One of things I really hate about r/TESLore is that they’re so obsessed with the Kirkbridean apocrypha specifically, but also, just more generally, they’re more interested in all the metaphysical CHIM/36 Lessons of Vivec/Kalpas/Towers/Metaphysical Bullshit, which for me, is the least interesting part of the games.
I want to talk the politics, the history, the cultures, the peoples, the events, the stuff that happened. The way the books represent a flawed in-universe perspective, the way all the narrators are unreliable or likely presenting incomplete information (Vivec, for instance, is obviously a liar and a half and should be taken with many grains of salt), etc. I’m interested in discussing that shit.
I only care about the Aedra/Daedra/Et’Ada/Etc to the extent that they interface with mortals and mortal politics and affairs, and the way in which the men/mer/beast races/etc worship them. The cults, how they interact, how they draw on the spheres of their patrons and focus on some parts over others, or seemingly distort their patron(s) spheres and principles (insofar as they have any) in pursuit of their worldly goals.
But r/TESLore just doesn’t seem to care about that that much.
Also, they always reach for the more complicated seven-layer-dip-of-crazy answer rather than just ‘one of these two sources is probably lying’.

Who is Butch's dad???
The biggest mystery of Vault 101 to me if the fact no one knows who Butch’s dad is, not even him, and Ellen was never married. According to the official Fallout 3 guide, the reason Butch acts out and is an overall terrible person is because his mother being an alcoholic and his lack of a father pushes him to be rebellious. Seeing the Lone Wanderer with perhaps the only caring dad in the vault may be why he targets them the most.
My theories are:
1) The Overseer. This one is far fetched, I know; but it is interesting to consider. If he is Butch’s father, it would make sense for him to enable Ellen’s alcoholism to keep her from sharing Butch’s father. Who would believe the vault drunk? Him employing the Tunnel Snakes may be to keep a close eye on Butch. However, considering the vault canonically has abortion pills according to voice lines, he would probably have Ellen flush out a pregnancy to avoid scandal.
2) Allen Mack. To be honest, everyone is related to the Mack family for some reason so let me throw him into the ring. This has some gross implications though; considering Susie refers to Butch as “dreamy” and Christine (who is a cousin to the Macks) “puts out,” I would like to wipe this one off the table all together. Also, Allen seems to love his wife Gloria very much, seeing how his personality completely switches after she dies.
3) A wastelander. This one is my favorite. If we take Butch’s birthday from this wiki at face value, he was born at the tail end of 2257, meaning he was conceived in February of 2257 give or take. If Alphonse closed the vault doors in 2257 or 2258, Ellen could have been one of the vault dwellers who made a trip to the wasteland beforehand. It could be plausible she met a wastelander, fell in love, Butch was conceived, and the vault doors were closed before or shortly after he was born. The loss of her love could have sparked her alcoholism, and again, if she says anything about the vault once being open, who would trust the vault drunk?
This is so interesting to me, especially since it was never touched on in the game. Maybe there's some tension in the vault from women who don't trust there husbands, wondering if their partner could be the father of Ellen's child, especially because she's regarded as a "fading beauty."
I almost posted this on /r/falloutlore before I read that speculation was against the rules :P oh well

NCR doesn’t use cars… really? Then why:
Then why exactly would New Reno have a chopshop if nobody drove cars. And then supposedly the NCR doesn't use vehicles in NV? (Despite the fact there are military vehicles, albeit with flat tires, in NCR locations that wouldn't normally have military vehicles in them without the NCR.)
Also at 180 trading outpost there’s a “random” military truck next to that lady that sells ammo.
The people on the r/falloutlore are stupid as hell. ALSO Josh Sawyer the guy that said there’s no cars literally DOES NOT know the lore as well as y’all think he does. Avellone stated there’s cars and npcs state there’s factories. Two things Josh said contradictory statements about.

of course "fallout lore" means nerds arguing about a nonexistent body of canon forever. i should have known. obviously i'm the asshole

wow, /r/falloutlore sounds awful and joyless
/r/falloutlore is probably the worst subreddit because every discussion there is like, the opposite of worldbuilding. It’s worldunbuilding. There was a post that was like “how do wastelanders know how old they are?” and all the responses were something along the lines of “well The Lore never explicitly states that people use calendars, so most rural [read: uneducated] wastelanders probably have no idea what year it is or how old they are. The ones who have computers know everything perfectly because computers have internal clocks :)”.
Like, ignoring how insanely and disgustingly classist that is, it doesn’t even make sense? A lot of wastelanders are farmers, who have to know what season it is in order to know when to sow, when to plant, and when to harvest. Most early civilizations would develop some sort of calendar shortly after agriculture as the necessary next step.
And then, from there, you could speculate about post-war harvest celebrations. How do wastelanders celebrate the end of the harvest season? What sort of rudimentary holidays do they celebrate? We know that Diamond City celebrates Christmas and Halloween, what other old-world holidays are celebrated? There’s so much speculative worldbuilding you could do but they insist on stopping at “akshually The Lore doesn’t say that they have calendars so I don’t think they do :)”

I'm still catching up in terms of having art to post since my finals have been crazy, so I wanted to post some of my old previous monthly patreon art from this year! Back in July my patrons voted for me to draw something Fallout: New Vegas themed, so I (obviously) had to go with the NCR ranger. And yes, yes I imagine it is Ranger Tanner under that armor.⠀ •⠀ •⠀ •⠀ •⠀ •⠀ #dtdraws #characterdesign #fallout #falloutnewvegas #videogamefanart #videogame #postapocalyptic #falloutncr #ncrranger #falloutlore #rangertanner #bethesda (at Lancaster, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIWBCUulaxI/?igshid=7dc31tokoqe5

Drawing in preparation for @rubberpassione Fallout 76 inspired cap commission. The Wendigo is an evil spirited mythical creature in (certain) Native American mythology, who is bloodthirsty, cannibalistic and possesses an insatiable lust for flesh. In a non-spiritual view it can be seen as a metaphorical embodiment of the depths of depravity caused by bleak winter famines that may lead people to cannibalise each other in order to survive. Serving as a sort of warning if that line is crossed. Yet since it appears in a coal mine in a brilliant franchise of post-apocalypse survival games, it makes me think of the ravishing nature of power and greed within the industrial society; perhaps serving as a reminder of what would be unleashed if the bombs really did drop one day, or any other industrial threat to life on Earth. It reminds me of this, a speech by Calgacus, leader of the Caledonian Confederacy (of ‘pagan’ tribes against The Romans) “These plunderers of the world, after exhausting the land by their devastations, are rifling the ocean: stimulated by avarice, if their enemy be rich; by ambition, if poor; unsatiated by the East and by the West: the only people who behold wealth and indigence with equal avidity. To ravage, to slaughter, to usurp under false titles, they call empire; and where they make a desert, they call it peace.” In my mind the Wendigo is the literal spiritual embodiment of that destructive greed. Check yourself before you wreck yourself :) (P.s. Tacitus famously paraphrased that quote, Tacitus being one of the eye witnesses of Christ’s crucifixion by the Romans. And I heard the quote via Dan Carlin who is great.) #nocap #cap #fallout76 #wendigo #earlewilliams #falloutlore #crustyfashion #pencildrawing #hb #staedler #design #paintingprep #illustration #streetwear #gamergirl #gamergear #nuclearapocalypse #desolation #depravity #postapocalypse #wasteland (at The Wastelands) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXdztwYtVdf/?utm_medium=tumblr
