I cannot believe I'm saying this but I just argued with someone who was insisting that Dick is abusive and cruel to his family and friends while excusing Jason's actions as "the pit did it". Sleeping Headcanons

Headcanons you say? Let's get into it!

Warnings: mental health, drugs/alcohol

We spend nearly half of our lives asleep, and the boys are no different! They're a little backwards, being basically nocturnal, but they sleep (and struggle to), just like anybody else.

Leo

Bed. Leo is a traditionalist and sleeps on a firm Japanese Futon. He sleeps on his plastron because that's the most practical. He's usually on his side, hugging a pillow, by morning.

Temperament. Even as always, unless he has a migraine, then he's in his room the second he gets home. Dark and quiet. If someone disturbs him, he'll get up and address whatever it is that needs seeing to, but don't expect conversation. However, he *is* a morning person! They all hate him until about 10 am.

Routine. If he has a headache he'll usually have no choice but to just lay down the second he's off the clock. If he doesn't, he has a very strict routine that is *always* adhered to, or he can't sleep (no, that's not a joke):

Tea (usually jasmine) with Dad while processing the day.

Shower.

Teeth.

Undress.

Meditate for 30 minutes.

Sleep.

The morning is much the same but in reverse:

Wake up.

Meditate for 15 minutes.

Get dressed.

Downstairs for coffee/breakfast/discussing the day with Dad.

Training.

Sleeping with a partner. Having someone around to upset his routine is ROUGH. Don't ask to sleep in his bed. Seriously, don't. Sharing *his space* is a HUGE step for him and if you push it, it'll just take longer. He'll start small, inviting you into his room for tea. Be PATIENT with the boy. Once you start sleeping in his bed it'll take him a while to get used to it. The first few times he doesn't sleep. But eventually, you worm your way into his routine, and he can't sleep without you. Until then, he will happily hold you until you fall asleep, even stay watching over you until morning. But he won't sleep.

Mikey

Bed. Pillow pile! He started collecting pillows as a kid to add to his hoard, which is now comically large and takes up 1/3 of his room. He loves the weird ones and has ones with tassles and beads and insane shapes. It's actually pretty impressive and could probably double as a modern art piece!

Temperament. It's all good! No matter what state he's in, he's always the life of the party. Always.

Routine. He's usually parked in front of the TV until everyone disperses (video games/tv/ect). Then, depending on how hard his depression is hitting that night, he'll either grab a bong (hard) or a bottle (harder). He'll drink in his room , but he'll skate down one of the south tunnels to smoke because he doesn't want to hear about it from Leo. Splinter knows about the weed, but doesn't have a problem with it, because it really does seem to help. He would, however, have a problem with the liquor. Once Mike is thoroughly gone, he tosses himself on his pillow pile and attempts to pass out. Sometimes he does. He gets hangovers from the alcohol, but the second he wakes up that mask is firmly back in place and he's good to go! 😃

Sleeping with a partner. ALL. THE. CUDDLES. Expect him not to let go. Like, pee beforehand. He may not be as big as his brothers, but he's still pretty damn heavy. You are HIS Angel. You are HIS miracle. And you aren't going ANYwhere. Lots of nuzzling/scent marking, LOTS of churring, and when he does eventually fall asleep, he snores like a diesel engine. Just poke him in the side and he'll shut up.

Don

Bed. What's a bed? You mean the cot in his lab? On the rare occasion that *someone* convinces him to actually sleep in a bed, it's pretty much whatever bed or bed-adjacent thing they bring him to. By the time he's tired enough that he can be convinced, he's too far gone to care.

Temperament. When Donnie is tired, expect to be snapped at. He'll apologize immediately, but his temper is a hair trigger when he needs sleep. And my dude goes until he stops. Don's body wakes up before he does. Expect mumbled one-word answers that may or may not make sense as he gradually comes to consciousness over the next half-hour.

Routine. Donnie doesn't make the decision to go to bed. He just wakes up and it's later. When he does wake up, his body has been conditioned to perform all the necessary morning tasks without him having to actually be fully conscious. Sit up. Grab freshly brewed espresso from desk next to cot. Shotgun espresso. Wrap joints. Stand up. Go to kitchen for second cup of coffee (because Raph has already brewed a pot, and because at some point in his teenage years, his father insisted on seeing him at least once a day). Make/drink coffee. Eat the closest edible thing. Go back to the lab. By this point, his conscious mind has usually kicked in and he can get back to work.

Sleeping with a partner. I hope you like to be lulled to sleep by computer fans! You'll get used to the phrase, "go and lie down, Dove. I'll just be a minute." It's always a lie. You know it. He knows it. The wall of computer towers behind you knows it. But he does the song and dance, anyway, because he thinks it makes you feel better. It doesn't. If he does happen to fall asleep with you, of COURSE he's the big spoon. He wraps himself around you and holds you as close as he can (he's still working on getting past all those pesky air molecules), with his beak buried in your hair so that he can breathe you in as he falls asleep (at least the air molecules are good for something).

Raph

Bed. My guy is BIG, and needs a ton of support. A traditional flat mattress is uncomfortable unless he sleeps on his plastron which he HATES doing. His carapace is HEAVY, and it feels like he's literally being crushed under his own weight. Besides, he's in enough pain when he wakes up, and as much as he loves working out, he really doesn't want to have to do pushups first thing in the morning. Instead, he has a carbon fiber hammock that he wove himself. It hangs from a reach stacker arm modified with two lifting jacks bolted to the floor, all "liberated" from the shipyard. It supports all of him with the added benefit of pressure on all sides due to his weight, which helps him sleep, especially when he's in a low.

Temperament. When he's tired he's a grump. He's not quick to anger, but expect a lot of grumbling and begrudging acquiescence to things. He doesn't usually push it too far before heading to bed, because let's face it, pain is exhausting, and if he's laying down he's not having to hold himself up. He's not a "morning person," but he's usually okay as long as he knows there's a cup of coffee in his near future.

Routine. Pretty standard. Shower, teeth, etc. Once in bed, he'll mess around on his phone for a while, watching movies/tv/anime, before eventually falling asleep. In the morning, he rolls out of his hammock and heads to the kitchen for coffee with his Dad before everyone else emerges. After that it's his morning workout and he starts the day. Honestly the mostly boring/normal out of all of them.

Sleeping with a partner. He won't sleep in your bed. He just won't. Don't ask. He'll hold you until you fall asleep, no question, but he won't stay. The only hope for a sleepover is at his place. He likes to give you a big hug around the middle and roll into the hammock with you, and it always leaves you giggling as you snuggle up against his plastron. That's when he sleeps best, with you laying on his chest, his arm wrapped around you. Not only is it added pressure, but this way he knows you're safe.

They were both overlapped in Minnesota for the North Tartan Summer Jam-June 2016. They had a lot of basketball overlap in June/July 2016 but again, separate age groups, with Azzi playing in a higher age group than Paige.

USA U16 Trials in May 2017 when they met.

Won Gold together with U16 on June 11, 2017.

Flew to Minnesota together where Azzi probably spent the summer doing her camping and State Fair in August 2017. Before this though: they participated in the North Tartan Summer Jam-June 2017 but different groups. I think that first birthday post from Azzi is probably from this tournament. Also, they may have also had an EYBL tournament in Indianapolis in July 2017. This is also when those crush snapchats were most likely sent because the song itself was released July 7, 2017.

Generally, they always have a lot of overlap in the summer because of AAU

Their visit to Maryland, Notre Dame and UConn in Fall 2017. Offered scholarships by UConn at that time.

Azzi and Paige were together at the beginning of Feb, training. Azzi's high school is WCAC Champs at the end of Feb 2018 and Azzi was also player of the year as a Freshman.

Late March 2018, both participated in the 2018 USA Basketball 3x3 U18 National Championship. Paige’s team got first, and Azzi’s got second. Paige’s team went on to rep in the youth Olympics.

April 2, 2018 Paige and her Hopkins teammates watched the UConn Notre Dame 2018 Championship game. Paige apparently watched this match up twice by April 2019 and Azzi watched the 12/3/17 game against ND in Hartford. Maybe overlap?

Paige and Azzi played in the Nike Boo Williams Invitational for their separate AAU teams in Virginia on April 20-22, 2018. Azzi's team (Fairfax Stars 17s EYBL) won platinum undefeated in their division where she stood out as one of the best players at 15 years old. Paige's team (North Tartan 15s EYBL) won platinum undefeated in her division. Geno was apparently at this tournament from what I read.

Paige was in DC to play in the Capitol Classic on April 28, 2018. You can watch the entire game if you want.

Reunited in Colorado May 2018 for USA trials.

The 11th annual North Tartan Summer Jam in Hopkins Minnesota was held June 15-17, 2018, where both Paige and Azzi's AAU teams played against each other. Paige’s team beat Azzi’s team 79-63 but both ended with a 3-1 record with Paige's team getting second place. Azzi watched Paige's final game.

Basically, together all of July because training was July 4-20, with a pre-tournament invitational in Latvia. Afterwards, won Gold with U17 on July 29, 2018.

Azzi attends her first Curry Camp in August 6-7 2018. She blows up after the three point contest. At this point I also assume Minnesota cabin trip and state fair was spent together. Azzi was recognized while on a cruise with Bueckers family after the contest (Date unknown but assuming summer). Azzi also helped with Paige's charity clinic at the end of August in Montana.

Azzi and her family were also in Minnesota for a family wedding in September 2018.

11/2/18 Visit to UConn together. Azzi’s sweet 16 on 11/11/18. We know Paige was there.

March 2019 Azzi is presented Gatorade National Player of the Year for Basketball. Azzi's team is 2nd in the nation.

Paige wins state championship on March 16, 2019. Azzi is there supporting (she's in that day after vlog episode of Paige's teammate wearing her St. Patty's day necklace and referred to as National POY which she just got beforehand).

Both of them flew to Montana and I'm guessing that's when the Yellowstone trip happened. Probably Spring Break.

April 1, 2019, Paige commits to UConn (signs letter of intent in November 2019). I think this is also the day Azzi got her puppy Stewie.

April 4-6, 2019 Azzi’s high school team makes the Geico Nationals final but loses. Not sure if Paige was there.

April 13, 2019 Azzi tears hear ACL/MCL at USA 3x3 championship. Surgery on May 29, 2019 in Indianapolis. Paige was with her before surgery (video proof from Azzi herself).

April 26-28, 2019 AAU together (Azzi not playing).

June 2019 – Paige participates in Summer Jam 2019 with Metro Stars.

July/August 2019 – After Azzi attends the ESPYS and SC30 Select Camp for both of them, Minnesota tradition (they have tiktoks from that time at the cabin and started their joint account that summer). I also think this is when that one Overtime video was filmed with the competition.

10/10-16/19 – Paige is in Doha Qatar for USA Basketball 3x3 tournament. Then she went to First Night at UConn and I think visited Azzi before she went to LA for ESPNW. Azzi visited UConn the week before First Night supposedly.

Dec 16, 2019: First HUDL recruiting video. End of December 2019, Azzi was presumably training with Mamba family in NYC.

Reunited in January 2020 in DMV. Azzi’s first games back from ACL were around this time and Paige was there (they filmed tiktoks together and there are videos of her in the stands). During her visit, Paige's second HUDL recruiting video for Azzi was published.

Azzi’s high school team wins state championships in early March 2020. Azzi travels to Minnesota in mid-March 2020 for Paige’s final but Covid shutdown occurs.

Paige stays with the Fudds from the end of April until June 2020 where she goes back for her graduation in early June and I think possibly packing up her stuff because I know her family was relocating to DMV at this time. She rejoins the Fudds in late June and stays with them and travels with them for Azzi’s GTS team up until end of July. Paige also gets her Gatorade award presented to her at the Fudd’s house on July 24, 2020.

Azzi is in Minnesota with her GTS in August of 2020 and Paige starts UConn.

Azzi visits Paige on her birthday and I believe tells her she’s committing to UConn in October 2020.

Azzi commits to UConn in November 11, 2020 and turns 18.

Paige's UConn season starts with her first games being cancelled because everyone is in a 14 day quarantine when one person tests positive. This was the reality of that time - they had to contact tracing and couldn't risk getting Covid during the season. They didn't have anymore cancelled games after the end of January but it certainly was an issue early on. UConn had nearly 75% of their courses online or hybrid for entire Fall 2020. Out of state students enrolled in online courses didn't live on campus. This was the reality of Paige's first year. Most likely not as social as people think and really just FTing Azzi at 1 AM apparently.

Azzi attends UConn-Tennessee game on January 21, 2021 to cheer on Paige.

Azzi attends UConn Final Four on April 2, 2021 and also attends the final (while being on FT with Paige).

Paige has ankle surgery afterwards and hanging out a lot with the Fudds as she rehabs during April and May 2021.

Azzi has USA U19 Trials in May 2021. Then graduation and prom for high school at the end of May (Paige was present during this time). Then summer session at UConn. Paige has her ESPY award speech in July 2021.

Azzi wins gold with team USA before landing back in Mn in mid August 2021 and reunited with Paige and heading to UConn.

When Catherine wss transitioning to become an official member of the royal family, was it also as messy as Meghan's? I wasn't an observer but perhaps there could be some similarities?

Nope.

#1 - Kate's transition was much, much longer. Her training most likely began in 2008 after she and William got back together and it continued all the way through very early 2012. (I'm using the announcement of Kate's first patronages and charities to mark her "training wheels" coming off.) This is on top of the "access" she had for the 4-5 years pre-breakup. So all in all, Kate's transition was at least 4 years somewhat officially, then another 4 years somewhat informally and situationally - so about 8 years altogether for Kate to become an official member.

So compare Kate's 8ish-year transition to Meghan's whirlwind 13-month transition (Meghan's move to England/engagement in Nov 2017 to the announcement of her first patronages): Kate had a ton more time to understand what she was getting into and she could take her time learning, acclimating, and managing expectations (everyone else's and her own).

On top of that, Kate has never reached full-time official status. She was supposed to "upgrade" in September 2017 (as announced in January 2017) but then best laid plans - new baby, pandemic, major illness, chemo. So some may suggest that Kate is still in transition. So that's another 11+ years to transition to an official full-time status.

(Also on that note, Plant's theory was that Kate began her 'Princess of Wales' transition in Fall 2018 after returning from maternity leave, when her coatdresses became more formal and kicked it into high gear/made it noticeable in Summer 2019 with longer dress hemlines and more polished, professional looks. With what we know now, the family may have begun their Queen-to-King transition in 2017 so Plant really may have been on to something.)

Meanwhile, Meghan expected immediately to become a full-time working royal because Harry was also full-time working royal, having transitioned to "full time" after leaving the Army. She quit Suits for this, after all. But again, best laid plans - Meghan immediately got pregnant, and then she burned out after 72 days of part-time status.

To me, this proves that William and Kate's plan of "slow and steady" has been incredibly successful. But it is incredibly glacial and in the immortal words of Miranda Priestly:

IMO, both William and Kate could stand to pick up the place a little. Let's break 120 engagements on the royal calendar when Kate is back up to full performance.

Anyway, getting off track here.

#2, Meghan's transition was messy because it also played out in PR and social media, and often at her own hand.

Kate's transition largely happened behind closed doors and away from the public eye. Kate certainly wasn't leaking anything to the press about meeting certain family members or planning what kind of work she'd do. It wasn't even officially confirmed that Kate met The Queen until William spoke about it in the engagement interview, while Meghan was leaking to her sources that she was meeting William as early as November 2016.

That's not to say Kate didn't have her messy moments. I'm sure she did, but they likely played out more privately. In fact, the only "messy" moments I can think of from before Kate married in are:

Carole chewing gum at William's passing-out ceremony. (The papers were horrified because how dare someone chew gum while existing in the same space as The Queen. It wasn't like they were having a personal audience.)

The having fun/going out dancing/drinking nights out with William and/or Pippa.

Leaked comments attributed to The Queen that she wished Kate would do something more productive with her time.

Mean girl rumors of Kate and Pippa vs Beatrice and Eugenie.

And the last one, I don't even know if it's real - Kate received "training" from the BRF on how to get in and out of cars around photographers. (I don't know if it's real because on the one hand, it's the only scene I remember from the Lifetime 'William & Kate' movie but on the other hand, this would've been back in the mid/late '00s when paparazzi were notorious for upskirt photos of young female celebs getting out of cars.)

Others who were around back in those very early days for Kate might have other info/insight.

But bottom line, it was a very different world social media-wise and traditional media wise in Kate's day vs when Meghan came around so that also must be taken into consideration when looking how both women prepared for marrying in, in addition to their own personalities and the position(s) they were marrying into.

On Calls For Pres. Biden To Step Aside: Know The Players And Motives Tossing aside one of the most progressive presidents in fifty years because you are afraid they might not win an election is just plain stupid without a really, really, really solid backup plan. It is even stupider if you look at who is pushing for him to step aside and their motives. Here are the main groups calling for Pres. Biden to step away from running against Trump in November and why:

1-Republicans. Republicans know Biden is the biggest threat to them getting back the White House and enacting their batshit crazy policy agenda. They want nothing more than to not run against Pres. Biden because not only does he have the track record of beating Trump before but has an amazing economic record to run on. If you ever want to understand who Republicans view as their political threat, all you have to do is look at who they are attacking. They were going after Hillary for three years prior to 2016. The entire Benghazi witch hunt had no other purpose than to damage her electorally. Every single hearing about Hunter Biden, the border, the Biden Crime Family,… is nothing more than dog and pony hearings to dampen Democratic and Independent voter enthusiasm.

2-The Media. Trump’s non-stop crazy train administration was a goldmine for media outlets. Every day there was a new outrage, wild-ass rant, something that brought eyes to screens which translates to selling ad time/space. The Biden administration is efficient and boring. No scandals, except the ones Republicans gin up that turn up nothing. No rants. No chaos. No real controversy. Just plain old boring governance which is great for the country but bad for a business model that relies on shock, drama, and negativity. “Dems in disarray,” has been a media cottage industry since Bill Clinton was in office. If you don’t understand the financial motivation for why the media constantly derides Democrats for the slightest misstep while ignoring Republican malfeasance, you are probably likely to fall for their own brand of political propaganda.

It should tell you something that major news outlets have come out demanding Pres. Biden step aside for not looking good on camera during one ninety-minute debate but not a single one has asked the same of the candidate who was found guilty of sexual assault, found guilty of thirty-four felony charges, misspeaks dozens of times at every rally, and goes off on wild, illogical, batshit crazy tangents, and is tied to child sexual abuse via Jeffery Epstein. That they are not treating Trump with the same non-stop demands to step aside as they are Pres. Biden should tell you something about their motives.

3-Bad Foreign Actors. Russia wants nothing more than for Biden to lose the election. He is their biggest threat to taking over Ukraine and pushing their influence farther into Western Europe. NATO is stronger now and has more members than at any time in its history. This is the last thing Putin wants. Russia has been actively pushing propaganda online to influence U.S. elections for some time but really have ramped it up the past few election cycles.

Russia targets Republicans by fueling rage over culture war topics like abortion, immigration, racial violence, and the decline of Western, Christian norms. They also target liberals by trying to divide them over issues they care about Israel/Palestine, LGBTQI rights, Bernie vs Clinton, Bernie v Biden, DNC v “real progressives,”… They want liberals at each other’s throats because, if unified, the left is the largest voting bloc in America. Conservatives are electoral dinosaurs but they maintain power through gerrymandering, voter suppression, and liberals being more invested in their petty arguments than voting Republicans out of office.

4-Sandernistas. There is still a good-sized faction of people on the left who are still upset about Bernie Sanders not being the nominee in 2016 or in 2020. They are especially mad at what they deem as “establishment Dems,” screwing over Sanders in 2020 starting with the South Carolina primary. What they really are upset about is black voters, predominately female black voters, denying their White Progressive Savior his rightful spot at the head of the ticket. Because Pres. Biden was the one who benefited from this minority voting bloc in 2020, tearing him down and taking him out is a passion project for a lot of so-called “progressives.”

These “progressives,” are under the disillusion that if the Democratic Party fails far enough, hard enough, they will be able rebuild it in their own, perfectly progressive image. They never explain how this magical transformation will happen, they just take it as a matter of faith. Of course, anyone who understands American history and basic civics knows if/when conservatives have ultimate power, they will make sure they never lose another election.

These “progressives,” are the worst kind of progressive. They are often white, middle to upper-class liberals who view politics as a game because they are usually shielded from the consequences of the electoral decisions. If you are a middle/upper-class white, male progressive, very few, if any of Trump’s actions when he was in office affected you directly. The same cannot be said about the progressive voters who overwhelmingly supported Hillary in 2016 and Joe in 2020. They have the most skin in the game, have the most to lose and they vote accordingly. For white dudebros to step in and demand Pres. Biden step aside is a direct “fuck you” to the most loyal part of the base which has the most to lose if Trump is reelected.

Never mind this group has NEVER accomplished a damn thing politically other than cost many good Democrats to lose and decades and decades of progressive policy and law wiped out. They are as adamant about their political skills as they are it is always someone else’s fault when the find-out portion of their fuck around actions comes to fruition.

5-Progressives suffering from 2016 PTSD. This is the one group I can actually relate to and sympathize with. Hillary's loss in 2016 was a major shock to a lot of people. This shock was compounded because not only were we denied the first female president, but we got a lying, narcissistic, misogynist man-child in her place who went about rolling back decades of hard-earned progressive policies and turning the Supreme Court into a right-wing arm of the Federalist Society.

For those of us who lived through 2016, there is no election data that will make us feel good or at ease. It also makes us hyper-vigilant about anything and everything that can be seen as a negative towards the nominee. The second anything bad happens, whether factual or not, a lot of people in this group take the flight instead of the fight option which is associated with PTSD.

Being overly anxious and hyper-vigilant are not necessarily bad unless they lead to bad decisions.

There is only one sure way to make sure Trump is not reelected. Vote for the candidate running against him. Period. Full fucking stop.

If you aren’t willing to do this, for whatever reason you tell yourself, then you will be directly responsible for the very thing you claim is a politically existential moment. Stop listening and parroting Republican talking points. Stop allowing the media to determine who you should vote for. Stop listening to butt-hurt progressives who have no record of political success about what those who do should/shouldn’t do. Stop acting like frightened little bunnies whenever someone says something negative about successful Democratic leaders. Stop automatically going into flight mode when something goes wrong or something negative is said. Fight.

If you aren’t willing to fight, and I’m not talking about inter-party fighting (that time came and went,) for women’s rights, minority rights, safe air/water/food, climate policies, democracy… then you really aren’t as progressive as you tell yourself and others. You are a big reason why we are even in this situation. Whether you like Pres. Biden or think he is too old really isn’t the pertinent issue if you really care about the things you say you do. As long as Pres. Biden is willing to fight like hell for progressive policies and prevent Republicans from turning the country into a white supremacist, misogynist, oligarchy, you should be doing the same.

I don’t know what is going to happen between now and election day. Neither does anyone else. The one thing I am 100% positive about is if Trump does win, the people on the left who have spent the majority of their time and energy railing against the Democratic Party and Pres. Biden will blame anyone and everyone other than themselves. If Pres. Biden wins reelection, these same people will claim their childish hissy fits are what led him to “change course,” enabling him to win. Their view of personal responsibility for election outcomes is some fucked up “No True Scotsman,” bullshit. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING ever counts against their political beliefs and views.

I know some people reading this will wonder why I spend so much time and energy railing against the left. The answer is really simple-I fully expect the people on the right to be bad-faith actors who are hell-bent on destroying any and all progressive policies and candidates. I don’t, and shouldn’t expect the same from people who claim to be political allies. You can't claim to be a member of Team Good™ if your behaviors and actions help Team Bad™.

a look at what y/n’s life was like before she debuted in ateez.

born in misty falls, south carolina, y/n would live a rather normal life in the united states. that is until her and her parents move to osaka, japan when she's five for her mother's job. with her family moving across the world, y/n would continue her life and education in japan from about 2005-2012.

while living in japan, y/n would continue to live a rather normal life as she learned to speak a new language along with adapting to a new culture and school. y/n was quickly able to make friends at school through elementary and middle school. while living in japan during this time, y/n would become heavily interested in both j-pop and k-pop, especially the later as it was quickly rising in popularity. y/n would later cite that she was obsessed with hikaru utada, abba, boa, and girl's generation.

former classmates of the idol cited that y/n was often a "model student" and always excelled in her classes. in middle school, she also joined student council and helped planned several school events. during school festivals, her and her friends would often perform at the festival doing covers of popular j-pop and k-pop songs. one video of y/n and her friends performing was posted online around 2019 and has since become a viral clip within the atiny community.

it wouldn't be until 2012 when y/n's life would begin to change as she was approached by an sm entertainment scout during her school's festival which her and her friends performed an original song along with several covers of different j-pop girl groups. the scout had told y/n that she should consider auditioning for the company because she "had a lot of talent" that sm entertainment could help her become an idol like the ones she did covers of.

at first her parents were strongly against letting y/n audition having assumed that this was a scam and would end badly. however, y/n managed to convince them to at least let her go to a public sm audition that was happening in tokyo. her parents agreed and y/n traveled with her close friend, who was going for support, to tokyo.

y/n would pass her audition and as a result, y/n would travel to south korea so she can begin her training as an idol. while at sm, y/n would work on learning the language and be enrolled into an international school which is where she would continue her studies.

in 2013, y/n would be revealed to the public as a member of sm rookies and the korean public would immediately favor her as compared to other sm rookies her age. netizens would praise her singing and dancing that was being showcased through sm rookie station videos.

in 2015, y/n along with several other sm rookies would appear on the show mickey mouse club [1] which a lot of fans think is where y/n would fall even more into public favor as it was able to showcase her talents more. many netizens would comment on how funny and likable she was and how she had a good relationship with her fellow trainees. sm would see the public favoritism towards her and even allow her to have a solo stage on the show with her singing "can't say i'm in love" from disney's hercules.

however, before the end of 2015, y/n would leave the company after sm would reveal to have no concrete plans of debut for her. this is also noted by many netizens online as they have also began to voice how upset they are towards sm for not debuting y/n yet, especially since she was one of their most popular trainees. after the debut of red velvet and the plan for nct to debut – which both featured former sm rookies. the news of y/n leaving sm would shock online forums. the news would also lead to a lot of companies contacting y/n and her parents wanting the trainee to join their companies with promises of "debuting by the end of the year" or "debuting by next year". y/n; however, would decide to take a break from training in order to focus on her studies.

a few months into 2016; however, y/n would be continuing her studies, hanging out with friends, while also still searching for a new company to join. y/n would be talking to some classmates who went to a dance academy and talked about one of the other dancers there and how he had recently joined a small company. seeing videos of this boy dancing, y/n would become interested in him before she eventually found and did research on the company her classmate told her about. this would lead y/n to personally emailing the company's ceo telling him that she was interested in joining their company. the company was called kq entertainment.

when the kq's ceo responded, y/n would travel to the company with her housemate / guardian, jiwon, in order to speak with the ceo and other higher-ups at kq.

when she meets the ceo, he would tell her that there is only two other trainees currently with her being the third. at first, y/n was worried that maybe she made a mistake with choosing kq, but she would eventually meet the other two trainees – recognize one of them from her classmate's dance video – and would soon get to know the two and become close friends with them. (spoiler: the two trainees are hongjoong and yunho)

eventually, other trainees would join the company and y/n was once again starting to wonder if she would get to debut as only male trainees were joining. upon voicing her concern to fellow trainee hongjoong, he would promise that they would debut together no matter what. this would lead to him convincing kq to let y/n official join their pre-debut team, kq fellaz. once news of y/n preparing to debut in a male-dominated group circulated, many netizens shared mixed reactions of both surprise and concern for the female trainee. some netizens even assumed that kq was using y/n's popularity as clout for their group and would begin protest to try and get her removed from the group. however, y/n would show netizens and fans that kq was not using her for clout and that she had a genuine friendship with the other members of kq fellaz.

eventually on october 24, 2018, y/n would debut as a member of ateez.

Just finished chapter 11 of my fanfic! It’s almost done so I’ll be wrapping up the first book in my series. Very excited this was my best chapter yet if you haven’t read it yet and liked this post, please feel free to click the link below!

Eddie felt his heart sinking, it almost felt like it wasn’t even beating anymore. Like when Steve left, he took his heart with him. His breathing was shallow, every second that passed the words Steve said replayed in his head.

Faggot. Freak. Don’t call me. Don’t talk to me. Leave me alone….

Eddie felt like something was clawing inside his chest, fighting to get out. A feeling of anger so strong that he didn’t even notice he was walking. No, he was running. He ran and ran, past trailers, past cars, into the woods. He ran until his lungs were on fire, until his feet hurt, and then he ran some more.

He didn’t know where he was or where he was going; he was just running away. Away from the memory, from the moment, as far away as he could possibly get. He stopped for just a second in the middle of the woods, surrounded by trees, the light of the moon cascading down on him. He huffed air out and his breath was so thick it clouded him, just like his love for Steve. The way he blindly followed and loved him. Before Eddie could register what he was doing, a scream erupted from his throat. It was a scream of pain, of heartache, of longing. It echoed around him as he fell to his knees, the cool air no match for the heat of his skin.

Steam rising off his bare arms, he breathed heavily and felt a hole inside of him. Whatever was hiding in the depths of his soul - it had crawled out and was sitting with him in the woods, pressing down on his shoulders. It felt like the weight of the world was resting on them.

Why. Why me. Why me. I don’t understand. Why Steve? Eddie let out a whimper of pain, his inner thoughts leaving his mind, giving them a real voice.

“Fucking Christ.” He said, feeling the darkness around him, the one that haunted him most of his life. Never good enough. Undeserving of love.

He huffed and cried and fell to his hands, fully braced in the fallen leaves and sticks. The dirt sticking to his hands as he lifted one to wipe his face, tears leaving the stains of his heart on his cheeks, the dirt smudging, turning to mud as it collided with his tears. He sniffed the snot back into his nose as he stood up, looking around. He didn’t know where he was, he didn’t know which way he came from.

“Idiot.” He said out loud to himself, looking for any sign of civilization, finding nothing but the emptiness of his own self and the crunch of nature beneath his bare feet. He walked, still overly warm for the temperature being what it was so late into the year.

Eddie walked back - or what he believed was back - towards the trailer park, but the woods never seemed to end. He felt the exhaustion of running hitting him like a train, the anger that fueled him now dissipating into a deep depressive sadness. His body no longer felt hot, just cold and empty. His legs grew weaker as did his drive to keep walking. The hollow feeling in his chest not making him feel lighter but heavier with each step. Eddie saw a log not too far in front of him and sat down next to it, resting his head on his arm as he gave in to the exhaustion.

He listened to the chirps of crickets and the peaceful whispers of the trees in the slight breeze, the cold setting in finally, leaving him shivering. He felt his toes starting to numb as his eyes became heavy. Before he knew it, he was drifting off to a place where he could only hope Steve was waiting for him.

Hangster (and IceMav) - Bradley is too tall to be a naval aviator and instead becomes a sky diver, specialising in spin recovery. He is a civilian contractor to the military to teach pilots how to survive parachute spins from ejections. A more in-depth version of this post.

Jake leaves early, kissing him goodbye and telling him he has a day of training ahead of him but he’ll be back. He lets him go, knows he will definitely see him later. But he wants to talk to Ice. Needs to talk to him and he doesn’t linger in bed, already has a jump planned so he can’t lie about.

“So, this mission… that Mav and Jake are undertaking,” he starts, and he doesn’t know for certain, but he's able to make conclusions from the data provided to him.

“Yes. It’s… dangerous.”

“How dangerous?” Bradley presses, because everything they do has an element of danger.

“It’ll require a couple of miracles. Mav’s words.”

“Jesus fuck…” Bradley mutters, because Mav doesn’t call them that lightly. “So it’s a suicide mission?”

“Not if he gets his way. And you know him, he usually gets his way.”

Bradley huffs at the weak joke, but his heart is frozen at the idea that he might not have Mav around anymore, or Jake… worst case scenario, neither of them. He’s already had the gut churning fear of thinking he may have lost Mav too recently, one of the reasons why he’s no longer holding back at all with Jake…

Fuck.

“No other options huh?”

“No other option,” Ice says, and Bradley gives him a tight hug.

Jake stares at his phone, worried that he hasn’t had a reply from Bradley about his invitation and startles a little when Maverick sidles up to him, coffee cup in hand although he’s pretty sure it’s not coffee Maverick is drinking, but something more like a herbal tea.

“You alright Lieutenant?”

“Of course sir.”

“He landed safely from his second jump fifteen minutes ago, won’t be checking his phone for about another half hour, but I have confirmation that he’s safe.”

“Oh,” something inside uncurls, and he realizes it’s a bigger part that he’s not being deliberately ignored. He never doubted that Bradley was safe. His own phone is normally in his locker, untouched, but it’s their lunch break and he’d made an uncharacteristic check; unused to silence from Bradley and of course it all makes sense now.

“He doesn’t let anything distract him when he’s jumping. Phone stays in the chase vehicle. He’ll answer you as soon as he can.”

“Thanks Mav.”

“Anytime.”

“You seem pretty… invested in him.”

“Did you know it took him nearly three years before he even agreed to have a drink with me?”

Mav laughs, shakes his head and Jake doesn’t ask him what’s funny.

“So I’ll take my three nights with him, and every scrap of every minute in between.”

“And after?”

Jake shrugs, it feels too soon, too cheesy and corny to say forever, or a lifetime even if that’s what his gut-instinct was to simply blurt out. Mav slaps him on the arm, nods his head like he understands and then simply walks away and Jake wonders what the hell he saw in Jake’s face.

“What were you and Maverick talking about? Looked serious.”

“Yeah, I guess It was.”

… … …

“You’re looking awfully happy. Hot date?”

“The hottest. I’m finally in North Island, and Bradley Bradshaw is finally in North Island…”

“Did he finally agree to a date?” Phoenix asks, because they’d all known Jake had asked Bradley out when he’d been their instructor at Top Gun.

“More than that. He’s meeting me here right… about… now…” Jake says, watching as Bradley pushes the door open and catches his eye. He doesn’t think he’s ever seen Bradley in anything other than a suit or pajamas. And naked of course. Now he’s walking toward Jake and the jeans make his legs look endless, scoop necked tank revealing the start of his chest hair and an odd Hawaiian button-down shirt in muted colors. He looks so fucking good and Jake can’t wait to go home with him, tomorrow dedicated to resting before they flyout.

“Jesus Bagman, try and be a little subtle, he’s going to think you’re only after him for one thing.”

“He knows I’m not.”

“Bradshaw, as I live and breathe…”

“Jake. You look… good.”

“Only good? Must be slipping…”

Then he leans forward into Bradley’s space and they’re kissing, gentle-soft and he knows they’re getting looks, draws back, and turns to the watching crowd.

“Everyone, you remember Dr Bradshaw.”

“Bradley. Please, call me Bradley.”

Despite the numerous sideways looks he gets Bradley slots right into the Daggers, hustles them all, including Jake, with his pool playing skills. Tells them off for underestimating someone who has a doctorate in physics and understanding the effect of spin on objects. He then turns to Jake, smile almost splitting his face;

“You especially should know not to underestimate me, you know who raised me and likely taught me how to play…”

“Of course he did…” Jake mutters, because one thing he’s learnt these last couple of weeks is to never underestimate Maverick Mitchell. And mentioning him like this means it’s obviously okay to mention their relationship to one another.

“What’s he talking about?”

“Maverick raised me, I think you’re familiar with him?” Bradley asks, tongue between his teeth and Jake doesn’t resist the urge to just lean forward and kiss him. He’s clearly enjoying being a bit of a dick and Jake is so here for it. As if they have one mind all the Dagger Squad swing to look at him.

“What?” Javy asks, clearly the silently nominated speaker, and Javy has known about him messaging Bradley for the last few months, has been encouraging of it, happy for him.

“Bradley here is the godson of our esteemed leader, Maverick.”

There’s a couple of sideways looks and Jake licks his lips, realizes that some of them might be jumping to certain incorrect conclusions. Javy’s eyebrows are up in disbelief.

“Tell them when I found out about that,” Jake says, because he’d been named wingman on Friday, which is only yesterday but also feels likes weeks ago, and it wasn’t because of this new relationship he has with Bradley.

“Last night. Uh. Jake and Maverick were at my place at the same time… I hadn’t really told them about each other. Was a surprise all round.”

“Ooohhh… that explains that talk you guys were having this morning. Was it a shovel talk?” Phoenix asked, and she looks hopeful.

“Mav talked to you?” Bradley asks, looking concerned.

“It wasn’t a shovel talk! But yes, he did talk to me, but it wasn’t a shovel talk. More like the opposite if anything…”

“So… it’s just been this whole big coincidence?” Javy says, and he’s starting to grin now and Jake’s stomach sinks, because his best friend is about to throw him somewhere, under a bus or into a canyon… “Did Jake tell you about the time he and I picked Mav up and threw him out of here?”

“Out of here? The Hard Deck?”

“Yep,” Javy says, grinning, and the others are starting to grin too and Jake groans. Bradley looks delighted though, and he should have known.

“When was this?”

“A couple of weeks ago…”

“Oh my god… that was you. I…” he cuts off abruptly and Jake realizes he was probably about to say Ice. “I heard about that. Not from Mav though. Someone else told me,” Bradley finishes, and Jake takes that as confirmation that it was definitely Iceman that had told him.

Fucking hell.

He freezes then, sudden realization dawning.

He threw the husband of the COMPACFLT out of the Hard Deck onto his ass… And he’s alive and breathing.

Okay.

Maybe he doesn’t have to worry too much about breaking Bradley’s heart if he can do that to Maverick and suffer no consequence. At least none that he knows about anyway.

Oh god, he cannot wait until Javy gets to have this same realization. He has to see that.

“Yeah, didn’t do much for his post-ejection injuries apparently.”

“Wait, what?”

Bradley looks between them, purses his lips and then bites them, and Jake wonders if this is another thing that Bradley’s maybe not meant to mention. Fucking hell, no wonder Maverick wasn’t meant to be flying lead.

“Nothing, it’s fine. Oh! Hey Aunt Penny…”

“Bradley!” She greets, giving him a one-armed hug as she gathers empties. “Long time since you’ve been around here. What are you doing with this bunch of reprobates?”

Almost as one the Daggers voice their displeasure, already distracted and Jake grins at her, expects a grin back, is instead given the coldest look he’s ever received and he straightens, wonders what he’s done to earn her displeasure because she’s been nothing but friendly before.

“Do his parents know about you?” She asks, voice low enough Jake has to struggle to hear her.

“Uh… I met them last night. So yes?”

“Really?”

“Maverick and, uh, the other one,” Jake offers, because he’d said he wouldn’t mention what he’d learnt, which is a little hard to do when Penny Benjamin is staring him down. Except she’s back to smiling at him, nodding her head.

“Welcome to the family kid, look forward to seeing more of you.”

Fuck he hopes so.

… … …

They spend most of Sunday resting, and like on Friday night they don’t seem to want to stop touching one another. He’s okay with that, lets Jake press into him and hold himself as close he can in Bradley’s space. They do shower and dress for lunch with Mav and Ice. Then Jake takes a phone call with his family and Bradley sits with Mav, insists on a game of five-hundred to keep his mind off the hours ticking down to their departure. Ice has disappeared into his study and they both know it’s his own way of coping, keeping himself busy with work. He doesn’t need to say anything, he knows he can’t say anything. What he can do is spend time, so that’s what he does. With both the man he’s known his entire life, and the man he’s only recently let into his life. When Jake is off the phone they coax Ice out of his study and end up playing four-player five-hundred before deciding that Ice and Mav cannot be partners, their table talk far to subtle to be caught and Bradley is sick of them winning.

At three in the morning he hears Jake‘s alarm go off, and he hopes Jake at least got more sleep than he did. He watches in silence as Jake slides out of bed and heads to the shower, comes out fully dressed and he sees Bradley watching him in the dimmed half-light.

“I look forward to my welcome home, okay?”

“You take care out there, you hear me?”

“Always darlin’.”

“That’s all I can ask.”

The kiss Jake gives him is softly sweet.

They don’t say goodbye.

Happy Birthday actor Kenneth Cranham born 12th December 1944 in Dunfermline.

Cranham trained at the National Youth Theatre and RADA, he is a very prolific theatre and TV actor who has also appeared in countless films since his debut as Noah Claypole in the 1968 musical Oliver, you might remember him from playing the title role in the 80’s show Shine On Harvey Moon. Now I’ve checked and double checked and for a man who has acting credits in over 50 television shows he has never been in Taggart! Most disappointing….

From the 70’s he was in Z-Cars, Softly, Softly: Taskforce, A Family at War and Budgie, in 80’s Brideshead Revisited, Reilly: Ace of Spies ( as Vladimir Lenin no less!), Inspector Morse and Boon, the 90’s didn’t see him slow down, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Casualty, Bergerac and Kavanagh QC. The “Noughties” saw him pick up roles in the British-American-Italian historical drama Rome, Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Merlin. The past few years he has been on the small screen in Upstairs Downstairs, Death in Paradise and War and Peace.

His notable film roles have been in Chocolat, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, Gangster No. 1, Layer Cake, Valkyrie with Tom Cruise and Maleficent with Angelina Jolie.

Wikipedia has Cranham appearing in around 100 tv shows, he also finds time to tread the boards and in he won a prestigious 2016 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in The Father. Other UK TV series include Scarborough and The Good Karma Hospital another TV series set in a coastal town in tropical South India.

Imdb have two upcoming productions for Kenneth, Warrior, a historical drama set during the Roman era, based on actual events, embellished with a hint of myth, legend and imagination, and Bnoit, a documentary exploring the fall of Maximilian Francis Benoit. From high-profile public figure to disgraced, presumed dead crime lord.

Sometimes Christabel felt there was a veil over her eyes, blinding her to the truth of her marriage, of Henry's true nature. Each time he hurt her, it was like a tear in that veil. In the early days of their marriage, those tears were far apart, easily ignored, but over time, they kept building and building. Now, there were simply too many, and the veil was falling apart.

Then came another incident, and this time, it wasn't just a tear. This time, the whole veil was wrenched painfully from her eyes, and finally, she understood what it meant to suffer death by a thousand cuts.

Luna was growing fast. Christabel knew that soon she would have to hire a trainer or perhaps send Luna to a stable to get properly trained, but for now, the horse was making great progress. Christabel dreamed of when Luna was big enough and they could ride up and down the shore, to Golden Gate Park and Sutro Heights and beyond.

The only thing about Luna that worried Christabel, the only thing that marred her perfect beauty, was that she had a rather strange bump on her forehead. Indeed, Christabel hadn't even noticed it in the first few weeks, thinking it was just bones, but as Luna grew, so did this bump, until it protruded into a quite visible nub between her ears. She often rubbed it against things and really enjoyed it when Christabel scratched around it.

When Christabel brought the matter up to Henry, he became oddly excited. Though he hadn't spared Luna another glance since he gave her to Christabel, that day Henry personally went into the stall to examine the horse. Luna, who was always so calm and friendly, gave a frightened little whicker and ran in panicked circles around the stall, refusing to let Henry come near, let alone touch her. Henry had to retreat before she quieted down.

"We may have a unicorn on our hands, darling," he said to Christabel with a grin.

"Don't be absurd, there's no such thing as a unicorn," she retorted. If he was not going to have the bump looked at, then she was not going to waste her time convincing him. Since it didn't seem to bother Luna much, Christabel put it out of her mind.

A few nights after that, Christabel's old nightmare came back. Since Christmas, thanks to the phonograph and her growing collection of records, her sleep had been specter-free. That night though, despite having listened to the phonograph before sleep as usual, Christabel found herself face to face with those three ghosts again, their eyes gray and empty like the mist, their chest gaping and dripping blood. They were on the beach this time.

"What do you want from me?" she asked, as she'd always asked them in her dreams, but she wasn't expecting an answer. Almost resignedly, she screwed her eyes shut and waited for the inevitable moment when the mist came for her and erased her. Once, when she was little, she had been skating in Central Park on one of the rare occasions her mother allowed her out of the house. Unbeknownst to her, the ice had cracked earlier that day. As she slid across the ice and felt, rather than heard, the gunshot snap beneath her skates, her heart had dropped to the bottom of her stomach, and it had seemed like an eternity before she hit the freezing water. There had been no more ice skating after that.

It felt just like that now, only increased a hundredfold, as she waited for the mist in her dream.

But the mist never came. There were hoof beats behind her, and Christabel turned just in time to see a streak of silver rush past her in a spray of sand. It was Luna. With the certainty of dream logic, she knew it was Luna, although other than its shiny white coat, this horse looked nothing like Luna—it was fully grown, and a long, sharp horn grew out of its forehead. A unicorn.

The unicorn headed straight for the three figures by the edge of the water, its horn aiming at them. Somehow, Christabel knew that if it touched them, something terrible was going to happen, just as something terrible always happened to her when she touched those figures. "No, Luna!" she screamed. "Stop!"

It was too late. The horn went through the chest wound of the figure in the middle—Frederick Benson—and it was no longer Christabel that was screaming, but Frederick, Patrick, and the still unnamed girl, their mouths yawning dark holes, issuing forth terrible screams, like those of a dying animal. To her horror, the unicorn was fading as well, swallowed up by the fog. Luna had taken her place.

"No, Luna, no!" Christabel cried, trying to hold on to the horse, but her hands only ran through cold, wet, empty air.

Luna reared up, looming over Christabel, and let out a scream, a too-real scream of fear and pain. The moment Luna's front legs, now little more than two wisps of fog, came down over her head, Christabel woke up.

She lay still, feeling the pillow damp with sweat under her cheek, listening to her thundering heartbeats. It had been so real, that dream, even more real than her waking nightmares, especially those screams... The figures had never made a sound in any of her previous dreams, they'd only stood and looked at her in silence. So what had changed?

When her heart refused to calm down, Christabel got out of bed, threw on her dressing gown, and went to the window. It was still dark outside, though a lighter strip of gray on the horizon told her that dawn was not far off. There was a light on at Kas's window, but that was nothing unusual. He often kept a light on throughout the night. Everything was quiet.

No, not everything was quiet. Straining her ears, Christabel could make out voices rising in contention and panic. They were coming from the other side of the house. Heart hammering in her chest again, she flew downstairs and followed the voices into the garage.

Blazing lights hit her full in the face, blinding her after the gloom of the house, and for a moment, Christabel couldn't see anything. When her eyes finally adjusted, a horrible sight greeted her—in the middle of the stall littered with crushed straw and splintered wood, evidence of a great struggle, was Luna, lying on her side, unmoving, a tongue so dark it appeared almost black protruding from her foaming mouth, legs bent at stiff, unnatural angles. Henry and Kas stood over her, their eyes wide, chests heaving from exertion. Dangling from Henry's hand was what Christabel thought was a leather belt at first, but upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a cobra, its head smashed.

Christabel didn't remember what she did then. She must have screamed and run to Luna, for the next thing she knew, Henry had tossed the dead snake aside and was hauling her to her feet, while she fought him to reach Luna's side.

"Let me go!" she screamed. "Let me help her!"

"She's beyond help!" shouted Henry. "Kas, put the carcass under the cypress, while I take Mrs. Creel inside."

The carcass. She thought he meant the snake, and then it hit her. He meant Luna. Her lovely Luna, now nothing but a carcass, like one of those weather-bleached skeletons she'd seen from the train.

Kas threw Christabel an anguished look. "Yes, sir," he said, taking a blanket and draping it over the inert white form. That simple, irrevocable gesture finally convinced Christabel that Luna was really dead. All her panicked strength drained out of her, and she let Henry drag her out of the garage and back to the house.

"What happened?" she asked, the moment they were through the door.

"The cobra escaped its cage. I guess the horse got spooked, and the cobra fought back."

"But you said the cages were secure!"

Henry shrugged and steered her toward the stairs. "Accidents happen. Now, go back to bed. Kas will bury her."

His dismissive tone stung. "I want to be there," she said.

"What?"

"I want to say goodbye to her. At least give me that."

"Don't be hysterical. It's just a horse. I'll buy you another one."

"I'm not a child," she said, pushing his hand away. "Do you think you can just give me another toy and I'll shut up?"

Henry rolled his eyes. "I don't have time for this."

He headed back to the garage. Some of Christabel's shock was wearing off, and anger rose in its place. How dare he be so nonchalant, how dare he dismiss her like this! She lunged after him.

"You're not even going to apologize?"

"For what?"

"This is your fault! You did this! You and those monsters of yours!"

She didn't see him move. Something struck the side of her head, leaving her cheek stinging and her ear ringing. She clasped a hand to her face, out of shock and fear more than pain, while Henry opened the door. He didn't even look at her. "Go back to your room," he said calmly and stepped out.

The moment he disappeared into the dark, Christabel turned and ran. But she didn't run upstairs. She ran outside, down the drive, and all the way across the path bridging the island and the shore. Upon reaching the shore, she kept running, driven by sheer grief and despair, ignoring the cold wind across her face, the rough sand under her feet. She only wanted to get as far away as possible from Creel House.

Christabel ran until her legs and her lungs gave out. The sun was coming up, shining through the gray clouds like a silver coin on a pewter tray, doing little to warm the air. Creel House still loomed behind her, enveloped in its own mist, a dark, malevolent mass, scowling, mocking. She would never be able to outrun it. She crumpled to the ground, leaning against a sand dune, too exhausted and heartbroken to move.

She told herself not to think of Luna, though everything around reminded her of the little horse, from the cold, white sun that put her in mind of Luna's coat, to the sand where Luna used to run. But the tears wouldn't come. A heavy, somber fear, the remnant of her dream, weighed her down like a shroud, preventing the grief from taking over. That particular dream had been prophetic. Did this mean that her previous dreams all foretold her future as well? Was she fated to die a horrible death, like poor Luna?

No. She couldn't think that way. It was bad enough that she was out here on this God-forsaken beach in her dressing gown and bedroom slippers like some madwoman, now she believed in premonitions and fate too? No. She must stay rational. As much as she hated to admit it, Henry had been right. What happened to Luna had been an accident, no more.

At the thought of Henry, another kind of grief, mixed with anger and fear, surged up within her like bile, and her cheek throbbed again. It wasn't just that he'd hit her. She could even accept that he'd done so in the heat of the moment. But what disturbed her most was the casual way he'd done it, without a care, without a look back, like swatting away an irritating fly. That was what she was to him. Nothing.

What could she do now? Where would she go? Leave Henry and return to New York with her tail between her legs, admitting to her mother that she'd made a mistake? No! Not in a million years, not after she'd made such a show to Jason about how happy she was. And to be one of those divorcees, to have people turn their backs on her, to see their mock-polite smiles, knowing how they whispered about her behind closed doors? No, no, no. She couldn't bear it. She had married Henry to escape all that, she couldn't leave him to go back to that world now. The very thought of it made her stomach twist with shame and disgust.

Then her stomach twisted with something else, and Christabel realized the sun was now high in the sky. She had been out since daybreak. She was tired and cold and hungry, and there was nothing around her but sand and sea. With a sigh, she struggled to her feet. Creel House may be loathsome and frightful, but it was also her house, in name at least. She was not going to give it up just yet.

As she reached the causeway, Christabel saw, with dismay, that the path was now completely submerged. The tides must have come in while she was running down the shore. The boat was back on the island. She rang the bell. The sun was too bright for Kas to be out, but if Henry was home, he would come for her, surely. She rang the bell again, straining to see if there was any movement on the island. There was none. Was Henry out? Was he looking for her? The shore stretched on for miles and miles, had he missed her behind the sand dunes?

She dipped a foot into the water, testing it, only to jerk back as if she'd been bitten. The water was freezing cold. If she tried swimming in this, the cold would kill her before she could reach the island.

She rang the bell again, her hope of getting answered diminishing by the minute. Perhaps she could wait until Henry came back, or until sundown... It wasn't the day for grocery delivery, so nobody would come down this path and she need not worry about having to explain her awkward predicament.

Just as Christabel dropped down onto the sand again in fatigue and despair, a movement on the island caught her eyes. A dark speck was bobbing over the water toward her. It was the boat! As it got closer, Christabel saw that the parasol had been rigged over it, and shielded under it, wearing his long cloak and the gloves, was Kas.

"Are you all right?" he shouted the moment he came within her earshot.

"Yes." Something burst in her chest at the sight of him, something warm and pleasant that chased away all the pain and hurt. By now, she was desperate enough to accept any rescue at all, but she was glad it was Kas that came for her, glad in a way she knew she wouldn't have been if it had been Henry.

"I'm sorry it took me so long. I couldn't make the parasol stay upright," he said, maneuvering the boat so she could step on. His eyes widened as they landed on her face, and Christabel put a subconscious hand to her cheek. It must be more swollen than she'd thought.

"Don't worry about it." She meant both about the boat and her cheek, and Kas clearly understood, for he said nothing more. Once she settled on the seat opposite him, he started toward the island in long, steady strokes. Only his white-knuckled grip on the oars betrayed his true feelings.

"I wish you didn't have to risk yourself for me," she said.

"I don't mind."

"Where's Mr. Creel?"

"He had to go into town on urgent business." She was silent. Of course. He hadn't bothered to comfort her about Luna, why would he care when she ran away? Sensing her anger, Kas added, "I wanted to go after you, but he told me to let you blow off steam." He watched her for a moment and said, more quietly, "I'm so sorry about Luna, Mrs. Creel."

Pain squeezed her heart, choking her.

"What have you done to her?" she managed to ask.

"I've—I've buried her."

"Under the cypress trees?"

"No, by the beach."

Christabel nodded. She couldn't bear the notion of Luna being confined to those dark, haunted trees. "Thank you," she said. "She would like that. It's her favorite place."

Then she thought of Luna, sweet, pretty, clever Luna, dead and buried now, and she began to cry. Never again would Luna run on the beach alongside Christabel, never again would she nip Christabel to ask for pets or push her nose under her hand in search of sugar, never again would Christabel open the garage door to find Luna waiting for her. How many times she could have petted Luna or given her sugar without being asked, and hadn't? It was too late to make up for it now. The tears kept coming, wrung out of her in bitter, gulping sobs, and Christabel buried her face in her hands and cried and cried, for Luna and for herself.

The boat stopped. She felt Kas sit down by her. He held the parasol in one hand, shading them both, and his other arm went around her, pulling her to him. She held back at first, but when he drew her forward to his chest, she let her head fall onto his shoulder. Oh, how lovely! How lovely! For so long, too long, Christabel hadn't been properly held, and she had almost forgotten how lovely it was to sit like that, with his shoulder taking on the weight of her grief and his hand massaging the knots out of her back. Her sobs quieted. With a sigh, she wrapped her arms around him and buried her face in his neck, breathing in his familiar scent of earth and smoke and the sea.

"It's all right," he murmured, rocking her against him, gentle as the rocking of the waves on the sides of the boat. "You'll be all right, Mrs. Creel."

The name rankled. "Don't call me that," she said. It came out sharper than she'd intended, and Kas's arm stiffened across her shoulders.

"What'd you want me to call you then?" he asked.

She lifted her head to look at him. "Call me by my name. Call me Christabel. At least—at least when it's just the two of us together."

Those words struck her as oddly intimate, and she became aware of how close their faces were, so close she could feel his breath on her cheek, could see his dark eyes, enormous in the shade under the parasol. He'd heard the desperation in her voice too and was looking at her, eyes wide in shock or fear. How foolish she'd been! Just because she'd been fantasizing about him didn't mean that he felt the same about her. What she did in the privacy of her bedroom was shameful enough, but here—she was practically throwing herself at him. A servant! What would her mother say? My God, what if he told Henry?

"You know what, never mind." She sat up straight and pushed him away. "Just take me back."

"As you wish, Mrs. Creel," he said. Something in his voice was like an arrow through her heart. Had she really worried about what her mother would've said? Why did she still care? Everything she'd done had been to get away from her mother, and it seemed she hadn't escaped at all.

Kas got to his feet to return to the bow. She grabbed his hand, pulling him down by her side. She didn't know what possessed her to do so when she'd pushed him away only seconds ago, but at that moment, she couldn't bear to be away from him. He looked down at her hand clutching his, then lifted his eyes to her face. The look in those eyes made her breath catch in her throat, and, without thinking, she kissed him.

His lips parted in surprise. She pushed forward, taking his bottom lip between hers, marveling at how soft his mouth was, how responsive he was to her kiss, so unlike Henry, whose answer to her kisses was always a tight-lipped grimace. Kas's arm was around her again, his mouth moving hesitantly under hers, returning the kiss with a fervor that matched her own. Her hands came up to clasp his temples, her trembling fingers sinking into his curls, holding him close, while she captured his mouth again and again, draining it, like one dying of thirst—

He wrenched himself away from her, so abruptly that he left her dizzy.

"I'm sorry," she said quickly, even as she was drawn back to him by some invisible magnet. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, I..." She hardly knew what she was saying. She only saw his mouth, still temptingly close, and couldn't stop herself from pulling him to her once more, from claiming that soft, lush mouth with hers once more—

"We can't," he said, seizing both of her wrists to hold her at arm's length.

The parasol dropped out of his hand into the water, and Kas's face began to redden as sunlight spilled over him. He snatched the parasol up and scrambled to put it back in its place by the bow, but it wobbled, refusing to stay.

"Here, let me." Christabel took the parasol and held it over him. For a moment, Kas looked like he wanted to protest, but he took up the oars again without another word.

Though they sat side and side, he held himself stiffly, as far away from her as possible, while they traveled the rest of the way to the island. When they reached the shore, Christabel got off the boat on her own and held the parasol for Kas as he pulled the boat up and tied it to the dock. The house loomed above them, and the fog reached out its fingers, drawing them back into its grayness.

"I'm fine from here," Kas said, taking the parasol from her without looking at her.

Christabel turned away, but she couldn't bring herself to go into the house, to face its gloom and Henry's silent contempt. Her feet took her toward the garage. She had to see for herself, to believe that Luna was really gone.

The stall had been cleaned up. The saddle, reins, and brushes were gone from the wall. The straw had been swept away. There was no sign that a horse had ever been here.

The sight of that empty stall brought on a fresh flood of tears. Christabel slowly sat down, put her forehead on her knees, and let the tears flow down her face and drop onto the floor, like rain.

Something between the floorboards caught her eyes. Christabel picked it up and turned it over in her hand curiously. It was a flat, triangular shape, the size of her palm, slightly curved, grayish green in color and ridged all over. She would've thought it was simply a piece of tree bark, if it hadn't been for its strange shape and feel, rough and smooth at the same time, almost like a fish scale.

"Don't touch that!" Kas yelled behind her, making her drop the thing.

"What is it?" she asked.

"It could be from the cobra. Anyway, it's not a good idea to pick up unknown things around here." He tried to appear casual, but from the way he used a piece of rag to pick up the thing, Christabel realized Kas knew more about it than he let on. It was too big to be from any cobra, unless that cobra was the size of a python. But she was too tired to press him about it.

"You go up to the house," Kas said. "I'll bring you some food later."

There was nothing else to say then. "Thank you, Kas."

"You're welcome, Mrs. Creel."

Mrs. Creel.

Pulling the belt of her dressing gown tighter, Christabel stumbled into the house, swallowing the lump of disappointment in her throat.
