Elrond and Celebrimbor headcanons
I have so many feels about these two during the second age and I thought I’d inflict some of the pain onto you
Their shared family history is so fascinating. They’re completely opposite in some ways yet so similar in others. We have Celebrimbor only grandchild of Feanor, possibly the most infamous person in all of Arda. He’s the son of Curufin, the son of Feanor generally considered most similar to his father. He’s the second in line to the house of Feanor and very much considered part of it. He then spends large parts of his life trying to distance himself from all of it after recognising how morally awful his family legacy is.
And then there’s Elrond. He’s the heir to all that have the most reason to despise the Feanorians and all they stand for. His father is Nolofinwean on the Elvish side, his mother Sinda and Teleri and his own childhood home was sacked by Feanorians at age 6 before being essentially kidnapped. Yet despite all this he still claims Maglor and Maedhros as his parents. He still chooses this heritage as part of who he is even if most people would disagree with him about it.
Like that already sets them up for a super complicated relationship already. Just imagine Celebrimbor seeing Elrond for the first time during the War of Wrath wearing a star of Feanor. Imagine them forming a bond over the shared trauma of being raised by people everyone sees as soulless monsters. Maybe Elrond’s openness about his love for Maglor and Maedhros finally makes Tyelpe feel he can acknowledge his heritage again. Only in small ways, he hasn’t forgiven them yet, but he feels like he is allowed to have more complicated views on the subject than just hating them outright. He probably develops a very protective attitude over him pretty quickly as he just can’t believe such a genuinely good and kind ray of sunshine could want to be publicly associated with him and his insane relatives without even having a blood relation.
They understand and recognise characteristics in each other that no one else would. They know how exactly what the other needs when they’re going through something and don’t even need to speak to communicate that they’re having a difficulty. After Elros dies Tyelpe is the first person to hold Elrond while he grieves over it and neither ever forget it. They also have the darkest sense of humour that everyone else finds too much and their banter freaks out anyone who overhears. After a while they decide on the label of cousins. They never go into what kind of cousins or through who they just leave it ambiguous to avoid complications.
I think their relationship deteriorated during the Annatar incident. Elrond knows something is up with Annatar the first time he meets him in Lindon and he convinces Gil Galad to send him away immediately. Gil Galad doesn’t take much convincing he doesn’t strike him as trustworthy either and whenever Galadriel and Elrond seem to agree it’s generally a good idea to listen to them. And then he hears Annatar is in Eregion.
On his next visit he is hostile to Annatar the whole time and it sets Tyelpe on edge. He’s never imagined his sweet cousin could be so unpleasant towards one of his dearest *friends* while staying in his house. The look in his eyes reminds Tyelpe too much of the look his Maedhros would get sometimes. Elrond is freaking out the whole time because something is off! How can no one else see how messes up this guy’s aura is? It’s taking all his willpower not to go full Melian on the spot, all this guys energy is so absolutely wrong!
It culminates and they get into an Arguement. Tyelpe is convinced Elrond’s trauma and problematic role models are finally getting to him and he’s started seeing the enemies where there are none, just like his uncles did. Celebrimbor knows what paranoia looks like and he swore to himself never too become like that. Elrond just knows something is about to go terribly wrong and he needs to stop it but Celebrimbor won’t listen to him. Tyelpe had alway trusted his counsel up to now and he takes this new unwillingness to hear him out as further signs of manipulation. This gets very intense with Celebrimbor saying that Elrond was corrupted by his upbringing but it is past the point of no return when Elrond compares his blindness to that of Feanor. When Elrond draws his sword at Annatar after he sees him the next day Tyelpe tells him to leave. That’s the last time they see each other.
Several decades later Gil Galad receives a letter with Vilya enclosed in it. They know something must be very wrong for him to open the channels of communication after so many years of silence and Elrond convinces Gil Galad to let him head to Eregion at once. Eventually he relents despite his worry for Elrond’s well being and desire to accompany him himself, on the condition that Elrond brings Glorfindel with him. When Elrond arrives he is greeted be the sight of Tyelpe’s body being used as a banner.
He fights like a force more than a person, scarcely recognisable and slaying without effort or thought simply on pure instinct and raw power, all the drills he’d ever completed flowing entirely naturally. Eventually he recovers the corpse or what is left of it. He manages to lead his soldiers to retreat in what would become Imladris. When Glorfindel finds him he sees him cradling the body and knows not to speak. He helps him dig a grave and watches as he cleanses the blood from Celebrimbor’s wounds before laying him gently down. He never tells any save Galadriel and Gil Galad where he is buried for fear of vandals. He tells his children of Tyelpe’s kindness, his perseverance and desire to do good and help others no matter what.

Agreed on all of this except calling him pathetic - while he is a shell of himself towards the end, he was also a victim of horrific abuse and torture, and people who go through that are incredibly strong.
On another note, Charles Edwards and Charlie Vickers are incredible actors and I am so glad they did Celebrimbor's story justice.
Now that I've finished watching Rings of Power Season 2, I have to say they were right to cast Celebrimbor as an actor who looked older than most of the other elves. People will point out that in canon, he was younger than Galadriel. At first, I didn't really get why they changed that for the show. Was it just for variety? Some other reason?
Well, after finishing the season, I think it's safe to say the reason was thematic.
The tragedy of Celebrimbor is so much greater when he visually reads older to the audience. Here is a man at the absolute pinnacle of his craft. His name is legend. He built an entire city around his forge. He has a talent so rare that Sauron needed him for conquest. If he had been cast as a younger actor, even if he was 1500+ in Elven years or something, his story would read as a naive youth seduced by power. It's so much more poignant and tragic to see the legacy of a master of his craft destroyed along with the man.
Watching fantasy is a different experience to reading fantasy, especially with wacky elf ages. The LoTR movies knew this, which is why Hugo Weaving (39) was old enough to convincingly play Liv Tyler's (22) father even though Elrond probably still looked similar to his daughter's age in the books. It's so it doesn't feel weird for the audience and they don't lose suspension of disbelief.
Episode 8 of S2 (and the episodes that precede it) really hammer home that Celebrimbor's undoing isn't just a win for Sauron - this is a loss for elvenkind. Elrond's utter horror at watching Celebrimbor's written legacy being burned to ash was a brilliant storytelling choice. More was lost at the Fall of Eregion than Elvish lives or a weapon in their enemy's hand. They lost the work of a master - the kind of person who comes around once in an age, if that.
What's more, they didn't just lose Celebrimbor. Sauron destroyed him from the inside, eating away at him until he was a pathetic shell of himself. He tried very hard to turn Celebrimbor from celebrated master to a man corrupted by darkness - both in reality and in reputation. But he resisted with what strength he had left. And his kin saw the truth before he died.
All of this was heightened by Celebrimbor being played by a man older than most of the other elf actors. It was a visual signal of his position of respect and wisdom, regardless of his actual age. That was his position in Elvish society that was efficiently shown by aging him up.
You might not always agree with what the minds behind Rings of Power are doing with their story. But after this season, I trust they do have their reasons and will be eagerly awaiting season 3.

Bartender: Hey, man, how's it going?
Me: Yeah, you know, it's good. Just thinking about how Gil Galad's kingship was haunted by Elrond. Like his first great failure after being crowned when he'd barely come of age was showing up too late to stop the destruction of Sirion. How he probably felt a deep personal responsibility to find Elwing's missing boys at least but couldn't even do that. Like, I know he probably got redirected by Cirdan toward all those refugees and stuff, but he probably really wanted a win, especially because he was kinda orphaned by then himself and knew how cruel fate was to the sons of greater destiny. Like all his family who'd been king before him died, like, horrifically? And then when Elrond returns all fine and he comes to Lindon and he's chosen the fate of the elves, Gil Galad's physically haunted by him again. See, but this time he chooses to be haunted by Elrond. Because I think he wants to fix what he sees as his first great failure by restoring a bright future for this kid which was robbed from him when Sirion fell--and it's probably like he wants better for him than what he got, too, because he got this kingship in exile thrust upon him when all he was doing was hanging out with Cirdan making ships or something with the other non-combatants and refugees like he and his mother who were fleeing war and violence and he was like fourth in line to the throne so he probably found out in one fell swoop that all his family's dead and oh, you're king and your destiny's out of your hands. So he's like, I'll make Elrond herald and give him all the experience and guidance on this leadership stuff I never got while also giving him better control of what kind of future he has. Then--get this--he never even marries or has kids and when his reign is coming to an end. . . Which, by the way, he probably foresaw his own death which is fucked-- because he gives Elrond his ring before the war of the last alliance, metaphorically making him his heir and also giving him the opportunity to shape his future. . .Yeah, yeah, cause Elrond wouldn't have been considered suitable to be a lord or a king or anything after he was raised by wolves the sons of Feanor. So when Gil made him herald it was like helping him gain political experience and any status he lost. So anyway, then Gil Galad dies, but in some ways he's spent a greater part of his life dedicated to the act of restoring Elrond to the path he should have been on in an alternate reality where he was raised as Earendil and Elwing's son and like correcting that first failure--but also changing Elrond's fate because Elrond has the ring, like, he literally has Gil Galad's legacy and power in his hands, something he wouldn't have had (or needed?) before. But he decides he won't be king. He'll use that power to guard the place that fulfills the legacies of both him and Gil Galad. He's rebuilt the home he lost, something Gil Galad was trying to give him, and then he makes it a place for all the orphans and the wounded and the refugees--like he even fosters a bunch of future orphan kings and like--
Bartender: Like the ending of Hamilton?
Me: *mumbling into my empty glass* Yeah, exactly like the ending of Hamilton.
#elrond#gil galad#i'm afraid to tag this anything else lol but anyway!!!#I have about 18 more pages of thought about this which is far more articulate#like how Elrond probably both appreciated and resented being made herald at first because he was grateful#to be given a role and was interested in playing a part in things but he would have been sooooo visibile#and people would have so many opinions and thoughts about him after he returned and he's just standing there to be stared at#and Ereinion knows exactly what that's like because that's him#the shared fate of the sons of greater destinies#they don't have a choice of whether or not to be looked at or judged and they rarely get to shape their own stories#oh and something something Elrond arriving too late to stop the fall of Eregion in his first great test#Also I'm entirely bullshitting with what I remember from the timeline so misinformation warning ?? lol#Anyway Gil Galad and his tragic beautiful fantastic reign has my entire heart#the king who stepped up the king who was probably more comfortable on the battlefield than the throne room but who always did his duty#to the very last#Tolkien i'm in your walls

Things that live rent-free in my head forever: the near 100 years between Sauron trying and failing to enslave the Eregion elves with the One Ring and the actual invasion of Eregion.
What were Sauron and Celebrimbor doing besides building up their armies during all that time? Did they keep exchanging angry and passive-aggressive letters to each other?
#celebrimbor#sauron#silmarillion#silvergifting#truly the most aggressively divorced couple in tolkien lore#silm canon you will always be famous l#praying for a proper Fall of Eregion adaptation one day l#there's so much great potential and things to explore in tht 500 year timeline l

I have a question. Today's was the second episode we got that was named after one of the lines referencing the rings - the ones specifically important for that episode, of course.
Does this mean in this season we are going to get something like Doomed to Die? Or To Rule them All? In the Darkness?
Because if Doomed to Die, or any title with the word Doom, is the title of the episode of the Fall of Eregion and Celebrimbor's death, I'm going to unironically lose my mind, and not in the fun way. In the Eternal Despair way.
In case you are confused: the Doom (of Mandos) was a huge thing back before the Sun and Moon were created, post-Darkening and, among other things, said a bunch of elves would end up dying in terrible ways - Yet slain ye may be, and slain ye shall be: by weapon and by torment and by grief.
Additionally, in case someone needed to review it, I'm putting the Rings' poem under the cut.
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men, doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
#silm references in lord of the rings#no way that line of the poem wasn't intentional#considering elven history#doom of mandos#the rings poem#celebrimbor#2x01 elven kings under the sky#2x05 halls of stone#rings sof power#theory? is this a theory? maybe?#fall of eregion#creation requires sacrifice#tolkien gave me life#silmarillion references in the lord of the rings#jjr tolkien

TRoP Season Finale spoilers under the cut
Fuck this show.
If this was fanfic I'd gobble it the fuck up but these people are writing official Tolkien stuff. Half-assed bluster poetics ain't really gonna cut it for me even though I'm not a Tolkien purist.
Rest in peace Adar, you would've loved the Tragedy of Julius Caesar (not)
#never for a moment have i been a hater but#they try even if clumsily build up sympathy for the orcs through Glúg and through their loyalty to Adar#only for them to turn coat OFF SCREEN?#like yeah orcs will orc I'm not mad about them betraying him but HOW they betrayed him#like you give us a really cool concept of Nenya healing Adar's very soul the moment before you kill him off?#why tf was Adar in the forest anyway why not enter Eregion to execute Sauron on the spot?#he HAD to lose at one point I ain't delulu but this death wasn't poetic to me it was just a waste#like I see the semblance of logic in everything the writers do but it all falls so flat#like Adar had this big powerful moment at the end of ep 7 only for him to be Julius Caesar-d by GLÚG of all people?#there were signs but honestly#Glúg choosing fucking Sauron because he was mad at Adar trying to protect HIM and all the Uruks like#what was the point of Glúg then it's like they couldn't make up their fucking minds about whether orcs can be capable of redemption or not#and don't get me started on the Balrog getting like 30 seconds after they've been teasing it all season and even the season 1#or that Isidul the most crucial CANON character to the story didn't do shit all season aside from homewrecking lol#also Arondir is fine??? Apparently??? Like completely fine???#and the whole Rhún sequence was just filler in the end too#bruh#i've never been a hater before to anything and yeah there IS bias on my part regarding Adar but#irrelevant things are given depth and actually interesting narratives are left shallow and just crumble under all the flawed logic#mist mumbles#mist rants and raves
