Is your MacCready's affinity glitched?

Are you worried about this glitch and dead-set on romancing him?? Well then, friend, I have some tips for you!

I noticed several posts about this in his tags as people have been coming back to the game (or playing for the first time, welcome!). As someone with several thousand hours in this game, who maxes MacCready in every play through, here is what I have learned (I will try not to spoil anything about his quest or story in this):

-This glitch does not occur completely randomly. It is more likely to occur under certain conditions. As his affinity is raised he will ask you to do two major things for him. Until you do these things his affinity with you will be capped. If you hit this cap before completing the current quest objective you are more likely to encounter this glitch. The longer you let it go, the greater the chance that he will break.

How to avoid this glitch: At 25% affinity he will have his first conversation with you, and give you the first quest objective. At this point, his affinity with you will be capped at 49.9%. If you are getting close to the cap (about 40%) you must either do the quest immediately, or leave him at home for awhile (or somewhere he won't get any passive affinity gains like wearing power armor near him).

At 50% he'll give you another dialogue, and his affinity cap will be raised to 75%. At about 75% he will give you a second quest objective and his cap will be raised to 99.9%. Again, make sure to do the quest before you reach the new affinity cap. After that quest concludes, you should be able to gain affinity freely and he'll do his final talk at 100% (The cap is actually maxed at 110%, but 100 is the final threshold)

This is much easier to keep tabs on if you have a mod like Visible Companion Affinity (Which I believe is available on console and PC).

How to fix this glitch if you have it: Unfortunately, console commands will not work. The only reliable method for fixing this glitch is to load a previous save from before you reached whichever affinity level cap you got stuck at, and finish his quest objective asap.

So, I've seen a few posts lately that highlight Deacon's habit of ending up in just his undies...

I've been sitting on this for a little while...But I think it's time...

I use this nifty little mod called 'Liga of my Companions' (by far the best multi-follower mod out there!)

One feature is the companions can dress themselves...which is great! They go home and change into some casuals... Put on their armor when we're in combat zones, etc...But it can be a little glitchy at times.

I can no longer bring myself to use this feature.😳

Cards on the table. I like to use 'Enhanced Vanilla Bodies.' and not NeverNude...(Certain mods call for such a thing...it is just weird to bathe in your underpants, okay! 😜 CWSS for working bathroom fixtures btw.)

So, I'm running with Mac and Deeks, and suddenly, the pair of them started stripping...like full-on terrorizing enemies by charging at them with their 'assets' on full display. (body slamming enemies, leaping over obstacles...running out of bullets, and fist fighting instead of using their weapons...because I kept forgetting to turn on infinite ammo for them)

So here I am, chasing them around and yelling: "Deacon! Put your pants back on...oh, for f@#k sake Mac, not again!" Because after they did it once, they just kinda ran with it...They'd also be standing there with big grins, which is just normal companion behavior, but I dunno.

This time, it felt personal...

Guys...My fugging mum was watching me play...😱

She, of course, thought this was hilarious, and I guess I must have too considering how much my cheeks hurt from laughing.

I think my man walked in at one point, then walked right back out again once he realized what we were in hysterics about.

I am still not sure if that has been our weirdest mother/daughter moment, but it is definitely up there 🤣🤣🤣

(Mum's where I get most of my weirdness from, and my love for gaming. She spends her evenings playing FO76 or COD online...so she's a bit awesome. I'm not gonna lie!)

Note: I did eventually get it working properly, and actually stopped using the "dress yourself" feature because they are like toddlers dressing themselves!

They come up with some weird combinations....hmmm maybe I should give them a bunch of stuff and see what they come up with to illustrate my point some time 🤣🤣🤣

Oh my God, my heart!! 😭😭😭

So, old news I am sure, but there is a glitch in Fallout 4 to where Hancock is deemed nonessential once you dismiss him from your party. He can legit die out in the wilds, but also back in settlements if he’s left alone. Two places I saw were Sanctuary and the Slog, but it typically happens after reaching max affinity. Here’s a video of one such case:

I can only come to the conclusion that—EVEN THOUGH IT IS UNINTENTIONAL— Hancock is not only a drug addict, but suicidal.

The way the dialogue is set up for it to be his deathline (one … last … trip…) sounds so much like an overdose it’s unreal. The fact this can happen when you are romancing him just screams abandonment issues and heartbreak. You left him behind and baby boy got so sad he offed himself by taking too many chems.

Not only is this glitch insane, but his backstory being so heartbreaking only adds fuel to the headcanon fire. I bet he feels so lost and without a place in the world. His companion dialogue continuously reminds SS of how important he/she is to Hancock, and that “I’ve got you—” what more could he possibly need?

AND THEN YOU RUN OFF WITH SOME OTHER GIRL/GUY/ROBOT/SYNTH/SUPER MUTANT and leave him. 😭😭😭

When he says “Suit yourself,” when you tell him “not now,” he sounds so testy. He’s low key jealous and HURTING ya’ll!!
