The dates are in for Fandom Trumps Hate 2024!!! For those of you who don't know, this is an auction to support non-profits. You can participate by donating fanworks, fanlabor, or by bidding in the auction. I am hoping we get some more Justified participation this year!
Creator Sign-ups: February 5th-19th Browsing: February 29th-March 5th Bidding: March 5th-9th
If you need more info, head on over to their FAQ https://fandomtrumpshate.tumblr.com/FAQ
FTH 2024 Auction Calendar
We blinked, and it's 2024, and our EIGHTH year of running this auction. 2024 has all the same problems as last year but more — but we also have a lot to be hopeful about, and a lot of good projects worth supporting and fighting for.
You can look at this page (also linked in our header) for the list of this year's supported nonprofit organizations. We'll be posting more detailed profiles of each of them in the coming weeks. Below is the full calendar for this year's auction.
February 5th: creator signups open
February 19th: creator signups close
February 29th: browsing period begins
March 5th: bidding opens
March 9th: bidding closes
March 16th: proof of high bid donations due
March 21st: proof of 2nd chance donations due
Back in 2021, as we were pulling together the fifth FTH auction, we joked together behind the scenes about how great it felt that the name of our auction was no longer quite as on-the-nose as it had been in our first few years. But it's 2024, and in all likelihood 45 will be back on the ballot: just one of the many sobering and scary things we're facing down this year.
But for the past seven years, we've had the privilege of watching thousands of fans -- yes, literally thousands -- dedicate their time and money and energy to the twin projects of sending support to some amazing organizations while building and strengthening community ties within fandom. Now, more than ever, that kind of community-building is essential.
We hope you'll join us, and join one another, in sending much-needed financial support to these amazing organizations and in putting more joy and beauty out into the world in the form of fanworks. These are dark times, but when we join together we can make them a little brighter.
(What is Fandom Trumps Hate anyway? Read our FAQ.)

Being from the US South should be a fanlabor specialty, like being able to Britpick. We also are a distinct culture that mainstream American culture cannot write without descending into cliches. I would gladly South-pick a fic for you, if I was actually in a fandom where this was applicable.

typed up a big angry paragraph and then deleted it xx anyway if you think that the problem of underpaid fanlabor is coming from Zines and not actual companies paying passionate young artists pennies for their designs then you’re insane. that person who made the big thread about how zine mods are somehow “making a living off of unpaid labor from bi/poc artists” literally has no idea what theyre talking about. thats all.
#nobody is gentrifying zines you can still go print out your chapbook on copy paper and sell it as a zine and people will buy it#btw you're not allowed to complain about how zines Used To Be Different unless youre attending your local zinefest and buying shit there#people are still out there making the stuff you Think has been gentrified away#its still there idiot !

ladies choice: females and fanfic
We've all read them - whether we meant to or not. Maybe you were searching for something and a link you find in the search engine catches your eye - then suddenly you're wondering why someone named Kaitlyyynnne is dating all of the guys from One Direction. But there's a lare possibility that you were looking for those links on purpose because, well, you'd also like to dating all of those guys. There's more than the internet's fair share of women rewriting their favorite stories to fit themselves into or plainly, just writing stories to insert themselves into the lives of their most cherished celebrity crushes or fictionalized characters. But why are they so often by women, for women?
In his paper, "Star Trek rerun, reread, rewritten: Fan writing as textual poaching. Critical Studies in Mass Communication" - while discussing the culture 'fandom' itself, Henry Jenkins touches on the idea that fanfiction is often seen as a 'women's activity'. He states:
"Fan writing is an almost exclusively feminine response to mass media texts. Men actively participate in a wide range of fan-related activities, notably interactive games and conference planning committees, roles consistent with patriarchal norms that typically relegate combat— even combat fantasies—and organizational authority to the masculine sphere. Fan writers and fanzine readers, however, are almost always female. Camille Bacon-Smith (1986) has estimated that more than 90% of all fan writers are female. [.......] "
But the question here is; why are women predominately active in the fan-fiction community?
In the excerpt below, you see Jenkins' pulls from Bleichs' research to point out that due to that fact that women feel marginalized in their choice of story content and narrative much less than males do - they are more apt to write their own selves and into these stories that they enjoy. His theory is that because of the lack of boundaries and more imaginative allowances in fanfiction - women, feel more free to explore and do so - as they don't often feel as though they are represented as well in normative writings.
"Research suggests that men and women have been socialized to read for different purposes and in different ways. David Bleich (1986) asked a mixed group of CSMC college students to comment, in a free association fashion, on a body of canonized literary works. His analysis of their responses suggests that men focused primarily on narrative organization and authorial intent while women devoted more energy to reconstructing the textual world and understanding the characters. He writes, "Women enter the world ofthe novel, take it as something 'there' for that purpose; men see the novel as aresult of someone's action and construe its meaning or logic in those terms" (p.239). In a related study, Bleich asked some 120 University of Indiana freshmen [..] Bleich finds that women were more willing to enjoy free play with the story content, making inferences about character relationships that took them well beyond the information explicitly contained within the text. Such data strongly suggest that the practice of fan writing, the compulsion to expand speculations about characters and story events beyond textual boundaries, draws heavily upon the types of interpretive strategies more common to the feminine than to the masculine. "
I feel as though another set of authors that we've heard from this semester, Turks and Johnson supports Jenkins idea. In their piece, "Toward an Ecology of Vidding" an essay focusing on "vidding" culture - while not specifically making a fannish remark towards gender - they do iterate the idea that the reason that people vid and write fanfic is to feel that their ideas are represented and to have both input (participation) and feel a sense of belonging within the fandom; though in a much more visual way.
“One of the central points of interest within fan studies has been the idea that media fans were among the earliest spectators to shift from passively consuming or even actively reading media texts to creating works of their own that extend or comment on those texts. “
In conclusion, though both directly and indirectly, Jenkins, Turk, and Johnson all argue that the culture of fan vids and fics are to help those who are marginalized to connect to the community - either by giving sharing their dreams, opinions, and/or review. And all can agree that that women are the most marginalized in popular fannish culture, and therefore - create their own versions.
