Two weeks had passed in the blink of an eye as I studied the patterns and embellishments that went into the makings of a wedding dress.

Today, I arrived at the studio at our usual stipulated time. However, Lan Yu wasn't working on a design as she usually did around this time. Instead, she was seated at the reception area.

She was seated across from a girl whose face was alight with immeasurable delight.

From my experience after spending a period here, I figured that she was a customer who'd come to get a customized wedding dress done. And thus, that was why the girl was reminiscing about her relationship: to determine just what sort of wedding dress she'd like to go for.

Upon receiving the green light from both Lan Yu and her customer, I seated myself at a corner of the sofa and sat in on this meeting. The girl continued telling her story.

Customer: My husband and I are from different countries. We met during an overseas exchange program.

Customer: Our relationship isn't only based on the sweetness of a passionate couple, but we'd also found that we shared the same philosophies in life.

Customer: But the sad part of it all was how short the exchange program lasted. My husband returned to his country shortly after.

Customer: Due to academic and career reasons, both of us spent an extended time apart in different places of the world.

Customer: We could only communicate through calls and video calls every day.

A wry smile played at the side of her lips.

Customer: The closest person to me, most treasured; a thousand a miles away.

Customer: And due to the time difference between us, neither of us can provide care nor help in time if any emergencies were to occur.

Customer: That period of time in my life was something excruciatingly long.

Customer: So long and painful, that I even started to wonder if these feelings that I’d felt so acutely during my studies abroad were something worth waiting for.

She sounded a little exasperated at that, as if she’d travelled back into the past into her period of unsure hesitance. Hearing her describe it as such, I couldn’t help but worry.

Customer: But, while I was still hesitating, my husband was able to convey to me through his actions that this love of ours was worth the sacrifices.

Customer: He made a great sacrifice by giving up his career overseas and coming to my country.

Customer: To start over, a life anew, on this piece of land where he had nothing to his name.

Customer: I’m worried that he’ll come to regret this one day, but he told me...

Customer: “Love always comes with sacrifice. Concessions will always have to be made, be it personality-wise, or lifestyle-wise.”

Customer: “Since this is how it is, why don’t I just make this sacrifice instead?”

Then, she lowered her head as warmth crept into her lonely smile.

Lan Yu had been listening intently and scribbling down notes throughout the entire process, surprise, joy, and sorrow flickering across her features as the story went on.

The story finally reached its happy ending and the girl got up to leave. Lan Yu saw her out and pressed the stop button on the dictaphone that had been set on the table.

Noticing my doubtful look, she started patiently explaining everything.

Lan Yu: When making a wedding dress, we at LAN-YU, hope to design a masterpiece unique to the customer’s own journey of love.

Lan Yu: This dictaphone is just in case we miss out on anything in the notes we pen down during the process.

Lan Yu: It can also help us adhere and familiarize ourselves with what our customers are looking for.

Lan Yu: Of course, we do seek their permission before starting the recording. My job after this is to sort through these recordings.

I glanced at the dictaphone, only to realize that the previous recording was 5 hours long.

Which meant that sorting through this was actually a pretty huge undertaking. Then, Lan Yu covered her mouth as she gave a small yawn.

I couldn't help but worry after noticing the slight shadow beneath her eyes.

MC: Rough night?

Lan Yu took a sip of the coffee that had been on the table. Then, she spoke as lightly as ever.

Lan Yu: I blame the Goddess of Inspiration who paid me a visit in the dead of the night.

Lan Yu: I was afraid that I'd forget some of the things I thought up if I left it for the next day, so I went and recorded it all down immediately after.

Lan Yu: But I never thought I'd take that long to wrap everything up. The sun was already up by the time I was done.

I related to her on an abysmal level.

As a Designer myself, I too, had days where I'd stay up the entire night. Although doing this would enable us to instantly materialize the inspiration that struck us at odd hours, our body would inevitably suffer the consequences the next day.

MC: You've already been up for an entire day. Go rest!

MC: I can sort this recording out and organize them into comprehensible notes.

Lan Yu patted me on the shoulder with a smile, shaking her head.

Lan Yu: I appreciate your kindness, but I’ll be fine doing it alone.

Lan Yu: Although it’s no doubt a cumbersome task, it is something of a necessary evil for me.

Lan Yu: It is the little details that I discover from processing these materials that give me the nudges I need in the right direction.

Lan Yu: But I think I’ll take a nap first if I’m to do this right.

I watched as she whipped out her phone and set an alarm for half an hour later before setting another two, each 3 minutes apart.

Lan Yu: One alarm doesn’t really do the job. If I fail to wake, can I trouble you to...

MC: Sure.

MC: I’ll be sure to wake you up if your alarms don’t.

Lan Yu: Okay, thanks.

Lan Yu fell asleep on the sofa almost instantly.

The studio was very quiet in the afternoon. I leant against the table, doodling patterns as they surfaced in my mind.
