My Brief Love Affair in the Falling Snow

Four years have passed since my very short love affair.

In the dark days of the pandemic, in the days when we all wore masks and kept our distance from each other, I was walking down Jackson Boulevard on a cold January morning. Large snowflakes were drifting down lazily from a gray sky. I saw a bright blue car turn the corner and park along the north side of the street. The driver climbed out and walked to the passenger door, then reached in to take something from the seat. Preoccupied, she didn't see me. When I was ten feet away, I said, "Excuse me. Did you realize you're parked the wrong way? This is a one way street."

She looked up, surprised, and it suddenly dawned on her that all the other cars were facing the other direction. "Oh my god! I'm so stupid!" She wore a thick winter coat, and the lower half of her face was covered with a mask. But I could see her hair, long and thick and dark, and her eyes... her eyes were large and deep brown and very beautiful. Her voice was gentle and sweet and musical. "Thank you!" she said.

I was smiling beneath my mask. "No problem," I said, and I kept walking. I didn't turn to look at her, even though I wanted to. Her tall, masked hero in a black leather jacket, I walked away in the falling snow, exquisitely happy.

"Thank you so much!" she called again, and I suppose that she got into her car and circled the block to park facing the correct direction.

I knew that I would never see her again.

Now that our affair has ended, I wonder if she remembers me? Deep down I know the answer.
