Ok I was having a wave a depression and started rereading your short stories, I was wondering the mafia fell one in the gardens, was that bought for her or is that one of the "families" many houses they have and he picked the prettiest for her and where is boss in this scenario? And how would boss react to knowing his brother has kidnapped a human and is using one of their safe houses or spent money on a human that is not bringing in profit?
Wah, hope you feel better soon!
As for your questions- it's Sans' house, he has a few. He may have bought it just for her, in anticipation for taking her as his own, after she told him about how much she loved big gardens and the ocean. He wanted somewhere she would love. He wanted her 'stay' with him to be as nice as possible.
Now... for the interesting part. What does Boss think of all this?
Initially, Pap wouldn't be happy about his brother spending summer playing around with a human. Instead of working, he's hiring bicycles with her and taking her to hidden beaches. Wasting their resources getting his people to follow her and make sure she stays safe, buying a tiny apartment so she doesn't suspect he's wealthy, spending his money on restaurant trips and taxi rides and essentially goofing off. Especially when Sans starts talking about romance, getting her to settle down and stay with them instead of going home... it sounds childish. A waste of time.
... But, after a while, Boss would actually start to approve of Sans chasing her like a lovestruck schoolboy. Why? Because she changes Sans. Though Pap has never met her, he can see the effect this human is having on his slob brother- Sans sharpens up. He starts reading to be more interesting to talk to. He starts taking care of himself, cleaning his room, dressing better and talking more, he stops acting so irresponsibly. He stops drinking and smoking so much, and he stops gambling altogether. He has no other romantic or sexual interests in his life, just this human. Pap starts to see how serious Sans is about this... and he really likes the fact that his brother has FINALLY started taking something seriously.
Sure, Sans is spending money on her. But the amount of money he spends on wooing one human is nothing compared to the amounts he used to spend feeding his various terrible habits.
Boss hasn't even met her yet... and he already vehemently approves the match.

2024 reads / storygraph
The West Passage
medieval fantasy set in a giant crumbling palace of traditions with forgotten origin, ruled by giant eldritch Ladies
when winter weather comes in the middle of summer, and a beast below the palace begins to rise, two teens from Grey who have suddenly gained a lot of responsibilities set out on separate journeys to the other towers to find a way to stop it, and meet all sorts of strange people and creatures along the way
world where pronouns/names are based on people’s roles
tons of cool medieval-style chapter illustrations by the author
#the west passage#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#ooooh this is really interesting!!!#it’s like. you take those weird medieval illustrations and add some eldritch horrors and some alice-in-wonderland weirdness#and turn it into a strange fable-like adventure#it took me a little to get into it - I wasn’t sure about the writing style or characters initially- but it grew on me!#There’s very little detail about the world in the beginning but once I got a bit more into it and was like oh there’s just#weird and quirky little guys scattered all over this.#I was having trouble envisioning things and looked up the author half way through to find his art for it!#(I listened to the audiobook so was unaware there are also illustrations in the book) - that definitely refined my understanding of the vib#I didn’t actually have a look at all the chapter illustrations in the book til after and oh my god - obsessed#There’s so many of them and they’re perfect. I also enjoy the chapter titles.#And I think it’s one of those books that (for me) could teeter on the edge of like or dislike depending on surface level elements#and it went in the right direction 👍#there’s a tiny bit of romance (or: a relationship that has a romantic element) but not very much. and it is queer#also the worldbuilding kinda reminded me of keys to the kingdom (vaguely)#but like if the House was less populated and ur just following a random denizen who knows nothing travelling around. i should reread kttk#I know it means Ladies like Saints. but also every time my mind reads it as *sleasey man voice* ladiesss#oh also moment of appreciation for kuri huang cover art too

When the ocean howls your husband disapears.
It doesn't come as a surprise after months spent together, with his face turning to appraise the horizon upon its first call. His eyelight - soft as you speak his name - shoulders low and cradling you without touch - sharpens to daggers with another shout of the wind. His hackles raise - strong form solidifying into something more -
He changes then. But one last squeeze of you hand assure you that he is still yours. And, with your squeeze in return, you assure that you are his.
The waters swell and climb your bluff as he leaves. Hiding the port and raising the ships. Once the rain begins none can dock safely. None from the mainland can take the sea-worn bridge. But that becomes second to his vessel going further under the tears of the sky; Leaping and dipping in the clutch of the screaming seas.
The cold stone does nothing to warm you once he leaves your sight.
You like to think - perched upon the sill, an old coat of his the only thing between you and the chill - that he goes to ward away the storm. His beautiful skull - warm and heavy when you cradle it close - hardening upon sight of the sea gods that threaten to wash away your home. A snarl - seen once, but burned into your brain by his rage - threatening to tear apart those who threaten the peace you've made together.
It's a long and raging battle - each missed attack of the sea crashing the bluff of your fortress - the water threatening to collapse the foundation - swallow you whole - but, as his energy wanes, he might see you awaiting his return. See you in his coat - yearning for when you next feel his embrace - and gain the strength he need to make his final strike and ward off the ocean once again.
In your mind he comes back victorious each time, for never once has his boat failed to come back upon the storm fleeing it's pursuit.
And ever once has he failed to hold you as though starved from your days long separation.
Scenario that's been plaguing me bc @aka-indulgence keeps ENCOURAGING the brainrot
Consider; you are married off to a mysterious lordly skeleton monster. Despite the crack in his skull and his difficulties with speech, he's very gentle with you, and his quiet charm eventually trumps your initial fear of him. His home is an old stone castle, situated on the highest point of a small isolated island. It's quite scenic, you see the waves from your window... but when the tide rises, the castle is entirely cut off from the mainland. On high tides and great swells there's no way to leave your new home. It is beautiful when the sun is shining, but equally, the small patch of land is often shrouded by a thick silencing fog... the sea around the island is deep and churning, and when clouds roll over, the cold water is black as ink. At night, the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks far below your window makes it difficult to sleep.
... Your husband is kind, clearly deeply smitten with you. He tries his best to make you happy on such an isolated isle. But each month, he often disappears to sea for several nights... you spend many dark evenings tucked against the window, hoping for his safe return.
You don't know where he goes. He tells you he goes 'out to sea'. He always comes back smelling of the long, dark kind of seaweed that wraps around sailors' legs and drowns them. He has no family- you never see him eat.
... He has only one rule. When the wind begins to pick up around the island, you must go inside, and remain safe within its thick stone walls until the storm is over. It's an easy rule to follow.
...
The truth, about your husband? He's a powerful kraken, deeply in love with you, who sacrifices his life in the ocean to take on a humanoid form and be with you. But once a month, he has no choice but to return to the sea in his true form, to feed.
He isn't frightened by the great storms- he is their cause. The reason he makes you stay inside is twofold. He doesn't want you to see his transformation...
... But also, his true form is massive, with a mind far wider and wilder than the consciousness he uses for his land form. He wants you safe behind those thick stone walls, where he can't reach...
... He doesn't trust himself around the most precious thing in his life.

L.M Montgomery single handled defining the friends-to-lovers trope, “Perhaps, after all, romance did not come into one’s life with pomp and blare, like a gay knight riding down; perhaps it crept to one’s side like an old friend through quiet ways; perhaps it revealed itself in seeking prose, until some sudden shady of illumination flung athwart its pages betrayed the rhythm and music; perhaps… perhaps.. love unfolded naturally out of a beautiful friendship, as a golden-hearted rose slipping from its green sheath” sets Anne and Gilbert apart from everyone else.

here's 300 words of boys bein cute! warnings for a trypanophobic character's pov, mentions of needles and vague references to piercings of the intimate kind. characters are from @batrogers' @thatbrokenpromise, somewhere early on in their established relationship. please reblog to show your support, and enjoy <3
~~~~
Chief was trying very hard to ignore Far and Hateno’s conversation. They had arrived at the topic of body modifications, and neither were shy about personal topics. Far was explaining in great detail how he had seen a variety of piercings in… unexpected places, and Hateno kept asking questions while Chief began to wish for an escape.
“Hey, Chief,” Hateno said, turning to him as he finally acknowledged his presence. “You know how to work with needles, right? Do you think you can do piercings?”
Had Chief been a different man, the idea of such an intimate activity with one of his closest companions would have made him blush for an entirely different reason.
As it was, he froze, unseeing, a ringing building in his ears.
He was able to cope well enough to give Hateno morphine, but a piercing-
All he could feel was horror.
Chief silently shook his head, and Hateno gave a good-natured sigh before returning his attention to Far.
Chief took deep, controlled breaths, unable to stop his spiraling thoughts. He tapped Hateno’s shoulder, intending to excuse himself in case he made himself sick. Hateno looked at Chief’s face first, not his hands, and his expression crumpled into concern.
“Chief? What’s wrong?” Hateno asked quietly.
Chief whined, glancing away from worried eyes.
“Oh… that really shook you up, huh?” Hateno reached for him, and Chief hesitated for only a moment before giving in.
“D-don’t… don’t ask me that again,” Chief breathed.
“I won’t, I won’t ever ask that of you. I’m sorry.”
Behind them, Far stood and signed “I’ll leave you be.”
Hateno held Chief tight despite his shivering, whispering assurances and apologies and pressing gentle kisses to his hair until Chief had all but forgotten why he had been so upset in the first place.
Of Oak and Sparrow
(Part 2 of The Girl Called Sparrow)
Sparrow returned to the fallen oak tree one final time.
To her, it was a skeleton. A creaking spine wrapped in an armor of bark that, in the end, wasn't strong enough to keep the true monsters at bay.
The sleeping hill was a graveyard beneath the weight of the tree that once crowned it.
Its branches reached toward the sky like bony fingers. The wind whispered through its foliage to pluck down the browning decay. Those same leaves crunched beneath the sole of her boot. She imagined her faerie's hair muting into an earthy brown to match it.
Sparrow traced the scars in the exposed wood. Each mark splitting the stump was an open wound. Its roots and its core were a bleeding heart, severed from the rest of its great height and graceful limbs.
In the tree rings, she saw his fingerprint. Her Kind Oak. The fae who'd held her heart in his hands and treated it with gentleness.
Her tears soaked into the wood's cracks and grooves, fingers tightening around the acorn that promised her a chance at a future.
The encroaching winter drained the life of the forest away. When Sparrow left her home, it felt as a hollow corpse.
She walked until her feet ached and her body swayed with exhaustion. She sank down against the cover of a mossy knoll, eyelids begging for rest. But it would be of poor manner not to acknowledge her hosts.
Sparrow picked three long strands of grass and weaved them into a ring, testing it on her own finger before sliding it off and tucking it into the knot of a tree.
She spoke aloud to any fae that might be near. Listening. Waiting. "I apologize for my intrusion. I am merely passing through, and am most grateful for your hospitality as I take a night's rest. I left you a gift in the hole of that tree. I hope you take no offense to my presence."
Shivering even beneath the thick wool of her cloak, she let her eyelids drop closed as the night swallowed her up.
Sparrow awoke to a pale sun and frost on her lashes. Her breath formed clouds in the morning chill. Scrubbing the sleep from her eyes, her hand slipped into her pocket, seeking the familiar comfort of her Oak's acorn.
Her heart lurched. She checked again. It wasn't there.
Straightening, she scrabbled through the crust of frost coating the ground around her, searching with a despair that made her dizzy. "No- Where--"
"Tell me, I am dreadfully curious, what is so valuable about this acorn?" spoke a voice like crushed velvet.
Sparrow jolted, swiveling around. Her breath caught.
Before her was a fae that glistened like a winter star. His eyes held the glint of cold steel. A knife's edge, harrowing and beautiful all at once. The gently falling snow avoided him in its path.
Pinched between his moon-pale fingers, was her acorn.
Sparrow's heart gave another awful tug.
She reached for it before she could stop herself. The acorn disappeared into the fae's fist as his lips lifted into a flash of pearly teeth. A little too sharp and a little too amused. Something about it reminded her of the maw of a hungry cat.
Sparrow swallowed. She dropped to her knees. "Forgive me. You startled me."
"Such a pretty gift," the faerie murmured. He lifted his other hand, the ring she'd offered up wrapped around his index finger. Surely he was mocking her. It looked terribly simple against the porcelain of his skin. "It is refreshing to meet a human who still knows the old ways. Are you going to answer my question or do I need to repeat myself?"
Sparrow's fingers twisted in her lap. Her blood ran cold. "I need that acorn to resurrect one who is dear to me."
The fae hummed, holding up the acorn again and glancing it over. "This is magik born of the fae wilds."
Her stare tracked his hand as if he were carelessly handling glass. "I have no knowledge of its origin. Only that the tree this acorn fell from was tethered to a fae who could not leave its shadow. The tree was cut down. I need to plant that acorn to give him renewed life."
The fae's smile was that of a predator toying with its prey because it found the creature's helplessness against it adorable. He crouched in front of her, nimbly balanced on the balls of his arched feet.
His head tilted. "Give me your name and I'll return your precious acorn to you."
"That, I cannot give you," Sparrow said softly. "My acorn is no use to me if I am too intoxicated by your sway to plant it."
"What difference does it make?" The fae's cadence was the crackling of a candle flame; the sparks that rain down from a shooting star. "Even if you plant the seed, years will pass before it grows tall enough to harbor your fae in its shadow; a great many years longer than if this were an ordinary acorn. Magik born of the faerie realm behaves as the fae wilds do. Time is of little consequence there. A moment is stretched for decades.
"Humans age in an instant. What will your dear one think of you when time creases your face and steals your youth? What will happen when you fall away to dust and your love is trapped alone in the confines of a shadow?"
It took the taste of metal in her mouth to realize she'd bitten down on her lip. Her insides swam.
Her mother's voice was clear in her head:
Do not make dealings with the fae.
Follow the rules of fae etiquette.
Do not owe anything to the fae. They will always collect.
But if he could magik a better way... If she could see her love again...
Sparrow forced the fear from her voice. Fae hated weakness, her mind screamed. "Will you make a deal with me?"
The faerie's wicked smile split further across his perfect face. "I was hoping you'd ask."
