Brigitta: How Regret Destroys Us
Warning: The following post will contain heavy spoilers for Brigitta's follower link in Metaphor: ReFantazio.
In the United Kingdom of Euchronia, how the world works extends back to a single product within the universe, a singular spark that ends up affecting the lives of everyone we come into contact with. That is magic. Especially in the royal capital of Grand Trad, magic means everything. From being able to survive out in the wild, to protecting your country as part of the military through special devices known as 'igniters'. At the point in the game they are introducers, igniters are shown to be able to unleash the magical abilities of those who choose to wear them, ranging in effectiveness and strength the higher the position of power.
Brigitta Lycaon is a merchant introduced very early in the game, owning the largest igniter shop within Grand Trad. She appears very stand-off in nature and only chooses to speak and offer a request to the protagonist if his 'Wisdom' is high enough. Brigitta is an extremely smart and powerful woman... but as you come to know her, it's clear that a lot of her nature is seemingly a façade that she uses to protect herself and her business.
In the first few levels of her follower link, you are introduced to Brigitta's pet. A dog simply called... dog. Brigitta says herself that she doesn't give it a name in fear of becoming too attached to it, instead leaving it in the hands of the protagonist to take care of. it's clear that the bond between Brigitta and her dog is more than what it seems, especially when you reach the midst of her link and discover that the dog has seemingly gone missing. Brigitta herself is angry, fearful and out for revenge, to which you as the player must sit back and wonder if this woman cares more than she's letting on. Why though? Why does she put up a front to the protagonist even under such circumstances?
As the search comes up short, Brigitta's findings lead her to a village. An extremely small one that had forbid the sale of igniters due to their danger. She proclaims to the protagonist that she will 'burn it down' to get the dog back, yet in the end, she simply walks away without doing so. Brigitta's regret extends more to just losing a pet, she continues to lose things that she cares about and all that matters to the powers above her is that the sales of igniters continue. It's clear to the protagonist in later ranks that Brigitta is a cog in the machine of the Church, unable to break out and unable to rebel in fear of having more things that she cares about disappearing.
Shockingly, the village that Brigitta said she would burn down herself... does get burned down, and the blame is pinned solely on her by the Church in a capital-wide proclamation. When confronted on this issue, she doesn't feel sad, nor angry. She feels nothing. It's another excuse for the Church to keep their grasp on her. Yet, whilst she feels guilt and regret for even bringing up the idea, having her name attached to this scheme that was carried out without her knowledge, Brigitta realises that there is no way to repay such debts. There were no survivors, right?
In one of the final ranks, it's revealed that two children survived. They both have igniters and they both wish to kill Brigitta for what she seemingly did. It's here where the main message of Brigitta's follower link is highlighted. She doesn't falter, nor show any emotion. She explains to the children that they could very well kill her right now in the middle of the street, yet what would they do after that? Get caught and killed as a result of killing one of the royal capital's top merchants? Then, there's the kicker.
Brigitta explains her own cycle to the children. How revenge and regret lead to actions like these, often without thinking. There can be a simple spark that leads you down a dangerous path that you can never recover from. She ends up taking the two children in and taking care of them, finally linking back around to when she had her dog. This time, she's picking up the pieces and her regrets, aiming to shape a better future for those that to the world, she hurt.
In her final link, she explains that the protagonist helped keep her on that path, fully supporting him in his pursuit of the throne in the process when she only ever thought the bond between them was acquaintances as best. Brigitta never wanted to have friends, nor close companions, believing that they would only be taken away to increase the hold on her further.
Yet, in the final scene, she promises that the igniters she sells will be much less powerful, a limited variety that will stop a powerful-enough magic from being emitted that could end up taking someone's life, something that she's seen and visualised all too well.
In the end, Brigitta is a woman shaped by her regrets. As a merchant, she's been used to a 'clockwork' style of living that to her, no close relationships exist. It's you and it's the world. If you ever get too close, then the cruel world will pull you back into its clutches. Through meeting the protagonist, Brigitta now realises that the world can be changed and whilst your regrets may stay forever, the new memories you make can ultimately be a worthwhile replacement.
