#AmpersandJune17 [12/30]: Brisk • Faking Normal was one of the first ever books I stayed up past midnight to complete in one sitting. @riwreviews bought it for me as a present and I started reading it immediately after I opened the package. Only took me three or four hours to read. It's a magnificent contemporary. • What's the last book that kept you up late reading? . . . . . #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookphotography #booktography #books #instabook #instareads #reading #read #booknerdigans #bookworm #booknerd #bookish #booklover #bookaddict #bookblogger #aussiereaders #ausyabloggers #FakingNormal #courtneystevens #bookstagrammer

Faking Normal By: Courtney C. Stevens
Faking Normal is an incredible story. It explores the emotional struggles of a girl who’s having trouble identifying her own experiences, and how she feels about them. The author Courtney C. Stevens herself, went through a situation similar to that of the main character Alexi. These experiences help bring the book to life with a vibrant realism that would be hard to find in other novels. Alexi’s way of dealing with her experiences is similar to those found in other books of a similar storyline (ie. Exit Pursued By A Bear, Asking For It, Speak, and The Way I Used To Be). However, her experiences are different enough from other novels, that it makes the book worth reading; It’s definitely not a “copycat” book.
One of my favorite things about the novel, is that it leaves you guessing until the very end. Readers have no idea what happened to Alexi; even when you think you do, you still don’t. One of my least favorite things, is the way the author uses the character Bodee in the text. He went through so much suffering and trauma, it could have filled an entire second book. He shouldn’t have just been portrayed as a supporting character; he should have had more of his own story. I feel that perhaps too much focus was placed on Alexi, it made Bodee seem almost...artificial.
I recommend this book to high school level students or mature eighth graders. Alexi and Bodee’s experiences are both very, very real. I believe it is books like these that are helping to pave the way to a more educated an alert future. I believe the book is worth reading even just for the author’s letter in the back of the book to the reader.

Guys? Meet @Quartland and #FakingNormal. I HAVE FEELINGS ABOUT THIS BOOK, OKAY? It's poignant and powerful and full of purpose. I meant to post quotes while I read, but I couldn't put it down long enough to follow through. So, go Courtney for that one. Also, for anyone who hasn't experienced rape/abuse and has wanted to learn about one of the quiet ways it destroys lives, read #FakingNormal. In the book, Courtney has captured the confusion and the guilt and the silence that hangs over this kind of situation brilliantly. Last but definitely not least... Hey, Courtney? I want a Bodee. Kay? Kay. Thanks! #books #booknerdigans #yalit #Instagram #wordpress #FakingNormal

Faking Normal
This week's new book is Faking Normal by Courtney C. Stevens. Steven's debut novel revolves around Alexi Littrell who has a secret she's too embarrassed to tell. Instead of letting anyone know she hides from everyone and scratches at the back of her neck, trying to make the pain inside duller.

Here's what the publishers have to say:
Alexi Littrell hasn't told anyone what happened to her over the summer. Ashamed and embarrassed, she hides in her closet and compulsively scratches the back of her neck, trying to make the outside hurt more than the inside does.
At school, nobody sees the scratches or her pain. The only person she connects with is the mysterious Captain Lyric, who writes song lyrics on her fourth-period desk for her to complete. With pencil marks and music, Alexi carves out a comfortable space for herself as she and the Captain finish each other's songs—words on a desk feel safer than words spoken aloud.
But when Bodee Lennox, the quiet and awkward boy next door, comes to live with the Littrells, Alexi discovers an unlikely friend who understands her better than anyone. He has secrets of his own and knows all about suffering in silence. As they lean on each other for support, Alexi gives him the strength to deal with his past, and Bodee helps her find the courage to finally speak up.
With her powerful, moving debut novel, author Courtney C. Stevens emerges as an extraordinary new talent to watch.
If you are looking for an edgy realistic novel be sure to pick up Faking Normal today.
