came through that leads back to the hallway and a walk-in pantry to the right with a hidden root veggie and wine storage beneath a trap door in the floorboard. On the opposite wall of the pocket door you just came through between the oven and the refrigerator, there is a farm door that leads out to the back part of the porch with a secondary screen door.
Going through the door to the left you're back in the entryway/hallway where you can see into the open livingroom passed the bottom of the stairs. Beneath the stairs there is the half bath, a simple toilet and sink set up. The livingroom has a small library in the front of the house surrounding a bay window that doubles as a comfy reading nook crapped in vintage lace curtains. (There is no TV!) There is a wood burning fireplace in the center of the far wall an alter is set up on the mantle with a swing arm that holds my cauldron over the fire fronted by a couple of wingback chairs. To the right further in the house there is a Victorian style couch with a small but long coffee table (with floor pillows stored underneath) facing a TV mounted to the wall surrounded by mounted gaming systems and music system complete with record player. In the corner there is a closet with records, movies, internet router, board games, blankets, and other various things.
Up the wooden stairs the floor the center of the layout is hall with 5 doors. The hallway in the upper floor curls to the left. And there are 2 doors on the left, one ahead, and 2 on the right wall and on at the end of the hall to the left. The closest door is at the top of the stairs to the right. Which leads to an office/library/craft room with shelf's lining the walls except the wall with the window which has a work desk that houses my computer, various printers (3d philament/resin, ink, and graphite), and the scanner. There is a closet to the far right which houses various tools, fabric, etc. In the middle of the room is another work table that looks more like an oversized cutting mat with a few chairs and stools surrounding it. Looks like we've had more than a few paint and marker fights over it. There is a rocking chair in the corner with a small foot stool that has a lovely crochet throw over it for reading when I don't want to go downstairs.
Back in the hall the next door is a full bathroom which has a lovely larger than standard tub in it with a small cabinet over the toilet and a farmhouse washing basin style sink. It is more of a vintage meets farmhouse style guest bathroom. With tile flooring and a small window with a stained glass. There are a few hooks for towels behind the door and on the wall beside the tub for easy access. A few small fluffy rugs to keep people from leaving puddles on the floor. The curtain for the tub is wrap around with some sort of quilted pattern on it. It's not a huge room but is big enough to bathe the baby while your teenager tries to fix their eyeliner in the mirror. Lol
(All of the floors are wood with at least one area rug in it to accent the color or mood of the room)
The next door you come too is a guest bedroom. It is about the size of the office with a queen sized bed pushed almost against the far right corner. There is a small end table with a lamp allowing for a bit of walking room between the bed and the far wall (opposite the door). There is a small chest of drawers across from the bed to the right with a vanity mirror and a vintage washbasin on top complete with pitcher and handtowel. Beside it is a small door to a closet with extra linens and pillows. It's relatively empty other than a few extra things like winter coats and a few hidden Christmas gifts for next year and a forgotten golf bag that dad left last time he was there to visit. Beside the door to the left there is a taller chest of drawers with a few pictures of family get togethers and fun memories on the walls. There are two windows one that overlooks the backyard and one that is on the wall opposite the door. It's simple cute and cozy.
The next door is the kids bedroom. (If I have three the guest bed will be the oldest siblings room before they move out and the younger two will more than likely be twins so they'll share or will segregate boy/girl etc.) The kids room is bigger than the guest room. With a bed coming out of the middle of the wall to the left. To the right there is a large mirror-double-doored wardrobe which houses clothes, shoes, uniforms, hats, winter wear etc. In the Tob there is a shelf for a few extra linens for sleep overs or whathaveyou. There is again 2 windows. There is a blown glass style window above the headboard of the bed which has a drapey sheer curtain that falls behind the bed, and there is a more stained glass window to the wall opposite the door that is behind a sort of work desk littered with books and papers and a laotop. Their school bag hangs by one shoulder strap off the chair. There is a more modern floor lamp beside it with a rubbish bin beneath it overflowing with wadded paper. There is a bookshelf to the right of the desk between the wardrobe and the wall full of novels and a radio/Bluetooth speaker. It also stores games and other things my kid has collected (stolen from me) over the years. On the wall to the left of the door is a huge lovesac covered in laundry next to the laundry basket in the corner. There are a vanity to the right of the bed and a small end table to the left (between the bed and the wall). both are littered with books, jewelry, makeup, niknacks, chargers, and a lamp. I don't want to know what's under the bed, but there is a small chaise at the foot of the bed. There is enough floor space to have a blanket fort or a small sumber party of about 6 kids.
The last room is the master suite. You walk in the door, and there is an attached bathroom to the left. Through a door at the far corner of the room. The queen sized bed is rod iron, with a lovely victorian Italian feel to it. It is against the far wall coming out from the middle with an end table on either side (his and her style). At the foot of the bed there is a chaise with shoes underneath. To the right of the door there is a window that overlooks the front of the house, it looks to have a bit of a window seat for reading. There is a glider chair int he corner beside the window. With a foot stool infront of it. To the left between the glider and the bedside table seems to be a combination of a quilt rack and a Butler station with a hanging suit and a little surface with my husband's daily accessories on it (wallet, belt, cologne, rings, knives, etc). To the left of the entry door is a bit more witchy/girly. There is a small writing desk that looks to double as a vanity with a collection of vintage and antique niknacks with drawers and built-in storage for my jewelry, knives, stamps, stationary, passports, etc. Between the vanity and the bathroom door looks to be a 5 panel changing screen where I have a few outfits hanging on a vintage clothes rack behind it. my silky house coat and a towel seem to have taken residence draping over one of the screen panels. Through the bathroom door there is a larger garden claw-foot tub with a Waterfall showerhead that takes up the majority of the back wall. There is stone tile flooring that also lines the walls about a 3rd of the way from the floor. The sink is to the left of the door and is a bit modern and standard with cabinetry beneath in storing towels (extras included) as well as toiletries and toilet paper. There is a cabinet over the toilet to the right that stores most of my body and hair products including my husband's few various products for hair care and maintenance. There is a small stainglass window that lets in natural light between the tub and the toilet where the towel rack is mounted just below it. And there are a few hooks behind the door as well as right next to the tub(to the left) for towels and robes for dressing.
When you go back downstairs passed the half bath between the stairs an dthe livingroom there is a sort of mudroom/laundry room. That leads to the back porch (is about 8 feed from the kitchen door which is to the right) to the left there is a set of stairs that lead you to the little bit of a backyard that has a trampoline and an in-ground pool. There may be a 2 door garage to the left where the workshop is for building and restoring/fixing things along with a section for gardening stuff. I really hate grads do there will be little pads of clover and creeping thyme as well as little gardens lining the gate and overgrown ivy with a few trees--one has a tree swing. Maybe the kid and my spouse plan on building a treehouse soon. I probably have a little garden labarenth hidden in the corner somewhere to do ritual outside. Or offering or whatever.
Yea... That's my house.

Buying Furniture In Lakemba
Tumblr media
When choosing new furniture in Lakemba, you should keep in mind the following:
If you're buying a couch, choose a comfortable one; if you're buying a dining table, make sure it's big enough to accommodate all of your guests; buy an executive desk that is large enough to fit your computer and peripherals. When it comes to style, there are many different looks, from sleek and modern to rustic farmhouse, so choose what fits your personal preference best.
Keep in mind how comfortable the furniture will be to clean
Upholstered pieces like sofas and chairs need to ensure they have covers that you can remove for cleaning versus cleaning in place, which can leave watermarks. Also, consider how easy it will be to clean spills off hard surfaces like tables or desks with a quick wipe-down versus having them refinished by a professional every few years because they get so scratched up over time from daily use. Lastly, don't forget about the rugs! Choose a rug material such as wool or cotton that can easily withstand spills without becoming stained within seconds of contact with liquid (a number one cause for expensive replacements). And perhaps most notably, when picking out furniture in Lakemba, always look at customer reviews first!
Know your current and future requirements
How will you be using the new furniture?
When choosing furniture in Lekamba for your home, you have to consider what kind of activities will happen in that room. For example, if it's a bedroom, you need to consider what actions will occur there. Are there going to be lots of people sleeping? Will they sleep together or separately? Will there be any children around? These things are essential when deciding what type of mattress is best suited for that particular room. Suppose it's an office space where people will be working on computers all day long. In that case, having comfortable chairs is crucial and having enough lighting so that everyone can see well enough without straining their eyes too much from staring at screens all day long. You should also consider if multiple people will share this space at once or only one person.
For how long do you plan on using it?
When shopping for furniture, you need to think about how long you plan on using the piece before it's time to replace it. You can't just look at the price tag and think, "This will last me forever." If you're going to be using this furniture for a while, then, by all means, go for quality but keep in mind that sometimes it's better to spend less on a piece that will have a shorter lifespan if you're constantly updating your look and don't want to invest too much in any one style. If you know that your kids will be taller than your dining room table in five years or that you'll only need a desk for a year before moving into a more prominent place, then there's no sense spending too much on something that might end up getting scrapped.
Is the furniture made of good quality material?
1. What materials are used to make the furniture?
2. How to check the quality of materials and what makes a material good or bad?
3. Which materials are considered to be of the best quality?

I HEART WORK
Who are you: Paula Flynn
What is your work: Editor of The Shopkeepers
Where can we find you: Website | Twitter | Instagram | Facebook
Describe your work in 5 words: Sharing A World of Shops!
Can you tell us a little about your what you do? I share photos, stories and insights into a community of inspiring shops and shopkeepers. I love to help promote and profile shopkeepers that keep this vibrant tradition relevant in today’s fast evolving world.
Why did you want to start The Shopkeepers? I have a curiosity about the changing world of retail. In the past decade we shop more and more online and there seems to be more products and choices available to us. I was curious about the impact our changing shopping habits would have on bricks and mortar shops. There are many shopkeepers that have created unique experiences for those who still enjoy the tactile and sensory pleasures of visiting beautiful stores. These are the shops I find interesting and like to showcase.
Can you tell us about your career journey and how you got to where you are today? I am a printed textile/fashion graduate from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. I’ve worked as a designer and consultant in both New York and Paris, and some of the brands I have worked for include; Gap, Orla Kiely, Liz Claiborne, Karl Lagerfeld and Chloe. Over the course of my career, I have had experience in all aspects of the retail trade, so have a good understanding of what is involved in creating a successful venture. During the 1990’s, I was very fortunate to have travelled throughout Europe and Asia, including London, Paris and Tokyo, researching shops and trends. It was an amazing experience! I wish I had had an iPhone back then!
I have always appreciated a well-designed, cohesive collection, whether that be a small group of items or a whole store with a compelling point of view. I have a great admiration for designers and retailers that are able to build their concept into a successful business. A few years ago, just after completing a freelance project, I had the idea to start a blog focused solely on shops, as I felt it had not been done by anyone before.
Where is your office/studio and what is the view out of your window? I don’t have a specific office or studio as I am on the move a lot, so that was a big part of the appeal of this project. I can work anywhere! I am based in New York City and from my apartment there my view is a constantly moving tableau of the East River from the 35th floor.
What is the first thing you do when you get to work? Drink coffee and check my emails.
What are the tools of your trade? My Mac Book, Sony camera, iPhone 7+, and a collection of notebooks.
What can’t you work without? All of the above!
Why do you love what you do? I love exploring and the enchantment that comes with the discovery of a new shop or place.
What are your three favourite shops and why? There are way too many I love for various reasons. Biba, Rainbow’s End, and Liberty London are three shops that had a great impact on me, two of which sadly no longer exist. I was lucky to visit the amazing Biba on Kensington High Street, and was completely blown away by it’s originality and merchandising, and probably launched my ‘shop’ fascination. I worked throughout my art college days at Rainbow’s End in Dublin and learned that I had an affinity for retail. As a printed textile student I have always been fascinated by Liberty, and find it an amazing brand with their signature textiles and iconic building.
Who or what inspires you? People that create their own paths in life.
What is the best advice you have received? After graduating college I was so excited to have an interview with Liberty of London. I don’t remember the name of the person I met - but I do remember her advice. She said it wasn’t easy to start a career in design and to persevere, as the biggest hurdle was getting that first job, and that in her experience as many as 50% of candidates gave up and never worked in the field they trained for.
One moment in your career you will always remember? There are several – though getting my first job in a design studio in New York was really exciting.
What is the best part of your job? Being outside, and not stuck behind a desk. I love meeting people and learning new skills all the time.
And the worst? Not having enough time to do everything I would like to.
What are you working on at the moment for The Shopkeepers? Working on publishing more of our ‘Going Places’ guides as possible. The guides are a lovely way to include multiple destinations within one area and have proved popular with our readers.
What single thing would improve the quality of your life? Help with social media – it’s so time consuming!
Can you share any of your favourite websites or Instagram feeds? Instagram: At the moment I am enjoying the creativity of All That Is She, The Slow Traveler and Humphrey & Grace. There are many beautiful floral and styling feeds like Nonihana and Local Milk, and travel feeds like Tiny Atlas Quarterly and Culture Trip that are very inspiring. I love the random nature of scrolling and searching through Instagram and discovering great images and accounts.
Websites: Remodelista and Gardenista are great resources, and they just launched a new site, The Organized Home.
What have you learned the hard way? My way around a computer - sadly it didn’t come naturally.
If you could do another job what would you like to do and why? I would love to be a documentary filmmaker. Since getting behind a lens, I have become intrigued with the film making process and there are so many worthy stories waiting to be told.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to do what you are doing? Blogging consumes a huge amount of time! It’s not just creating content, there is so much involved in social media as well, so if you are going to blog, be sure it’s something you’re passionate about.
If you could be someone for a day who would it be? Annie Leibovitz. I am so much more comfortable taking photographs of inanimate objects. I would love to learn what I could, even in one day, from a master of portrait photography.
Do you have a secret ambition still to achieve? Playing the piano and running a marathon.
What is your personal motto? Life is too short not to do the unexpected sometimes.
What would you like to be doing in five years time? Hopefully The Shopkeepers will have continued to have evolved, so as well as what I’m doing now, I will be able to be involved in other new projects, and continue to travel to new destinations to discover more shops.
If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it? Yoga and reading.
How would you like to be remembered? Kindly.
Thank you Paula for talking to The Lifestyle Editor.

K/S Sentinel AU 3/?
Part One, Two
Tarsus IV Agriculture Colony, star date 2245.37
Jim had been on the planet’s surface for less than six hours, and he’d apparently seen all that Tarsus IV had to offer. Which is to say: orange dust, and miles and miles and miles of wheat. He’d ended up staying aboard the USS Brighton for one more night when his uncle didn’t show up to collect him from the shuttle landing zone. Engineer Bartholomew “Call me Lo, aucht, only my granny calls me Bartholomew what’s the matter with you?” Augustine had taken him back up to ship after four hours of waiting because he couldn’t leave a minor all to his lonesome on a strange planet, now could he?
Jim wasn’t supposed to hear Lo arguing with Captain Hathaway that some kind of exception had to be made to that minimum-15 years old rule, someone like Jimmy Kirk Engineering prodigy, an’ I don’ say that lightly, shouldn’t be allowed to wither away on a mudball like Tarsus IV. Of course, Jim had been lying flat on the upper deck at the time, and couldn’t help a rush of hope as Lo made an impassioned argument to file for an exception and keep Jim aboard.
To his everlasting shock, Hathaway had finally admitted that she’d already tried, and not only was Starfleet disinclined to pin an exception on a proven fuckup like Jim Kirk, but his mother wouldn’t agree to it anyways. Jim thought he should be touched that Hathaway and Lo had tried to go to bat for him, but mostly he’d been angry. Story of his goddamned life.
Uncle Joe had finally commed the ship, apparently in a panic over Jim not being at the drop site when he’d arrived almost ten hours late. He claimed that the hovercar had broken down, and they didn’t get comm reception in the canyon, blahblahblah. Lo had shuttled him down with the last of the passengers to disembark, complaining the entire way that he was going to be short-handed, and what in Brigid’s fiery name had Jim done to his coolant system, civilian observer didn’t include meddling with things Lo was going to have to spend half the cruise home just figuring out, thank you very much.
“Didn’t mean to leave you at the station,” Joe said again. He’d already apologized twice, but Jim’s lack of response had apparently not relieved him of enough guilt, so he was taking another stab at it. “It’s exciting, being on a frontier colony, but it has its drawbacks.”
Jim held up his hands and counted off on his fingers, “Poorly designed comm system, no planetary transporters, no civilization of any kind, five years from the next ‘Fleet restock at least, and apparently no environmental controls in the hovercars. But hey, at least you’re not going to run out of wheat or dirt anytime soon.”
Joe made a soft noise against the back of his throat. His hands flexed on the hovercar’s controls. Jim shifted in his seat and pressed against the window, watching miles of green wheat lying down under the wind. Everything smelled like burnt dust, and the sun was slightly larger and slightly brighter than Sol, giving everything a flat, washed out look. The hovercar’s AC wheezed out a tired stream of almost-cool air, and Jim glared at the vents – he was going to have to fix that in a hurry. It was bad enough that he had to spend at least the next three years covered in orange dust, there was no way he was going to do it without working AC.
“I know a brand new ag colony isn’t the place a young boy wants to be,” Joe said after a few miles of wheat and dust and wheat and dust. Why the hell they were even using hovercars when the fine dust was just going to clog all the intakes and make them crap out was way beyond Jim. An old-style wheeled vehicle would be better suited. He leaned up in his seat to get a better view of the outside of the vehicle. He could probably retro-fit the chassis.
“I guess life’s been pretty tough for you late, huh? Losing your daddy before you ever knew him.”
“Oh, haven’t you heard? I have Frank.”
Joe made another uncomfortable noise. He shifted his bulk in his seat and tugged at the accelerator too hard so they jerked forward before settling into a rattling pace. After a few minutes, he throttled back to something the hovercar was more comfortable with, and the alarming whine of the engine dulled down a hum. Joe scratched at his cheek. Tarsus IV had only been an active colony for five years, but Joe looked like he’d been grown right out of the dirt. His skin was leather hard and deeply tanned until he nearly matched the color of the ground. He had scruffy dark hair cropped close to his head, and great bushy eyebrows. Jim imagined that when he went gray, he’d look like every single stereotype of a Midwestern farmer.
“I know about Frank,” Joe rumbled. “Mira and I invited you out with us for a reason, son. I know you haven’t seen either of us since you were too young to remember, but it didn’t seem like you were… doing well in that house.”
Jim eyed him suspiciously. It sounded like a trick, an opportunity for him to open his big mouth so Joe could call him a liar. Jim wasn’t going to bite. He made a noise himself, a deliberate imitation of Joe’s grunt, and turned back to the window. Joe didn’t say anything else. They’d been driving for over five hours, and still had three more to go. Jim hunched down in his seat and closed his eyes to discourage his uncle from making any more conversation, and tried to sleep. His thoughts strayed back to cramped engineering bay of the USS Brighton, and from there to the ship’s equally cramped bridge.
~*~
If Jim had thought about it at all, he would have expected Mira Kirk to be the same kind of leather-tanned, sturdy, dusty, and careworn as her husband, but she was about as far from Joe Kirk as she could get. Jim was small even for a twelve year old, but Mira had only maybe an inch or two on him. She was carefully pale, the kind of fair skin that needed to be carefully managed even in a city. Her chestnut hair was already starting to gray at the temples, but she had it buzzed even shorter than Joe’s, so it was a little hard to tell.
“We’re happy to have you, Jim,” Mira said, grabbing Jim by his upper arms and squeezing. “You must be roasting up in that leather jacket. Come on, I’ll show you to your room, and let you get a bath. Between the both of you, it looks like you brought half the road home with you. Not you!” she told her husband, holding out one finger – the top of her head barely came up to Joe’s chest. “You go hose off in the garden and dump those pants in the refresher. I can smell that damn hovercar all over you. Why the hell you insist on that silly thing even though it breaks down every other week. I’m surprised you made it there to pick up Jim at all.”
“Almost didn’t,” Joe grunted affably, and then obligingly stepped backwards into the mud room and closed the door behind him.
Jim had no idea what to make of them. He held onto the strap of his backpack to keep his hand busy, but hurried forward to take his suitcase when Mira stooped down to get it. She batted his hand away and pushed him toward the stairs. Despite the colony’s backwards appearance, the house was as modern as anything Jim had seen in Riverside, and definitely newer than the house he’d grown up in. He’d expected to come up the drive and see the same rickety wooden farmhouse, as if it had just been scooped up off the Iowa soil and dragged behind the starship, but it was a sleek, well-designed building of pale plexipaneling with big windows and a solar roof.
“Your room is just there at the end of the hall. Joe and I are down on the bottom floor. I thought you’d prefer your privacy.”
“Harder to sneak out of, more like,” Jim muttered.
“Oh, I wouldn’t think so,” Mira responded, though he hadn’t meant for her to hear. Jim felt his cheeks heat up. “First of all, you could always just take the stairs down to the front door, but if you insist on going down the hard way, there is a tree just outside the window. I imagine you’ll do just fine.” She shouldered past him into the room and set his suitcase down on the floor. “There’s an attached bathroom with a sonic shower and all that fancy jazz. There’s a water shower setting if you prefer, and don’t worry about the water. I know it looks drier than Satan’s left ass cheek out there, but there’s plenty underground, and we have a gray water system of course.”
She put her hands on her hips and surveyed Jim along with his room. “We didn’t know what kind of things you liked, so we left it plain. I’ve been told you’re a handy thing with a computer, so I’m sure you’ll figure out the wall settings, and if you let me know what kind of things you want, I’ll see what I can do about getting them. We’re a little backwater, alright, but we have some of the comforts of home here.”
She dusted her hands off. “Right. I’ll get started on supper, I’m sure you’re hungry. Way I remember it, boys your age are always hungry. Get washed up and settled in, come on down whenever you feel up to it.” She tapped one hand lightly on Jim’s chest on her way out the door, and then waved a hand over the sensor to close it behind her.
Left alone in the wake of whirlwind-Mira, Jim gaped at the door for several seconds before turning a slow circle around the room. It was just a rectangular space with a double bed, a tall dresser, a desk and accompanying chair, and the closet. The wooden floor was covered with a rug in a geometric pattern of blues and browns, and there was a light globe on the bedside table. Jim put his hand on the wall by the window and drew it down toward the floor to dim the window. He dimmed it all the way down to opaque black and then dragged his hand up the other direction, passing through the translucent setting up to luminous opaque white. His crappy bedroom curtains on Earth sure as hell couldn’t block out the light as well as a window in a house in the middle of freaking nowhere.
Jim found a console next to the bed and in a few seconds, he’d changed the walls from blank white a field of stars. They didn’t move exactly right, but he would have time to fix it later. So far the house wasn’t as bad as he was expecting, but it wasn’t like he would have much else to do on planet dirt. If Aunt Mira really didn’t mind him playing the house computer, then he wasn’t going to be quite as bored as he’d thought.
