Kingdom Hearts is Like a Chess Game...And It Explains the Characters' Story Arcs
If you've played the series up until KH3 you should know that the story of Kingdom Hearts and the characters within our current tale are likened to pieces on a chess board an ample amount of times, especially where Eraqus and Xehanort's chess-like game are a literal re-enactment of the events of the KH3 Keyblade Graveyard war between Light and Darkness.
Despite Kingdom Hearts' chess-like game being well...chess-like and and not an exact 1:1 of chess, we know at the very least that there is a "King" piece within the Kingdom Hearts' chess game. With the introduction of Verum Rex (Verum meaning true Rex meaning King) in KH3 as well as one of the secret endings with Yozora in Re:Mind being titled "Falsus Rex" (False King) entertains the idea that our KH chess game maintains the same (or similar) chess pieces that regular chess has. That is, a King piece, Queen piece, 2 Rooks, 2 Knights, 2 Bishops and 8 Pawns.
This being said, I want to explore which Kingdom Hearts character is which chess piece.
Tumblr media
We know there is a Verum Rex/True King and a Falsus Rex/False King. Yozora is the True King of his Quadratum Universe. The Kingdom Hearts universe is the unreality-reality mirror to Quadratum, meaning that there must be a True King in the Kingdom Hearts universe as well. The true "King" of the KH Realm is most likely Riku, the Keyblade's original and true chosen and he looks nearly identical to Yozora as opposite Kings on a chessboard would. The False King, in this particular case, would be Sora since he wasn't the Keyblade's true chosen and only obtained the power because Riku fell to darkness and his heart's light passed the Keyblade to Sora making him the replacement/fake. However, I don't believe being a False King is Sora's true role in the Kingdom Hearts game of chess. I believe that if Riku's heart never fell to darkness, Sora would be a completely different chess piece that I will get to later.
The other pieces contain a Queen, 2 Rooks, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights and 8 Pawns, giving us a 15 pieces (16 total if you include the King). Now in the Kingdom Hearts game of chess there are only 7 (original) Light Guardians, however in the final battle there are actually 10 Total Guardians: King Mickey, Sora, Aqua, Ventus, Axel, Kairi, (and Riku) are the original 7 and then Terra, Roxas and Xion join the fight after being saved. 12 if we count Donald and Goofy and 13 if we count Riku Replica, but it doesn't stop there. Namine made an appearance as well and helped shift the tide by finding Terra's Lingering Will and connecting him to the battle, and Master Yen Sid also joined the fight in the graveyard. The final piece and final character to help in the war is the light from the past, Ephemer.
In other words, we actually have all 16 chess pieces present in the Keyblade War (on both sides if we include Demyx, Vexen and the Xehanort Replicas as the final 3 to the 13 Darknesses). If we match the pieces with the characters I believe it goes something like this based not only on their role within the War but also their importance and contribution to the overall story. Please know that some of these positions can be debated:
Terra - Rook. Terra reconnecting with his Will and Body drastically alter the events of the Graveyard. TerraNort single-handedly defeated all of the Guardians and Terra's intervention stopped them from losing and altered the timeline altogether. Plus, Terra was also carrying the Heart of Master Eraqus who ultimately ended the war by stopping Xehanort. Considering Terra's value to the War, I can't view him as any piece less than a Rook.
Ephemer - Rook. Though he plays a minimal role in the entire Keyblade Graveyard war and no role at all in the entire Xehanort Saga, his small appearance is what saves the wielders from total demise yet again to the Giant Demon Tide. Since he saved Light from expiring at the part in time where they were destined to expire he is a crucial chess piece. And for those who know chess, the Rook piece is required for a "castling" a move that saves the King (or again, the False King) which is exactly, to me, what Ephemer did.
------
Namine - Bishop. Her action of calling Terra changed the tide drastically. However, I will place her position as debateable as there may be others who you could count as a Bishop.
Yen Sid - Bishop. He saves the wielders from the Heartless Army, ultimately saving Light from expiring making him a key player in the War. Without him they most likely would have lost the war or would have been severely weakened and incapable of winning the war.
----------
Mickey - Knight. I give Mickey Knight status due to his Last Stand where he single-handedly pushed back all of the 13 Xehanort Replicas and saved everyone. It may not be timeline altering but it is still a contribution nonetheless.
Aqua - Knight. Debateable position, however Aqua took the lead at several points in the battle and barked battle instructions, almost acting like a military general. Thus I rank her above some of the others.
------------
Roxas - Pawn. Originally a pawn to Org 13, although he went through an incredibly journey he ended up locked away back into Sora's heart and wasn't able to participate or contribute to the war or storyline until he received a Replica body and Sora's connection.
Xion - Pawn. She was used as the 13th Darkness until Sora connected with her and helped Axel remember her.
Ventus - Pawn. He contributed to the war as an Original of the 7 Lights, but he did not alter the timeline nor save the Lights from expiring, nor did he take any lead during the war thus can only be considered a Pawn piece. Not to mention, he took an enormous backseat as a character after being asleep for 11 years. As such he hasn't had much time to shine since his Union Cross days. That may change in the next Arc, especially since he has ties to the Lost Masters.
Axel/Lea - Pawn. A literal Pawn to Org 13 for most of his story until the end when he final joins the the Guardians of Light. In fact, Xemnas even makes a chess analogy when calling Axel a "pawn" during his fight against Isa and Xion.
Donald - Pawn (extension of Sora)
Goofy - Pawn (extension of Sora)
Riku Replica - Pawn (extension of Riku)
And I know many will not like this, but I place Kairi as a Pawn. The reason isn't to shoot the character down, but I believe within the story she is literally treated like a Pawn. Her entire story begins with Xehanort treating her like a Pawn to get to the Keyblade Wielder. Narratively she is only used to push the stories further, constantly getting kidnapped or harmed. Some of the other characters are debateable but I stand firmly in that Kairi is a Pawn piece and it explains why she feels lackluster. She is meant to be, it's simply her role in the KH Chess Game. This doesn’t mean she'll stay a Pawn, as the Lost Master's Arc is starting a "new" KH chess game and thus the roles of many of the chess pieces (sans Riku and Sora) will change. I believe she'll be a Bishop in the Lost Master's Arc but as of the Xehanort Saga Kairi is only a Pawn.
But if Kairi is not the Queen piece, as I'm sure many of you initially thought, then who is?
I'm sure you noticed I skipped a character. That's right: Sora. Sora is the Queen piece in this game. A Queen piece acting in the place of the King, a false king. If you know chess you know that the Queen piece can move in any direction she wants as many spaces which is exactly what Sora is and what he can do. Sora is ridiculously OP as a character to the point he is often considered the most powerful and it's the Queen piece that is the most powerful, not the King piece as some unfamiliar with chess may believe. Sora can move any which way he pleases, even traverse time, travels worlds through hearts and hearts through worlds and even moves between Realms to save Riku from Dark Aqua as a Queen piece would rush to the save the King piece. All of which is reminiscent of a Queen moving all around a board in any way.
Riku is the King piece which is why the battle in the Keyblade graveyard wasn't considered over until Riku was defeated or checkmate'd. After Riku was defeated by the Demon Tide Storm, Sora was instantly knocked off the board. Also again, he is a mirror of Yozora much like the White and Black Kings in chess mirror each other. And if we think about the King piece in chess, Riku makes the most sense. The King is the most important piece and often times Riku is the most important to the story (especially Dream Drop Distance and now post Re:Mind) hence his character development and getting more development than Sora in many ways. In the Keyblade Graveyard War, he IS the most important as its his sacrifice that changes the timeline altogether and saves Light from Expiring. Without his sacrifice, the 13 Darknesses would have won and Light would have remained expired. It doesn't get any more important than that. In addition, if the Crown Necklace theory is proven true and Sora acquired his crown necklace chain from Riku, that means Riku was the original bearer of the Crown and most likely descends from Ephemer's Royal Line (which is all but confirmed, he literally looks like Ephemer) making him make even more sense as the King Piece.
Sora and Riku are the only two who I believe will keep consistent Chess roles as the King and Queen pieces. That's what their relationship is to one another. The only change I can see is Riku and Sora themselves officially swapping roles, with Sora becoming the True King and Riku relinquishing his role as King to become Queen. Considering the way Riku rushes to save Sora and how he travels to all ends to do so (including traveling to an entirely new universe just to save him once more and traveling between dreams to become a Dream Eater to save Sora), it almost is like he is beginning to move all around the "board" and could very well be showing signs of becoming a Queen piece to protect Sora, who would then become the new King piece.
We will have to wait and see which way this chess game goes in KH4 and beyond to confirm or deny any of this theory.
Anyway, that's all I have I hope you all feel free to share your thoughts. If you have alternate Chess Rankings, please feel free to share!

Viva la vida in Latin

Did a simple fan music for Verum Rex. The hardest obstacle when making fan music for KH is the fact I’m trying to imitate Shimomura and in the end the result is absolute dogshit because I just can’t do it proper. Hence, I’m just going to make things naturally and in my own style while also trying to make my original compositions fit kh as much as I can.

seraphicai asked:  “good morning, yozora. standard system check-in as always. i am detecting some damage to your titanium plating. it worries me. please, be careful out there.”
Tumblr media
⚔️ *:・゚✧┆guardian angel / sky borne droid. ❪ unprompted! ❫
SALLOW UMBRA found a permanent residence beneath SHARP LASHES and a chromatic stare, the NOTION OF SLEEP ( or lack thereof ) failing to rid the DARK CIRCLES from Yozora’s features. DAY or NIGHT held no consequence in this SPECTRAL NECROPOLIS, the android’s greeting silently DISMISSED by the hallowed king. SOLES continued to fall soundless upon STYGIAN GRAVEL, Yozora instead taking note of the support unit’s REPORT.
DAMAGE to his titanium plating. The cyborg SUSPECTED as much, from the deluge of INKY BRUISES blooming from his ribcage– only REALISED upon exiting the SHOWER earlier that morning. ( The wide BATHHOUSE MIRRORS, sole witness and exhibiter of Yozora’s INJURIES: pale flesh an OBLIVIOUS HOST to such severe swelling. The PAIN RECEPTORS so prevalent in HUMANS, were forcibly suppressed by his CELESTIAL CORE. )

ALAS, there was only so much the COMMANDER could do about his WOUNDING: particularly when the only medical aid he could RECEIVE, was in the hands of the monsters that ‘ CREATED ’ him. Night sky instead EXPELLED a sigh– DUBIOUS as to how a machine could possibly ' WORRY ’ about his wellbeing.
❛  I’m fine.  ❜  A terse ASSERTION, the Verum Rex maintaining his STRIDE towards the next district. His vessel ached in protest.  ❛  Just give me the battle report.  ❜

Falsus Rex Sora: Worldline 1 (Part II)
The Master and Nomura may have two objectives for this new Sora.
Find the seven hearts of pure light to open Kingdom Hearts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tether Sora's heart to Kingdom Hearts.
Tumblr media
This was the original reason for the creation of Org XIII. To turn all of the members into Xehanort.
He is going to be the next Xehanort.
Tumblr media
He is "The Link to All".
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, I'm not entirely sure which Sora this last part would apply to, so this one is tentative.
ENDGAME?
Maybe once the Master took Sora's heart to copy, he took a lot(or all) of the light from Sora, allowing "Darkness" to gain a much stronger presence within Sora.
Sora's rage form comes from the powerful "darkness" he harbors inside of his heart from taking Ventus' heart into his own. If the Master copied Sora's heart, would he leave Vanitas inside of the original Sora? Maybe he can't remove the darkness from either Sora?
Maybe even turning Sora into a completely different person.
The Harbinger of Ultimate Darkness, Noctis Re:Born.
Tumblr media
But if there's an ultimate Darkness, then there must be an ultimate light to push it back and keep the balance.
I still think "Darkness" has to be the 13 shards of darkness from the original shattered X-Blade.
We already knew that the 7 lights became the pure hearts of the princesses.
But in Kh3/Remind, we learned two more things.
The powerful light of a princess is passed down onto new hearts, when the current protectors are done protecting it.
By crystallizing a heart you can preserve it,  keeping it from fading away. However, Xehanort split Kairi's heart into seven individual pieces to use as a fail-safe to summon Kingdom Hearts. This means with the extraordinary power to crystalize someone, Xehanort didn't even need the other six princesses to awaken Kingdom Hearts.
Meaning, that even one princess could be the ultimate light. Of course, having all seven hearts would be the most optimal light source regardless, but what if one princess' heart could contain all of the other pure lights?
Or, what if one already did?
Tumblr media
Kingdom Hearts grants you the power over all worlds.
Kingdom Hearts allows you the power to create a new world.
Kingdom Hearts allows you to reshape your own reality, or Unreality.
Tumblr media
You have the power to summon Kingdom Hearts all on your own(possibly).
Tumblr media
It's no wonder the Master or whomever is in charge of the Gigas wanted her so bad.

Ok I will be thinking more on this later but:
1. I believe it’s significant that Kairi is sleeping on the throne and I think it may go past her being asleep in the game.
2. Notice Kairi has memories of the other guardians. Also remember each guardian had a piece of Kairi’s heart during Re:MIND and that the feathers that compose the wings of One Heart also had memories of the guardians. Why?
3. Kairi has memories on her frames. Sora has none. Why?
4. The new DB is a jazz composition, suggesting that this game may have Kairi at the center, but the guardians in general will be important.
5. Think of the terms “Falsus Rex” and “Verum Rex”. Is there a “Falsus Regina” and a “Verum Regina”?
6. In chess, when pawns reach the end of the enemy’s side of the board, they are almost always promoted to a Queen piece.
7. The Keyblade of Heart is composed of the 7 hearts of light and can open the Door to Darkness.

I believe that the “Nameless Star’s name is Sora” theory is wrong and here’s why:
1. The Nameless Star’s name cannot be “Sora” because without doubt, I’m sure NS’ name is something that means “star” since she is “Stella” from Verum Rex.
2. Yozora is not entirely, well, Yozora. According to NS, “[Yozora’s] been changed beyond recognition–his heart replaced with another’s.” This is further confirmed with what Yozora says to Sora: “But this isn’t how I really look like. How’d you recognize me as Yozora?” And with this being the case, how would “Yozora” know about NS? Especially when NS implies that “Yozora” doesn’t know her with: “But, were [Yozora] to regain his old self again, he would be distressed by my absence.” “Yozora” not being Yozora is also heavily implied with the title of the cutscene where Sora and Yozora meet, “Falsus Rex”, which translates to “False King”.
3. Yozora isn’t looking for NS. He only appeared in the Final World by accident: “I accidentally wandered into this place, and went through some trials.”
Just my two cents.

My Brain Desperate for KH4:
Sora is not the only Falsus Rex, False King.
"Yozora" is also a False King.
Nameless star mentions that the person she's waiting for was "changed beyond recognition. His heart replaced by another's".
Tumblr media
Yozora later says that "this isn't what I really look like." Yozora is a heart in another person's body.
But if the Riku-lookalike is not Yozora, then who is he? And what does Yozora really look like?
Tumblr media
I believe that Yozora's true body looks similar to our Sora's. I think he's actually supposed to be a reflection of Sora. Which would explain why Rex thinks Sora looks like Yozora. Perhaps Rex can see Yozora's true appearance whereas Sora can not. I'm sure it'll have something to do with either the Dream World or Astral Projection or something of the sort, something that's hindering Sora's ability to see.
And the person whose body Yozora's currently in, the person who looks exactly like Riku, the person who's heart he replaced, could actually be his universe's "Sora".
We know that "Sora" is someone Yozora has "heard of". We know that he was told by Master of Master's to "save Sora" but its very possible he's heard of Sora even before that. When Sora introduces himself as "Sora", Yozora is almost offended that Sora "is using Sora's name", as if he believes our Sora has no business using the name of the Sora of his universe.
This leads me to believe that the body that Yozora is in is "Sora's". We know that the person whose body he's occupying is called "Commander" as evidenced by the Luxord-looking driver who calls him such. If Sora is someone that Yozora has heard of but may not have ever seen the face of, it leads me to believe that Sora is someone of importance like a prince, a king. In this case, a military commander. Throughout history there have been many instances where a monarch would rule and never show their face or hide behind masks, so this universe's Sora could be similar to that: a commander who doesn't show himself much if at all. And him being a high-ranking military commander (possibly even royalty) would also explain why Yozora is offended that some commoner is running around using the Commander's name.
And it would explain why the secret bad ending is titled Falsus Rex. We know there is a false king, I initially assumed it was just Sora given that Riku was the true keyblade wielder, but Yozora replacing the heart of the Verum Rex World's Commander AKA Sora would also literally make him a false king.
Now Nameless Star did say the person she's pining and waiting for is Yozora, and this could still be true. If Yozora's heart replaced Sora's, then perhaps Sora's heart replaced Yozora's. In other words, they may have switched bodies. Yozora is still the one she's waiting for and his heart "was replaced by another's", it's just that Yozora's body also has the wrong heart within it.
And that's it, that's my theory.
No wait: Maybe Yozora is nobody's body maybe he's an avatar (from a videogame) who is a blend of Yozora's real body (who may be a Sora lookalike) and whoever Riku's lookalike is.
NO WAIT UPDATE JULY 2024: If Yozora is Sora's opposite in name (Night Sky vs Sky), then Riku's opposite in name must be who his lookalike is. Maybe his name will mean "Mountain" or something, Yama? Sangaku? Or something like that!
-------------------
........I'm so sorry for these ramblings. 😭
Take everything here with 2 pounds of salt, we have no idea what will happen in KH4 and I'm most likely way off base. I'm just writing what my brain is crapping out.
I'll get back into excitement for Missing Link once the game finally drops, but I'm so ready for KH4 even more than Missing Link because I wanna see our boys again and have the Verum Rex mystery unraveled.

I had a dream the KH event started. They showed a spinoff where there was a hub world with movie posters that acted as portals to worlds and you had to go and build them. The thing is, it was all done in LEGO! The worlds included Great Mouse Detective, Tangled: The Series, Phineas and Ferb, Spider-Man 2002, people thought Toy Story since it looked like the cat from TS4 was there and it took place in lego but Winnie the Pooh was also apart of the hub, the movie posters kind of acted as his pages. There were a few more but I can't bring myself to remember them. Mickey was there with Minnie but I think Minnie was just apart of the world, similar to Mickey in Dream Drop. The idea was that everything we fought for in KH3 was safe but Minnie still needed a new castle???
The next game trailer started out saying something like "experience the origins of Yozora" (They gave him some title like Falsus Rex or something) and he was playing chess next to these pillars but he was on his own. He was going to visit La Cite Des Cloches but sounds like Dark Road, right? Well...it was a mobile game and they showed that it was *actually* a remake of all the games in Union X style. 😭 Fans were pissed and I started feeling bad for those few people who worked on them because I knew they were struggling at the end of Union X and are struggling now with DR because of so few people. But the gimmick was that at the end, there was a section dedicated to Yozora where he visited End of the World as well. There was also assumed attraction flow because we saw Big Thunder Mountain used as an icon (It wasn't Magic Mtn in my dream.) And they ended it with "Stay tuned for a sneak preview of Kingdom Hearts 4 on November 24th" which was promoting before a movie showing that day. They never said what movie but I looked it up and its a Thursday. Nothing is officially announced for that date in November yet though so I guess it's possible. But fans were also salty because they thought "So that means no KH4 footage today." But optimistic me said "They might pull that or they could just have us believe that and at the end of the show, show KH4 and the next date we see it will be the 24th."
