since i'm now on at least my fourth time watching the falsettos proshot AND i spent this afternoon watching falsettos highlights on youtube i'd like to share my underrated trina moments in act i

the entirety of four jews in a room bitching because the entire point of her in that song is that she's underrated

i see you exasperated and picking up that block furniture, trina

love is blind vocals and harmonies just thanks everyone i have been blessed

there's a moment in thrill of first love where trina has to look away and it's such a touching moment so thanks stephanie for your acting and thanks james for keeping them all onstage so i can watch a masterclass in character work and staying present

ditto with her watching jason throughout marvin at the psychiatrist

in everyone tells jason to see a psychiatrist i don't exactly know what is happening in the music but there's some sort of descent of half steps she does when she's tugging on jason's shirt and it's just beautifully executed musically and acting wise

(it's the same bit she, marvin, and jason do in harmony after the photograph which is also beautifully executed)

GET THEE TO A PSYCHIATRIST

i mean this entire song is full of brilliant choices from everyone

the little chastising gesture she does on "late for dinner late again"

i live for trina and whizzer moments and in this had better come to a stop when marvin leaves them centerstage to go back to mendel and they're just left there and whizzer is his indignant self and trina is upset and they're literally saying the same words and dealing with the same shitty behavior from marvin i'm emotional already

the cross stage push and the hand off to whizzer and the duck you know what i'm talking about

what can i even say about i'm breaking down

i know it's not underrated but i will say that i am STILL seeing new things in that song every time i watch it

this time i'd like to give a shout out to the small movements/isolations stephanie does in time with the music because i'm obsessed

there are some with the knife that are hard to catch and i still cannot believe the number of perfectly executed individual beats she squeezes into that song

the perfect housewife pose she freezes in when taking mendel's hand in jason's therapy

"i'll wait for you" and the nose scrunch and the head shake and the little steps in time as she exits

trina n the boys as background dancers for feel alright

the sweetest way jason brings her down off the block for a marriage proposal

in a tight knit family reprise i barely even hear the guys literally all i can see is trina in the back with her head against the block and it HURTS

and then when the men all line up facing her that visual does things to me

which brings me to the most underrated song which is trina's song which reaches into my chest and rips my heart out every time

except what i'm feeling is tired

i'm tired

i honestly have cried every time i've watched that song

and then she comes back in with a costume change and confidence and BELTING

i'll try TRRRRY

i'll cry

no i'll laugh

and then the men come back into the line AGAIN and then she does this little eyebrow raise to the audience as she leaves and my insides are rearranged

james lapine and stephanie j block i have some words

making a home is entirely a delight but i just want to say

"to show we read"

never clocked before that trina and whizzer are wearing very similar shirts ouch

"and he loves me so..." i just love stephanie's delivery here because yes marvin is a grade a asshole in this scene BUT she uses the line to be crueler than she needs to be which makes her that much more human, which makes the entire end of the act that much more painful

every time trina and whizzer sing the same lyrics together i'm like marvin please stop hurting the people you supposedly love

i know we're far beyond just underrated trina moments but i do have to break down from "do i love him? no" into the slap because the blocking is SO brilliant

to begin it's so clear at the "do i love him? no" (if it hasn't been already clear) that marvin is taking the breakup with whizzer out on trina

marvin goes into "i'm so dumb" and you might think he's going to leave

thus that completely silent still cross builds SO much tension and THEN he hits the arch and it and the music come crashing back into the sustained "why"

and i cannot tell if it is just the filming angle from the proshot, but there's this almost fake out with mendel where marvin sings to mendel first and then turns to whizzer and then when he's turned back to the living room it's trina there and it's straight into the distanced slap

but just the entire way whizzer is 100% part of the emotional flow of the scene, while not actually part of the living room scene, and then the build up of tension, but with no indication that it's leading to the slap, so when it comes it's truly a shock, and then the cherry on top is the choice for it not to be an actual slap, just the implication of one, which somehow stings more and catches everyone off guard

and that's how you bring a scene, nay an entire act, to a climax

*chef's kiss*

and then her little "no no no"

and then finally for act i what kills me is

"i only wanted to love and not be blamed"
