9. New vaccine effective against coronaviruses that haven't even emerged yet
“Researchers have developed a new vaccine technology that has been shown in mice to provide protection against a broad range of coronaviruses with potential for future disease outbreaks -- including ones we don't even know about. […] The new vaccine works by training the body's immune system to recognise specific regions of eight different coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-1, SARS-CoV-2, and several that are currently circulating in bats and have potential to jump to humans and cause a pandemic.”
10. Grassland birds, Forest birds and Other Migratory Birds to Benefit from More Than $22 Million in Funding Throughout the Americas
“This year, more than $4.87 million in federal funds will be matched by more than $17 million in partner contributions going to 30 collaborative conservation projects in 19 countries across the Americas. “These investments will [… protect] millions of acres of diverse habitats needed by grassland birds, forest birds and shorebirds for wintering, breeding and migration,” said Service Director Martha Williams.”

Kicking Up Dust - Part 3
Bucky Barnes x Reader
Warnings: None in this chapter. Slow burn to NSFW
A/N: Takes place after ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ with one major exception - Steve Rogers is not dead. He stepped down. This is in line with my Crossroads story. There will also be a parallel Steve story coming.
Part 2 or Master List
You paused, pointing the large kitchen knife in Bucky’s direction. “Straight or diagonal?”
He looked up from the box of black and white photos, “Huh?”
Holding the knife over one of the thick BLT sandwiches, you motioned which direction to cut. He shrugged. “Doesn’t matter.”
“Bull. Everyone has a preference.” You smirked. “It’s a universal truth.”
He looked back down at the stack of pictures. You waited. Finally he mutter, “Diagonal.”
You smiled, cutting his three sandwiches in half and plating them along side the stack of potato chips. He mumbled a thanks as you slid the plate to him. Taking your own, you sat down beside him. The box of pictures had been in the cabinet. Bigger than a shoebox, it was packed full. Unfortunately, few had any writing on the back.
He held one out, staring at it with sorrow in his eyes. The card stock was yellowed and the edges were worn. It was a slightly blurry shot of a couple sitting on a stone stoop. Judging by the clothes it was around World War I or thereabout. Bucky sighed heavily. “That’s my Ma and Pops.”
“Good looking pair.” You commented before biting into your sandwich.
“Ma was an angel.” He stared for a long time before continuing. “Pops was,” he shrugged. “He did his best I suppose.”
You watched him put down the picture with the others that he’d laid out on the table instead of the pile in the lid of the box. He fell on his food like a well-mannered starved man.
“Must have been tough.” You mused. “Taking care of a family during the Depression.”
“Didn’t see him much.” He said through a half mouth of food.
“How old were you then?”
“It was real tough from the time I was eight or ten to when Pops died when I was seventeen.” Bucky chewed thoughtfully for a while. “I remember being pretty angry, not seeing him around. Guess I never thought about what he was doing. Ma was good at canning and making this really good bean soup. She traded with others on the block. A jar of bread and butter pickles for laundry soap. Pot of soup for some eggs and butter.”
It was the most he’d said at one time, so you stayed quiet. He started on his second sandwich before continuing.
“I took whatever work I could, but Ma wouldn’t let us drop out of school. It was all odd jobs.” The corner of his lip tipped up. “Becca would take off with this little old German woman in the afternoons. They were just supposed to be going for walks, but she’d always came back with her little satchel full of greens and nuts or berries. I think they went foraging through the parks. Ma would make dandelion salads. Stevie would stay a lot. He loved helping Ma cook.”
“Rogers? Really?” You cocked your head. “I don’t really know him, but for some reason that surprises me.”
“Ma said the little punk actually made biscuits better than her.” He pointed to another picture, this one of three youngsters. A dark haired boy, maybe fourteen, had one arm around a smaller blond boy. His other hand held that of a little girl with long dark braids. “That’s us.”
“You look happy.”
“Yeah,” he wiped his hands after finishing the last of his food. He picked up the picture, staring at it. “Tough times, but we always managed to have a laugh. At least when Steve wasn’t getting his ass beat.”
You chuckled as you drank down the last of your lemonade.
By the late afternoon, you’d gone through most of the drawers and cabinets in the sitting room. A recycle bin overflowed by the back door. Multiple boxes were set aside for Bucky to rummage through and one box of vintage magazines were set aside for sale.
Bucky sat in a chair on the front porch, reading his sister’s journal. He hadn’t moved in more than four hours. You took a couple beers from the fridge and wondered outside. Holding out the open bottle to him, Bucky gave a nod of thanks before turning back to the page.
“I think I’m going to order food to be delivered tonight.” You commented. “Pizza okay?”
“Sure.” He didn’t look up.
“What do you want on it?” You asked as you pulled up the order form on your phone.
“Whatever.” He paused. “No pineapple.”
Smiling to yourself, you ordered a large traditional combo and medium veggie. Sitting quietly, you shopped on your phone for some of the stuff you would need for the house. The two of you drank your beers. Bucky continued to read, lost in his sister’s words.
It was easy to sit in silence with this man. You didn’t feel awkward about it. Neither of you said a word until a car pulled up forty minutes later.
A woman climbed out of the dated Honda with a large pizza carrier. She gave a tired smile. “I sure am glad this wasn’t a prank. This place has been empty for years.”
“No prank.” You met her on the porch steps. Her left eye sported the purples and yellows of black eye. “I, ah, I hope you don’t mind that I put your tip on the app. I don’t have any cash on me.”
“That’s great. Thanks.” She opened bag, pulling out the pizzas.
“Looks like that’s painful.” You leaned your head a little. “You okay?”
She nodded, though her body tensed. “Playing with my friends Rottweiler and he accidentally head butted me.” When she looked up, the woman went absolutely rigid. You looked over your shoulder to see Bucky standing at the top of the stairs, his brows drawn together in a hard scowl. The woman swallowed hard. “Here’s your food. Thanks.”
You watched her leave in a hurry.
“She was lying.” Bucky sighed.
Turning, you joined him on the porch. “About the shiner?”
“Yeah. That was made by a fist.” He frowned.
“Maybe she got in a brawl.” You led him back to the kitchen.
“With someone a foot taller than her.” Bucky scoffed as he pulled two more beers from the fridge.
“You could tell that?”
“Most likely a downward hit, judging by the bruise.” He shrugged, tossing the cap into the bin. “What? I know things.”
He dug into the pizza as seriously has he had the sandwiches at lunch. You watched him eat three pieces before you asked. “What do you think of Becca’s journals?”
“I think I would have liked Archie.” Bucky slowed, and picked at the edge of his pizza. “Seems like he really made her happy. She was proud of him, too.”
“Good.” You smiled.
“She missed the city.” He said after her ate more. “Missed going dancing and to the shows.”
“It’d be hard running away from everything you know.” You agreed.
“Becca felt like it was worth it.” He pushed his plate away. “She didn’t want to risk her husband. He was the only family she had left.”
This silence weighed heavy. What could you say? Sorry you were a brain washed assassin for Hydra while your little sister was facing down the mob?
He suddenly stood. “I’m going to read some more. Do you mind leaving that out? I’ll eat more later.”
“Yeah, no problem.” You rinsed off your plate. “I’m going to take a bath and head to bed early. Do you mind locking up?”
“I’ll take care of it.”
You gave him a gentle goodnight and climbed the rear stairs.
He watched you leave. Almost unconsciously, he cleaned up his dinner plate and straightened the kitchen. When the sound of the bathtub filling reached his ear, Bucky leaned heavily on the counter. His face crumpled. His breath turned shallow. It felt like he would explode. Tears burned in his eyes. Sorrow. Relief. Pain. Joy. He had no idea how to process it all. So many conflicting feelings battered his chest from the inside.

Blank Out (Bucky Barnes x Reader)
SUMMARY ››››› Bucky Barnes has a list of names–amends he needs to make. When he gets to yours, he finds the amends process a bit more…difficult than it should be.
WORD COUNT ››››› 1,700-ish
WARNINGS ››››› language
A/N ››››› Oh hey, look at me jumping on that Falcon and the Winter Soldier trend. This is the Y/N version of my OC fic. Exactly the same but for people who prefer Y/N. Lemme know if you want to join the tag list!
Bucky stood outside of the door, staring at the wreath of brightly colored fabric leaves, a small wooden sign hanging in the center with the words Give Thanks looping across it.
He doubted there was going to be much thankfulness for him on the other side of the door.
He shifted his weight from one foot to the other.
This was supposed to be getting easier. Dr. Raynor told him it would get easier.
But for someone who hated bullshit so much, she really spent far too much time talking out of her ass. Because this wasn't easy.
Easy would be surreptitiously wiring a million dollars into each of their bank accounts from the HYDRA accounts he still had access to.
Easy would be taking out anyone who had been involved in the decision to give him the order.
Easy would be breaking the damn rules.
The rules aren't meant to make your life easy, James. They're meant to disconnect you from the Winter Soldier. That's the whole point of making amends, isn't it?
He'd give anything to get her damn voice out of his head.
Bucky propelled himself up the front porch steps before he could change his mind. Like he had last yesterday.
He rapped on the front door, accidentally knocking the wreath sideways as he went to pull his hand away. Instinctively, he reached out to right it, centering the sign and taking his hands away slowly to avoid a repeat of the situation. Bucky checked over his shoulder, half expecting Sam's stupid little robot to Zoom into view with Sam cackling and making some dumb quip about metal butterfingers. But Redwing wasn't there. The only other person outside was an old man mowing his lawn in a dingy white undershirt and grey sweatshorts. Bucky's lip curled in disgust before turning back to the door--the sound of locks clicking out of place putting him on alert.
"Hello?"
Bucky blinked, his eyes meeting those of the woman before him. Her eyes were striking, pinning him to the spot and pushing all semblance of thought out of his head.
"Can I help you?"
Bucky blinked, nodding at her. Right. He was here for a reason. Not to stand like some teenage boy who'd just seen the girl next door for the first time.
"I'm looking for Y/N Y/L/N."
"You found her."
He blanched. "You're Y/N Y/L/N?"
The look of vague curiosity that had been gracing features markedly shifted into a look of annoyance. "Believe it or not, Y/N’s come in all shapes, sizes, and colors."
Fuck this. He needed to get out of here. There was no way he could have this conversation now.
"Still want to talk to me?" She asked, eyebrows arched and arms folded across her chest.
No.
Sam's laughter echoed in his head, as if he'd been here to witness the exchange. And that's why he stayed. Out of spite.
He nodded. "My name is James "Bucky" Barnes and--"
"Wait a second," she held out a hand and raised an eyebrow on him. He did as she asked, stopping mid-sentence with a sinking feeling in his gut. "You're the Bucky Barnes?"
He nodded, resigned to the fact that this was going to be his worst attempt at amends yet. "Yeah."
"Well," she breathed, dropping her arms. "If I'd known I was meeting an Avenger at my door, I might have put on some pants."
His eyes ran down from her face, noticing for the first time that she wore a dressing robe that barely swept the tops of her knees. Her bare knees.
His mouth opened as if he had even the faintest clue how to respond to this and then his jaw moved up and down for a new second as if the motion of talking would bring words. While it didn't muster an apology or some other decent thing to say, he did manage to utter a single word: "Shit."
She snorted at the reaction before smiling for the first time and shaking her head. "If you want to come in and wait, I'll go get changed."
He shook his head. "I can wait out here."
She was still smiling. Probably because she realized he was far more pathetic up close. "Suit yourself, but there's eggs inside."
"I'm good," he said, forcing himself to give a tight smile that didn't reach his eyes. She nodded, leaving the door open behind her as she disappeared inside the house--as if he'd change his mind.
He should leave right now. Turn around and come back a different day when he could at least function like a mostly human being. Bucky ran a hand through his hair, scratching the back of his head.
The quick, sharp sound of pattering bare feet broke his stream of thought, as another girl came to the door, standing before him with her hands on her hips. "We were having breakfast, you know," the girl announced, her voice dripping with sass. "Now we have to wait until she's done talking to you. And I'm starving."
Bucky raised an eyebrow. "Shouldn't you be….not talking to strangers?"
"Shouldn't you be eating breakfast?" she countered.
"It's ten in the morning; I ate already."
"We were supposed to have breakfast an hour ago. But Ravi--"
"Rocio, leave Bucky Barnes alone," Y/N's voice called from elsewhere.
Before he could fully process how odd it was for him to use his name, the little girl's hands dropped from her hips and she stared up at him, mouth agape and eyes comically wide.
"You're Bucky Barnes?" she asked, her small voice awed.
He nodded with a deep sigh and another forced smile.
"What happened to your hair?"
"Got a haircut," he shrugged.
She furrowed her brow at him, her little eyes peering intently at his face. He wasn't sure the last time someone had looked him in the eyes this long. Nobody except Steve had looked him in the eyes since he made it out. The corner of his mouth twitched up. She nodded at him, having composed herself so her little face was serious once more. "I like this better."
"Thanks." He couldn't keep the amusement from his voice. He didn't even really try.
A thought seemed to hit her, lighting up her whole face with excitement. "Wait right here. Don't move. Promise." He nodded again and she raised her eyebrows at him, giving him a stern look.
"I promise," he said, clearly stating each word.
She nodded at him. "Ok. Good." And then she turned and ran into the house, her feet making far more sound than they should for someone of her size.
Y/N reappeared shortly thereafter with a faint smile on her lips, dressed in a copper colored sweater and jeans. "Sorry. You're her favorite."
"She's cute."
What an idiotic thing to say.
"Wish I could take credit," Y/N said, shaking her head. "She's my sister's. I'm just the babysitter on duty."
There were some more sounds of scampering and Rocio was back at the door wearing a long black satin glove, reaching about halfway up her bicep. There were lines streaked across it in gold marker to make it look like it was made of metal plates.
"I made an arm like yours!" she announced, almost whacking Y/N in the stomach as she extended her arm out for him to see.
He couldn't believe what he was seeing. He'd seen Halloween costumes for sale and shirts with one of the sleeves modeled after his arm, and pictures of guys with an arm wrapped in tinfoil. All of them had been with his old arm--his silver one with the red star. The arm that belonged to Him. An arm made to invoke fear.
This was the arm of a protector.
She deserved more of a reaction than a small, breathy, "Wow."
"Will you sign it?" Her eyes got even bigger if possible, and Y/N started to shake her head, bending over to talk to the little girl, but Bucky stopped her.
"You got a marker?"
"I'll go find one!" Rocio disappeared again, leaving him and Y/N alone on the doorstep. She was closer this time, and he could hear her talking to herself and rustling through different drawers.
Y/N turned her attention from her niece back onto Bucky. "So, why is Bucky Barnes on my doorstep?"
"I uh--when does your sister get home?" he asked, eyes focused in the direction of Rocio's sounds. He swallowed, tearing his eyes away and back up to hers. "I should probably tell both of you...together."
The playful amusement that had been on her face disappeared as she stared at him, as if trying to see inside his head. Like she would want to see what was inside of his head.
"She'll be here around three."
He nodded, saved from a response by Rocio's re-appearance, waving a silver sharpie in the air. She offered it to him, and he plucked it out of her hand, taking hold of her toothpick of an arm in one hand and signing his name on the inside of her bicep. Where she could hide the signature if she wanted to.
Bucky handed the marker back to her as Rocio held her arm out, trying to catch sight of his name.
"Rocio," Y/N prodded, gently.
"Thank you!" she chirped, before turning and literally skipping back inside. "Ravi--look!"
He liked her.
"That was really kind of you," Y/N said, warmly. "I think you just made her year."
He shrugged.
"Although, I have a feeling that this is all she's going to talk about for the next week," Y/N sighed, shaking her head. "Anyway, Lilly will be back around three if you want to come back then and share whatever secret serious news is it that you need to tell us together." Her voice was teasing, and Bucky's mouth lifted into a smirk.
"I'll be back then."
"Great," she smiled politely. "See you then."
He nodded, wishing her goodbye before turning down the stairs.
So much for getting easier.

I don't care about MBTI stuff. Tell me more about birds.
What do you want to know? I have a good general knowledge as it was my major for a while, but my specialty is psittacines (parrots).
Random facts I guess:
Owls have facial disks that funnel sound to their ears, which are asymmetrical. This helps them better pinpoint sound.
Most birds just have a cloaca (one hole) through which they shit and reproduce. Ostriches have a kind of penis though and so do ducks (and theirs is like a corkscrew). Female birds have a single ovary. In flying species, the gonads shrink when it’s not the breeding season, to reduce the amount of weight the bird has to carry.
Flighted birds have a bajillion adaptations for flight. Their keel bone is larger, their bones are honeycombed to make them light yet structurally sound, and they have a multitude of air sacs that allow them to take in a LOT more air with every breath.
In falconry, you use a hood to keep birds calm, but hoods can’t be used on owls, due to the shape of their heads. You use a sock instead. (this is based on an Intro to Raptor Husbandry course so if you’re a falconer feel free to correct me)
Parrots like small, dark, enclosed spaces because they nest in tree cavities. If you have a pet bird, you don’t want them scoping out locations like this.
Birds have regional dialects.
There’s been all sorts of studies related to bird song, like are they born with it or do they learn it from their parents, and if they learn it, how early. (sadly I don’t recall the answers, but it’s pretty darned young)
They can feel magnetic fields and see polarized light (at least migratory species).
Parrots can absolutely know what they’re saying when they use language, if they learned those words in context.
Parrots can count up to six and corvids can count to seven.
Cassowaries basically have to be treated like modern day velociraptors and you’re supposed to carry a 6″ thick wooden shield to protect yourself when in their pen.
If you find red stuff in a commercial chicken egg that’s not an embryo. Hens can totally lay without a male (in laying breeds, male are euthanized as chicks). As an egg goes through the reproductive tract, layers are added on--first the yolk, then the albumen (white), then the shell and pigment. The red stuff is usually tissue from the oviduct that’s sloughed off. Sounds gross, but it’s perfectly edible.
Commercial eggs in the U.S. must be refrigerated as they are washed, which removes the protective cuticle. Freshly laid eggs can be kept on the counter as long as they’re not washed.
The U.S. has pretty shitty legislation when it comes to animals. We have the Endangered Species Act, which was designed to be a good thing but causes lots of problems. It’s meant to help preserve native species, but states often add nonnative CITES animals, which limits who can keep said animals and how they can be transported. This means that private aviculturists working to preserve endangered species often can’t get new bloodlines, because sales across state lines are prohibited. The AFA had to fight for years to get the golden conure removed from the ESA.
Most birds have a shitty sense of smell. They don’t need it. Vultures and albatrosses are an exception.
Speaking of albatrosses, they spend most of their lives in flight.
Mating “for life” doesn’t mean monogamous. Birds pair up to raise chicks, but it’s not uncommon for both sexes to get some on the sly, especially if this dude has a better nest site and that dude has better plumage.
Cuckoos are nest parasites. They’re amazing and horrific. Prime example of nature is brutal.
Speaking of brutal, shoebills have two chicks which then fight highlander style because there can be only one. The parents will feed the winner and let the other baby, if it survived the fight, die of starvation.
Birds are fucking modern dinosaurs.

⤑ TAKE A PEAK
you’re really making me add this to a read more again, huh.
5. closet
raleigh: his button up shirts & nicer tee shirts on clothes racks with sweaters on the top shelf and shoes on the floor below. he doesn’t have too much room in it otherwise. liz: her closest is too complicated, fuck that. but, while the majority of it is white, the clothes are organized by shades based on the electromagnetic spectrum. surprisingly, most of her shirts are her nasa polos & the only consistent outfit within the closest. because she usually has less than 10 outfits at a time. she swaps out clothes during the seasons, and resales clothes after wearing them a couple times. her sweaters, her personal ones or stolen ones, are kept in drawers within the bedroom alongside jeans & workout attire. like clothes, she has a selected amount of shoes on a bottom shelf. while it won’t be as big as this closest, this has the general vibes. jamie: like raleigh, his button up shirts and any suits. maybe some of his track wear that shouldn’t wrinkle. nicer tee shirts his tennis shoes... and of course his horse gear hiding in the corner :3 maddie: her clothes are just swung on racks when in a hurry to actually clean. if it’s in order, it’s because liz cleaned maddie’s room. most of her shirts are band shirts and leather & jean jackets.
10. pantry
raleigh: box pasta (he loves bow ties because they look like bow ties), rice, cereals (mainly honey nut cheerios, and he’ll try all the flavors), chips (like pretzels, cheetos, popcorn), and kraft mac n’ cheese. then basic baking stuff like cake mixes, sugar, salt, like, typical foods that’s mixed around where he has to scan for a bit to find what he wants. only his teas are organized. and dog food on the bottom. liz: her apartment does not have a pantry. rip. but they way she has food organized is precise. jamie: his studio does not have a pantry. but it would have box stuff similar to raleigh... but vegan versions... alongside having the most spices out of everyone else and protein stuff. and his would be organized like liz’s. maddie: her apartment does not have a pantry. it would probably be empty besides her box of animal crackers if she did tho. thank goodness she lives with liz.
15. bookcase
raleigh: his bookcase holds some of his prized possessions and is one of the few thing he actually keeps organized in his place. and here’s how the bare bones would look like. those science fiction books from his piano instructor, a completed lego models of the millennium falcon and the enterprise as “bookends” with some of his preferred star wars & star trek books, though the models take up more space on that shelf. then everything else is just books with some other trinkets that are vague in my head for now. liz: so she has two bookshelves. the first one is in the living area that most to hold themed books and props to whatever theme caitlyn or liz arranged, though now it’s a combination of whatever maddie and liz want to share in that space. this is what that one would look like, though different items. within her bedroom, liz has a plain shelf with image of it here with several books ordered by the dewey system. she may swap out books when she fells it’s too full, but some of her prized book, like her little women book from her childhood or her engineering textbook from her first class with dr. kumar, will always remain. even if liz may read more on her phone (considering it’s cheaper with the library app), she likes to have physical copies of ones she does enjoy or preorder. oh, slightly off topic, but she’s definitely one of those that reads all the books in bill gates or obama’s book lists every year; she should really join a book club. once liz gets a house, you bet that her bookshelf will look like this one in her study. jamie: this dumbass doesn’t read. maddie: while she doesn’t have too many books for a bookshelf, she does have a vinyl rack. or well, something liz built for her that’s similar to this but maddie would paint lighting bolts on the sides because the sides reminded her of lighting bolts. but she has a simple vinyl rack to store her vinyl that will become canvas for her paintings. and, as for the living room bookshelf, she has one of her 70s cameras she found at an antique store that liz cleaned up for her alongside some of her favorite vinyls to show off or, well, not necessary favorite favorites but ones people will recognize & fit with liz, like fleetwood mac rumors. then, there’s a succulent that liz doesn’t touch that maddie keeps care for; his name is pumpkin because of the orange pot.
20. refrigerator
raleigh: leftovers from takeout, since normally one takeout plate lasts for two meals. then there’s ketchup, soy sauce, milk, eggs, butter, yoghurt (blueberry or oreo preferred), jelly & jam (mainly blueberry or apricot & there’s even blueberry orange marmalade because why not) some veggies, mainly bell peppers & mushrooms, cheeses, chicken, & hot dogs for his dogs. liz: since maddie & liz would share one, i’m listing things that mainly liz’s here. so she has the meal prep meals in containers throughout the work week. leftovers also last longer for her, about three meals. then there’s meats, mainly chicken & salmon (her favorite), basic things like eggs & milk etc, apple butter, jelly & jam (mainly blackberry & grape), worcestershire sauce, & ketchup. jamie: like, all the veggies you can think of. vegan cheeses, oat milk, cilantro, pickles, jam & jelly (mainly strawberry) leftovers. maddie: the avocadoes in the fridge is because of her. there’s also bbq sauce, sriracha, & leftovers. oh, the the mango habanero jam is hers too.
25. five most recent google search history
raleigh: 1. names for shades of yellow / 2. beekeeping in urban setting / 3. bee species in california / 4. the most common bee in the world / 5. bees in winter liz: her google search history has been cleared so i can’t share it :/ jamie: 1. football season updates / 2. how much irrnekg (accidental when holly laid on the keyboard / 3. how much is 8 m in feet / 4. inheritance issues / 5. manage a farm long distance maddie: 1. fairy wings reference / 2. fabric paint in local stores / 3. sour candy lyrics / 4. blinking guy meme / 5. keyboard sale
30. netflix watch history (or just clumping all the streaming services here)
raleigh: the mandalorian, david attenborough’s animal documentaries, x files, dr. oakley yukon vet and yes he cries at every episode don’t judge, indiana jones trilogy no fourth liz: downton abbey, fixer upper, pride & prejudice, the biggest little farm, i am greta, and i guess space documentaries... oh, and the lotr trilogy like, three times already :/ jamie: the office, gilmore girls, flashdance, like all of audrey hepburn’s movies but he tries to hide all of this with fast & furious and cobra kai and action stuff maddie: halloween, nightmare before christmas, the chilling adventures of sabrina, glow, the get down, sailor moon, wayne’s world, magica madoka, the breakfast club

Yaak Valley, Montana and the Black Ram Project
In all the reading I do daily over the past several years, I had not learned about the “Black Ram Project” proposed for the Yaak Valley in Montana. In fact, Yaak Valley is new to me. I learned about it by reading the most recent essay contributed by Bill McKibben to The New Yorker. I was surprised that this project hasn’t been part of the national environmental media scream, because it’s a horrible project involving the timber industry, with serious ecological implications for the area.
Let’s start here. Here’s a map, showing the Yaak Valley:
Here’s a photo (and PS, based on this photo, I want to live here):
Here’s the story, from Bill McKibben and The New Yorker:
The Forest Service—an arm, somewhat anomalously, of the Agriculture Department—is about to decide on a timber sale in the Yaak area of the Kootenai National Forest. The Black Ram Project, if approved, would consign a vast swath of old-growth forest and grizzly-bear habitat in the Yaak to clear-cutting, and would run roads through one of the wildest places remaining in the lower forty-eight states. As it happens, I’ve had the chance to hike that wilderness: the writer Rick Bass, who lives in the area and has made it his life’s work to try to keep this region ecologically intact, took me over hill and dale years ago, and I can still remember the squelching, buzzing beauty of the place.
By all accounts, the Forest Service is on the brink of approving the Black Ram Project. It’s a holdover from the Trump years, when the ex-President (for whom a forest is the place your golf ball goes when you slice it) mandatedhuge increases in timber cuts in national forests. He explained them as necessary to reduce the risk of forest fires. But, as many biologists pointed out, if there’s any worth to such plans, it comes from thinning the smallest trees, not chopping down the old-growth ones that timber companies prize—and which are on the block in the Yaak. Indeed, if you’re interested in averting catastrophic global warming (and the fires that it sparks), one of the easiest, cheapest ways to do it is to leave large old trees standing. That’s why Bass has been calling for a “climate refuge” in the Yaak. He says that we need to “protect the great lungs of our country, the northern tier of inland rainforests, which still offer some hope for sequestering carbon in the old spruce and subalpine fir forests, which can hold 80 percent more carbon in the soil than the drier pine forests.”
In a statement, Randi Spivak, the Public Lands Program director at the Center for Biological Diversity, which is helping fight the proposed clear-cut, described the project as “the last gasp of Trump’s horrifying mismanagement of our national forests and protected wildlife habitat,” adding that “what little old-growth forests remain after decades of clearcutting must be protected. We’ll fight to stop this destruction, and we hope the Biden administration will reverse it.” Like the Line 3 and Dakota Access pipelines, the plan to gut the Yaak would almost certainly not be proposed in today’s political climate. But tomorrow’s actual climate depends on stopping these examples of zombie Trumpism; we’re so close to the climate cataract that we can’t afford to let inertia and interest carry us any farther down the river.
From what I’ve read, this project was approved by the US Forest Service a week ago. Can the new administration stop it?
Rick Bass, the writer referenced by Bill McKibben, appears to be the motivating driver behind the efforts to kill this project. Rick Bass is the Chair of the Board of the Yaak Valley Forest Council. Click on the link to learn more about the Council, the area, the Black Ram Project and whatever else you want to know about this. From this website, I learned about the animals that call this place home:
Aside from the Grizzly Bear, other threatened/endangered/sensitive species occur in this ecosystem including: inland redband rainbow trout, bull trout, wolverine, lynx, fisher, harlequin duck, torrent sculpin, sturgeon, coeur d’alene salamander, great gray owl, westslope cutthroat trout, flammulated owl, short-head sculpin, boreal owl, peregrine falcon, wavy moonwort, mingan island moonwort, towsend’s big-ear bat, small lady’s slipper, common loon, sparrow’s egg lady slipper, kidney-leaved violet, maidenhair spleenwort, black-backed woodpecker, round-leaved orchid, green keeled cotton grass, bog birch, crested shield fern, spalding’s catchfly, linear-leaved sundew, northern golden-carpet, northern bog lemming, and water howellia.
Wow!

Self-quarantine Day 38 / Shelter-in-Place Day 23:
So today I got into my car and, bearing two gift bags each containing one (1) frosted kulich courtesy of Seattle’s own Piroshky Piroshky, two (2) onionskin-dyed eggs, and two (2) vegan banana muffins for the hell of it, and set off to provide some (Orthodox) Easter goodness to my in-laws. I am pretty sure I have never seen less traffic on Metro Detroit’s I-94 or I-75 on a dry, sunny weekday during peak rush hour (4:30-6:00 PM). Traffic on the main artery roads was light but the freeways were pretty damn open. Many businesses clearly weren’t open, but unlike in 2008-2009 they’re not shuttered and for sale or burned so this apocalypse has a different vibe than the last one. It wasn’t so much “Shit, everything’s gone” as “All the people are gone.”
I saw a Peregrine Falcon in Grosse Pointe Woods and a large, dark buteo hawk in east Dearborn. The grass lining the freeway embankments was lush green, as yet untouched by mower blades, and studded with daffodils. Forsythia at its peak yellow fluffiness brightened many a patch of civic land along the way.
I did a drop-and-dash with both gift bags. After I left, my father-in-law texted to say he was sorry he hadn’t heard my knock at the door and wished I’d been able to come in for a visit. Sorry dude, that is a) a bad fuckin’ idea-- he is immunocompromised from medical treatment rn! and b) totes illegal at present. Some people, no matter their academic/field of trade intelligence, just can’t get their heads around this shit. No. We ain’t comin’ inside for a few. NO.

I live in Tustin (socal) and am thinking about going to SWCC when it comes to Anaheim. Could you talk a little about your SWCC experience? Do you think it was worth it?
it’s absolutely worth it. i went to both orlando in 2017 and chicago this year (obviously) and i will say that while they were both really different experiences, it was totally worth it each time. if you have the money when tickets go on sale and plan to go every day, i recommend trying to get the multi day pass. both times i waited too long and had to buy individual day passes (completely missed saturday this year) and that got even more expensive that it already is.
in orlando, they didn’t have the lottery and panel reservation system they used for chicago so a lot of my time was spent in the overnight queues for the 40th and tlj panel wristbands, then in more queues for wristbands for other major panels with no overnight, THEN in more queues for seats at the time of the panel. basically, i was really focused on going to a lot of the big panels so i didn’t have a whole lot of time for other stuff. i walked the floor once, went to the official store, and did one photo op with mark. but i also got to see the 40th and tlj panels, as well as mark’s personal panel and tribute to carrie. being in the room for those four panels was 100% worth the cost. i also got to make a lot of cool line buddies!
we did make the mistake of going to the closing ceremony though which when you factor in the time queuing for the wristband and then queuing for a seat, was kind of a waste of the last day.
i know it’s controversial, but i did like the lottery system they used in chicago and hope they use it again for anaheim because i have heard some Stories about those overnight queues in 2015. i hope they execute it better though because there were a lot of people who entered every lottery and didn’t win for a single panel or vendor. if they can manage to find a way that guarantees every badge holder (especially multi day) at least one win, that would be better.
we didn’t focus too much on panels this time (only went to ix, tpm 20th anniversary, and the publishing panel friday night), so i spent a lot more time on the show floor and got to talk to a lot more people because we weren’t stuck in one place for 12 hours. we got to walk the entire show floor multiple times, hit up the store, some vendors, go through the badass millennium falcon replica, do a bunch of the 501st photo ops, plus ops with ian, hayden, alan, and katee (who smelled SO GOOD and was SO NICE omg), it was great.
all of the people i’ve talked to at both celebrations have been the coolest. it’s so much better in person than when stuck in the tumblr fandom bubble. even when we had differences of opinion, the conversations were always friendly because you’re talking to people who love star wars like you love star wars. no one is perfect though and every now and then you might come across a rotten egg (shoutout to the lady at our hotel who was an ass to the staff over key card), but there’s just such a positive energy because like i said, everyone there loves star wars and you can just feel that love fill the entire building.
you’re gonna want a lot of cash and some comfortable shoes, though.

State of the planet: 2018 edition
Well here we are, it's time once again for my now annual review of the year we just finished up. When we take some time out of our New Year's celebrations to recognize that while it seems like we just went through 365 days of pain and frustration, there was a smattering of good things that happened as well.
Here's some of them:
Scientists in China cloned two monkeys via Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer, a major development toward's the potential for this technique to be used for regenerative cloning in the future
A new drug designed to combat Ovarian Cancer has begun clinical trials. Early results show that half the patients taking the drug are now Cancer free with no sign of the Cancer returning
Chinese scientists have developed rice that will grow in drought conditions. They plan to cover about 10% of the desert in the UAE with this rice for farming use.
An effort is underway to save the Northern White Rhino from extinction, using frozen sperm implanted in eggs from Southern White Rhinos, the hope is that this process will be able to revive the species in the future
A Ukrainian company is placing Solar Panels around Chernobyl to generate Solar Power. They plan to use the existing infrastructure to eventually generate up to 100 Megawatts of energy
101 cities around the world are now getting 70% of their power from renewable energy sources. In a related story, 56 cities in the United States have committed to going 100% renewable by 2050
The World Health Organization reported that Paraguay has now completely eradicated Malaria, other Latin America nations are close to doing so as well
The Ocean Cleanup Project has begun an initiative to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. They're aiming to remove at least 50 tons of garbage from the ocean every year
The Ozone is beginning to repair itself. At current rates, the Northern Hemisphere should be fully repaired by 2030, with the Ozone Hole in Antarctica sealed by 2060
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge was opened, it's the world's longest sea crossing bridge
Chinese scientist He Jiankui announced that he's modified the DNA of twin infant girls in an attempt to make them resistant to HIV
According to a report by the International Telecommunications Union, 51.2% of the world's population is using the Internet
Qantas launched the first commercial non stop service between Australia and the United Kingdom, the route is flown by their 787 fleet
Cinemas opened in Saudi Arabia for the first time since 1983, the first movie shown is Black Panther
Diplomatic talks took place between North and South Korea, with both nations committing to the removal of land mines from the Demilitarized Zone between the nations
The Basque separatist group ETA announced its dissolution
The Supreme Court of India decriminalized homosexuality
Ireland citizens voted to repeal the nations ban on abortion in a national referendum
Voting turnout for the US Midterm elections was at a 50 year high
Michigan was the latest state to legalize recreational use of Marijuana, Canada also voted to allow sale of Marijuana.
The overall crime rate for the year is expected to have dropped by 2.9%
11% of the US Population is expected to get a boost to their credit scores
Homeownership rates for Americans under 35 are now at just over 36%, the highest since 2013
Americans gave over $400 Billion to charity this year, a record high
The 2018 Winter Olympics were held in South Korea
The 2018 World Cup was held in Russia with France claiming their second title. It was also announced that the United States, Mexico and Canada will host the 2026 World Cup
The Philadelphia Eagles won their first Super Bowl over the heavily favored New England Patriots
Tiger Woods won his first PGA tournament since 2013
The Michigan Basketball team did so much better than anyone could've expected, winning their second consecutive Big Ten tournament, and making their second Final Four appearance in 5 years
The Michigan Football team had a decent year as well, posting their third 10-3 record under Jim Harbaugh as well as winning a share of the Big Ten East division title (but because two of those losses were to Notre Dame and Ohio State, Michigan fans will be forced to spend the offseason being miserable twats again)
Justify won the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, the second horse to win the title in 3 years (rather remarkable considering the previous title drought was nearly 4 decades)
SpaceX launched 21 Falcon rockets this year, including the first Falcon Heavy rocket which sent Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster into interplanetary space
NASA had a busy year as well, launching the TESS spacecraft to search for ExoPlanets, the Parker Solar Probe to explore the Sun's atmosphere, and the InSight lander which successfully touched down on Mars in November
ESA launched the BepiColombo spacecraft to explore the planet Mercury, the first mission to the planet in over a decade
The OSIRIS-REx sample returned spacecraft arrived at the Asteroid Bennu.
Finally, the New Horizons spaceprobe will conduct a flyby of the Kuiper Belt Object Ultima Thule just after midnight tonight!
Remember all that? Good. Because that's where I'm at right now: December 31, 2018, with just over 11 hours left in this year.
You, dear reader, are in the future. And by the time you read this, it's very likely that for you 2018 will be over. Relegated to the books. And you've probably read a bunch of articles and blogs and tweets about how we just went through a year of infinite pain. Which is why I'm hoping that this missive finds you after you've already read all those other things.
Because our minds tend to place the most emphasis on the last thing we experienced, and I want your lasting memory of 2018 to be that all those things I listed above happened this year, and nothing can ever erase them.
Now this is the part where I say something nice and worldly to tie up the events of this last trip around the ol' Sun. I try my best to come up with some theme or other that brings it all together into a coherent picture.
I think the word I would use to describe this year is "Revelation." Because I think we can all say that this year, it's not so much that we learned things, but things were revealed to us.
We've all been in this situation before. We think that we've got everything figured out, we have all the answers. And then all of a sudden we uncover something that completely shatters our perceptions and kicks our foundation out from under us. And based on all that's happened this past year, I think it's safe to say this happened to all of us at least once in the preceding 12 months.
Perhaps someone did something you never thought they would do? Or something that seemed to be amazing turned out not to be as good as you thought? Or maybe your way of viewing the world now looks totally alien to you?
Revelation can be a very traumatic thing to deal with, and I can tell you from experience that when your entire perception of reality is challenged, you become unsure about everything else. Doubts creep into your mind, and you start wondering what else it might be that you're wrong about? It's the kind of feeling that can make you feel completely alone even in the middle of thousands of people.
But Revelation can also be a good thing.
Sometimes something turns out to be even better than you were expecting. Or you discover that you actually are much more respected and valued than you thought you were. Or maybe you look around and realize that things aren't actually as bad as they seem.
Even if you have to deal with the Revelation of a harsh truth, you can still find the positive out of that. Sure you can choose to become cynical and jaded and let it consume you, or you can choose to be proactive about it.
Sure, things weren't what you thought they were, but that's okay. The world didn't come to an end, you still have much to be thankful for, and you can now use the knowledge that you've learned to become wiser about how to live your life.
So this is the part where I usually say that there's one more awesome thing that happened this year, but you're going to tell me what it is. Tell me something good that happened to you during 2018.
This time however, I'd like to try something different.
In addition to telling me something good that happened to you this year, I'd like you to give me the biggest Revelation you've had this year. What was the most surprising thing that was revealed to you?
Now I understand that it probably won't be as pleasant of a memory as whatever awesome thing that happened to you this year was, it may even cause you distress just thinking about it.
If that's the case, embrace it, because you are distressed. But not over whatever it was that you were forced to confront, but rather the loss of what you thought the world was.
But don't let it consume you. Take the truth that was revealed to you and apply it. Learn from it and resolve to use that truth to strengthen your resolve for this next trip around the Sun.
Things aren't always what they seem, and they often don't work out how you planned, but that's not always a bad thing. Because the amazing thing about this world is that things have a way of working out anyway.
So remember the good times, but learn from the Revelations. When you do that, you'll be that much closer to being the person you want to be.
Have a good day, a great month, and an AMAZING 2019.

Give Thanks (Bucky Barnes x OC)
SUMMARY ››››› Bucky Barnes has a list of names--amends he needs to make. When he gets to M. & L. Kaminski, he finds the amends process a bit more...difficult than it should be.
WORD COUNT ››››› 1,700-ish
WARNINGS ››››› language
A/N ››››› Oh hey, look at me jumping on that Falcon and the Winter Soldier trend.
They were a light brown--taupe almost, standing out brightly in contrast to her long, full eyelashes.
"Can I help you?"
Bucky blinked, nodding at her. Right. He was here for a reason. Not to stand like some teenage boy who'd just seen the girl next door for the first time.
"I'm looking for Mina Kaminski."
"You found her."
He blanched. "You're Mina Kaminski?"
The look of vague curiosity that had been gracing features markedly shifted into a look of annoyance. "Believe it or not, people who look like me aren't all named Singh or Patel"
"Bucky Barnes as in Captain America and Bucky Barnes?"
She snorted at the reaction before smiling for the first time and shaking out her long dark hair, waves tousled together from having probably just woken up.
But Ravi--"
"Rocio, leave Bucky Barnes alone," Mina's voice called from elsewhere.
Mina reappeared shortly thereafter with a faint smile on her lips, dressed in a copper colored sweater and jeans. "Sorry. You're her favorite."
"She's cute."
What an idiotic thing to say.
"Wish I could take credit," Mina said, shaking her head. "She's my sister's. I'm just the babysitter on duty."
There were some more sounds of scampering and Rocio was back at the door wearing a long black satin glove, reaching about halfway up her bicep. There were lines streaked across it in gold marker to make it look like it was made of metal plates.
"I made an arm like yours!" she announced, almost whacking Mina in the stomach as she extended her arm out for him to see.
"Will you sign it?" Her eyes got even bigger if possible, and Mina started to shake her head, bending over to talk to the little girl, but Bucky stopped her.
"You got a marker?"
"I'll go find one!" Rocio disappeared again, leaving him and Mina alone on the doorstep. She was closer this time, and he could hear her talking to herself and rustling through different drawers.
Mina turned her attention from her niece back onto Bucky.
"Rocio," Mina prodded, gently.
"Thank you!" she chirped, before turning and literally skipping back inside. "Ravi--look!"
He liked her.
"That was really kind of you," Mina said, warmly. "I think you just made her year."
He shrugged.
"Although, I have a feeling that this is all she's going to talk about for the next week," Mina sighed, shaking her head. "Anyway, Leela will be back around three if you want to come back then and share whatever secret serious news is it that you need to tell us together." Her voice was teasing, and Bucky's mouth lifted into a smirk.
"I'll be back then."
"Great," she smiled politely. "See you then."
He nodded, wishing her goodbye before turning down the stairs.
So much for getting easier.
