It really is forever important (and adorable) that Jellal refused to break up the fight between Chelia and Wendy during the GMG and simply opted to monitor the danger instead - to protect them, yes, but also their effort. Especially Wendy's.

It says a lot about the dedication he already had to Fairy Tail's spirit and aim, and his potential future role within the guild; he's very emotionally intelligent, and always seemed to understand when Wendy needed to be protected or pushed, or where to burgeon hope (as when he went to support Natsu in his fight against Zero). Just one way he's both a foil and parallel to Laxus, too...I view him as more of Fairy Tail's future "dark sentinel" and Laxus as more of its humbled-but-flashy leader.

Actually, that's not the only thing about 100yq's writing that's irksome. I feel like many characterizations of characters get butchered to some extent, it feels chaotic and, and this is another factor why I personally couldn't get myself to sit through watching 100 Year Quest thus far (next to how my favorite characters get treated), is how no episode passes without unnecessary fanservice and sexualizing of one or more female characters. Sometimes multiple scenes in one episode.

I feel like the sexualization + sexual harrassment depiction as joke has been amped up and I can't bear it anymore.

Fairy Tail used to be such a comfort show and it + the characters still are to some extent, but I just personally cannot sit through it anymore.

Celestial Spirits Eclipse Arc Rant Part 1/?

Okay.

Let me preface this by saying, I tried so hard to like this arc on my rewatch.

Filler arcs and I have always had a strained relationship, but I was surprisingly optimistic about this one.

When I first saw Fairy Tail, I absolutely DESPISED the Key of the Starry Skies, so much so that I was scared to rewatch it.

From...this whole blog, you can probably tell that I had a change of heart. In fact, I ended up adoring a character that used to be my all time least favorite.

So, I went into this filler arc with a new perspective.

However, unlike the Key of the Starry Heavens, I think revisiting this arc has only made it worse for me.

Now of course, we can't really judge a filler arc up to the standards of a well planned canon arc. Not that it's a bad thing to do so, but I feel it automatically puts said filler arc at a disadvantage.

What we can do however, is compare it to another filler arc.

So, in this multi-part rant, I'll talk about why Key of the Starry Skies worked for me, and why the Celestial Spirit Eclipse Arc failed.

First, I've been really negative in the introduction. So, why not go over the positives of this arc! No matter how bad I do think it is, there are always some things that I think should be given credit.

The concept itself is very interesting!! There is so much potential to be had with Celestial Spirits, who from this point have been shown to serve Lucy(and Yukino), wanting a rebellion for their own individual freedom.

I like some of the Eclipse! designs a lot! I particularly like Eclipse! Taurus and Eclipse! Virgo's designs!(but I suppose that is down to personal preference)

The variety of fights was nice to see, and some of them are iconic.

Gray's dance battle with Eclipse! Cancer has to be one of the most memorable parts of the arc for me!!

Unfortunately, that's about where my praise for it ends.

Before I get into specifics, I just wanted to say that it's totally cool to like this arc! I'm glad you're able to enjoy it!! (つ≧▽≦)つ

To stop this section from being too long for now, I'll focus on just one character that bothers me. Truth be told, it's the character from this arc I have the most to say about(surprisingly).

Eclipse! Virgo was really uncomfortable to watch. Her awful, sadistic personality and love of seeing others suffer was just...not for me.

Normal Virgo is actually one of my favorite spirits, so seeing her become all mean and ruthless wasn't too fun.

Now, that sounds a bit familiar...maybe even a bit hypocritical of me.

A filler woman who doesn't mind hurting others, specifically Lucy, and gets a thrill from doing it. A filler character who believes that they are righteous in punishing people who oppose them in a militaristic fashion, having little care for the consequences…a filler character that the guild at first considers absolutely rude and obnoxious...

I might be absolutely crazy, but Eclipse! Virgo is just if Mary Hughes sucked and lacked any depth

Now, I'm incredibly biased, and I know that. But look at these two side by side and TELL me they aren't thinking the exact same thing.

It's not even the fact that most of her character traits feel recycled from Mary, but that they based a filler character...off of another filler character.

Mary Hughes is a character I love because she is flawed. She does horrible things, and expects to get away with them. The difference between her and Eclipse! Virgo is development.

Mary gets to go through a bit of a mini-arc in the latter half of season five. Eclipse! Virgo, of course, does not.

A major problem I have with having a filler arc like this is that it does feel very rushed. We have to go through each Zodiac in a span of a 22 episode arc. The Key of the Starry Skies did have 26, but also a more linear plot.

There are only 6 members of the Legion Platoon, compared to 12(13 if we count Ophiuchus) Celestial Spirits. It leaves for these Eclipse! variants to only leave their first impressions.

For Virgo, it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Even if we disregard that factor, Virgo is almost a flanderized version of Mary Hughes, taking all her more evil, grating traits and putting it into one character.

Of course, it's all very likely a coincidence.

However, Mary Hughes as a character displays that the show writers were able to create a character with those traits that works.

I haven't seen Fairy Tail in a long time. But I just couldn't stop thinking about this headcannon that just popped into my head like two minutes ago. What if dragonslayers had an instinct to hoard shiny things. Like it's so bad that the dragonslayers as a whole are aware of it. Like if two of them spot the same shiny, it's basically look at one another, set challenge, claim the shiny first.

Gajeel: GIMMIE THE SHINY!

Natsu: NO WAY! YOU GOT THE LAST SHINY. THIS ONES MINE! *proceeds to shove the shiny in his mouth*

Meanwhile, everyone in Fairy Tail guild is used to it since they have 4 dragonslayers in the guild and anyone not familiar with their hoarding are looking in horror as Gajeel is trying to pry the shiny out of Natsu's mouth.

Edit: Something else that popped up into my head is that Wendy is often given shiny things by the guild because they just want to make her happy. Treat her like the sunshine she is. What they don't know is that she is one of the most passive-aggressive hoarders out there. Like one of the other dragonslayers gets to a shiny she had her eye on first.

Wendy: Oh no, it's fine! You can have it.

Is what she says, but her arua is just radiating with the intent that she would step over their corpse to get the shiny. (As she's still Wendy, she would take time to give them proper rest after getting her shiny.)

Dragonslayer: Well yeah I can have it I grabbed it first.

Wendy: *smiles with malicious intent while she puts a hand on their shoulder* Just remember who your healer is.

She then leaves them to panic because they just pissed off the healer. OH GOD, THEY JUST PSSED OFF THE HEALER. Wendy's revenge is leaving them to panic on whether or not they just planned their funeral early. (Ofc Wendy will help them if their gravely injured. But don't think for a second that means she's forgiven them.)

Edit edit: Guy's what if: Around Gajeel joining the fairy Tail guild, people of the guild thought that Natsu's obsession with shiny things was just that. A Natsu thing. It was, in fact, not just a Natsu thing. As they would come to learn that Gajeel would pick fights with Natsu over shiny things. Erza, being the self-appointed peacemaker, thought by throwing the shiny into the horizon would make the fighting stop. She could not have been more wrong. She flinched back when BOTH dragonslayers snapped their heads at her( they were watching the shiny vanish into the horizon.) Gajeel she had been expecting, and even prepared for, ready to put him in place if need be. It's when Natsu glared at her that she wasn't prepared for.

Natsu: Hold her down.

They both make a break for it, grabbing her and forcing her down.

To Erza's displeasure, Natsu starts tickling her. In front of the guild.

Gajeel: Tickle her until she cries.

Natsu: Noted.

He only stops after she passes out. She, of course, gets her revenge, but has learned her lesson. That event had been labeled "The scarlet incident."

Post note: ngl completely forgot about Laxus. He's just really picky with his shiny obsession. Also, not to mention he'd rather die than let people catch him obsessing over a shiny, like those two idiots down there.

It's only when Wendy joins the guild that they learn it's a dragonslayer thing. Thus blowing Laxus' cover anyway.

Post note edit: also maybe being a second generation dragonslayer has something to do with him being better at controlling his urge to collect shiny things. Maybe sting would be absolutely feral when it comes to shiny(s) while rouge is more laid back. Or maybe it's a switch. Some days, third generation dragonslayers are downright feral to collect shiny(s), and other days, they can cull the urge to collect shiny(s).
