Zaeed is another character whose popularity was spread out over a bunch of different ships. Despite being in the top 5, Garrus ultimately comes out as an underperformer, with about half of the requests for him going unfilled.

In contrast to the trilogy, Sloane is the only character whose popularity really comes from multiple ships. Harry had one story with MRyder instead of FRyder, while all of Kandros and Evfra’s stories come from being paired with FRyder. Kaetus also had a single source (Sloane/Kaetus).

The underperformers

Garrus, Tali, Joker, Liam, Vetra, and Avitus Rix all had among the highest offers and requests for the Trilogy and Andromeda (respectively) but had serious underperformance when it came to stories written.

Characters with at least one offer/request and no fic were: Benezia, Legion, EDI, Kelly, Grunt, and Morinth.

Liam/Jaal was the highest requested ship (4 requests) that got no fic. Ships that had 3 requests and zero fic: Turian Vortex Poet/Girl He Left Behind and Female Ryder/Liam/Jaal.

Macen/Avitus had 7 requests and 7 offers but only one fic.

Pain searing and pulling and all together overwhelming dragged Evfra forcibly to the surface. He woke with a roar, batting away the hands touching him. 

“Evfra, Evfra,” someone spoke. “You’re safe now. You have to let us treat you.”

Treat?

He blinked rapidly to clear the tears from his eyes. White filled them instead. White ceiling, white tiles, solid white barriers that sealed him off from the outside and white uniforms on everyone around him. 

Rescued?

Clearly, this wasn’t the escape pod. But all thoughts fled when hands shifted him onto a hard bed. High pitched beeps and shrill screeching came from the machines that surrounded him. Pain filled him and he cried out. 

“Get his leathers off now!” the doctor barked. 

More hands, more lightning jolts running across his body. But through the fog, one thought rose to the top. 

“Ryder… Where is she?” he gritted out through clenched teeth.

“Alive,” she rasped as she took in her surroundings through blurry vision.

This wasn’t what she had expected. At the end there, she remembered Evfra’s arms around her, her life blood pouring from her shoulder, a bullet had ripped through armour and flesh. The roof was falling in and darkness descended. She did not expect to wake. 

But here she was.

Evfra grunted, he figured as much. A flash of Ryder’s cocky’s smile flickered at the back of his mind and his brow tightened. He knew things went horribly wrong when Ryder’s vitals spiked. The dread grew and grew even as the situation at Old Pelavv got under control. The three hour deadline came and went without a crackle of static from his ushataliin. The display that was supposed to show him Ryder’s vitals remained dark red with the word “vitals offline” plastered across it. The last time Ryder was late, she almost died.

NaNoWriMo Day 26 / Too Many Sentences / No Longer Sunday

“Hey,” Ryder said, her voice heavy and husky in the best way possible. She rolled over onto her belly, propping herself up on her elbow as she smiled. 

Evfra reached out and brushed against her blonde hair. It had grown out enough that it had covered her old scars and then some. “You’re beautiful you know that?”

She chuckled. Her skin gleamed in the moonlit room. Freckles danced across her naked skin as she curled towards him. “I wasn’t fishing for a compliment you know.”

He snorted. She enjoyed his declarations if the broadening smile was any indication. A smile of his own curved his lips, an expression such ask this seldom graced his face. After all the leader of the Resistance couldn’t smile the kett to death. These were reserved for quiet moments with Ryder. He could admit it now, this remarkable woman from a planet 600 years away had a hold on his heart. And he didn’t feel trap or burdened. What had started as an alliance, a mutual desire to explore what the other could offer turned into something he never had expected. A safe harbour, a confidant, a partner. 

“What’s that look on your face?” Ryder asked, an eyebrow arching. She looked at him like she had discovered some delicious morsel of food. “Were you thinking good thoughts about me?”

He laughed, short and sharp but genuine all the same. “You’d know, wouldn’t you?” he mock growled as he surged towards her, flipping her onto her back as he loomed over her, hands pressing into the soft mattress on either side of her head. 

“I knew it!” She reached up and dragged him down for a kiss. Soft and tentative at first, so at odds with her personality but utterly designed to drive him wild. Pecks more than kisses, concentrating at the corners of his mouth. He growled, trying to capture her mouth with his own. But a stray hand traced a path over his cowl, scratching at it. Just like that his attention turned downwards. Down, down, down. Heat pooled in his loins and he groaned. “You’ll be the death of me, Ryder.”

She smiled against his lips, amusement dancing in her eyes. “In the best possible ways,” she purred.

Excerpt from Irreplaceable

Stepping in front of the fogged mirror, she took a deep breath, steeling herself. When Ryder was washing her hair, she could guess the state of her hair. But still she had to see it for herself. Her good hand thumped against the fogged up mirror and she dragged her hand from left to right. The first wipe, revealed her face. Steam continuously tried to obscure her reflection. She wiped a second time, this time clearing a good portion of the mirror.

Slowly Ryder twisted her neck. First the right side, it was fine. Short blonde hair as she had always seen it, a little darker because it was wet, her longer fringe slicked upwards. Now the left. A significant part of her already short hair was shaved off. There was a long ugly curved line, shaped like a C, traced the dome of her head.

The haunted look in her eyes, the battle scars she had earned were marks of failure in her eyes. Beaten, bruised but not broken just bent. @seokanori captured her emotions so truly here. It takes my breath away.

She alternated between hot and cold when the nurse arrived to take her vitals in the morning. Her eyes were sandy and painful. Another night of no sleep, hours of twisting and turning Evfra’s words over and over in her head, feeling more miserable as the hours stretched. 

Coward, why didn’t you stop pretending and just talk? Fucking coward.

“Ryder, you’re running a fever,” Lexi said, “We’ll need to do some test to make sure you’re not getting an infection.”

She groaned as she tried to turn away from her doctor. Her body ached and she was cold but Lexi insisted that she not use any blankets. For some reason, she felt like she needed to cry over the simple restriction. The door hissed open. Ryder turned, hoping it was Jaal. At least he will be more sympathetic to my woes.

There stood another angara. Her heart stuttered at the sight of him. It never did that before. 

“Evfra,” she called. 

He was instantly at her side. “What happened?”

This question he directed to Lexi. “Fever, possible infection. I am trying to get a blood sample once I examine of her wound.”

Without asking, Evfra pressed a palm on her forehead. The contact of bio-electricity on feverish skin was uncomfortable. She groaned and twisted away. Evfra nodded. “Yes she is much warmer. I didn’t notice it when I visited last night.”

Ryder didn’t expect him to be so forthright about his visit. “I’m fucking here people,” she growled as a shiver ran through her. “And I am cold.”

Evfra looked at her. His gaze unreadable and opaque. His fingers quickly unclipped his rofjinn and spread it over her. She took it greedily savouring his residual heat, fighting the urge to bury his face in it and just breath his scent in.

A bored Pathfinder was probably the worst thing that ever happened to Aya. With most of the Tempest crew recalled back to the Nexus, Jaal was the only one left behind with her. He was able to seek better treatment from Aya’s doctors. The rest had to give a report of what happened in person and deliver the injured APEX members back home, Ryder was stranded. If she was stranded on Aya itself, it wasn’t that much of a problem. But she was confined, imprisoned to a single room, to a single piece of furniture in said room. To say her temper was fraying was putting it mildly.

Determined to relieve it any way she could , a bored Pathfinder planned, she plotted.

Step one: Pilfer a datapad.

She refused to sit and literally stare at the ceiling all day. Without an omni-tool and without SAM to chat with, she couldn’t keep herself entertained. Even Jaal’s daily visits weren't helping. Lexi’s daily visits were tumultuous at best. Daily cognitive and memory tests were a kind of torture on their own. And Lexi remained evasive with her questions.

Ryder remembered only bits and pieces of that day. Nothing stood out as special but that fragmented memory of a special dinner was different. It felt important, it felt urgent. She just knew there was something she had to do, something she had to say.

Ryder looked at the mirror. The scar on her head was mostly covered by hair now. She brushed her fingers across it, feeling the raised skin. The four lines across her face had faded some, looking a little less red, a little less angry.

She sighed and nodded to her reflection. Her eyes checking her fringe one more time. Her fingers teasing it higher, straighter before washing her hands clean of hair product. She tossed it into her bag.

“Ready?” Evfra asked.

“Give me a second,” she said as she popped a couple of pills into her mouth and washed it down with a gulp of water.

Ryder secured her medication in her bag. Lexi had prescribed them. Though it took a while to find the right combination, she didn’t have to weather it alone. Evfra made sure he was there every step of the way. His presence made everything bearable.
