Pitch trace of the utterance "it's not that I", showing a peak on the negation not. A funky way of illustrating pitch? Pitch before Praat?
Labov, William & David Fanshel. 1977. Therapeutic discourse: psychotherapy as conversation. New York: Academic Press. [Figure 3, page 45]
A footnote explains the visualization this way: "Spectral Dynamics Real-Time Analyzer 301C with output displayed on a Tektronix 611 storage oscilloscope. The analyzer synthesizes 500 filters every 50 milliseconds over a variety of frequency ranges; the analysis can be terminated after any given number of filters and a new sweep started immediately. The pitch contour display used throughout this volume is made with a frequ ency range of 5,000 Hz. Each filter has a nominal bandwidth of 10 Hz and an effective bandwidth of 15 Hz. The sweep is terminated after the first 110 filters, so that a spectrum is generated every 11 milliseconds. The display on the oscilloscope is logarithmic and cuts off at 54 db below maximum. High-pass filtering at 12 db per octave begins at 3,000 Hz, and, in addition, the roll-off of the Nagra IV-S tape recorder - LS + FA - is used. Volume is then adjusted so that only the peaks of the wave forms are visible, thus tracing the path of the fundamental frequency without the interference of other signals"

Treasures from the Sea @yychuls Alla Prima study 6 was one shell of a time 🐚 🤣 From the collection of shells I went with the fan shell first because of it’s simplistic shape, and I had to try the Seahorse within the time limit as well. Have always enjoyed the convexities and concavities of their bodies. After weeks of graining into my head the 5 stroke palette rule on repeat, I think I’m slightly getting used to conducting these studies. All in all I enjoy the results of these works, problem solving and conducting quickly and efficiently helps to make a better more cognoscente painter. 👩🏼‍🎨 👨🏽‍🎨 Next week should be a blast, with PrimaryProwess 🟨🟥🟦 Hope you all will tune in, thanks for taking a look, have a splendid night cap! #deltondemarest #allaprimapainting #allaprima #30minutepainting #fanshell #seahorse #treasuresfromthesea #oilpainting #oil #allaprimapocalypse #fatoverlean (at Delton Demarest Arts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpEZC9PsGZ3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

losing my entire mind at this paragraph from Beyond blood brothers: queer Bruce Springsteen by Rosalie Zdzienicka Fanshel. im so emotional
[Image text: At 6'4" and of sturdy build, he towers over Bruce and the other members of E Sreet, who are all several inches shorter (Springsteen is 5' 8"). Clemons was also older than the rest of the band, and it is no small matter that he was African American in a group that is otherwise mostly Jewish and Italian American. Wielding his powerful (and phallic) saxophone, the Big Man is the only one who ever gets to be a bit more 'boss' than the Boss. Throughout his performances Springsteen supplicates himself to Clemons: he variously leans into him for comfort, prances around him like a puppy in love, and elevates him with introductory titles such as 'King of the World' and 'Master of the Universe', whose name should not even need to be pronounced. Bruce worships Clarence and invites the audience to do the same. Photographs from concerts throughout the early 1970s show the same unabashed gaze of adoration that was so carefully constructed on the cover of Born to Run. /end ID.]

Unguloids
Similar to the Molingua, the Unguloids lack front arms and have a pouch in their jaws to grind food. But this group is an even more advanced lineage, with multiple shapes of teeth within this pouch to better process various plants. They have two walking toes with hardened hooves on each.
Unipalas
Tumblr media
Pictured: the two-stripe Unipala, a very common species in the forests of Axane.
Like the Gallopes of Faon, these are small, fast herbivores, who rear up on four legs to dash away from predators. These are likely the most primitive Unguloid, as they lack hooves on the first pair of legs. Species live across the plains and forests of Ejoa, Axane and Amki, and are hunted by many predators. Feeding on grasses and low-lying undergrowth, they are like little lawnmowers maintaining the land. Some species are highly social, living in herds numbering in the hundreds, and others prefer smaller groups of five to ten individuals.
Springlegs
Tumblr media
Pictured: the Ejoan Highland Springleg, which lives in the far northern mountains of Ejoa.
Highly adapted to life in the rugged mountains of Ejoa and Axane, these animals can leap incredible distances and climb nearly vertical cliffs. Some species can also be found in rocky desert regions and highland forests. They are even found beyond the tree line in extreme alpine regions, and have a thick bristle coat to ward off the cold, as well as unique, sloped shells so snow will slide off them. They are not picky eaters and will feed on any plant material they can find in these barren ecosystems.
Domeheads
Tumblr media
Pictured: the Deadland Domehead, native to the incredibly arid “Deadlands” of western Ejoa.
One of the only large herbivores in the high deserts of Ejoa, Domeheads store fat in a hump on the tops of their heads. This allows them to go long periods of time without food as they migrate from oasis to oasis, avoiding packs of dune vultures and Wyverns. These strange animals are considered semi-domesticated and were used as beasts of burden by desert communities, and continue to be kept by farmers in arid regions.
Fanshells
Tumblr media
Pictured: the King Fanshell, the most iconic species, which is native to the Great Savanna of Ejoa.
A very specious group, Fanshells include domesticated animals such as the Noro as well as savanna and forest dwelling wild species across Ejoa, Axane and Amki. Although not all of them have the spectacular shells of the large open plains species, all of them do have well-armored bodies to protect themselves from predators. Fanshells are very social and most live in large herds.
Buckfangs
Tumblr media
Pictured: the spitting buckfang, which is found in the rich temperate rainforest around the Ever Reaching River of Axane.
With saber-tooth projections on their beak, these are very ferocious-looking herbivores. The fangs are not used for food processing, and instead are used for conflict between their own kind. They live in complex harems with one large alpha protecting a group of smaller mates and their offspring. These alphas are very aggressive to any perceived threats. When one of the mates grows large enough, they will either compete for the title of the alpha or be driven out to start their own harem. Some (like the above species) also mark their territory with a strong-smelling liquid produced in a gland on the roof of their mouth. Living in the forests of Axane and southern Ejoa, they are generalist herbivores who will eat anything within their reach.
Tanks:
Tumblr media
Pictured: the ten-ridged tank, found on the plains of southern Axane.
The Tanks are so named for their massive sizes and well-armored shells. Most predators would never attempt to kill an adult Tank. Living across the savannas of Ejoa and Axane, these huge herbivores eat grasses and shrubs. Unlike many Unguloids, adults are solitary creatures aside from mating and rearing offspring. They are very territorial and will sometimes fight to the death to protect their land.

"[O]fficials warn that powerful storms, a shortage of lifeguards and stubborn tourists are fueling another surge in ocean deaths. Since the start of the year, the National Weather Service has recorded 60 drownings at beaches across the United States, a spate of tragedies on pace to potentially challenge a modern-day record.
...
Nationwide, 55 of the 60 drowning deaths this year have been tied to rip currents, powerful channels of water that can quickly pull a swimmer out to sea.
...
Since Memorial Day weekend, deaths from rip currents have also occurred in Pawleys Island, S.C., Lea Island, N.C., Fanshell Beach, Calif., and separate incidents in Sandy Hook and Avon-by-the-Sea in New Jersey, according to NOAA data. Rip currents also occur on the Great Lakes, and a 7-year-old boy from Chicago died in Lake Michigan on June 15."

17-Mile Drive is a visual stunner
17-Mile Drive is a visual stunner
If you find yourself in Monterey or Carmel, don’t hesitate to add the 17-Mile Drive in Pebble Beach to your must-see and do list. This scenic loop is one of the most picturesque drives in the country and can be accessed at several entrances in Carmel and Pacific Grove, as well as from the main highway off of California State Route 1. You’ll pay a fee (per car) to drive it, but it’s well worth it,…

Inmania
The Inmania include the largest land predators on Varin, able to hunt almost any animal aside from the massive Titanipods. Most are ambush predators, stalking their prey from dense forests or undergrowth before tackling and killing them with a well-aimed stab of their proboscis.
Prowlers:
Tumblr media
Pictured: the painted prowler, found in the steppe forests of midland Axane.
In the forests of Amki, Ejoa and Axane lurk the largest land predators of Varin. However, these disproportionate-looking animals behave more like bears, feeding on fruit and plants with meat making up only a portion of their diet. This perhaps explains their reduced head and neck, as they do not need as much muscle to launch their proboscis. But this lack of strength does not make them any less dangerous, and they have been observed hunting and taking down large prey with their massive arms. They can also be quite territorial and should never be approached in the wild due to their unpredictable nature.
Sabers:
Tumblr media
Pictured: the ringneck, found across the eastern plains of Axane.
Rivaled only by the Faon Jagpanthers in speed, Sabers are one of the fastest animals on Varin, able to chase down even the quickest Unipalas. Living on the plains of Ejoa and Axane, they are fairly specialized for open terrain and smaller, quick prey. Although these lithe predators typically hunt alone, they live in small groups and will occasionally share food. While they are ferocious hunters, they are preyed upon by their larger relatives such as Raptors and Pincherjaws, and as such are quite skittish. Due to their specialized lifestyle, they are considered to be at risk of endangerment and their populations are closely monitored by scientists.
Raptors:
Tumblr media
Pictured: the high-crested raptor, one of the largest species, which is native to the Great Savanna of Ejoa.
These large ambush predators inhabit the plains and forests of Ejoa, Axane and Amki. A diverse group, they include large savanna species which take on Tanks and Fanshells, as well as sleek jungle-dwellers that feed on Labyrinth Ghouls and Acualatas. Aside from the omnivorous Prowlers, these are the largest predators on Varin, and most species are considered apex carnivores in their ecosystems. The only animals that would take on large Raptors are packs of Moon Dogs, which occasionally come into competition for territory or prey.
Pincherjaws:
Tumblr media
Pictured: the Southlands Pincherjaw, which is found on the lush plains of far southern Ejoa.
An unusual group of animals, these predators found in the plains and woodlands of Ejoa and Axane have hardened, sharp tips to their mouth sheaths, allowing them to actually tear flesh rather than simply dissolve and slurp it. This makes them very effective scavengers, as they can grab a chunk of meat and dash off before the larger predator notices. While they are known for being scavengers, they are also active pack hunters who take down both large and medium-sized prey.
DiamondEyes:
Tumblr media
Pictured: the little treecat, found in the dense tropical jungles of the White River delta in Ejoa.
The smallest of the Inmania, these slender animals live in the trees of the Ejoan jungles, feeding on Leafies, small Acualatas, and arboreal Wyrms. Their name comes from their strange pupils, which are diamond-shaped. The reasons they have evolved these strange eyes, unlike anything else on Varin, is yet unknown, reminding us that there are still many mysteries to be solved in this alien world.
