Fever Dream - Part 3
Part 1 - Part 2
It only took until page 12 to have these boys finally interact! These have been some of my favorite pages so far, moping Shouto, cinnamon roll Izuku, and feral Kacchan are incredibly fun to draw. The next update will be short, but it's half finished (I worked a lot on this over summer, and I'm hoping for some crash-and-dash art time once the holidays hit).

Dabi and Child Reader
WARNING- mentions of abuse
Summary- You're a 6 year old kid who had ran into Dabi and had to convince him to let you stay with him. You had ran away from home trying to escape your abusive dad. Dabi does end up letting you stay with him not caring what shigaraki says.
Content- Dabi and kid reader, Abused kid, father figure, seeing things, Creepy moments, cute moments, attachment, messing with Tomura.
Note- Sorry it took me a long while to get to the Dabi one. I was really thinking of how to do this one and I finally have it. I try to put a lot of thought into my stories so if it takes a long time for me to post these that's why. Plus I do sometimes feel my stories aren't as good as others stories which makes me feel like I don't wanna write but I hope you guys enjoy this one :).

YOU'RE SAFE NOW
Small light foot steps could heard faintly, running from what had happened at home. Bruises painted on the skin as tears ran down the face, falling from the eyes like soft rain when a figure could be seen walking by through the clouded vision. You picked up your pace as best you could running into the figure and grabbing hold of their leg in sheer fear and panic. You didn't bother looking up at who you had grabbed onto, instead just gripping onto the persons leg tightly like a scared animal being chased by a predator. The man looked down at you unpleased by the whole thing, not enjoying the way your just clutched to him. He gave a stern look at you and the way you just clung to his leg out of nowhere. Despite his annoyance he didn't push you away or anything and just let out an irritated sigh feeling uninterested in the situation.
"The hell are you doing, running into people like that?.... Get off"
He said with a pretty stern tone in his voice but, You didn't budge at all. You were just scared and hurt, wanting someone to help you and him being the first person you ran into, you were hoping he would at least help in some form of way.
"Please help me"
You muttered through your whimpers but his annoyance had done nothing but increase a bit at your plea for help. He really had no interest in helping you at all, not in the slightest was he interested since to him you were just some rat that ran and clung to him. His gaze soon lands on the dark bruises that were visible on your arms, making him raise a brow.
"Why the hell should I? and what are you running from huh?"
He asked in a harsh, uncaring tone. He was tempted to just turn you to ash right then and there, especially since you weren't letting go of him at all after he already told you to get off of him though a part of him was curious about what the hell you were running from.
"Well are you gonna answer any of my questions or just keep clinging to me like a damn leech?"
"M-my father"
You finally muttered out answering one of his questions finally before looking up at who you had clung to only to be met with his rough appearance of badly scared flesh on his face that ran down to his chest, and hands which had frightened you pretty badly making you let go of his leg instantly and back up away from him making him let out an annoyed exhale.
"Right.... and why is ole daddy dearest chasing you down kid?"
He asked with a bit of a calmer tone to his voice. No doubt he was still just a tad bit annoyed but something about this situation he couldn't find himself to ignore it. You looked very young and he couldn't help but have a slight idea of what's going on. He continued to observe your reaction to him as you just continued staring at him, You were just so unsure of what to think of him right now torn between wanting help or just running from him but, You just felt to horrified to, almost as if fear just made your body lock in place. He watched you for a couple of seconds tilting his head just slightly as he waited for you to answer his damn question already.
"You know you can't just stay here forever kid. You gonna tell me what's going on, or just keep staring at me like I'm some abomination?"
You couldn't help it, you were just so damn scared and hesitant to say something to this man. You didn't know what to do at all, you're young and terrified, and you don't know if you can actually trust him or not. After a moment you slowly took a step towards him holding your small hands close to your chest not taking your wet eyes off of him. You really wanted to trust him but you just feel so unsure if it's safe to trust him or not. He didn't make a single move as he watched you step forward towards him. He could really see the fear and uncertainty in your eyes with a faint hint of slight trust fading in as well. He didn't know what possessed him to do this but he knelt down so he was more level with you trying to make himself less threatening for you.
"Look kid, I'm not gonna hurt you alright. Just tell me what's going on alright?"
His voice was a bit softer now, an unexpected gentleness to it as he spoke to you. damn why was he acting this way?, did he actually care for this kid he just met? no way right?.
"Can I trust you?"
You asked, keeping your distance still, being a very cautious and untrusting of this man. His blue eyes studied you intently as you had asked him that. Trust wasn't something he had in others or was even remotely used to. He pondered for a moment before finally responding to you.
"I can't force you to trust me, kid. I'm no saint nor am I a damn hero either, but I'm not gonna hurt you. You can take my word on that or not, it's your decision."
He spoke in a firm voice. You started to hesitate again, taking a moment before walking up to him very slowly, still holding your small hands to your chest. He watched as you slowly started to approach him cautiously, noticing all the hesitation that's there in your movements. He remained in his kneeling position, not making any form of movements so he doesn't frighten you and make you move away from him again with patience in his eyes.
"It's gonna be alright, just talk to me kid, I can't help you if you don't talk to me"
You soon stop still keeping some distance between you two before you took a glance behind you, hoping you don't see your father walking up. He took notice of the way you had looked behind you, following your gaze for a split second before shifting his attention back at you.
"Your old man ain't here alright. Is he the one who gave you those bruises?"
You turned your attention before looking down at the ground, giving him a slight nod as you brought your arm up, wiping your tears from your watery eyes. He could feel a pang of anger start to boil up a bit as you confirmed it to him that you were being abused by your father. He knew what that was like all to well.
"Can I stay with you?...... I don't wanna go back"
You mumbled out. You still didn't 100 percent trust him but to you anything was better then going back to your dad and he wasn't being threatening to you. You're just more scared to go back home at this point and if he truly is willing to help you, you'd gladly go with him if it meant getting away from your father. He was a bit taken off guard by your sudden question though, He wouldn't exactly be the best caregiver for you but could he send you back to your abusive ass dad?. He really wasn't expecting this especially from a kid he just met 30 minutes ago. He started contemplating what to do and say in this situation he is now in. Should he let you?, it would be up to Tomura in letting you stay with them though he's not actually gonna care what Tomura says and if anything he could easily talk Tomura into letting you live with them for a bit since he didn't really wanna be that cold towards you. He took a deep breath before sighing a bit as he looked at you.
"You really want to stay with me?, You don't even know who I am kiddo, You sure about that?"
"Please I don't wanna go back"
You begged him. He could hear the desperation in your voice as you pleaded. He knew you really didn't wanna go back home, that much was clear and he himself didn't wanna send you back to that shitbag of a father either. A part of him felt compelled to help despite his usually cold hearted demeaner.
"Alright alright, You can stay with me for now but you gotta tell your name at least, can't keep calling you just kid"
"Y/N"
"Y/N huh?, That's a nice name. How old are you anyway?"
"Six"
"Six years old huh?, You're just a little pipsqueak then"
His last comment seemed to make you smile just a little bit as you dried your damp eyes again. Seeing the faint smile appear on your little face made something stir within him, cracking a small, almost imperceptible smile himself.
"There we go, now that's more like it. Looks like I got myself a pipsqueak to take care of then huh?"
You looked up at him as he stood up, holding out his hand to you for you to take.
"you're gonna let me stay?"
"Yeah, you can stay with me pipsqueak. Just know that I'm not going to be some all loving caregiver or some crap like that. I'm not some warm, fuzzy type alright. But you can stay with me as long as you behave."
You nodded before taking a hold of his hand, wrapping his fingers around your tiny hand gently as you both started walking, following right by his side when you look up at him.
"What's your name?"
"The names Dabi"
He answered, stealing a glance down at you as he did still feel a bit surprised by this whole situation he had gotten himself into. You both walked for a bit before coming up to this strange hideout. Dabi opened the door and let you enter first with him following right behind you. You stayed close to his side as you both walked into the bar, Toga was sitting by Tomura as Kurogiri poured a drink for him, Compress and twice were standing in the corner of the room chatting. Toga felt a bit excited when she seen Dabi walk in with you as she nudged shigaraki.
"Hehe Dabi has a child"
Tomura nearly spit his drink out when Toga said that, turning around in his seat to face Dabi and his red eyes glared at you. You got behind Dabi and held onto his jacket tightly.
"WHAT!?"
Shigaraki questioned clearly not happy with Dabi bringing some rat into his hideout. Dabi just shrugged at his question not really giving a damn if Shigaraki was happy about it or not. Shigaraki couldn't believe that Dabi of all people brought a child back with him.
"Just found her running from some old bastard, She was all alone so I let her stay with me for now. What of it?"
Tomura grumbled something under his breath as he kept his glare on Dabi while he raised a brow a bit. You watched the whole thing play out from behind Dabi a bit scared of everyone in the room.
"So you kidnapped some random kid off the street and brought them HERE!? and deciding to keep her like some form of animal or something?. You aren't the type to care for some kid Dabi."
Dabi crossed his arms as Shigaraki questioned him more on his actions even if he was right, he wasn't the caregiver type and that was obvious. But he couldn't shake the feeling he had when he came across you running into him.
"hm... maybe I'm just feeling charitable?"
Dabi said in a smartass way.
"Besides she's harmless, if anything I can handle the kid just fine"
Shigaraki clearly wasn't buying it. He knew Dabi a little to well to call his bullshit out instantly in front of everyone in the room.
"Yeah, sure, you're feeling 'Charitable' my ass, cause that's believable. What's the kids name anyway?"
Tomura asked still annoyed at Dabi right now and might be for awhile. Dabi could still feel shigaraki's skepticism but just laughed a little at him.
"the kids name is Y/N."
Dabi replied as he glanced down you as you stepped out from behind him still staying close to him and keeping your grip as tight as you can onto his jacket. Toga squealed a bit and looked at shigaraki.
"Let her stay please please please Tomura"
Toga said a bit loud, begging Tomura to let you stay with them. You were just so cute and Toga could use something to do and with you here Toga could have someone to play with and bring a little bit of fun in the hideout. Tomura pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance. First Dabi and now Toga, this is just great he thought to himself.
"ugh... fine she can stay, but if anything, and I mean anything goes wrong I'm blaming both you and Mr. charitable over there for it"
"YAAYYYYY"
Toga shouted excitedly as Shigaraki finally agreed to let the kid stay with them.
"Yeah yeah I'll take care of her. Toga you're on babysitting duty though when I'm not here, so don't annoy me with complaining"
Dabi stated a bit firmly. Toga was excited to have that duty, joy showing in her eyes as she bounced a bit in her chair. Tomura had taken a drink knowing damn well Toga might start complaining one of these days about having to babysit when Dabi is gone which is usually quite often. Toga goes up to you and dabi looking down at you with a big smile on her face, showing her fangs to you as she did so. You hid more behind Dabi not trusting any of them and you scooting more behind Dabi made Togas smile fade a tad bit.
"Aww it's okay kiddo, I'm Toga"
She said holding her hand out to you but you didn't budge at all. Dabi took a glance at your reaction to Toga and honestly he couldn't exactly blame you for still being a bit frightened since their all not exactly the most welcoming bunch there is.
"Don't take it personally Toga, Not everyone can warm up to you that easily"
Toga gave Dabi a slight glare as he said that before straightening herself up a bit and crossing her arms over her chest.
"Oh shut up Dabi"
She grumbled out as Compress decided to try his luck to see how you'd react to him. He could probably show some of his magic tricks to cheer you up a bit. As he got close Toga went and sat back down placing her chin on her hand as she watched how you'd react to compress. He kneeled down so he was a bit more eye level with you, Dabi keeping watch over the whole thing as Compress spoke up.
"Hey kiddo my name is Atsuhrio Sako but you may call me Compress. You may not worry for nobody here is going to hurt you"
He reassured you and you slowly started to step out a tiny bit.
"Promise?"
You muttered out being partly behind Dabi as you watched Compress closely.
"I promise. None of us here would ever dream of laying a finger on you my dear"
"Shggy might"
Toga chimed in after Compress with a giggle following behind her comment which made Tomura look at her with a slight death glare.
"Oh ha ha very funny Toga"
He said with sarcasm in his tone. Compress chuckled a bit but was also hoping that didn't make you scared of Tomura. Compress reached into his pocket and pulled out some marbles for you to see hoping that will gain your trust some more.
"Do you want to some magic tricks?"
He asked you. You shrugged a bit not sure since you've never seen magic before.
"Well you're in for a real treat kiddo, let me show you something"
Compress held out his hand to you that had the marbles in it and let you see them for a moment until he closed his hand and ran his other over the one that held the marbles in it before opening it to show that the marbles had disappeared. You tilted your head a little feeling a bit confused where the marbles had gone. You finally stepped out from behind Dabi who kept watching the whole interaction as you took hold of compresses hand as if looking for the marbles soon turning your gaze back to him. Compress started to chuckle at your reaction and very much happy that you came out.
"Ahh now here did the marbles go, huh?. Did they disappear?"
You look back down at his hand then back at him.
"Now let me show you this"
Compress gently took your hand and placed his over your palm before moving his hand away revealing the marbles that were now in your hand. You looked at the marbles, picking one up and looking at it before looking at compress.
"Pretty cool huh?, that's the power of magic for you"
He said before you handed back the marbles. You wanted to see more but you were getting tired, rubbing your eyes as a yawn left your mouth. You turned up at Dabi and lifted your hands up to him wanting him to pick you up and take you to bed. Magne thought it was so precious how you were with Dabi and found you to be so adorable. Dabi looked off to the side for a moment not really wanting to pick you up or anything and stead just took your hand.
"Tired huh?. Let's go then, you can sleep in my room I suppose"
As he walked you to his room his gaze stayed as nonchalant as usual. He opened his door and let you go inside, following right behind you. You let go of his hand and made your way to his bed and climbed up onto it, a yawn escaping from you again as you laid down. Dabi on the other hand just went over to a chair that sat in his room taking a seat by the bed as he waited for you to fall asleep. It really didn't take you very long to fall asleep due to how tired you were, especially after all the running you did tonight. Dabi noticed how fast you fell asleep and decided to finally leave the room to go back into the bar with the others. After about an hour or so later crying could be heard from his room and Toga snickered a little as she looked at Dabi. Tomura however felt like he wanted to just drop his head down on the bar in a bit of annoyance at the crying.
"Seems it's your call Dabi"
Toga responded as Dabi was getting up from his seat.
"Yeah yeah I'm on it"
Dabi responded back as he started making his way back to the room. You didn't stay asleep for long that was a fact. Once Dabi entered the room you got up and ran to him, clenching onto his jacket as if something had absolutely terrified you to your core but there wasn't anything in his room.
"Hey what's going on?, what's wrong?"
He asked looking down at you but raised a brow when you shook your head no. You pointed over to the dark corner of the room where you could see something standing there but Dabi didn't see anything at all.
"Scary man"
You whimpered and that just seemed to confuse Dabi even more.
"Come on, there's nothing there Y/N"
He said trying to convince you as you looked back at the corner only to see that the scary man was gone and no where to be seen at all. You still didn't let go of Dabi though as you were trembling a bit still not used to seeing things which has been an issue since you were born. You turn up to Dabi, looking at him with a almost pleading look in your eyes.
"There was... he was burned up and staring at me"
You told him with a whimper and Dabi sighed a bit not convinced at all. It was kind of odd that you said how the "man" you seen was all burned up since Dabi has done that to a bunch of people and you hadn't exactly seen his quirk or anything either.
"Listen kid there's no one there alright if anything he might be under the bed"
You latched onto Dabi tightly after he said that now not wanting to go near the bed even remotely. He laughed a bit as he looked down at you.
"I was only joking, jeez your jumpy... Now come on lets get you back to bed yeah?"
Despite his words you still didn't trust it at all and didn't even bother to follow him to the bed. He let out a sigh as you refused to go back to the bed realizing his joke was now a mistake as he wanted to face palm a bit for even saying that but at the same time he just had to mess with you a tiny bit.
"Listen Y/N.... nothing is gonna do anything to you while I'm here alright same with the rest of the league too now lay down and get some damn shut eye alright?"
"You promise dabi?"
"Yes... now bed"
You take Dabi's hand and cautiously walk to the bed staying close to him. He picks you up and lays you on his bed before walking over to a chair and sitting down, leaning back and crossing his arms as he stared at the ceiling. It was a rather long night for dabi who constantly had to deal with you waking up through the night and wanting something or needing to go to the bathroom or whatever it was. When morning came Kurogiri was making breakfast as Magne and Compress were sitting having a cup of coffee while talking when you walked out of the room rubbing your little eyes with dabi walking in behind you.
"look whos up early"
Magne comments as she takes a sip from her coffee while Compress looks back and smiles at you two.
"Don't even start"
Dabi grumbled out. You went over to Compress and stretched your arms out to him wanting to be picked up.
"You want up?"
Compress says as he picks you up and sits you on his lap only for you to reach for his coffee. He chuckled and did let you have a little sip of his drink while Kurogiri was busy on breakfast at the moment.
"Seems you had a rough night?"
Yeah... the brat wouldn't stop waking up through the night"
Dabi responded to Magne as Kurogiri came out with freshly made food, seeing you and Dabi were up as well. He gave Compress and Magne their food and was ready to go and make you a small plate when Compress shook his head no.
"No worries I'll share with the kiddo and make sure she doesn't make a mess"
"alright, would you like anything dabi?"
Dabi looked at Kurogiri as Compress split his toast in half and let you have one half while he had the other.
"No... I don't want anything"
He sounded beyond tired as he sat against the wall. After hours passed by Dabi pulled you aside after he seen Tomura leave the hideout with Twice, Spinner, and Compress. Dabi had a plan on how to annoy the hell out of Tomura, using you in his plan.
"alright listen kid... you see how crusty just left?... every time he leaves you're gonna sneak into his room and take something of his alright?"
"why?"
"cause it's fun that's why. Now I want you to go in his room and take his Nintendo switch. Do that and I'll let you play it"
You smiled so wildly after hearing you get to play something which was the sign Dabi needed. Dabi opens Tomuras bedroom door and lets you go inside to steal Shigs Nintendo. Once you find it you exit the room and hold it up to Dabi who chuckles impressed that you had actually did it.
"Hey not bad kid. Now you can take it to the room and I'll start it up for you"
You chuckle and follow dabi while still keeping ahold of shigs Nintendo switch which you couldn't wait to play it. You never played a video game before so this will be your first time playing one. Dabi helps you on the bed and starts up the game for you before handing it back to you as you sat quietly trying to play it only to end up erasing all of shigaraki's progress on accident which Dabi just shrugs before leaving the room letting you figure it out on your own. Once shigaraki gets back he goes straight to his room and notices his Nintendo switch is gone from the spot he had it which seemed to have pissed him off greatly. He came out of his and looked straight at Dabi with a slight death glare.
"Where the hell is my switch Dabi"
"Why would I have your damn game?"
"Cause you've been finding every damn way to piss me off lately"
Tomura huffed out to Dabi knowing damn well Dabi did something with his switch.
"Yeah well I didn't take your damn switch alright?"
"Oh really?.. then who did dabi?"
Tomura said with a glare his arms crossed over his chest when you came out holding the switch that had died while you were playing it. You held it up to shigaraki and Dabi as Tomura just stared at you blankly for a second before his gaze softened a bit.
"so you're the one who took it huh?"
You look at shigaraki before pointing at Dabi.
"Dabi told me to"
At this rate Dabi started to crack up as Shigaraki gave dabi one hell of a glare.
"Of course he did"
Tomura muttered as dabi was laughing a tiny bit.
"Hey she's just a little villain in training that's all"
He said to Tomura who still wasn't happy about Dabi telling you to take his game out of his room.
"Yeah yeah... you can give it back now"
Shigs said while looking at you holding his hand out for his switch back. You hand it back to him as you look at him with puppy dog eyes.
"Can I play it again?"
You asked him in the cutest way that it was actually kind of hard for him to say no to you but he still had no clue you had accidently deleted all his progress.
"Uh sure... as long as I get it back though"
he said as Dabi snickered more knowing about all his progress being deleted.
"Might want to watch her play it Uncle shigs"
Dabi teased him leaving Tomura almost ready to up and decay his ass at that point.
"Now why would I have to do that when you can watch her?"
Shigaraki asked noticing how Dabi was slightly laughing more. He looked at Tomura with a grin on his face not being able to wait to see his full reaction.
"I'm not wasting my time watching her play your game... also she accidently deleted all your progress"
Dabi snickered seeing the fury in Tomuras face as he heard what Dabi had just told him.
"WHAT!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS DABI!?..... do.. do you even know how far I had gotten in the game!? All the hours I spent getting to where I was!!?"
"You can get there again"
You sat there watching the two go back and forth bickering over the game, watching how Dabi found it all funny while Tomura was absolutely livid though he wasn't exactly mad at you though since it's not exactly your fault since your really young and didn't know what you were doing, all of Tomuras rage was on Dabi at the moment. Magne got up and pulled you aside and handed you a small cup of juice and let you sit with her, twice, and Toga while Dabi and Shigaraki settled their business over the damn game. Magne sat and played patty cake with you, keeping you distracted from the fighting while you drank your juice as well. Once it started getting late Toga sat on the floor with you with paper, pens, markers, and crayons as she was drawing pictures with you.
"Look look I drew Deku Midorya isn't he just so cute"
She said showing you the drawing and you smiled as you looked at her drawing she did. You went to take her picture to look at it more when you seen hands come up from behind her before a figure peaked out from behind her, It's face was missing it's lower jaw, as it looked skinned and horrific. You dropped the picture as your smile faded away instantly as you started to panic moving away from her before letting out a scream. Toga instantly went to your side and gave you a hug* "Hey hey Y/N shhh your okay. What's wrong?" Dabi came out out of his room in a hurry as all the league members were looking at you confused as all hell as you scream and cried as Toga held you trying to calm you down when Dabi tapped Toga and took you from her picking you up and holding you close to him.
"Hey kiddo... your fine alright? what did I say about nobody here will let anything happen to you huh?. Your fine"
"Wow Dabi... you really care for Y/N"
Dabi looked at Toga as he held you trying to get you to calm down, Your hands gripping his jacket tightly out of pure fear, and heart racing in your chest. Toga was worried about you as was everyone else.
"Hey how about we go to the room and we can do something alright?"
Dabi spoke quietly and you nodded your head.
"Okay let's go"
Dabi said before walking to his room with you. He knew you probably see things cause your behavior was odd and you'd freak out, out of nowhere and say you seen things too. At this rate he did believe but he wasn't exactly gonna mention it to the other members though since he knows everyone would easily worry about you, especially Toga who went straight to your aid and gave you a tight hug. Dabi opens his bedroom door and turns on the light.
"I'm gonna set you down now alright?"
You shake your head no instantly. You wanted to stay close to Dabi since he was like the father you never had in your life and he made you feel safe with him. He sighed and sat on the floor with you as he rubbed your back gently.
"Hey"
Dabi said as he pulled you from him keeping his hands on your shoulders. He took one hand off and activated his quirk showing you his blue flame which caught your attention immediately since this was your first time ever seeing his quirk.
"Listen kiddo alright. If anybody or anything tries to do anything I'll burn them to a crisp so you're safe"
He says before standing up and going to his closet and pulling out a bag keeping his flame activated. You tilted your head as he sat down in front of you, pulling out marsh mellows, chocolate, and gram crackers.
"You ever had s'more's before kid?"
"N-no..."
"No? really?... well here.."
He deactivated his quirk and pulled the marsh mellows open along with the chocolate and gram crackers. he placed the chocolate and marsh mellow between the crackers and lit up his flame again and put it in his flame very quickly so it wasn't ruined or burned. He blew on it some to cool it down before giving it to you.
"Try it kiddo. You'll like it I promise"
"Thanks dad"
You responded back to him which caught him off guard fully as he wasn't expecting you to call him that at all but for some reason he really didn't mind it at all and felt a little bit odd that you called him dad.

by far my favourite piece of merch from this weekend (and my favourite photo from the con HAHAHA) (∗˃̶ ᵕ ˂̶∗) i actually hadn’t even realized there was a dabi cosplayer in front of me at first—i had only spotted the plushie, and i was so over the moon about it that it took me a while to notice he was technically, kind of, standing right in front of me (my boyfriend was like ‘i can’t believe i spotted them before you did!’ because i usually spot dabi cosplayers very quickly) >.<
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then i got these!!! and a ton of chocolate and this japanese candy that i thought was gum but was, in fact, definitely not gum (still good tho!)
anyway we had such a blast and i am sad that it’s over but happy with my lil goodies here c:

Old fake screenshot of a fic I’ve yet to write. Hana was taken away by the pro heroes and the league had to go to get her back. Its inspired by the Overhaul arc, where they went to rescue Eri. I call it “save Hana! The league of villains to the rescue”
I have so many wips of fanfics I’ve yet to properly start or finish

So, the Todoroki side plot got thrown in the garbage this chapter...
The less problematic stuff, aka, Geten being a Himura--pointless and just an excuse to explain the ass pull Hori pulls with the actually relevant characters. I think it's a neat that it turns out the Himuras were just as, if not more into Eugenics type shit than Enji. But besides getting a bit more background on Rei's family Geten being a Himura isn't important at all and really didn't need to be included.
As for the rest--it's trash and ultimately could end up with the Todoroki subplot's theme endorsing abuse.
I've seen people defend Touya getting ice as a power up as it proving Enji wrong--proving that Touya was always good enough. Maybe that could have worked if his ice came out only once he was accepted by Enji and at peace, but instead it's the opposite. We are told a Quirk break through happen when people are put in life or death situations. Touya is getting his ice after burning himself into a black skeleton.
Touya getting ice does the following:
Makes Enji right about the Quirk marriage. He and Rei produced a perfect combo first try and later got a second.
Enji was wrong to stop training Touya when he started to burn himself, and instead he should have just dialed up the training and tortured him worse than Shoto because that's what would unlock his ability.
The narrative is essentially saying child abuse is good actually. Again, because Quirks only awaken like this if the person is under extreme duress, if Enji had kept training Touya, but in a way where he didn't burn himself that wouldn't have unlocked his ice. Touya would still be stuck with his handicap and unable to reach his full potential. He wouldn't have become the perfect combo. Enji being non-abusive wouldn't have solved this problem.
The only thing that would have made Touya what Enji wanted is if he'd abused him more physically. If he'd kept training Touya and forced him to burn himself to the bone. Essentially his abuse would be rewarded.
The story is saying that if Enji had just stuck with it, and ignored Touya's physical pain than he would have gotten exactly what he wanted. Yet, instead he stopped the training Touya because it was dangerous for him. He should have spent time in other ways, developed a relationship outside fighting, but that's not the message Hori sends with turn of events.
It also just ruins any growth Touya could have had. He no longer has to see beyond his Quirk. It robs him of realizing that his father should have loved him regardless of his Quirk and more about Enji not seeing him for the perfect boy he always could have been if his father had just set him on fire at four years old. Touya's no longer wrong about anything--his dad should have kept training him, he should have been beat the way Shoto was. If his dad really loved him he would have let Touya burn his skin off.
To me the way Hori has included this power up for Touya ruins the subplot. Whether Hori intended it of not, it's now possible to read it as supporting abuse and self harm. Your kid can't do a thing because they're disabled--keep making them, eventually, once you beat the shit out of them enough they'll be the perfect kid you always wanted. Can't do a thing because you're disabled and it hurts you--keep doing it, even to the point of full body break down because in the end you'll achieve your goal.
It's become "See dad, you should have loved me because I was perfect the entire time!" instead of "it doesn't matter what your kids can do, you should love them anyway".

Do you know if Riddle, or Tray, ever stands up to his mother? I think i saw it in a Pinterest post once of teen Riddle being slapped by his mom and Tray taking him away.
His background is sadder than Shoto Todoroki from BNHA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We don’t really get to hear about how things are going back home with Mrs. Rosehearts outside of one brief instance. In 4-3, Riddle is leaving for winter break and mentions he intends on speaking with his mother, though he isn’t optimistic about her listening.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trey states in the same part of the story that he isn’t allowed at Riddle’s house (because Mrs. Rosehearts has banned him). However, Riddle is still invited to visit him and Chenya at the Clover family bakery (though it’s very unlikely Riddle would be able to, since he hasn’t canonically seen Chenya again since the unbirthday party of book 1).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We never get a follow-up on how the conversation between Riddle and his mother went. It’s never touched upon again, and his mom isn’t really brought up beyond this case. (I did happen to write a short piece about Trey, Riddle, and Mrs. Rosehearts interacting though, if you were interested in seeing my own interpretation of this idea.)
Riddle spends most of his time at NRC since it’s a boarding school, meaning there are few opportunities for him to directly interact with his mother. Even if Mrs. Rosehearts were readily accessible to him, I highly doubt we would get to witness Riddle or Trey doing much to talk back to her. As we see in book 4, Riddle is still quite meek and uncertain when it comes to speaking with his mom. Trey, meanwhile, is generally very non-confrontational and may still be dealing with his own complicated feelings about interfering with what are family matters. (Recall that the last time he encouraged Riddle to be adventurous, it resulted in his friend being severely punished and Trey may harbor guilt over this occurrence.) I feel that neither of them would realistically develop the courage to talk back to Mrs. Rosehearts when only like half a year has passed since Riddle’s OB incident as opposed to like seventeen years of Riddle living under her rules.
***CONTENT WARNING: I will be discussing abuse at length under the cut, so please be advised to avoid reading further if the topic makes you uncomfortable.***
Regarding the comic you saw on Pinterest, it is fan art. That is in no way canonical; Mrs. Rosehearts may be very stern and have a temper, but she has never slapped or otherwise put a hand on Riddle. The closest thing we get to a slap is this panel from the manga adaptation, which isn’t even a slap. You can tell from the movement lines and the FWP sfx that Mrs. Rosehearts is just quickly pulling her arm away since Riddle is trying to latch onto it in an attempt to get her to listen to his protests. There is also no mark on Riddle or harsh slap sfx to indicate contact was made.
Tumblr media
Now then 💦 There's something very serious and relevant to this ask I'd actually like to discuss, so I hope you'll stick around to hear me out on this.
I know none of us really like Mrs. Rosehearts (which is fair, she has done a lot of terrible things to her son). However, I think it's dangerous for us to speak about her as though she's a total monster and nothing more than a monster. I'm NOT going to stand here and advocate that she has done nothing wrong (she definitely has committed many wrongs). What I'm saying is that I don't agree with her being treated like "just" an abuser.
Let's say we do demonize Mrs. Rosehearts. We see only her negative traits and allow those to define her entire character. This creates a scenario in which she is alienated and dehumanized, left as a caricature of a woman that is solely known for hurting her child. But the thing is, this ISN’T how abuse really works. Few abusers are completely wicked people through and through. Part of the reason why it is so difficult for victims to leave their abusers is because abusers almost never start off abusive. They usually act totally normal, and the abuse often doesn’t come until later or specific situations arise. It creeps up on you in an almost insidious manner, and you don’t expect it coming. I’d also like to mention that abusers often don’t act with the intentional thought of, “Yeah, what I’m doing/saying is abusive”. Abusers typically justify their actions or convince themselves they are acting out of goodness. They don’t do bad things “because they’re bad people”, they do bad things because they think they’re GOOD people. Some abusers may even be victims themselves.
By painting abusers (even fictional ones) as cartoonishly evil, irredeemable, or always cruel, it makes it harder for us to believe the very real danger that we, whom we see as “good” people, could become “bad” ourselves. It makes it harder to believe victims when they report abuse because “oh, the abuse isn’t THAT bad”. It erases the idea that abusers are also human, and that humans have the capacity to be awful sometimes or to perpetuate hurt. It makes it so much harder to identify abuse because we’d only be looking for the most extreme examples of it rather than noticing the small, subtle signs. By “othering” abusers, it’s inadvertently denying so many nuances of abuse... which ultimately is counterproductive.
I would like to point out that even in the example provided of another abusive parent, Endeavor is portrayed with some nuance. He physically and verbally abused his wife, neglected the children he deemed worthless, and pushed the child he deemed to be his successor to the brink. However, Endeavor is also shown to remember a detail as small as his (arranged) wife’s favorite flower when she only told him about it once. He is notably much more lenient when training his first son, who didn’t have the ideal Quirk he sought. Endeavor at one point even confesses to pursuing being a hero in order to avoid the demands of fatherhood, which demonstrates a realistic insecurity and vulnerability… his humanity.
The same could be true for Mrs. Rosehearts. We only assume he is “just an abuser” because we see her in such a limited scope. There are valid reasons to believe why she is a “good” person outside of how we see her acting in Riddle’s recollections, and this may help to explain why Riddle feels so hesitant to “stand up” to her. I would really recommend reading this post, which goes a lot more in-depth about the complications surrounding Riddle’s relationship with his mother. Again, I am in NO WAY defending Mrs. Rosehearts; I am only pointing out that abusers—no matter how horrible their actions—have identities beyond the label of “abuser” that should be acknowledged.

you seem optimistic so you think we’re still getting shigaraki back? :( i’m really sad the way hori has handled the izuku tenko plotline as of right now like i just can’t wrap my head around this
I mean, I definitely think it's a possibility. We still don't know exactly what happened to overhaul/decay, and how it may be used in the future. We saw Tenko and Deku touch fists; theoretically there could have been some kind of exchange there, or he could be existing as a vestige in some way.
Then again, (and this is going to piss a lot of people off :')) I kind of... get where Horikoshi is going with it?
BEFORE YOU START BOOING!
I think a lot of the discomfort and hurt from fans comes from the perception that Izuku failed to save Tenko. That, by allowing him to die, the narrative is in fact saying he didn't deserve to be save--that Horikoshi himself doesn't believe Tenko truly deserved it. I have also seen a lot of talk about how it doesn't fit in with the ongoing, overarching themes of the narrative, and (while I'm not saying these people are wrong) I would like to push back on that a little, because I think there is precedence in the story as to why Tenko's death holds up, despite it being terrible.
The culmination of Tenko's arc broaches a crossroad of two major concepts in the story: heroes, and saving, and what both of those ideas mean. And, I think, in Tenko's death, we get and answer to both, and more importantly, an answer to his overall purpose.
What does it mean to save? In BNHA, the concept is a little vague. I've often people ascribe the "total victory" mindset as one of protection, as preventing any tragedy or harm. Through that lens, Tenko's death therefore is an automatic failure--a nonstarter. HE's dead, so he wasn't saved. The end. However, while "saving" might seem like a simple, straight forward concept, I would like to dig a little deeper, because I think what Horikoshi's doing is much more interesting.
Saving (Deku's definition of it, anyway) is a lot closer to freeing than it is to protecting. Which sounds weird, but I'll do my best to explain. I think the two best examples of this particular nuance to his definition are actually in two characters people tend to forget he saved: Shoto and Gentle Criminal.
Because he did save both of them. Not in the really obvious, black-and-white way he saved Eri, no, but he did save them. And both times were... painful, to say the least.
Tumblr media
When Deku went after Shoto during the sport's festival, it wasn't, like, nice. He dug his little nerd fingers in where it hurt the worst and dragged out Shoto's biggest fears and insecurities, and then he said GET OVER THEM. Stop letting them control you. Stop letting your father control you. You're your own person, and you get to make your own choices.
He didn't punch Endeavor. He didn't even take pity on Shoto, or say he was sorry. But you know what he did do? Deku cut the leash. AND he damn near killed Shoto (and himself) making sure that Shoto understood that he was free. He gave Shoto back something that he'd been missing, something he was afraid to look in the face; something that Deku picked up, brushed off, and said, "please stop throwing this away, it's important. You're important".
And it works, goddamit.
Tumblr media
Gentle is both different and similar. In a similar vein, the way Deku saves Gentle is sort of... not obvious. But I think if you look here:
Tumblr media
Gentle isn't a bad person. He's ambitious and a little lax about the law, but he never set out to hurt anybody. But we see over the course of his arc how he gets so tangled up in his own pain and his desperation to be seen that he forgets his own ideals, his own morals. In the face of becoming someone, he loses sight of what matters most to him: just like Deku, Gentle wants to be a hero.
Which, in the end, he is. And Deku's the one who pushes him there.
Tumblr media
But what about Tenko? What about the crying child inside him? Why wasn't he saved?
When people talk about child Tenko, they often seem to see him as a symbol of the person that Deku's trying to save. But I think that, just maybe, that's wrong. I think maybe, actually, Deku is trying to save Tenko from that child.
Tumblr media
Child Tenko is, in many ways, a symbol of nothing but AFO's power. That is a child stripped of his name, of his original quirk, of his family, of his sense of self. That is a puppet controlled by AFO, without any autonomy of its own. That child is a wound that Tenko cannot escape for as long as AFO still holds any power over him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's why this chapter All Might said that maybe Deku did save Tenko, if he no longer saw the child version of him in the vestige realm. Deku did save him. Because Tenko isn't a child anymore, and he isn't AFO's puppet; he's a free man, for the first time in his life.
A free man who chooses to be a hero.
Heroes get talked about a lot in BNHA (duh), but what is the defining quality of a true hero? Someone who wins? Sure. Someone who saves? Yeah, of course. But the actual test of what differentiates a hero from everybody else is their willingness to sacrifice. To give up everything for the greater good. Even if it hurts. Sometimes especially if it hurts. I mean, this has come up a lot through the manga. Deku running in to attack the sludge villain, Mirio giving up his quirk, Eraserhead throwing himself in front of his students, Edgeshot shortening his lifespan to save Bakugo, All Might standing quirkless in front of the greatest evil of his time-- literally the constant refrain from the narrative has been that being willing to sacrifice it all is what makes a hero a hero.
Tenko's final wish from last chapter is gut wrenching, but: he wanted to be a hero for the Villains. The rest of the world can rot for all he cares, but his friends, those disenfranchised, hurt people that everyone else gave up on? Those people who have never been saved, those people who have never been protected... he wants to be their hero. In the face of danger, of certain doom, he is a free man, and he has a choice.
Tumblr media
So he makes a sacrifice. His final act is to become a hero. For them.
Tumblr media
Cue the sobbing tears.
Additionally, I think it's relevant to point out here how strongly the narrative has advocated for victimhood to be divorced from being a perpetual self-identity. It really emphasizes the power of choosing to rise above your situation and pain to help other people, while also suggesting that your pain does not excuse you from hurting people. You can be a victim and you can be a perpetrator; they are not mutually exclusive. And because of this, after Deku saves Tenko, he does not owe him. He saved Tenko, but he could not keep him alive, and... I don't think that it's about Tenko deserving or not deserving to die. It's just that Tenko had reached a point of no return where his only choices were to die a slave or die free and he broke his shackles. But he was always going to die. Doomed by the narrative, both literally and figuratively. We can argue all day as to what degree of responsibility he holds for his actions as a highly abused, traumatized, often shell of a person. But the point is that at every junction of the story, Tenko (and the story around him) escalated until he was trapped. There wasn't a way out, and it's heartbreaking, and maybe that's the point.
I'm not saying it's fair. I'm certainly not saying you have to like it. But... I don't know. I don't feel like this is some completely out of pocket, off-the-rails end that destroyed all its characters. And who knows! Maybe Tenko will be brought back later. Maybe the epilogue will get progressively worse and I'll hate it. Maybe I'll finally get some sleep and regret writing this at all. I have no idea. Really. But we're all in this together, so these are my thoughts right now :)
