People suggesting Catherina Grann is a fox based on "anime language dictates she's a fox" clearly forget we already have Fabienne, whose tail is much fluffier and ears more modest, plus her last name is literally Vulpes. One could maybe argue that Fabienne is an arctic fox, hence why she's fluffier and has smaller ears, but I think if Atlus was going for arctic fox, they wouldn't give her such pointed ears, since arctic fox ears are small and round.

No, I think Catherina is a maned wolf. Her clothing serves to highlight her long, lean legs, she's got big ole ears and a scraggly tail. Her cape can serve as a nod to the black along the maned wolf's mane, and she wears thigh highs and and arm sock on one of her arms to imitate how the maned wolf's legs are black.

In terms of the name, I can't associate "Grann" to basically anything but the word "grand" and maned wolves are Chrysocyon or "golden dogs", which is nothing, and are known in their homeland as aguara guasu or "large fox" which is also nothing to do with Grann. Plus everyone knows Catherina and her colour scheme is a huge nod to Catherine, Katherine, and Rin, plus my own name is a variation of Kathrine so I know full well that it just means purity and a variety of tulip anyway even if Catherine the video game doesn't exist.

You could probably talk me into bat eared fox too because of their bazonkers ears and similar black legs, or mayyyybe fennec fox, but I still don't think her tail suggests fox tail, and she seems real tall to be an Itty bitty fennec (fennec foxes are like 3lbs).

TL;DR I'm convinced Catherina Grann is a colour shifted maned wolf and it will take some work to convince me otherwise.

Am I the only one hoping that the sequel to Metaphor is Maria, Hirindo and Apus kicking ass?

Metaphor: ReFantazio has a cast of wonderful characters and in looking up the origins of some of their names I noticed that most of them are named of plants or animals. So I had a category 2 autism moment and compiled a list of them and where their names came from because I love details like this. Tell me if I missed any!

Haven't finished Maria's bond yet but something that's kind of funny is that my normal issue with localization in Atlus games has gone the opposite direction this time. Normally I get kind of annoyed whenever onee / onii is translated as big sis / big bro because not only is it unnatural in English, it also fails to capture the relationship well.

In ReFantazio, they translated it as "Mister", which, while technically also ok if you say that to an older young person in passing, Maria's bond very obviously implies that she sees you as an actual family member, a part of her family with her, Grius, and Fabienne. But in the translation, she still calls you "mister", which feels really, really anemic for the actual emotion she's attempting to express when she calls you onii-chan later in the bond.

That being said, Maria's follower bond itself is really well done. There's literally nothing special about it -- it's been played out dozens of times in plenty of games, but they managed to capture the right kind of pathos that makes me very attached and protective of her. She reminds me a bit of Maiko from Persona 3, except obviously the tone of the relationship is changed since Metaphor is a darker game.
