Hey @msviolacea, do you remember this one? i feel like we would have been hanging out in that neighborhood back in the day but I don't think I saw it.
Since “wildly vehement disagreements” are on my mind, here is the most brutal forum fight I ever witnessed, and I will try to present it with as little judgment as possible:
It was Fametracker, maybe 2003 or so. A discussion came up somehow: what do you do with your trash after seeing a movie in the theater? You know, popcorn buckets, candy boxes, soda cups, used napkins?
Two sides emerged, and each side felt that they were obviously, unquestionably, self-evidently right:
1) You leave your trash in your seat because they pay employees to pick it up for you
2) You throw away your own trash because you are capable of doing so (if you are)
That was it. I have NEVER seen such vitriol. The entire userbase got involved and people probably got banned over it. There seemed to be some kind of regional breakdown; whichever side you argued for, it was something that EVERYONE around you did, you had grown up in the obvious rightness of doing it, and it was OFFENSIVE to suggest doing otherwise. I am sure you are staring at this going, “You… you obviously [XYZ]?” However certain you feel about that, there were people on that forum (and maybe even here!) who were exactly as certain of the opposite.

20 Questions Game
Thanks for the tag, @wrathofthestag!
How many works do you have on AO3?
51
2. What's your total AO3 words count?
577,841
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently Check, Please!, which is also the only fandom I have fics for on ao3, but I've also written for Parks and Recreation and The Baby-Sitters Club. And I have a Black Widow WIP that I started writing for a friend and haven't found a way back to.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
All I Want is You Just Jack Here Comes the Sun  I Only Have Pies for You And you may ask yourself, well, how did I get here?
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I always try to respond to comments, but sometimes some slip through the cracks.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Regular readers of my fic know don't do unhappy endings, but I'll say With Extra Chocolate Chips because while it's a soft, fluffy fic, the problem that exists at the beginning hasn't been resolved by the end.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
All of my endings are happy, lol. But I'll say And you may ask yourself, well, how did I get here? because it has three happy endings. (Bitty deserves all the happy endings.)
8. Do you get hate on fics?
If people hate my fic, they have fortunately kept it to themselves.
9. Do you write smut. If so what kind?
I'm so bad at writing smut. Maybe I've written some things that are smut adjacent, but most of it is awkward and/or humorous with a lot of talking and laughter.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I've never written a crossover.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope.
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
Years ago, between my kids being born (so...2004?), I cowrote a BSC "Super Special" fic with a bunch of people I met in the BSC thread on the old Fametracker forums. I wrote a couple of the Dawn chapters.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
It's definitely a tie between Jack and Bitty from Check, Please! and Leslie and Ben from Parks and Rec.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Longtime followers might remember my AU where Bitty and Jack meet later in life, when their daughters are college roommates. I started writing it months before I even posted anything for this fandom. And I just haven't been able to figure it out. Part of it is that it's so complex, with two original characters (the daughters) and four different POVs. I haven't quite figured out where I want one daughter's plot to go. I've since written a fic with a similar concept (Bitty and Jack never kiss, reunite years later when they both have teenage daughters), but it's still very different from this WIP. I'd like to say I'll eventually finish it but at this point who knows.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue, probably.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Any type of description, particularly how things move or work, which is probably why I have such a hard time writing smut.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
If it works for the fic, sure, though I'm only fluent in English so it's unlikely I would ever do it.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
When I was 7, I read all of Beverly Cleary's Ramona books and was distraught that I couldn't find out what happened next. My dad told me to write my own Ramona book so I did. I think I wrote one chapter before abandoning it because I'd discovered Judy Blume's books.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
This is such a tough call, but right now it might be And you may ask yourself, well, how did I get here? because it has a good blend of fluff and angst, three happy endings, a wild premise that still managed to be (as of its writing) canon compliant, and one of my absolute favorite scenes that I've ever written. Writing it was such a good time, and I miss when my words flowed that easily.
Tagging @cricketnationrise, @sweatersinthesummer, @the-lincyclopedia, @anyawen, @montrealmadison, @ohyoufool, and whoever else wants to share!

I’m old enough to remember going to a site every day to look at fic, manips, amvs etc and then without warning it’s just gone, bc it got C&D’d into oblivion
sites disappearing when free web hosts like Homestead etc completely died in favor of blogging platforms like LJ and eventually social networks. multiple purges, losing stories and vids
it’s just hard to explain to ppl who haven’t been thru this over and over again the sense of loss you feel, and the powerlessness, the relationships you lose when communities just vanish, when shit is just gone. I still miss a specific thread on Fametracker years later (Good Movie Manners Cost Nothing) and the various TWoP boards I hung out on (Buffy and Angel and even 24 of all things). nowadays things don’t disappear due to purges, not now that the corporate conglomerates who control our media have discovered there is money to be made in fandom. now it’s watching fan communities get snapped up by the big media corps and gutted of their fannish soul to be monetized and sold back to us and then inevitably shut down. over and over again this has happened. I get why ppl are so adamant about preventing that. And I bristle when mfers say nothing of value would be lost if AO3 shut down tomorrow just bc of some of the garbage posted on there. there are too many writers of color, queer & trans writers doing amazing ownvoices fic on there for me to ever believe some shit like that.
idk. shit is just really complicated. having lived through the progression of internet based fandom in real time gives a kind of perspective on this endless war over AO3 and its TOS. I don’t like how extreme it is and what it protects, at all. I have been candid about the role fic played in my own grooming and abuse in pre-web internet. we desperately need a moderated fic archive with standards, by fans for fans and not for advertisers. But I also don’t know that I would trust some of the loudest voices in these debates not to turn it into a circle jerk clown show of infighting and respectability politics. numerous times I’ve seen basic, extremely reasonable and innocuous moderation policies get weaponized and turned on the very marginalized ppl they’re meant to protect. there’s also a human cost to moderation that needs to be considered, who is doing the job of keeping ppl safe and how are they being supported. (I’ve read one too many articles about the toll of sifting thru vile content daily on the exploited workers who do it for FB, YT, etc) People who disingenuously twist SJ language they don’t understand to fight garden variety ship wars abt cartoon characters don’t really fill me w confidence.

I spent those years hanging out on a baby name snark forum, Fametracker, and fandom_wank, and yeah, lots of drama and absolutely shitty behavior was on display on all three.
“The Internet has never been a friendly place” is one of those statements that both is and isn’t true.
Like, yes, on the one hand, there’s always been loads of vile shit.
On the other hand, there legitimately was a brief interregnum spanning the late 1990s through the very early 2000s where the web was getting fairly popular, but most of the really vile shit was still confined to Usenet.
So if a. your formative years happened to fall exactly in that span, and b. you were exclusively a web user and never ventured into the older parts of the online infrastructure, you may well have had a very different experience from those whose preceded and followed you.

My Favorite Stuff of 2016
I was asked today if I had any favorite records of 2016, and after some consideration, the answer is no. I just didn’t listen to much music this year, and I’m actually relying on the year end lists of others to rectify that. I did watch a bunch of stuff and listen to a bunch of podcasts this year, so here is a list of stuff that moved me in those media, as well as two live music events that rocked me to bits in 2016.
Live music
The Local H reunion with original drummer Joe Daniels for a tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their second record, As Good As Dead, kicked off in Chicago at the Metro on the anniversary weekend, April 15 and 16. I was there, and it was huge for me. Folks who know me know that Local H has been the band I’ve most consistently followed ever since seeing them touring for AGAD opening for Stone Temple Pilots in Philadelphia in November of 1996. So to be in their hometown for two sold out shows with Joe behind the kit for a set comprised of the entire AGAD record was amazing. It was made only better by the fact that current drummer Ryan Harding and singer/guitar/bass lunatic Scott Lucas kicked off the proceedings with a blistering set, and Lucas was then flanked by both drummers beating the ever-loving fuck out of a pair of quivering drum kits for a finale heavy on tunes from my favorite H record, 1998′s Pack Up the Cats. I would catch up with the tour a few weeks later in DC and Philly, a night that ended with a cheesesteak outing with the band and began with the fellas even tighter and more comfortable playing together. These dates were the highlights of my crappy 2016.
Nearly as awesome was seeing New Oreans sludge weirdos eyehategod in a tiny club in New York City in the fall. I’ve certainly seen EHG in tiny clubs before, but on this tour Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe was filling in for the ailing Mike Williams, and he was insane. I haven’t been into LoG for many years, and they long ago grew out of playing clubs, but this was a reminder of why I loved them so much. Blythe was a force of nature, a wild animal unleashed on a stage to a small room 2/3 full. Dude is the truth. Williams had a successful liver transplant at the end of the year, so hopefully he’ll back out croaking his unearthly vocals for the band soon enough, but catching the Blythe version was a real treat.
Podcasts
Extra Hot Great remains my favorite podcast. The crew who brought you Television Without Pity and Fametracker brave tech issues and thousands of miles of distance to bring discussion of television and ridiculous games. David T. Cole, Sarah D. Bunting, and Tara Ariano are the best thing I pipe into my earholes every week.
Slate’s Panoply network has expanded to include a wealth of great content, but I still gravitate to the OG lineup of The Culture Gabfest, Hang Up and Listen, and The Political Gabfest, which I turn on as soon as I wake up on Friday mornings. Each of these has three hosts with unique points of view and awesome chemistry, though they aren’t afraid to disagree.
The Read is Kid Fury and Crissle. Angry. Black. Queer. Put on your helmet!
The Film Pigs have the only podcast about movies on the internet, and certainly the only one that Chuck D. composed theme music for. Just ask them.
The Cracked Podcast often retreads ground covered in the articles on the site, but it’s worth it to hear Jason Pargin aka David Wong talk about anything. Dude is smart, thoughtful, and the kind of voice that needs exposure behind a humor site.
We Hate Movies. Start with the Boondock Saints II  episode. You’ll thank me.
Television
Fleabag (Amazon Prime): This show you guys! Six episodes. Three hours. I dare you not to do it in one go. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a revelation as the eponymous hero with a foul mouth and the need to nervously chat with the audience throughout her adventures. To say too much would be doing disservice to the fantastic narrative that Waller-Bridge, who also created and wrote the show, has constructed. Just brace yourself for a wallop of an ending--and the urge to start over again as soon as you’ve finished. This was my favorite tv thing in 2016.
Catastrophe (Amazon Prime): Season two. Rob and Sharon are parents. What could go wrong?
Banshee (Cinemax): This show aired its fourth and final season in 2016, though I only caught up with the first three seasons earlier in the year. It’s the show for folks (like me) who love the kind of R-rated, big dumb action pictures that Hollywood doesn’t make anymore. An unnamed thief gets out of prison after 15 years and hauls ass to small town Pennsylvania to meet up with the woman he left behind. By chance, he witnesses the death of the town’s new sheriff, and using quick thinking and a hacker best friend dressed in drag, assumes the sheriff’s identity. As sheriff Nate Hood, our hero fights crime and corruption, and an apostate Amish kingpin. The action is filmed spectacularly, the violence would make Kurt Sutter blush, and it’s Cinemax, so you know the sex is sultry and plentiful. This show is an underrated gem.
Rectify (Sundance Network): Like Banshee, this one wrapped a four season run in 2016, and I had only just caught up with it. The tale of Daniel Holden, a man sentenced to death at 18 and released nearly twenty years later on a technicality (the show is cagey about his guilt), this is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen on television, full stop. With standout supporting performances from Abigail Spencer and Clayne Crawford so powerful that I followed the actors to lesser network dramas, this show creates a portrait of people just trying to work through an emotional bomb that as been dropped as the shattered son, brother, friend, and step-brother they thought they’d never see again walks among them. Powerful stuff from Ray McKinnon, who I still think of as Reverend Smith on Deadwood.
Better Call Saul (AMC): Season two finds Jimmy with the opportunity to settle in as a legit lawyer and partner to Kim. Watching him willfully blow it is agony.
Search Party (TBS): So yeah...TBS is making quality dramedies now. Alia Shawkat leads a group of painfully self-involved friends as they search for a missing girl who they sort of maybe knew in college. Being lost in life is the real thematic game here, and the show finds a fresh way to engage this age-old trope.
Bojack Horseman (Netflix): I’m not sure that there has been a show as depressing as this one. Bojack Horseman wraps the self destructive tendencies of Walter White, Don Draper, and James McGill together and multiplies them. It’s made worse because he also really feels things, kind of. The third season dropped on Netflix in 2016, but you have to start from the beginning and give the show some time to hook you. It’s well worth it.
The People V. O.J. Simpson (FX): Never in a million years did I think I would even like this, but boy howdy... I loved it. Sarah Paulson is jaw-dropping in bringing Marcia Clark to life and her chemistry with Sterling K. Brown’s Christopher Darden is scorching. Whether or not Darden and Clark hooked up in real life, I can’t imagine many folks who didn’t want these two characters to just get busy already. Courtney B. Vance crushed the role of Johnnie Cochran. And what in God’s name was Travolta doing?! I hate Ryan Murphy products. I loved this show!
Finally, I’m going to toss out a group of good but not great shows that also watched intently in 2016. The Girlfriend Experience on STARZ expands on Soderbergh’s film with a real actress this time (though I think Sasha Grey did what was asked of her in the film). Quarry on Cinemax tells the story of a man who returns to Memphis after two tours in Vietnam and finds himself drawn into a mysterious underworld as an assassin. Lethal Weapon on FOX is far better than it has any right to be, and casts Rectify’s brilliant Clayne Crawford as Riggs to Damon Wayans’s Murtaugh. And Timeless on NBC tells the story of a hijacked time machine and the ragtag crew sent to chase it through American history. Abigail Spencer shows up in this one, so score another extension of Rectify. None of these shows is going to compete with greats like Rectify or Breaking Bad or The Wire, but even in a crowded tv market, I think they are worth a look. They are solid.
Movies
This is a short one as I saw very few new movies in 2016.
Green Room: Jeremy Saulnier brings the hurt with this tale of a hardcore band touring the Pacific northwest who get caught up with group of violent skinheads after a gig. Practical gore. Psychological horror. Patrick Stewart bringing soft-spoken menace as the cool leader of the neo-Nazi group. Also, one of Anton Yelchin’s final performances before his tragic death. This one had me watching through my fingers in the theater.
Brand: A Second Coming: This documentary chronicling the ups and downs of Russell Brand was probably the most thought-provoking film I saw all year. Directed by Ondi Timoner, who has made a career of examining male hubris, this film depicts a man who seems to truly mean well but simply cannot get out of his own way. I found it to be a very powerful character study.
The Nice Guys: I’m in the bag for Shane Black. He still makes the big dumb action pictures. I even liked Russell Crowe in this one.
The Conjuring 2: Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are terrific. These films are legit scary. James Wan expertly uses his camera for maximum tension.
Blue Jay: Sarah Paulson again. I love her. And I’ve also become very fond of Mark Duplass the actor. I’ve mentioned this film before. A lovely two-hander about what could have (and maybe should have) been.
So that’s it. On to 2017! Thanks for reading.

A tale retold
I first told this story some twenty years ago, and it happened even earlier than that, so here's the Modern Retelling with Historical Context:
For many years, I had—well, you've heard of naturally curly hair? I had unnaturally curly hair. I had a stylist so brilliant that she was able to give me occasional perms that no one could tell were chemical. NO, FOR REAL, I constantly got compliments on my long, rippling hair. In reality, my hair is deplorably fine and flat, although I'm told I have a ton of it; putting in some wave made me feel better, you know? I just wanted to co-wash, air-dry, and go live my tousled life. But after my spinal surgery, I just couldn't spend 2-3 hours in a stylist's chair anymore. And so, after 20 years of my best Galadriel impression, I've had to make peace with my natural texture, the only thing about me (I realize now) that is actually straight.
But this story takes place back in 1996; I was a junior in high school, and I had the freshest of perms. Just absolutely exuberant. Downright Pre-Raphaelite. It had only been done the weekend before, and it usually took about two weeks for the curls to settle down and look less poodly natural, but I wasn't going to miss Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. When I was in grad school years later, my Shakespeare professor went to the mat for this movie, declaring it the best adaptation of any of his plays. And she wasn't a Leo fangirl, either. I tend to agree. And I got to see it on a big screen, opening night, with my best friend and my fresh luscious elbow-length '90s 'do. Banger soundtrack, the big bold visuals that tip over into Maybe Too Much in Moulin Rouge—I'm enthralled, I'm absorbed. Claire Danes is weeping over Dead Romeo, and we all know what’s about to happen in this, a 400-year-old play, but you still hope against hope that somehow it won’t this time. And then I feel something that's not emotion.
Something behind me. In my hair.
It's clammy. This tiny moist hand... creeping... up my neck.
Bear in mind, these are classic movie theater seats, not the big recliners you get now. My head is vulnerable to rear attack. And these tiny fingers, like a gummy little doll's hand, are crawling up my neck, under, through my hair. I am now sitting bolt upright, frozen. What the fuck is going on. It’s still creeping like a little spider up my scalp to the back of my head—put your hand up to yours, get your fingertips to the roots of your hair and really get a sense of what this feels like—
These fingers close, slowly, around the greediest handful of hair they can get hold of, and YANK.
I whip around while Juliet is sobbing—darkness.
To this day, I have no idea who (or what?) that tiny hand belonged to. I mean, you gotta think it was a small child enticed by the siren song of my curls, right? Some parents just didn’t spring for a babysitter on a big opening night, and there’s a Millennial out there with some real interesting core memories, I guess? I couldn't make out anything in the darkness behind me, and we were at kind of a key cinematic moment, so I didn't have time for more than a stern warning glare To Whom It Might Concern. And then I held onto my hair for the remainder of the movie. I chopped it all off within a few months, and went to college with short, straight hair, unable to forget the Cursèd Touch of the Hand. lol jk I just wanted a change and regretted it instantly.
So, happy 20th anniversary to the story I told on the Fametracker forums all those years ago. I can still remember exactly what that hand felt like: tiny. And moist.

20 questions for fic writers
Thank you to @cricketnationrise and @the-lincyclopedia for the tags! I'm not sure if many of my answers have changed since the last time I did one of these, but it's been a while, so.
How many works do you have on ao3?
54
What's your total ao3 word count?
613,109
What fandoms do you write for?
I only have works for Check, Please! on ao3, but I have also written for Parks and Recreation and Baby-Sitters Club.
Top five fics by kudos:
All I Want is You
Just Jack
Here Comes the Sun
I Only Have Pies for You  (honestly surprised this one is in the top 5!)
And you may ask yourself, well, how did I get here?
Do you respond to comments?
I try to respond to every comment, but sometimes I fall short. I do appreciate every single one, though!
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I'm pretty sure that anybody who's read my stories knows I only write happy endings. Even if there is angst at some point in the fic, you can count on that "angst with a happy ending" tag.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
lol, see above. Though I will maintain that And you may ask yourself, well, how did I get here? and And you may say to yourself, my god, what have I done? might be the happiest simply because they each have (spoiler alert) three happy endings.
Do you get hate on fics?
I'm sure there are people who don't love my writing for whatever reason, but fortunately they've kept it to themselves.
Do you write smut?
Any attempts have probably fallen short of being actual smut. It's not my favorite thing to write (so many body parts to describe and keep track of!) but sometimes the storyline dictates it.
Craziest crossover:
I'm not generally a fan of crossovers (though I've read some great ones in various fandoms!) and have never written a true crossover, but Pucks and Recreation was inspired by Parks and Recreation.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I'm aware.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
A BSC fic with a bunch of people from the old FameTracker (I am showing my age) forums. It is (or was, last time I looked a few years ago) on FF.net. Once I randomly saw somebody somewhere online describing the fic in question but thinking it was a real BSC book they'd read, so that was pretty cool.
All time favorite ship?
Jack/Bitty, Ben/Leslie, and let's go way back to my formative grumpy/sunshine ship: Jack and Jennifer from Days of Our Lives. It imprinted on me when I was 11 and I'm probably remembering it as being better than it was, but it was a good time.
What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
At this point, I really don't know. I have a lot of "WIPs" that consist of a couple of paragraphs of dialogue or bullet-point lists or whatever and who knows if I'll ever dust them off. But I'm currently making an effort to finish everything I've put serious time into.
What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Description.
Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
As a reader I don't have a problem with it if it makes sense for the story. As a writer I probably wouldn't, simply because I don't speak another language well enough to incorporate it.
First fandom you wrote in?
That I actually published online? The Baby-Sitters Club, in like 2005. Ever? I went through this phase of writing self-insert fics when I was in sixth grade. Usually they involved me dating whichever character was played by an actor I had a crush on. I was not aware I was writing fanfic at this time. I'm pretty sure I wrote a fic in which I was in a band with Doogie Howser, MD and he asked me to be his girlfriend? THANK GOODNESS this was in an era before I had access to a computer with internet.
(A year or so later, I was still writing, but it was very bad romance fiction modeled after all the Harlequin romance novels I was reading at the time. Still just as cringe. My middle school BFF used to read them and write praise/critiques in the margins and I still remember this one long back-and-forth where we argued about how long a first kiss should last, because neither of us had experience in that department.)
Favorite fic you've written?
I don't know! I love all my children. Truthfully it's probably one of my multi-chapter fics, but I tend to favor whichever I'm in the mood to read at the moment. Maybe today it's Home Like Apple Pie.

Weekend links: April 1, 2023
No April Fooling; I have AFD grudges, I would never.
If you ever followed any of my previous blogs, you will remember how I used to do news linkspams, and while I intended this to just be "here's what I posted this week," that's the format this has drifted towards. Ah well, enjoy.
My posts:
Varney the Vampire: Chapter 6: Family background and a mystery we will probably never return to
Varney the Vampire: Chapter 7: The chapter about the matches
Perfume review: Black Opium Extreme, or: skin chemistry going rogue
Poll: Do you throw away your trash at the movie theater? Background: the Fametracker forums were a very strange place in 2003. I have never actually seen Tumblr united on a topic, but here we are.
Do you have any wildly irrational neurodivergent aversions? Because I do, and it's apparently "'wearing brown."
The history of saphiret glass, which is used in very pretty blue-brown costume jewelry, re: trying to unpack the irrational brown thing.
Galleon ships made from pearl necklaces, a perfectly fine thing I have no quarrel with.
Reblogs of interest:
