Venting about computer problems

So my mom's computer has still been occasionally freezing. Currently, with the old CPU and old GPU, it seems to be working. But I've no reason to think they're incompatible and they don't seem to be bad, so what the deal? Firstly, I ran across the fact that there's a 'cpu compatibility list', and just because it's the right socket doesn't mean the processor will work. And lo, the FX-6300 is not on the list for the GA-M68MT-S2. But apparently when the cpu isn't compatible the system won't POST. But mine would POST, and it'd run for bit. So I keep looking and apparently manufacturers don't necessarily keep that list up to date. And incidentally, the FX chips that are compatible require the FB version of the bios (as opposed to the initial FA). And while it's not in the compatibility list, there's a newer FC version too! Maybe if I just update the bios it'll all work! No. Gigabyte does not offer the firmware in a form usable by the bios, it only offers the firmware as a Windows executable. So that's not gonna happen. And not only did we buy a processor that's essentially e-waste at this point, we bought two because I thought the first one was bad. Secondly, as far as I know there's no reason the GPU (RX 550 4GB) shouldn't work. My guess is that the motherboard can't supply enough power for it, which might be the same limitation with the CPU. But I dunno what the deal is and I have no idea where to start looking.

So yeah, I wasted at least $60 on account of ignorance, and about $100 for reasons I don't even know. Ah, and the new power supply was unnecessary since the other stuff didn't work, so about $200 total. Could've bought a refurb and a new SSD for that price. The cost of learning I guess? Feels like proof of my worthlessness, that I'm a drain on others at best.

But yeah, I guess the main lesson is that upgrading old machines is very sketchy, and you should think long and hard before doing anything more than adding more ram and replacing the storage drive.

Presentato fuori concorso all'81esima edizione del Festival di Venezia, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice è l'attesissimo sequel del classico del 1988 diretto da Tim Burton, che qui torna nuovamente dietro la macchina da presa. Con il ritorno di volti noti del primo capitolo, come Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder e Catherine O'Hara, e l'esordio di nuovi interpreti, come la giovane Jenna Ortega e i veterani Willem Defoe, Danny DeVito e Monica Bellucci, il film promette di riproporre le atmosfere cupe e grottesche che hanno caratterizzato le vicende di Beetlejuice trentasei anni fa e, a giudicare dalla buonissima accoglienza ricevuta a Venezia, possiamo aspettarci un film estremamente divertente.

Love Lies Bleeding (Cinema - 12 Settembre)

Uscito nelle sale americane lo scorso Marzo e acclamato in numerosi festival cinematografici, Love Lies Bleeding vede Kristen Stewart interpretare una giovane ragazza dal passato turbolento, che incontra un'aspirante body-builder, interpretata da Katy O'Brian, di cui si innamora follemente, dando inizio a una storia fatta di sesso, violenza e un ambientazione anni '80 davvero sfaccettata. Un film particolare e che andrebbe tenuto d'occhio.

His Three Daughters (Netflix - 20 Settembre)

Presentato al festival di Toronto dello scorso anno, rilasciato in alcune sale cinematografiche selezionate e ora in arrivo su Netflix, His Three Daughters è un film che promette di portare sullo schermo una storia fortemente drammatica, narrata da tre punti di vista diversi, rappresentati dalle bravissime Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen e Natasha Lyonne. Insomma, una pellicola che emozionerà parecchio.

Wolfs (Cinema selezionati - 20 Settembre, Apple TV+ - 27 Settembre)

A molti anni dalla loro ultima collaborazione, George Clooney e Brad Pitt uniscono di nuovo le forze in un action-comedy che si prospetta davvero interessante. Diretto da Jon Watts e presentato fuori concorso a Venezia, Wolfs vede due uomini diametralmente opposti lavorare assieme per portare a termine lo stesso incarico. Un film d'azione vecchia scuola non si rifiuta mai.

SERIE TV

Slow Horses 4 (Apple TV+ - 4 Settembre)

Partita come serie snobbata, Slow Horses si sta pian piano ritagliando un posto nel panorama televisivo attuale, anche grazie alle recenti nomination agli Emmy di quest'anno. La quarta stagione riprenderà dalla conclusione della precedente e vedrà Jackson Lamb e il suo team far fronte alla perdita di Catherine Standish e affrontare un problema riguardante un'altro membro, il quale sembra essere più grave del previsto. Se avete amato le precedenti stagioni, questa non potete perderla.

The Perfect Couple (Netflix - 5 Settembre)

Una cosa è certa: Nicole Kidman ama che si parli di lei. Fresca di vittoria a Venezia per la sua performance in Babygirl, la Kidman è nuovamente protagonista, stavolta in TV, per la miniserie The Perfect Couple. Una serie che narra di un imminente matrimonio e di un cadavere che rovina tutto, un evento che sicuramente porterà alla luce segreti e intrighi, di cui è impossibile fare a meno.

The Old Man 2 (FX - 12 Settembre 2024)

Dopo il buonissimo successo della prima stagione (disponibile in Italia su Disney+) e le riprese rimandate a causa del doppio sciopero, The Old Man torna con una seconda stagione che prevede più azione e adrenalina e riprenderà le vicende dei personaggi di Jeff Bridges e John Lithgow a seguito dell'intensissimo finale della scorsa stagione. Speriamo che arrivi presto anche in Italia.

Agatha All Along (Disney+ - 18 Settembre)

Il Marvel Cinematic Universe torna in TV con Agatha All Along, spin-off di WandaVision incentrato su Agatha Harkness, ancora una volta interpretata da Kathryn Hahn. In una serie di situazioni grottesche e che omaggiano il thriller di stampo investigativo, Agatha si ritroverà a unire le forze con un ragazzo misterioso per poter riacquistare ciò che ha perduto. Sarà il primo buon prodotto televisivo Marvel dopo tanto tempo? Noi speriamo di sì.

The Penguin (HBO - 19 Settembre [USA], Now - 20 Settembre [Italia])

The Batman di Matt Reeves ha riportato un barlume di speranza all'interno dell'universo cinematografico DC e un'espansione di tale universo narrativo, che, ricordiamo, non avrà a che vedere con quello di James Gunn, non può che far piacere. The Penguin rivedrà l'irriconoscibile e bravissimo Colin Farrell riprendere i panni di Oswald Cobblepot, il quale dovrà ricostituire il proprio prestigio a seguito degli eventi del film di Reeves e ci mostrerà il lato più criminale di Gotham City. Non possiamo che essere curiosi al riguardo.

From 3 (MGM+ - 22 Settembre [USA], Paramount+ - 4 Ottobre [Italia])

Una delle serie mystery più chiacchierate del momento sta per tornare, pronta a darci nuovi grattacapi e si spera anche delle risposte. Stiamo parlando di From, la serie con protagonista Harold Perrineau, che tornerà negli schermi statunitensi il 22 Settembre, mentre l'Italia dovrà attendere fino alla prima settimana di Ottobre per scoprire se Tabitha ha davvero lasciato la cittadina e per capire come gli altri protagonisti dovranno comportarsi a seguito delle varie sfide finora affrontate.
