Mary Hughes and Self Reflection

Okay, so I was thinking about Mary(as I do), and I realized something:

Guttman is a living embodiment of her flaws.

He exemplifies her cruelty, her brash nature, and most importantly her ignorance.

Even his juvenile speech patterns in a way try to mock the way that she speaks.

It's true that everyone in the Legion seemed uncomfortable once Guttman was there, but Mary seems the most uncomfortable in my eyes.

Because here stands someone who is terrifying. Someone who is a dangerous criminal.

Someone who doesn't deserve to be in the Legion Platoon.

But when Mary looks at Guttman...she sees herself.

The same person who took to extreme and brutal measures to secure the clock hand.

The same person who was careless with not only her actions, but her magic too.

The same person who blindly followed the Zentopian church's orders, not even taking a moment to think about what she was doing.

This...is her.

And she'll let those bad traits eat away at her until her guard can be let down.

Never.

I think that it's no surprise why Lapoint specifically chose to pair them up:

It's because they're so similar.

Unlike Guttman, though, Mary, despite all of her flaws, despite all the wrong she has done, is still human.

She can care about others, which I think is shown best with her repeated worry and protection of Coco.

Even with all of that, how is she supposed to stand a chance against Guttman?

It's only after Mary meets Guttman for the first time that her character begins to change.

The biggest moment for her is when she confronts Guttman so Natsu and Coco can escape.

But she isn't just confronting Guttman.

She's confronting herself.

She wants to be a good person.

She wants to be someone that Zentopia would be proud of.

She wants to be a good role model for Coco.

It's only then, that she decides to develop as a character that is less malicious, less hot headed, now making the choice to learn and take more than one side of the dilemma.

Because Guttman is everything she could have been if she relished in the worst, darkest parts of herself.
