very first face tracking test for soap cats, I'm really happy with it! Definitely need to work on refining a lot of the shapes though

So! I'm getting a quest pro headset real soon, and that's why I'm making facetracking for soap cats. However this video is using ARKit data (iphone) from a really nice person in my discord who sent it to me. (i do not own an iphone/ipad)
I'm setting up all of this with the quest pro in mind, using the unified expressions standard, but i renamed the shape keys to arkit shape keys so they could use the same animation keyframes so i could see em in action before the headset arrives
if people aren't super familiar with how face tracking works, basically i have to custom sculpt a TON of face shapes that the tracking device blends between. This video is animating 50 of them, but I've made 70 in total! And I think it might end up being more like 72-74.. i skipped a few mouth shapes I thought weren't necessary. The actual amount of shapes i had to Sculpt is a little lower, since most of them need to be split up into left and right versions and some of them upper and lower too. But it's still a lot!
& a final note, this is seriously just my first pass at the face tracking. Documentation for what shapes to make and how to make them is a bit barebones, so I had no idea how it would all look together until I rendered out this video. I'm planning on making it look a lot nicer with way less clipping :)

Gryphon needs hind feet, better tongue, better chin/lower lip (more accurate to eagle), and for me to feather it with cards in the actual pattern birds are feathered in. I’m going to have Warren’s Fast Fur Shader beneath these feather cards, on the eagle skin, but I’m gonna lean into masking the fur fully out and stippling it in via external art program. So the sleek lion hindbody won’t have fur (it will have normalmapped fur texture) but the tailtuft will, etc, the insides of the ears will be fwuffy etc but the shader will be doing “down” beneath body feathers that I apply and use to control the silhouette. Instead of attempting to hold the silhouette on its own. And it needs primary feathers.

Alien Romulus review so spoilers because I'm so so disappointed after being told by every one how good it was and how great the effects were (you all lied to me) so so so long so so so so I don't know if it's worth reading
👍 Loved that they kept up the tradition of killing the people who smoke on screen first
👍 Technology design choices were so fun and did what Prometheus failed to do as a PREQUEL. Also failed to do what the movie itself should've done as a SEQUEL and kept notably similar design choices BUT STILL ADVANCE THE TECHNOLOGY?
👎 They made a group of people so unlikable or undeveloped that I didn't care if they lived or died.
👎 The cousins blatant bigotry against Andy came off mostly as racist AND ableist with no good reason whatsoever. Especially since it clearly wasn't justified by his mother's death because the synthetic in question that "caused her death" was justified in saving more lives over the few. His choice to leave his own family behind despite being so torn up about his mom too? And finally his weird breathing and hovering scene with the pregnant sister right after his girlfriend died was lowkey creepy and I hope it wasn't trying to imply he was the one who got her pregnant? Bottom line he deserved it and his death was the only entertaining one. Was that supposed to be on purpose?
👎 The boyfriend was a bland unlikeable character who failed to even be good enough for meat fodder + deserved to die for wasting screen time AND for letting his cousin be a racist dick to Andy despite them needing the for the whole fucking trip to happen. Worthless character.
👎 First facehugger impregnation being a woman. What a spit in the face.
👎 The fact that it was also a woman I didn't even know the name of! But had 1 more second of development than the rest and seemed like she could've been a cool character if the screen time wasn't logged by unlikeable men. Her alien birth scene was so tone deaf to the original horror of the series idk. I get not wanting to repeat the same thing but the worthless guys survived those facehuggers too easily for her to be the gratuitous birth fodder.
👎 Pregnant sister. I don't know how that could've been done differently but yea. Her boob slime was so. 🙄
👎 Her alien wannabe engineer baby thing sucked. It was so corny I laughed outloud I don't know how it could've been done better but making the aliens more humanoid but not in an uncanny way, like a weird trying too hard to be scary way, felt like a disservice to the viewers intelligence? The fact that it was a full sized thing in like 3 seconds too? No offense but wouldn't it be scarier to fight something small and newborn baby like instead of Grown Ass White Man #72
👎 Rooks facetracking shit was so gagworthy and bringing him back wasn't the tribute to the og movie like they wanted it to be. Remember how the big bang theory would make references by just naming randome nerd shit in succession? That's what he was. Just because you have a character come back doesn't mean it fits the theme of the movie you're developing.
👎 Rook's non-ambiguous characterization as evil. Just lame and defeats the complexity of the original character as well as how the synthetics have been developed.
👎 Her name is Rain and that's my name she wishes she was me so bad.
Rain was just so? Such an underdeveloped character who kicked ass and I appreciated her like? Waiting till Andy had seizure to help him out? I don't know. She just had no backstory or substance and Andy's whole character being there to protect her was fucking lame. Seeing her change that at the last bit was like yay development but then Andy gets killed so then it was just whatever.
Andy's character again, being there to protect Rain and not develop on his own. His disabilities being "cured" for most of the movie. Why the accent? Anyways I'm glad he was there because he was the shining star of the whole thing and even that felt a bit too on the nose as if they knew every one else was worthless.
The movie had a few jumpscares and the gore was nothing compared to ANY of the previous movies. Ultimately I felt nothing for the entire hour and half except for when the cousin got slimed, which I laughed. The mix of CGI was strange. 1 out of 10 as fuck! Do you think they're gonna make a sequel?

Before I worry about character modeling, I might need to experiment with avatar locomotion. So far I've only worked with avatar bases where everything has already been set up for me. The modeling, the bones, the weight painting, the blendshapes. After that I don't know what happens to the avatar. I know if you import it in and copy components over and match import settings with the creator's everything works. Because the animator has already been setup. Sometimes the other layers are set up too, not just using the vrchat humanoid defaults. Kepler kept it simple. But I've seen what those animation trees look like. Mayu's is uniquely complex. Khnfucat is more average I feel, at least for a derived avatar. And then there's the humble kepler that is very easy to breakdown or set up from scratch.
Again I've never messed with full body yet. I don't know what breaks it. I don't know why some avatars work better for fullbody than others. Facetracking it's easy to throw on a vrcft prefab on an avatar that already has all those blendshapes, and if I studied the expressions and was crafty with setting up the shape keys myself, that is completely doable. There are still certain things I don't understand animator wise, like how to disable visemes when running an animation state that affects the face. But I imagine the answer is pretty simple or easy to find with the bases at my disposal.
But legs. Why is it that some avatars completely break when using fbt? What's the difference between an avatar that reverts to crawl animation every time you move an inch vs one that maintains your posture even while moving? What do I need to take into consideration when I rig my own avatar? When would I need to start making changes to the humanoid avatar unity rig. There are parts of the process that is either sitting right in front of me, or I know absolutely nothing about yet because I haven't done it from start to finish yet.
I almost want to test that by either using my existing kepler fbx and building a completely fresh animator with my own animation clips by hand, or taking random non-vrchat model from online somewhere and making it into a vrc avatar so I can study the build up process. It'll be a pain to set up mmd blendshapes, but everything else should still be something I can take care of. I know there aren't too many components that go into a barebones avatar like the varg or kepler. And the kepler only had one animation layer, which was the fx one. With what I know now could I completely rebuild those layers, parameters, menu/params, and animation state trees myself and personalize it?
The more I work on these different parts of the avatar, the more it feels like I'm observing avatar creation under a microscope, and seeing all the finer details of the process even fellow retexture artists like zeno might miss. I'm 70-80% of the way there it feels like to doing things like azuki and cyan does. But I also know their level of expertise is master level in the scope of vrchat. Not only can they build their own base or derive one, they've added all these extra things on top of it and keep producing clothing and other assets too. And I'm right at the tip of the iceberg. Azuki in particular building out these massive blendtrees that are difficult to read if you haven't used blend trees much. Which means any little mistake I've made will be obvious to them and fixable for them like with my kepler tail or the lack of sound delay. If I want to impress or at least be respected in the same breath as them, I have to be able to cover everything. Make every part that is janky right now professional and nice looking.
I'm no longer competing with Zeno and OkamiiYuki. I'm competing with giants. The scope of avatar customization by retexture artists is insanely limited. You can get by knowing very little but being good with substance painter and photoshop programs. The further down the rabbit hole you go the more you see, the more basic everything you were doing just a second before feels like. Because your understanding of the process has expanded. You build more and more of a bird's eye view of the entire process from start to finish. One could easily get by and find respect just doing retextures commissions for people and other basic avatar related unity work for them that's relatively easy for someone who knows vrcfury and a bit of mecanim. But why stop there when you are halfway on the roadmap to see everything.

Okay the loop the loop totally exploded when I tried to fix some other thing up with the puppet, so now it just comes and gets you when someone drops you without any aerobatics, but it looks pretty good, I just need to fix the timings on it. (and integrate facetracking, finalize tailring toggle, finalize sock hue radial, replace original expressions).
