#fantastic beasts buffy verse

Because it’s that time of year where I descend into Buffy/Bangel(us) hell I now really want a Gramander or Goldgramander Buffy!verse. 

Like I dunno, Newt’s called as the first ever male Slayer (and everyone’s like WTF this idiot’s going to get himself killed did you see the way he was with that minor demon he’s calling it Pickett and lets it ride on his shoulder). And Theseus, who’s a Watcher, petitions to be Newt’s Watcher but gets turned down because the Council are assholes who don’t want any attachment between Watcher and Slayer because they only see the Slayer as a tool to be used for the greater good (I fucking hate those guys; this is literally canon in Buffy) and to ensure that they decide to assign one Percival Graves as his Watcher because “it’s Graves, there’s no way he’ll get attached - does the man even have feelings?”. And Tina’s a Watcher in training who’s mentor is Graves so where he goes, she goes. Also, pretend there’s a Watcher’s Council branch in America...I can’t remember if there is in the show. 

Newt’s not for the whole “slay first, ask questions later” thing ESPECIALLY where minor demons are concerned - they’re not causing harm, why the fuck would I kill them? What is wrong with you people? And so he still has his suitcase (that was expanded by a witch Theseus knew because he knew his younger brother would bring home minor, less-harmful demons...at least, he hoped) but while there’s still magical creatures, they’re seen more as “lesser demons” (Bowtruckles, Occamies, Nifflers, etc).

Anyway, Graves arrives and his eye is probably going to be permanently twitching because holy shit this goes against everything he was taught as a Watcher why is this my life, what did I ever do to you people to get stuck with an idiot.

 So Graves tries (and fails) to change Newt’s view on things and damn it, why does he not mind the fact Newt’s glowing with happiness at having rescued a nest of baby Occamies from being eaten by another demon and is cooing softly at them. Why is he becoming fond of the other man? He’s not supposed to get attached - especially since he’s sure Newt’s going to be the shortest Slayer ever in the history of all Slayers. 

But damn it, he realizes to his horror he’s falling in love with Newt and finds himself going along with him on patrols instead of just staying put and waiting for updates. Like he was taught. Because the thought of Newt getting killed without him there to possibly stop it is unbearable.

And when the Watcher’s Council finds out all hell breaks loose.

So Graves, Newt, and Tina are on the run from the Watcher’s Council (because like hell Graves is going to let them assign some asshole to be Newt’s new Watcher who will probably take extreme measures to “correct” his way of thinking) and end up hiding with Tina’s sister, Queenie, who’s a witch. 

Somewhere along the way Gramander happens, and possibly Goldgramander as well.

Maybe Credence is a half-demon the trio adopts (which puts them under suspicion of the Council)? Which then leads to the Council finding out about Newt and Graves (and Tina, possibly) relationship. Cue the group hiding with Queenie and her powerful coven, idk. 

This is fun - I’ll have to expand this later.

Audiobook review: Maya Phillips on her life as a proud “Nerd”

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, “nerd” is a “mildly derogatory” term that emerged in 1950s America to describe someone who’s “socially inept.” Today, the dictionary allows, it can also describe someone who embraces “a highly technical interest.”

While listening to the confident sweep of Maya Phillips’s Nerd: Adventures in Fandom from This Universe to the Multiverse, I kept returning to the title. Does the mildly derogatory “nerd” still have any meaning, I wondered, in a world where fantasy franchises have consumed the box office and where the fandoms Phillips embraces are avidly explored across the media spectrum? It seems like nerds have become, well, pretty cool.

Then, last night, I had a moment where I realized I was wearing an Ewok onesie, reading The Two Towers, and texting my friends about Star Trek wall calendars while my wife lay beside me reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Nerds.

Not until the very end of Nerd does Phillips explicitly engage with the idea that anyone might question the use of her time to dive deep on anime, comics, and novels about invented worlds. The bulk of Nerd is a series of chapters exploring weighty topics — among them religion, mental health, and race — through the lens of the author’s life. In each, Phillips explains how various imagined universes intersected with her own, providing inspiration and food for thought.

Chapter five, for example, is titled “The Slytherin Firebender of Sunagakure: Self-identification with fandom, racial and national identities in space westerns, and the persistent fantasy of manifest destiny.” It opens during “Christian existence” class in Phillips’s Catholic high school; develops into an examination of the fantasy-universe personality typology trope (Hogwarts houses, Avatar: The Last Airbender nations, Sex and the City characters); considers that phenomenon in the context of real-world signifiers like race and class; rolls back into an evocation of family road trips; and from there launches into a broader consideration of frontiers and identities in vintage westerns, Star Trek, Cowboy Bebop, Star Wars, and Firefly.

The book is so wide-ranging that it could be approached as a geography of contemporary imaginative universes, seen through the author’s individual lens. Unless you’re as well-versed as Phillips is regarding everything from Buffy to Akira, you’re bound to learn something about the fandoms you’re less familiar with. Phillips is generous in providing footholds for people with varying levels of knowledge about her subjects, but Nerd isn’t a 101: readers are expected to know offhand what a mecha is, and what “ship” means as a verb not involving transportation.

Growing up as a gen-X nerd, I scoured my local library shelves for nonfiction books about fantastic universes and found mostly hagiographies of pop filmmakers, dusty histories of Golden Age science fiction, and the occasional behind-the-scenes book. For serious pop culture analysis, I had The Parables of Peanuts and that was about it. From this perspective, it was gratifying to find that Phillips makes the occasional historical reference but isn’t bound by the past. Her emphasis is on the texts she’s encountered, and how they’ve been relevant to her life in real time.

Phillips also takes a dynamic approach to the creator-fan relationship, reflecting the potentially fraught realities of an era when J.K. Rowling can tweet retcons at whim even as her readers share their own takes on the Harry Potter canon. (Phillips and her friends, she writes, won’t entertain the Fantastic Beasts prequels as canon, nor do they credit “the Epilogue That Will Not Be Named.”) Phillips also addresses Rowling’s transphobia, about which Harry Potter’s creator is so resolutely unapologetic that any reference to her formerly ubiquitous fantasy universe is now potentially fraught.

The Nerd author narrates the audiobook herself with a confident, deliberate cadence. It’s gratifying to hear the text in her own voice, but the linear experience of an audiobook can present challenges for listeners who dip in and out. Nerd is a great listen if you have long, uninterrupted stretches of time to spend with it, but in shorter bursts, without the ability to readily flip pages, it can be challenging to hold all the threads of Phillips’s carefully crafted arguments.

Nerd constitutes a testament to the real-world power of imagined universes, and for the importance of remaining critically engaged even while meeting these stories on their own terms. “These worlds only belong to children, we’ve been told for so long, with the understanding that imagination, hope, and dreams may only survive in the innocence of childhood,” Phillips writes, “and yet, if the multiverse can teach us anything, it’s that reality is what we make it. The possibilities are endless.”

It’s a stirring sentiment, and I don’t just say that because I’m wearing a Baby Yoda onesie.

Harry Potter Verse: Fantastic Banes & Where to Find Them

Exactly what it says on the tin. Magnus is a Wizard living in Brooklyn during the 1920s. This verse currently has a closer association to the events of Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them than it does the events of the Harry Potter novels, but all interactions pull from that lore. Originally a student of Mahoutokoro School of Magic, the death of Magnus’s mother during his first year of studies led him to transfer as an exchange student to Castelobruxo in Brazil. He moved to New York after completing his studies and works as an alchemist and a contract obliviator for the MACUSA (billed by the hour, thank you very much)

Crime Lords AU: The Downworld Syndicate

In this magicless alternate world, New York City is run by a number of competing (or collaborative) crime syndicates. There is the ‘Downworld Syndicate’ with allied Factions: The Warlocks, The Vampires, and The Werewolves. There is also ‘The Clave,’ a crime family with known ‘Institutes’ established in most major cities. Their Shadowhunter ranks have infiltrated everything from the arms trade within the city, to the police force, to political powers in office. But they recently experienced a coup from within, and a faction known as ‘The Circle’ has broken away from the York City Institute, threatening to take control of the city and install a new regime. 

Magnus Bane is a High-Ranking distributor in the Warlock Faction of the Downworld Syndicate. He works as a crafter of custom, luxury ‘Potions’ (i.e. drugs) for elite clientele, and specializes in maintaining ‘Glamours’ (legitimate businesses that serve as fronts for the laundering of money and drugs). He is known as the Harbinger of Debauchery, by some. 

Bane’s faction, as well as the other allied factions of the Downworld Syndicate, are now at risk due to the upheaval caused by ‘The Circle.’ It would make sense to partner with The Institute to ensure order is maintained within the city. But a question remains... can ‘The Clave’ be trusted?

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Verse: Seed of Wonder; Son of Demons

Magnus Bane in the world of B:TVS. Magnus is a Warlock of unknown heritage, with a particular talent for Glamour and Conjuration Witchcraft. He is deceptively long-lived, though whether that is due to his Glamouring skills or something else, is unknown. In the past, he had a passing... acquaintanceship... with Ethan Rayne.

Saw you were offering stories for people who donate to Kenzie's dog surgery. Mysenia didn't list what fandoms you write for. What's on the table for people to choose from?

For the followers who aren’t aware, @mysenia‘s super adorable Kenzie needs TPLO surgery for an injury she sustained. My family and I are super huge animal lovers (we have five dogs alone), and I figured that offering my writing to help with the fundraising is the least that I could do. :) The current list of authors who are willing to write to help with fundraising can be found over here, but as a fyi: it looks like more people are volunteering to help all of the time!
