La Cathédrale de Faras, une ville de la Nubie ancienne et autrefois capitale du royaume de Faras (la Nobatie), fut construite et reconstruite du VIIIe au XIe siècle ap. J.-C. Son intérieur était décoré de centaines de fresques qui comptent parmi les plus beaux exemples de l’art paléochrétien visible au monde. Comme le site est désormais au fond du lac Nasser, tout ce qui reste de cette autrefois grande ville sont les œuvres d'art et les objets qui furent sauvés pour la postérité avant 1964.
