lena khalaf tuffaha is a poet, essayist, and translator and a first-generation american, immigrant, and expatriate of palestinian, jordanian, and syrian heritage. she is the author of two poetry chapbooks and three books of poetry: arab in newsland (two sylvias press, 2017); water & salt (red hen press, 2017), winner of the 2018 washington state book award for poetry; letters from the interior (diode editions, 2019); kaan and her sisters (trio house press, july 2023); and something about living, winner of the 2022 akron prize for poetry, forthcoming from university of akron press, 2024.

tuffaha also co-curated the collection poems from palestine at the baffler alongside fady joudah, and translated many of the pieces.

Music and Nature - Unit 7

I never really thought about the connection between music and nature until this prompt. But the more I think about it, the more I realize that music and nature aren’t separate at all. Some songs carry the sounds of nature directly. For example, Limerence by Yves Tumor, which has the soft patter of rain in the background. Other songs, even without natural sounds, take you to a place where nature was part of the moment.

For me, that’s Fairuz. Her music in general brings back memories, but Ana La Habibi and Elouda L’minsiyeh specifically take me right back to family road trips across Canada. Back in 2017, we drove through Quebec, Ottawa, and Montreal, and Fairuz was always playing. Whether we were on long highways or weaving through smaller roads surrounded by trees, her voice just fit the landscape. Something about the way her music flows, almost effortlessly, made it feel like it was part of the scenery. The roads, the changing skies, the quiet moments when everyone in the car just stared out the window. Even now, if I hear those songs, I’m not just listening to music; I’m reliving those road trips.

Fairuz’s music isn’t just tied to being in a car, though. It’s the soundtrack to home, too. I think about waking up to my mom or dad humming one of her songs while making breakfast. The sun would pour through the backyard door, and on good days, I’d take my plate outside and eat with the breeze. Those small moments are what made her music feel natural, like it belonged not just in my ears but in the environment itself.

This made me think about what the textbook says about sense of place. According to Interpreting Cultural and Natural Heritage, interpreters aim to help people develop a connection to a place that makes it more than just a physical location (Beck et al., 2018). That’s exactly what Fairuz does for me. Her music doesn’t just remind me of those trips, it makes me feel in them, even years later. It carries the feeling of sitting in the back seat watching trees blur past, the cold air hitting my face when we stopped for breaks, and the excitement of heading somewhere new.

Nature in music isn’t always about nostalgia, though. Limerence by Yves Tumor is a perfect example of how music can use nature’s sounds to create a mood. The rain in the background makes the song feel calm but also kind of lonely. It reminds me of watching rain hit the window, that feeling of wanting to stay in bed all day while the world outside keeps moving. The song itself doesn’t explicitly talk about nature, but the rain makes it feel grounded. Like it exists in a real, physical space rather than just coming from speakers.

I guess the biggest takeaway from all this is that nature and music are connected in more ways than we think. Sometimes it’s through sound, like rain or birds woven into a song. Other times, it’s through memory - how a song can take you right back to a place, even if you haven’t been there in years.

Ah... akhirnya moment ini datang juga. Gak pernah kepikiran kapan aku akan menulis ini, sampai ahirnya setelah segala deadline menanti, aku tulis juga. Halo teman-teman terbaik di Tech in Asia, this writing is for you!

Friday, 27 August 2021 will be my last day at Tech in Asia Indonesia. Seperti percaya nggak percaya, tapi memang nyatanya harus melepas perjalanan yang sudah ditempuh hampir 4 tahun bersama TIA. Sedikit di luar rencana hidup, tapi aku yakin perjalanan selanjutnya akan lebih menyenangkan, doakan ya!

Kayanya baru kemarin aku join TIA, tepat seminggu sebelum ulangtahunku, yaitu 13 November 2017. Dulu, sebelum keterima aku lagi no hope banget sama hidup, sampe yang memotivasi buat dapet kerja secepatnya pun hanya karena ingin dirayakan ulangtaun bersama teman-teman kantor ahaha. Lucunya, ternyata di tanggal 19,20,21 November itu ada 3 orang yang berulang tahun, Mas Dipta (Editor in Chief, alumni juga skrg), Aku, dan Lidya (Head Marketing kita yang cihuy banget). Makasih banget sudah mewujudkan citacita recehku saat itu untuk merayakan ulangtaun di kantor baru, wkwkw. 

Long story short di tahun pertama kerja di TIA, punya beberapa teman kerja yang ujung-ujungnya bisa diajak jadi teman curhat hidup, teman sehat olahraga bareng, dan teman karaoke selama lembur. Haha. Halo tim Podcast Pantry Ekky, Mas Vicky, Mas Putra, Mas Adit, Mas Risky, Jesse, Kak Teto, Baba, Mas Cepot dan beberapa alumni Septa, Hadi, Mas Aria, Atha, Alifah, duh banyak! Ga lupa juga squad makan siang di pantry ku, jamaah #makanapaguys ku Mba Dini, Mba Ain, dan Mba Diah my luv <3 yang selalu berdebat di jam jam kritis mau pesen kopi mana lagi hari ini, mau gofood makan siang apalagi, dan tentunya yang paling seru adalah debat pembagian total bayar setelah dipotong diskon promo Grab HAHAHA :)) Kapan-kapan kita order Fried Chicken Master lagi ya!

Oh My God... time flies. Hampir empat tahun, dan aku udah banyak menyaksikan momen-momen people come and go di TIA, yang ahirnya sekarang aku yang harus pergi. Aduh. Sedih.

Untuk Lead terbaikku, Mas Putra, HALO MAAAAS YA ALLAH TERIMAKASIH, makasih banyak Mas Put, gw minta maaf banget banget kalau selama kerja sama Mas Put gw banyak kurangnya, banyak nanya, atau banyak mau. But you are the best! I learned a lot from you, and you always give me new challenge yang di awal gw merasa ga bisa tapi in the end gw bisa karena dorongan lo juga. Makasih banget Mas, semoga kapan-kapan bisa kerja bareng lagi di lain kesempatan. :D Tentunya, terimakasih juga atas saran-saran tentang kehidupannya yang walopun dijawab sambil dengerin Via Vallen, atau sambil kerja, atau sambil haha hihi, tapi means alot! Terimakasih sudah banyak dukung gw juga :) Maaf ya Mas, kalo udah burnout gw suka curhat sampe kelepasan nangis. Huhu.

Hey! How's it going? I usually start with the introductions so, for anyone who doesn’t know, who are you / where are you from? I’m Thoom. I’m from Beirut but I live in Chicago now.

What are some of your early musical memories? When my father would blast Fairuz, Sabah or Soap Kills in the morning to wake us up. I also played violin for six years.

How has Chicago influenced you musically? Obviously the city carries with it a lot of significance in the history of dance music. There is something beautiful about being in a city that feels so empty, vast, and industrial and going into spaces (shows/clubs) that both reflect the city and exist in contrast to it. I am not historically tied to anything here and Chicago is so segregated that I really feel in the two years I have lived here my experience has been very limited, musically and otherwise. But part of why performing and seeing others perform in Chicago is special is because these are some of the only spaces where people from all over the city, who would not have encountered otherwise (because Chicago is so spread out) are together. There is a lot of potential in that. It feels visionary when it’s good. I think about these implications a lot when I perform here and it has also made me interested in curation. Chicago can be rough but I have met some of the most inspiring people here.

Last month you released your debut Blood and Sand EP through Oakland-based Club Chai. I'm interested in the relationship between the ideas behind your EP's conception and Club Chai's own intentions as a collective, particularly in terms of working within and with (diasporic) cultural narratives and the ways in which they weave through communities and communal experiences and spaces. Did those shared philosophies have much of an impact when the EP was coming together? Definitely. One of the main reasons I started making music was because I found people like FOOZOOL and 8ullentina (Club Chai founders) who were working with the intersections of middle eastern sound and club. Finding a community online when I couldn’t find it irl helped with feelings of cultural alienation and motivated me to be in conversation. I am very happy I released my first EP with Club Chai and got to work with them. They understood and trusted my instincts from the beginning and it’s because we have similar intentions and diasporic narratives.

On Blood and Sand there's a constant slippage between danceable and non-danceable rhythms and passages both from track to track and within the songs themselves. Was that always your intention? What draws you towards playing with the form and tension of a track in that way? I don’t know. At this point, it’s instinctual and I just feel like I’m banging on a virtual drum and screaming. I will say that emotionally, I am able to transition from one sentiment to another very quickly and drastically ;). I was thinking of Blood and Sand as a long track that I split and processed into four.

The video for حركت السكوت (No Speech), shot and directed by Yumna Marwan and edited by yourself, has this semi unnerving and partially comedic sense of timing to it with pseudo setpieces and your performative slapstick or chaotic interactions with the environment. How much of your background as a visual artist influenced your translation of the track into a video format? This was a collaboration between my sister, Yumna and I. As my older sister, she has always directed me, so the power dynamics were obvious and she picked most of the places we shot at. It took some time for me to figure out how the audio and visuals communicated. I knew I wanted to shoot in front of the civil war monument. I didn’t know there was a Lebanese army checkpoint right in front of it (even though its supposed to be public) and we could only shoot from one angle and only for fifteen minutes. In the video, I am dancing in front of the monument and in front of me is Yumna shooting on her knees and like ten army personnel behind her staring at me dancing in my fishnets and the angle of Yumna’s camera. Towards the end, their boss (Mr. Hulk) started walking over and almost had us delete all the footage but we packed up quickly and fled. To me– dancing in front this monument (which symbolizes the end of the civil war) and the Lebanese army, which held it hostage, encapsulates both the comedic paradox and absurdity that I always end up talking about in my work–visual or otherwise.

You mentioned in your recent WNUR interview that you're intending to move back to Beirut next year and have plans to start a group / space for continuing your music there. You also noted that experiments with sound in Beirut tend to operate more in the realm of 'high art' than something like dance music. When it comes to your production process is the overlap between the spheres of art and club music something you consider? Do you think that your position with regards to that would necessarily change? I don’t know if I am going back next year, actually, still have not decided. I don’t think they are mutually exclusive but being able to be in an art context has helped me critique my work in through similar processes. When I said that experiments with sound in Beirut tend to operate in the realm of high art, I meant that there are not many spaces that allow experimentation in sound unless it is under an art space context. When I performed in a warehouse last summer and played experimental dance music, I cleared the floor… No one wanted any of it. A man came up to me after and told me he liked my style, I was hot, but he was here to listen to “berlin-techno”. 

I think there is a push against this, and Frequent Defect has been putting on shows that obscure those boundaries. But what is especially interesting is that a lot of the music made by diasporic community is not well received by the country that it is reflecting or inspired by. I love thinking about the implications of that. The larger public wants exported entertainment. 

My dear friend and colleague, Jessika Khazrik, and I, started talking about these ideas and started a collective called Yakhtiii. We curate collaborations across different generations and media in dance music with a focus on electronic sounds emerging from Arabic taqsim, drone, noise–depending on what were responding to and the context. We both come from an interdisciplinary practice, so we approach curation through many different frames of reference and we’re planning for more events in the future.

Did you set out with a particular idea for this mix? Where and how did you record it? Not really, I recorded it on my bed when I was sad and lonely.

What do you have planned for the rest of 2017? Always planning for a catastrophe, buying canned food in case it happens. Working on an album. Saving up for plastic surgery? Calling my mum more often and being with my girls

If you had to pick something for people to listen to immediately after this mix what would it be? Anything on Country Music, the label. They release 8-minute tracks that I’ve loved listening to.

Jangan berseluar dalam / berbikini bila di depan anak, tiada istilah 'anak masih kecil tak tahu apa-apa'

"Budak lelaki itu kata, semasa dia kecil, dia selalu ternampak bapanya pakai seluar dalam di depan matanya selepas mandi. Ibu dan bapa fikir anak kecil lagi, tetapi mereka tidak sedar yang perbuatan mereka itu tersimpan dalam minda separa sedar anak-anak mereka. 

"Nak dijadikan cerita, apabila dia sudah meningkat usia remaja, dia terdedah dengan video pornografi. Anda semua pun tahu bahawa video lucah ini boleh menyebabkan ketagihan. Dah tonton sekali, akan tonton lagi berkali-kali. Bila tengok yang biasa, beralih pula ke hardcore s*x sehinggalah mencari video lucah sesama jantina. 

"Pada awalnya dia berasa janggal, namun lama-kelamaan rasa biasa dan condong ke arah itu. Bila sambung belajar ke sekolah berasrama, dibuli pula oleh rakan. Disuruh berbogel dan melakukan onani di hadapan pelajar senior. Mentalnya dibuli. Tetapi lama-kelamaan, ia menjadi perkara biasa dan dia semakin biasa melakukannya. 

"Bayangkanlah, dia pernah tengok bapanya berbogel semasa kecil, kemudian ketagih dengan video lucah sesama jantina sehinggalah dibuli seperti itu. Rasa-rasanya apa yang akan terjadi pada remaja ini di kemudian hari?" soal rakan yang membuatkan saya terasa sedih. 

"Adakah adik itu akan terlibat dengan gejala homoseksual?" saya menyoalnya kembali dan jawapan yang diberikan, "Ya!" 

Kawan-kawan yang baik hati, ini adalah salah satu kisah menyayat hati yang berlaku kepada remaja di luar sana. Masyarakat hanya melihat output; gay, lesbian, pengkid, biseksual, zina. Namun di sebalik semua itu tersimpan memori silam yang kompleks untuk dirungkai. 

Sebagai ibu bapa alaf baru, banyak yang perlu kita pelajari dan jaga. Benar, mereka anak kita namun ia bukan syarat untuk kita berbogel atau separa bogel di hadapan mereka. Aurat antara kita dan anak-anak perlu dititikberatkan. 

Jangan hanya berseluar dalam dan berbikini sahaja bila berada di depan anak-anak. Apa kita fikir rumah itu sama seperti pantai Los Angeles? 

Tuan puan yang disayangi, umum tahu anak kecil akan meniru apa sahaja yang mereka lihat. Segala perilaku ibu bapa mereka akan dipamerkan kembali oleh anak-anak. Anda pemarah, mereka akan cepat marah. Anda suka memukul mereka, mereka akan memukul orang lain pula hatta anda melakukan hubungan intim antara suami dan isteri pun mereka akan ikuti.

Ini kisah benar tuan-tuan. Kami pernah mengendalikan kes murid darjah dua yang melakukan hubungan intim (bercumbu dan meraba) dengan rakan sekelasnya di kala mereka baru berusia 8 tahun. Rasanya apa yang adik ini lakukan asbab nasfu atau hanya mencontohi perilaku ibu dan bapanya? 

Setelah disoal-siasat, rupa-rupanya adik lelaki ini biasa melihat ibu dan ayahnya bercengkerama di rumah tanpa malu. Dia melihat dan memerhati tindakan ibu bapanya. Menurut bapanya, itulah cara dia menunjukkan kasih sayang kepada ibunya. 

Kata-kata itu dikunci kemas dalam fikirannya. 

"Saya suka dia, ini cara saya tunjukkan kasih sayang kepadanya," kata murid itu mengulangi kata-kata bapanya itu. 

Innalilahi wainna ilaihi rajiuun.

Ibu bapa, caknalah perkara ini ya. Jangan sesekali kita tanamkan mindset, 

"Tak apa, anak masih kecil lagi. Mereka tidak tahu apa-apa," 

Sudahlah anak diberi gajet seawal usia bayi. Setelah diberi, tidak dipantau pula oleh ibu bapa. Anak kecil ini hanyut dengan dunia YouTube sehingga mereka menonton video yang tidak berpakaian. 

Nak menjadi ibu bapa bukan perkara yang mudah. Segala ilmu untuk mendidik anak-anak perlu dipelajari. Fungsi tubuh badan juga perlu dijelaskan dengan baik kepada anak oleh ibu bapa. Ikut tahap umur anak. Fungsi zakar dan faraj perlu diberitahu. Ini tidak, zakar dan faraj pun ditukar kepada istilah yang lain seperti burung dan pepet. Allahu, ia tidak lucah, ia proses mendidik anak-anak.

Tuan puan, soal buli di asrama, kita kena akui ia berlaku. Baik di sekolah biasa atau di sekolah aliran agama. Jika dahulu hanya sekadar dibuli basuh baju pelajar senior, kini ia ditransformasikan ke satu tahap yang dahsyat iaitu dibuli dalam bentuk seksual. 

Ibu bapa semua pun ambil tahu tentang isu pelajar asrama yang melakukan buli luar tabi'e kepada rakannya. Jika diulas isu ini, nanti kena saman pula. Takdir tuan-tuan. 

Ibu bapa  di luar sana, ketahuilah bahawa anak-anak adalah tanggungjawab kita bersama. Gali lagi ilmu, pratikkan. Mudah-mudahan anak kita terhindar dari zina, homoseksual, seks luar tabi'e, pedofil dan yang sewaktu dengannya.
