Kayn leaned back onto the sturdy base of the tree and closed his eyes. Today was his day, all to himself. Zed was at the Temple, and he didn't need Kayn's help today. Even if that irked him, he was going to make good use of his time alone. He had started by going into Navori and buying fruit from the marketplace with his allowance---being Zed's favorite does have its perks, including mangoes, pomegranates, and apples---and now he was here, enjoying the silence of the hills. Even Rhaast was silent, dormant at the moment. Kayn took a breath and settled further into the tree, determined to savor his one day of peace---  

"Kayn!" Zoe sung, dropping next to him from a portal. He inhaled sharply and opened his eyes, squinting at the ball of sunshine. So much for peace and quiet.

"What do you want?" he asked firmly. If he didn't entertain her, surely she'd get bored and leave.

"I just wanted to hang out! We could play hide n' seek, or tag! Or catch!" She summoned one of her stars, and Kayn subtly drew himself back. He's seen what those things can do. He exhaled pointedly, pinched the bridge of his nose, and looked at her. The way she was looking at him was so eager, he almost felt bad about what he said next.

"No." Zoe's face fell, and she scrunched her mouth. "We could do something less exciting... we could tell stories! Or watch the people in the market..."

"I don't want to do that."

Zoe looked up at him hopefully. "Well... maybe I could braid your hair?"

Kayn sighed. She clearly wasn't going away, and this was possibly the least destructive thing she could be doing. Unless she ended up blowing up his head. Actually, that was a real possibility. He pulled his braid in front of him; it was quite unruly, as he hadn't brushed it in a few days. He moved to remove the tie holding it together, when little hands reached out towards it. Zoe was looking up at him with her rosy little face, "Um... can I?"

Kayn took a moment, staring at her, before allowing her to grab his hair. He flinched slightly when she grasped the tie, expecting a sharp tug, but her grip was deceptively gentle. She gently unraveled his hair and moved effortlessly behind him, her hands running through his hair like water. Her fingers didn't snag at all.

Kayn very slowly relaxed as she combed her fingers through his hair, shivering when her fingers brushed against the exposed skin of his back. He was aware of every movement and touch, using his meditative breathing to keep from reacting harshly. It felt good.

Zoe's deft hands combed through his hair, admiring every strand. His hair was beautiful in her opinion, especially with the light waves and blue highlights scattered through it. Even the scent was nice, and she wondered what he washed it with. Maybe she could go to that other reality and bring him some product... the people in the mall really liked it. Thoughts like this ran through her head as she enjoyed the feeling of silky hair sliding between her fingers. Since Kayn wasn't complaining, maybe she could keep doing it. Little pleasures. Just another indulgence.

In an uncharacteristic show of vulnerability, Kayn relaxed further into her, placing his head in her lap. Of course he was still aware of his surroundings and especially her---ready to jump at any moment---but this was nice, and he'd indulge himself, just this once. She was being quiet, and after all, it was his day for hedonism. He allowed a miniscule smile and brought another pomegranate seed to his mouth.

The pair sat beneath the tree, a light breeze blowing by, tentatively enjoying each other's presence in silence. The fruit merchant peeked over at them again, and the customer in front of him finally looked behind him to see what he was staring at. His face paled slightly when he recognized the scythe leaning against the trunk of the willow.

"Is she... braiding his hair? Does she even know who he is?"

The merchant scoffed, "Funny you think that would change anything. That girl doesn't know fear."
