Release Rundown - DITZ and Mogwai
Words: Ben Forrester(Photo credit: Pedro Takahashi) DITZ – Never Exhale(Republic Of Music) Brighton based noise makers DITZ handed in one of my favourite debuts of 2022 with ’The Great Regression’. With a mash up of all that is good about the alt scene, this was a solid set that showed many sides to the quintet, without losing any of their identity. This led to the band becoming hot property on…

Rise of the Corrupted Xiāns
Happy Halloween as I present to you this incredible art that I made for a Darkstalkers Tribute Fanzine that I was honored to be a part of. 😈 As Cryas Darkstalkers is my thing, I had to find a way to represent my designs of the characters. So, what better way than to draw these dangerous, eerie forms of the Shao sisters? But now, with some touch ups! I have gone through the effort of fully redesigning the markings that adorn their bodies. I actually have a reference for the markings:
The scripts you see are ancient forms of 仙 or xiān. Considering their training was around the practician of Xiānshù and their village was named Xiān Mén Cūn, it stands to reason that the Xiān play an important part with Hsien-Ko and Mei-Ling. And considering their long-life spans after becoming jiangshi, one could say they are 'immortal'. And with these forms coming from influence of Corriyami, a substance that can 'corrupt' life forms, one could say they are like corrupted Xiān in the flesh. So it works together to give the sisters unique markings that are more specific to them both and their heritage.
This piece also serves as further practice into my take of basically the MvC2 art style and I am extremely proud how this came to look! New layer tricks and simplifying the sketch lines in the shaded areas. Some lighting stuff here and there. And another update to their designs to add natural lip colors to them. Hard to see a bit, especially on Hsien-Ko, but they are there! 😄
I just adore the way both sisters look. Hsien-Ko looking like an absolutely feral, battle hungry warrior ready to absolutely tear those who oppose her and her big sister. Mei-Ling calmly, yet menacingly commanding the shadow that flows from what was her arms. And with the way I composed the flow of this piece, it even looks like she is commanding Hsien-Ko with just a simple gesture... maybe even controlling her? Ooooo!
Speaking of Mei-Ling's shadow, I fully updated it with a brand-new look. While the blue/purple colors are still there to represent the Corriyami that flows in her veins, there is now this shimmering yellow energy that coats the flowing form. This energy is meant to be her own qì, as the original intent I always had was for her shadow to be a mixture of both her qì and Corriyami. With the color choices, it better reflects that and even has some fun color theory going on with complimentary colors. 😄
At this point, I am basically waffling on. Honestly, I hope you adore this art and can feel the passion I put into this. I truly thought I wasn't gonna be able to make the deadline for the zine. But then the motivation kicked in. The motivation to make incredible art of the two characters I hold dear! 🥹🩵💛
I'll leave you with two last things. First, a grayscale version of the piece for maximum spooky factor!
And most importantly, a link to the full version of the Darkstalkers Tribute Fanzine of 2024!
I implore you to give it a good look and see all the incredible art and passion of every artist that contributed to this. 🤩
And have a safe and most fun filled night on this eve of Hallow. 🎃🦇🌑

Happy 5th Anniversary to FE3H, a Game That Changed My Life
It is no exaggeration to say this game changed my life.
In 2019, pre-release, I wrote headcanons during the time about characters, friendships, romances, scenarios, AU, etc. I just decided one day to give it a go. I never imagined doing it but yeah! There were a few others who were writing headcanon lists too, and it was fun going back and forth with them. I got popular enough that people made suggestions if I could write headcanons about 'x, y, z'. It was an extremely fun time! I continued with the headcanons until late 2020.
(Alas headcanons and people suggesting ideas is a dead art unfortunately.)
I also wrote Tumblr drabbles about all manner of scenarios! The game made me rediscover my love for writing. I always enjoyed writing, but I lost that love--it was more of 'I like doing this, but I wish I could love it again'. It also made me get back into writing fanfiction. For years I thought I would not go back to those days, but I came back in full force (even 5 years on)
I wrote my very first gift fic to a headcanoner like me (it became the literal first 'Byleth Eisner & Jeralt Eisner' fic on AO3)! I literally wrote the very first 'Edelgard von Hresvelg/Dorothea Arnault' (Edelthea) fic ever on AO3!
From release date I kept writing fics. I wrote a multi-chapter fics. I wrote a smut, and I never thought I would: but funnily enough through reading FE3H AO3 smut it showed me that it can be an amazing way to flesh characters. And shameless smut is great as well!
I was never actively involved in fandom like this. I wrote fics in the past but left it at that. But I interacted with people and enjoyed it!
The very first discord I joined was based on FE3H. I didn't even know what a discord was until someone I went back and forth with invited and told me about. I never thought I would join something like that, but I did.
During 2019-2020 I received fanart for my drabbles, based on headcanons, and on fics. I had some comments say I single-handedly got them into Edelgard/Claude (Edelclaude) through my multi-chapter fic 'The Eagle and Deer Walk Parallel Paths'.
2020 I ran the very first Edelthea Week! I never imagined I would ever run a fandom event, and that I would also create a Twitter for it! I tried to run an EdeltheaNSFW Week but it failed twice, but that was a fantastic lesson: not all weeks are destined to succeed!
I participated in fan weeks, such as 'FE3H LGBT Week', 'Edelclaude Week 2020' & 'FE3H Polyship Week'. I tried out a big bang but had to step down, but I tried it!
Few months later I was invited to be a social media mod for the Edelthea Fanzine 'To a Brighter Dawn'. I said yes. I also became a writer contributor. I never imagined joining a fanzine ever, as a contributor and especially as a mod.
Not much happened fandom wise in 2021 due to stuff. I lose the will to write (in everything). BUT I put my hand up for the 'Choose to Prevail: An Adrestian Trio Fanzine' towards the end of the year and got in!
2022 and 'Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes' is announced. Eventually I got back into a active fandom role, having overcome 2021. I made dear friends through our love of FE3H that year. I ran Edelthea Week again! I participated in fan weeks again! I started writing two fics that have become near and dear to me: 'Can There Still Be a Brighter Dawn?' and 'The Eagle Who Must Leave Her Nest'.
2023 kept contact with friends. I assisted a friend of mine @laminecuisine (and made a new companion) to run 'Edelgard Rarepair Week'! First time co-running something, and it was fantastic!
2024. Made new friends through FE3H, and kept old ones too. Wrote a collab fanfic with amazing friend @laminecuisine! Ran the third Edelthea Week, am co-running 'Edelgard Rarepair Week 2024', AND will co-run 'FE3H Polyship Week/Weekend 2024'.
FE3H helped me overcome obstacles throughout my life. It brought joy throughout my life. It made me get out there (safely) in the world to interact with others and make friends through some, and acquaintances with others. Throughout these years I have participated in many fan weeks, I joined discords, put my hand up for fanzines, interacted with others, and so forth.
FE3H means so much to me. It has its flaws, absolutely, and problems in the fandom, but when you curate your experiences then you can meet some of the loveliest and most open-minded people out there. I am still a fan, and will be now and forever.
Thank you FE3H: for existing, giving me the gentle nudges to get involved, for rediscovering my love of writing, and trying things I never thought I would do and enjoy.

Review of 'The Bad Fire' by Mogwai
I was slightly worried that Mogwai had hit a point of staying in the same place, this wasn’t a massive bother to me as the way they make music has always appealed to me very deeply, but their last album (2022’s As the Love Continues) left me wondering if they had anywhere further to explore. That’s not to say it was bad at all, in fact i loved it, but it was very similar to the record they had put out a few years earlier (2017’s Every Country’s Sun), which wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for Mogwai’s prior discography being so different, album-to-album. Despite having only 2 years separating them, 1999’s Come On Die Young and 2001’s Rock Action showed incredible growth and fearlessness in their approach to making guitar-lead music, not to mention the impressive change from Rock Action to 2006’s Mr Beast, so although i enjoyed it, their last record left me wanting a lot more. The Bad Fire i think is a very good antidote to that. There is so much variation to this album, there is range from one track to the other that I would usually expect to find albums apart, but everything here belongs very snugly.
We start off with the mysterious synth-pop style God Gets You Back, a tense but euphoric track that sets the record off with a nervous atmosphere that gets more and more relaxed as the song goes on, with lyrics written by Barry Burns’ seven year old daughter and sung through a mysterious airy vocoder. It didn’t blow me away but as first singles go and as album opener’s go, this was a good start. It was once track 2 ‘Hi Chaos’ began playing that I was overjoyed, this is a moody and gloomy number, lead by layered clean-tone guitars in the verses and soaring delay heavy tremolo picking in the chorus, it gave me the feeling of floating down a river that’s just rougher than one would like it to be, with a sky that darkens in front of your eyes. I love this track, the drums are steady and firm, these strong driving guitar melodies layered on top of one another undercut by this stunning chorus, and then the final coda of the song getting more and more intense, it’s like the guitar is exploding, and then on top of that these wonderful high synth keys, it’s a work of magic, i immediately knew this would be a favourite.
A song i wasn't so immediately fond of is the third single ‘Fanzine Made of Flesh’, while being very upbeat, the verses feel a bit empty, this isn’t so much a problem with the song itself as much as it is just wishing there was a bit more going on in those patches, this itch is scratched by the manic arpeggiated synth in the chorus, screaming and shouting as it does in a way that shouldn't work, but it’s so outrageous and fast that you can’t help but dance, this song is definitely a grower, it’s a Mogwai song that wouldn’t be out of place at a houseparty, which i suppose for a band like them is impressive in its own right.
Now we come to my favourite track on the album, ‘Pale Vegan Hip Pain’ is nothing short of tear jerkingly beautiful, a simple 3 chord pattern played on the gloomy low end of a heavily reverb’d Telecaster, and with a steely cold piercing lead guitar on the high end. This song takes you on a lonely walk through a city at midnite, stopping to look upwards at the sky in the chorus to give a feeling of hope if ever possible. This is Mogwai at their most atmospheric and it just serves to show how amazing they are at that, those whispery synth soundscapes complimenting the lead lifts you off the ground, ever so slightly.
‘Hammer Room’ is an interesting one, all over the place, stylistically. We’ve got plucked violins, glitchy drum-machine beats, and almost ska pattern from Martin on the real drums, the most chaotic track on the album, like being trapped inside a pinball machine, it’s weird describing a Mogwai song as ‘fun’ but that’s really what this one is.
The album rounds off nicely with the 7 minute dreamscape ’Fact Boy’ which, to me, is Mogwai’s very own The One with the Wurlitzer if that makes any sense. It is a dreamscape, it doesn’t necessarily have a direction, it’s just a lovely chord progression and focuses more on how many textures it can fit into this one chord progression, and when the violin starts, it’s absolute magic. My only complaint is that it doesn’t last longer, this track could have easily been 10 minutes long and nobody would’ve minded. The Bad Fire is Mogwai’s best work in a long time, if nothing else it is a wonderful showcase of how versatile, creative and beautiful they can be when presented with tough times. It’s mellow, loud, melancholic, devastating, uplifting, moody, but warm throughout. A great listen for so many occasions, but best enjoyed with an active imagination and loud loud headphones. I really hope Mogwai make music for ever and ever.

Fanzine Friday #8: But a Paper Dress no. 3 (1990s) by an unknown author.
We don't have many fanzines that talk about Barbie; in fact, we could only find this one issue. But a Paper Dress (BPD) is a zine that talks about quite a few things, most of them related to punk rock and music. But there are two pages sharing what people think about Barbie as a cultural phenomenon -- though they're a bit of a different take on Barbie than what we've seen earlier this week. What do you think about Barbie (and Ken)?
Transcripts below the read more.

Text from the pages about Barbie, titled "Cowgirl on Wednesday"
Speculations on Sexist America's favorite pop icon. Names have been omitted for reasons of anonymity. [heart]
As a little girl I used to stand in front of my mirror naked, and compare Barbie's body to my own. I would compare our breasts, hips, tummy, and how far apart our thighs were. I would evaluate how I could change to look more like Her.
If you've ever taken off a Barbie Doll's hear you'd have seen a freakishly long neck, and at the top a kind of tan saucer connected to the body by a plastic ball. The saucer is mobile, and the ball will swivel around its "axis" so that Barbie will be able to move her pretty head to look up at the sky, over her shoulder to smile at something behind her, or just to nod. My friend Chris collects Barbie Doll heads, but I find the saucer-ball part much more fascinating. Keep in mind that without this golden choking hazard, Barbie's head would have to have to be secured in place only by being shoved down directly above her shoulders. This technique tends to make the doll resemble Barbie's heavier and less attractive cousin, White Trash Skipper. (Trailer Park and rifle sold separately)
I used to love Barbie dolls when I was little. I would imagine going to huge parties with my best friend Barbie by my side, and how we would make our grand entrance in extravagant pink gowns. Come to think of it, and the time she was my only friend...
When you lift up a Barbie Doll's arm you can see that her armpit is like a 3 dimensional sphere. I thought armpits were supposed to be concave.
[next page]
When I first heard about that GI Joe/Barbie voice box mix-up on television I thought I was going to split a side. What a great prank!
Maxie. Maxie could never wear Barbie's clothes. She could fit into them all right but she couldn't fill them out properly - especially with those straight arms. Man, Barbie could wear lime green spandex like no one else.
I remember that Ken's genitalia consisted of either flesh-colored briefs or a vague, androgynous "hump" kind of a shape that may have suggested a sort of phallus to the girls that cared. (myself included)
Every Barbie doll looks completely different - and it's not just the hairstyle or eye color either. I know they're made from cookie cutters, but I could never get rid of the feeling that each doll had an entirely unique identity. And I didn't name any of them "Barbie."
Barbie never menstruated. Barbie looks great under fluorescent lighting, and thin when she wears horizontal stripes. Barbie could be a rocket scientist on Tuesday, a [illegible] on Wednesday, a nurse on Thursday, Miss America on Friday, and still have time to run with the Rockers in time for their huge gig this weekend. Barbie's parents made sure to properly bind her feet when she was young so she looks very chic, but can't really wear shoes without scotch tape at hand. Barbie never fucked. (she hated sex) Barbie never ate despite her constant cooking. Barbie has never seen a corpse or a book or a cigarette or a vagina. Barbie's legs feel different from her torso.
Sideways text in the upper right corner: "If you or someone you know is interested in this subject, do not hesitate to order Barbara's divine fanzine, Hey There, Barbie Girl! for 2 dollars from HTBG! PO Box 819 Peter Stuyvesant Station, NYC 10009. Not only does she know the guys from Ms. Lun, but she's a peach of a zine editor as well."
