Been thinking about my Saltburn boys and how Farleigh is so obviously a Slytherin but with Oliver and Felix it could almost be any combination? Walk with me…

Slytherin Oliver and Hufflepuff Felix: Felix is a total sweetheart, a cutie patootie, the Cedric Diggory of his generation! Everyone loves him. He’s just so easy to love. Oliver is… well. He’s without a doubt the most knowledgeable student when it comes to the Dark Arts, there’s rumours that he’s a parselmouth and he moves in complete expressionless silence… Needless to say, everyone is shocked at their sudden relationship. How the two of them became close is a total mystery, and witnessing their intimacy feels like watching a legend in the making… but Felix smiles brighter now, and everyone has seen the small smiles Oliver directs at Felix, so you won’t catch anyone complaining.

He may seem relaxed and lax a lot of the time, but he’s smarter than he looks. He’s silently top of a lot of his classes, and he won the Triwizard Tournament effortlessly. He’s charismatic and charming and Oliver being his best friend makes no sense to any of his Slytherin circles. Oliver is a soft spoken, soft hearted, Hufflepuff who’s muggle-born heritage means that he should never have been on Felix is radar. Felix is the most sought out match in pureblood society, so everyone is shocked – and Farleigh is completely unimpressed – when it looks like Felix might genuinely be courting Oliver. (All the other students don’t get why all that pureblood nonsense even matters. Sure it’s sad to realise that Felix is off the market, but have you seen him with Oliver?! Oliver’s usually so reserved, but he absolutely glows when Felix is around. Felix can be pretty cocky sometimes, but with Oliver he mellows out and he can be so soft and sweet. Oliver is so timid that he barely notices, but everyone else can see that Felix looks absolutely smitten whenever Oliver’s around. It’s the purest love story, and all that exhausting blood purity stuff pales in comparison).

Saltburn Potter AU (but fuck JK for ruining this for us)

Oliver (muggle born) is the newest student at Hogwarts. A transferee from Erehnoll (school of magic located in northwestern Ireland)

Previously: House of Spaniel (yellow, brown, beige) known for powerful, stealthy, and rebellious wizards

Currently: Slytherin House

A little sad he’s no longer wearing his prev house colors until he meets Felix, a hufflepuff who wears his yellows proudly like the sun.

Felix (pureblood) comes from a long line of hufflepuffs (Sir James) and slytherins (Elspeth).

Hufflepuffs are known underground partiers. They have access to dealers that sneak contraband into the school. Extremely popular and very friendly, everyone wants in on their secret common room parties.

Venetia and Farleigh are slytherins.

Farleigh is half-Veela and never wears his house colors cuz he says they clash w his closet and hangs out in every common room so much that no one really knows which house he is

Felix reaches out to Oliver because he feels bad that he keeps getting bullied (he’s guilty that he can’t stop Farleigh) ((Oliver is very good at looking very pitiful))

They become close enough that Oliver confesses that his family was killed in a werewolf attack (lie) and he was raised in an orphanage until he could go to school (lie)

Truth: Oliver was attacked in his first year by a werewolf and lived. Now he hides away every full moon so no one knows what he is. His family is very much alive but not in communication in with him (he cut them off)

Oliver tries to win over Venetia and Farleigh by impressing them with his own magic (more powerful for their year) and his ability to get them drunk using potions (so they never get caught by the teachers w alcohol)

Felix starts getting demanding over Oliver’s time, starts asking where he goes thatvhe won’t say, starts believing Farleigh when he says Oliver was doing shit behind his back

Felix follows Oliver one night, doubting his excuse of late night studying until he finds himself in a secluded part of the school that no student is allowed to go. And it’s the full moon.

sorting the saltburn characters in hogwarts houses with headcannons pt. 1

i'm shocked that no one have done this yet when literally a good portion of the film was them reading harry potter by mskingbean89. so here are my thoughts on what hogwarts house are the characters in because it's totally canon that they've debated what their houses is and have done a 2007 version of a buzzfeed quiz (or did buzzfeed quiz exist during that time? idk im too young).

let's start with the easiest to sort for me.

Felix Catton is in GRYFFINDOR

James Potter got reincarnated as Felix Catton (canon)

Pure Blood (duh) with saviour complex.

Is part of a quidditch team as a chaser.

obsessed with sugar quills, has a lifetime supply in his room.

throws the best parties in the gryffindor dorm.

not sure about his patronus but i think its some kind of winged creature like hippogriff, phoenix, or swan because of maze scene but honestly it could be like a wolf or something. im not familiar with animals at all.

Oliver Quick is in SLYTHERIN

Half blood (mum's the witch) I think he's a cross between tom riddle, severus snape and peter pettigrew.

one of the meeker ones, definitely bullied by slytherin peers.

potions and dada are his favourite subjects.

if he's not stalking felix, he's watching himself be hugged by him in the mirror of erised before meeting him. stole the mirror of erised when felix died.

patronus is either a moth or a deer, i think.

is an animagus because he will go through that length to be interesting in felix catton's eyes and definitely stalks him using his animagus form.

honestly i dont know how a harry potter au with the exact same events as the film be delivered because their hogwarts house is already a telltale of their personality. i can only imagine them being all gryffindors like the mauraders to pull that off. and like of course the house rivalry is also a problem but let's not talk about the semantics of this world.

Secret fifth thing: Felix Catton wants to like literature because people like Farleigh can be so clever about it without even reading...but Felix is not going to get it, and nobody taught him how to try harder to get it.

Animal Farm by George Orwell or Watership Down by Richard Adams is going to literally be about talking animals to him. They're the same level of entertainment to him as The Wind in the Willows, so the themes only apply literally to talking farm animals and woodland critters.

While practically everybody was reading the Harry Potter series in 2006-2007, so everybody had different relationships to the work (blorbo before "blorbo" was a term, the magic system, the societal themes, arguments about 'shipping, the writing style, fan theories versus book spoilers...) Felix would probably think he's a Gryffindor only because the book makes that the "obvious" thing to be...not because he took a moment to wonder whether or not he really was any of these traits, or whether there would be a difference between the House he wanted and the House he would actually get sorted into. What he thinks, what he wants, he gets, so often that it doesn't occur to him to question if he himself had the qualities to get to where he would be comfortable or if that comfort is really the best. ("People say I could be a Slytherin because I'm deeevious ~ " not wondering why ambition in this story context is bad, or if 11-year-olds deserve to be doomed to getting sorted into that House the way this story treats them all.)

I think he would read each book for the plot, and then start to feel fatigue at around the fifth book when the puzzle-mystery part became less the feature of the narrative, but he would commit to finishing the series because everybody was still talking about it.

Maybe he would hear the story that the author pulled herself up by her bootstraps and went from scrawling novel drafts on paper napkins to living in a castle of her own from book sales and merchandise royalties alone, and probably decide "oooh this is a classic that I actually get to keep up with in my lifetime! let me get something about this book sewn into my skin in ink".

Felix probably felt so sorry for Poor Dear Harry until the character started capslocking in The Order of the Phoenix, because that's plainly bad form. "I know what it's like to lose somebody you care for a lot. My dog died, you know. There's simply no excuse for shouting that loudly all the time..."

But back at school if he was given any more complicated literature to read, and he obviously didn't understand the complicated part, then I think the teachers would really let him get away with thinking however he wanted about it. He's so charming and seems so well-meaning that he would probably get given extra marks for bothering.

With Lord of the Flies he would probably say "Of course Piggy should die" with wide-eyed innocence, oblivious of the implications. (A tropical island must be survival of the fittest. There's no air conditioning there, so it was a mercy kill really. Fortunately that sort of thing never happens in civilization.)

Blankets you sleep with: One. Pillows, on the other hand..... Favourite bands/artists: I don't really know. Marching band??? The London Symphony Orchestra? The Met?? Panic at the Disco? Arthur Rubinstein? Lang Lang? Bobby Darin? Frank Sinatra? I have a lot. Dream Trip: Germany. I hope to go there for university soon here, to study and intern at a biomedical engineering lab in Stuttgart. However, I'd also want some time to just travel around and see everything. Go up to Berlin and Hamburg and down to München, and to Austria, specifically Wien and Salzburg. However, I also really want to go to Ireland and Scotland. My great great great grandparents were Irish and German immigrants, so I want to go see where my family is from. What I’m wearing right now: Black pyjama pants and sports bra. More stuff for my Saltburn Potter AU cuz I can’t stop thinking about them

Oliver has remedial classes since he’s a transfer student and ends up in tutor classes with Felix for History of Magic.

Oliver’s strategy to get to Felix is focused more on getting close to Venetia and Farleigh (since they’re in the same house)

Oliver sabotages Felix’s scrolls so Oliver can volunteer to help Felix with his homework.

Felix takes Oliver to his first trip out in Hogsmeade. They go shopping and Felix almost buys out the entirety of Honeydukes when he learns Oliver has never had any non-muggle candy.

Felix bought Oliver’s first broom and teaches him flying. (Oliver ignores the fact that he is fucking terrified of heights since he gets to hug Felix from behind)

Felix likes buying Oliver new clothes, always commenting on his secondhand uniform and scarf.

Farleigh realizes that Oliver can do non-verbal magic because he caught Oliver getting revenge for him against a homophobic student. (Oliver casted a spell on their shoes that made them walk into every wall.) Only the professor figured out who it was and gave Oliver detention.

Farleigh and Oliver develop a love-hate relationship. They one up each other in classes but also like making snarky side comments about everyone else.

Venetia gets closer to Oliver because she thinks its cute he’s so “exotic” and finds his accent funny. She talks his ear off about relevant pop-culture things and gossip while Oliver shoulders the work of their Potions class.

Farleigh catches on that Oliver sneaks around at night (somehow without getting caught by the teachers or prefect).

Felix totes around the fact that he is the only one Oliver shares his personal life with. (He’s starting to get jealous that Oliver is housemates with Venetia and Farleigh.)

Once Felix accepts Oliver into the group, Oliver shadows Felix everywhere. They sit together when they eat, when they’re hanging out in the quad and when they do study dates in the library.

Felix loves going into the muggle world to party and takes Oliver into his first ever club.

They get too drunk to make it back to the Slytherin Dungeon so Oliver spends the night in Felix’s room. (They also get doused in vinegar because they mess up the password for the Hufflepuff common room too many times.)

Arguably, the most difficult house affiliations to work with, given their personalities, is Gryffindor Oliver and Ravenclaw Felix but! It’s absolutely a valid pairing if you get a little creative with it. Walk with me again, I swear it’ll be interesting:

No one can understand why exactly Oliver is a Gryffindor… well at least no one could until Oliver spends his first summer holiday at Saltburn and #that field scene takes place. Farleigh is many things, but a saint isn’t one of them, and you can’t blame him for owling everyone he knows to tell them about how he thought the summer was doomed to quiet and uninteresting things with quiet and uninteresting Oliver, but Merlin! Oliver is far from uninteresting! He’s suave and hot and flirty when he wants to be. By the time school starts up again rumours of Oliver’s killer physique have spread like wildfire, and though no one can seem to get any real confirmation, Oliver’s silent confidence speaks absolute volumes on its own.

Felix being sorted into Ravenclaw is met with a moment of shocked silence because really? Felix? He’s pretty, he’s adored, he’s well spoken… but my word, he simply doesn’t seem that smart. What everyone doesn’t know is that Felix learnt the first two and a half years of the Hogwarts syllabus in the summer holidays his first year because he had absolutely nothing better to do. School is exhausting, and though he may know all the information, he makes no efforts whatsoever to apply any of it. He would rather spend his time making heart eyes at Ollie from across the room. That feels like a more useful use of his time.

Everyone thinks Oliver is tutoring Felix in the library but it’s actually the other way around. Felix even makes Oliver cute little colour coded study guides when he’s feeling extra needy for praise. Everyone thinks Felix is a flirt but Oliver can have anyone blushing in 5 minutes tops with his big blue eyes and his secretive smiles and that silver chain he usually hides under his clothes. Most people are absolutely destroyed by Farleigh, but Oliver is an interesting opponent who engages well and isn’t too afraid of Farleigh to fight back. Felix loses his glasses and he’s frantic looking for them only for Oliver to quietly walk over to him in the Great Hall and hand them over nonchalantly (No one needs to know that Felix forgot them in between Oliver’s bedsheets that morning. Felix can confirm just about every rumour going around about Oliver’s…)

Sytherin/Hufflepuff combo always melts my heart 😩👌🏻 and is absolutly perfect for them.

I feel that the Cattons are a pureblood lineage but they're all from different houses. The pureblood thing is almost an accident really.

Sir James is an obvious Hufflepuff, always cheerful and curious but he has his moments of seriousness too, family comes first, always. Absolutely obsessed with quidditch, he goes to every event. Became head boy at Hogwarts. Divination was one is favorite classes, he became very good at it. He is dangerously bad when it comes to flying a broom, like very VERY bad.

Elspeth is a Gryffindor, and I can imagine her in Hogwarts refusing to use red and gold cause "it does not match my complexion, I'm a cool summer". Some people thought for years that she was a Ravenclaw. She accidentally score some points to the other house by wearing a light blue pashmina or hair bow. A prefect scolded her for that and she relented, she started wearing a red and gold Gryffindor broach, a family heirloom. She's surprisingly good at potions. She had problems with transfiguration though.

Venetia is a Ravenclaw, she's the family artist. Since very young she showed a natural talent for everything related to art. Learnd to play the piano by imitation, looking at her granny do it. At 6yo she tried the violin, a year later she was playing Vivaldi with ease. She was fairly good at drawing and painting too but never seem particularly interested in it. She is especially gifted when it comes to dance, Elspeth took her to ballet classes at a very young age, and she excelled, but realized eventually that she didn't really enjoyed dancing, she was just good at it. She came back to the violin and piano and now she's learning to play the flute. Really good at charms and transfiguration. She had problems with care of magical creatures.

Farleigh is a Slytherin, what else is there to say? His mom is a Slytherin too. His dad was from the house of Horned Serpent in Ilvermorny. Cunning and competitive, a dangerous rival. He doesn't hate Oliver, is just the competition. He loves classes like history of magic, magical theory, runes, ancient studies. Is fairly good at DADA, but became a little obsessed with outshining Oliver so, he became excellent at it. Oliver didn't care whatsoever about that little competition and he still got a better mark. Awful at herbology, he doesn't like to get his hands dirty.

Felix is really bad at all the classes Farleigh loves, he just gets easily distracted and those clases are "deathly boring Farleigh, I don't know how you do it". Is naturally gifted at potions just like his mom and absolutely LOVES charms.

Oliver is really good at DADA but his favorite class is muggle studies cause is just funny to him. He loves reading the books as if they were the comic page from a newspaper. Only Felix knows about this. Once they sat together at the clock tower and Oliver took out his favorite muggle studies book and started explaining to Felix all the things that were wrong while laughing. By the end Oliver was crying from laughter and Felix was more confused than ever before but absolutely bewitched (ha!) by Oliver's laugh, so he kept asking about muggles just to see him smile. (They love eachother, i don't make the rules). He's bad at astronomy, he doesn't care for it.

Been thinking about my Saltburn boys and how Farleigh is so obviously a Slytherin but with Oliver and Felix it could almost be any combination? Walk with me…

Slytherin Oliver and Hufflepuff Felix: Felix a total sweetheart, a cutie patootie, the Cedric Diggory of his generation! Everyone loves him. He’s just so easy to love. Oliver is… well. He’s without a doubt the most knowledgeable student when it comes to the Dark Arts, there’s rumours that he’s a parselmouth and he moves in complete expressionless silence… Needless to say, everyone is shocked at their sudden relationship. How the two of them became close is a total mystery, and witnessing their intimacy feels like watching a legend in the making… but Felix smiles brighter now, and everyone has seen the small smiles Oliver directs at Felix, so you won’t catch anyone complaining.
