THE SUNDAY TIMES: Molly Hudson, Saturday November 30 2024, 6.00pm GMT
Listening to George Russell field questions about the controversial issues that threaten the future of the sport with clarity and calmness, you would be hard pushed to detect that he was once an unsure and self-conscious child.
Russell as a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association is now one of Formula 1’s leading public voices. But such were his difficulties, he was sent for speech therapy and that focus on clear enunciation has been crucial in helping him progress in a sport that requires concise feedback.
“When I was a young kid, six or seven, my dad used to say he could never understand what I was saying, because I was mumbling all the time,” Russell says as he sits in his team kit in the Mercedes hospitality suite. “As I grew a little bit older, and I started to race in Europe, for three years I had an Italian mechanic. I was in an Italian team. It was a European environment, and you had to talk slow, you had to talk precisely so they could understand.”
“When I was with Force India [now Aston Martin], as a test driver, we did some work with an ex-RAF pilot, just about clear communications and interpretations of people’s words and that really resonated with me.”
The 26-year-old secured his third Formula 1 victory last week in Las Vegas, and that communication came to the fore. He recognised that the track evolution, which meant that lap times were improving as the track was swept clean of dirt by the cars and rubber was laid on the circuit, meant the last car on track would have the best chance of success.
“Vegas was a good example — in qualifying, I was so clear. ‘I want to be the very last car to cross the line.’ It was pretty clear what my requests were. We did that, and we got the pole. I believe in myself this year, especially whenever I’ve trusted my gut,” he says.
Russell was born in King’s Lynn, and attended the private Wisbech Grammar School, before his karting took precedence. He spent his first Formula 1 pay cheque on a new Mercedes for his father, Steve, who ran a business selling seeds and pulses and travelled with his son to races in a motorhome while he was karting.
That family dedication has paid off. Russell is preparing to begin a pivotal new chapter of his career, stepping out of the shadow of seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton and becoming Mercedes’s lead driver next season, alongside a rookie teenager, the Italian Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
It has been a season of ups and downs for Mercedes, struggling to find a consistent car despite registering four race victories, and managing the departure of Hamilton to Ferrari at the end of the season. Russell has transformed from someone who watched Hamilton race, to being his colleague, and he leads him in the drivers’ championship.
“I definitely looked up to him and admired him,” Russell says. “My hero, honestly, was my brother [Benjy, who also raced under the driver No63 he uses]. “He’s ten years older than me, and he’s who I looked up to when I was go-karting, because that was maybe more relatable for me. He was winning races in go-karts, and he was winning British championships, World Championships, and that’s what I wanted to do, because I could visually see him doing that.
“But without doubt, I’ll always remember my first F1 race for Mercedes [shortly before signing to their young driver development programme] in Abu Dhabi 2016, the Nico [Rosberg] and Lewis race, and just being in the same room as him in the debrief, listening to it all unfold. I was starstruck being there in that moment. So for sure it is surreal that we’ve now been team-mates for three years, and that I know within myself that I can perform at a minimum of his level.”
Russell has raced in 126 grands prix, with three victories, four pole positions and 15 podium finishes, having spent three seasons at a struggling Williams, before stepping up to Mercedes in 2022. His highest finish in the drivers’ championship was fourth, in 2022. This season is his most successful statistically speaking, but he is further down the rankings in sixth because of the spread of drivers claiming wins.
For so long, Hamilton carried the hopes of British fans in F1, and this season Lando Norris has provided the best chance of success. Russell believes next year can be his opportunity, assuming he has the car to do so.
“I’ve been in F1 six years now, next year is my seventh, and my fourth year with the team,” he says. “I feel absolutely ready to take my journey to the next level and I feel ready to fight for a championship. I feel ready to fight against Max [Verstappen] and if we get the opportunity, I’m not going to waste it.
“I feel I’ve been ready for three years. I’m team-mates with the greatest driver of all time and if you’re ever finishing ahead of Lewis Hamilton or beating him in a championship, you know that probably in 12 other seasons that would have been enough to win, or at least fight for a world championship.”
Russell has learnt to celebrate the good times with gusto when they do arrive, cancelling his flight home to party, instead, in Vegas with his girlfriend, Carmen Montero Mundt, and his team members.
The Vegas grand prix is particularly brutal on the body, as it involves travelling to the other side of the world, and then it is held at night. Before claiming his pole position, Russell took a 45-minute nap in his driver’s room.
Those challenges meant extra celebration, and something Russell had been inspired to do by a fellow driver.
“I listened to Fernando [Alonso] when he was on the Jake Humphrey podcast saying he looks back on his victories and regrets not celebrating it more [but] I’ve got to be honest, when I was out in Vegas until the early hours there’s a point of which I thought to myself, ‘You know what, I need to head back now, because I want to experience this feeling again.’ ”
Russell knows that the ability to challenge for titles is dependent on the capability of his car as much as it is a marker of his own talent. His time at Mercedes has coincided with the dominance of Red Bull and Verstappen.
“Arguably, Max shouldn’t have won the championship this year,” he says. “But the others made a few more errors and didn’t capitalise when they had the chance. I feel that we have [won what we could].
“Opportunities don’t come around every single day. This year was Lando’s chance. They [McLaren] might be there again next year. They may not. We just don’t know in this sport; nobody would have predicted Red Bull to fall off form in the manner that they have.
“There’s so much hype around Max. He’s such an exceptional driver, but the fact is, he’s won one race in the last 12 and, it just goes to show everyone is beatable because you are at the mercy of your race car. The difference with him this year is he’s won every occasion that he’s had the chance, and his rivals haven’t.”
Russell will hope that next year he has the chance to show he can capitalise where others have not.

“Is there any situation you would drive for me?” You asked randomly as you drove to the track with Chris in the passenger seat, like always. He decided to join you for the U.S. Grand Prix since he’s only seen you drive through a screen or on a normal street where you’re not driving almost 300 miles per hour. You were always the designated driver, even if you were tired after driving to the limit for 2 hours straight. He was simply made to be a passenger princess.
“I don’t know how,” He replied, setting his phone to the side after queuing up a few songs. “Trust me, I’d love to say I get to drive around my Formula 1 driver significant other. I just don’t wanna risk it if I crash.”
“I am much more likely to crash during a race than you are on the street,” You laughed as you pulled up to a stoplight and looked over at him. You moved your hand from the gearshift over to his thigh. “It’s much more dangerous when it’s just me behind the wheel. What if I taught you how to drive?”
“I don’t ever wanna drive what you do,” Chris said immediately, shaking his head violently.
“Not a Formula 1 car, dumbass,” You chuckled back as the light changed and you moved your hand back to the gear shift. “Just a normal car. Maybe an automatic since it’ll be easiest for you to learn on.”
“Do you even have an automatic car?”
“No, but Matt does,” You laughed in response, “Why would I, as a racing driver, have an automatic car?”
“Fuck if I know!” He shouted, “Convenience?”
“No,” You replied quietly, briefly looking over at him as you pulled into the car park. You pulled into your designated spot before reaching into the center console and grabbing out your ID and Chris’s paddock pass. You gestured for him to lean forward so that you could put the lanyard around his neck. “Keep this on you at all times. Security at COTA is known to always be checking for it, so make sure it’s always visible. Got it?”
“I got it,” Chris nodded in confirmation before getting out and going through the gates with you. You showed him around the paddock and the garage. It wasn’t that busy since it was just a media day, so there weren’t many fans. You took him on your track walk and pointed random things out for him. Then, when you made it back to the garage, your manager pulled you two aside and put a sticker on Chirs’s pass. “What’s this?”
“It’s for your hot lap,” You said simply as you changed into your team kit, “You didn’t think I would bring you on track and not take you on a hot lap.”

New podcast on Fast and the Curious! Lando It sounds like it really was just the one day in Perth! Lando said he made eggs for everyone the morning after they arrived and was left to do the washing up! The "illegal stuff" he mentioned in the F1 interview was riding motorbikes without proper protective kit 😂 He mentioned how he and Oscar have chats every race weekend about what they expect and their own debriefs afterward. (I'm sure most teammates do this but Andrea said that he likes how much they work together so it must be pretty special!) Him being hard on himself is about having high standards for himself which he feels is what's made him who he is today. He likes staying out of the chaos of contracts and changing teams. Said again how comfort for him is important because honesty and trust is better at a team where he knows people. They talked about how much people adore Lando and he said how much he appreciates it and still isn't used to it. He thinks he has the best fanbase. 😊 They said he seems genuinely happy and he really did! Oscar He'd had a flapjack that morning! They said how Oscar was the first "thing" they'd ever recorded and he clarified that he's human - so cute 😊 And he is their most frequent guest! Said he felt more settled and comfortable as opposed to the second half of 2023 hitting him "like a train" with how busy it was. Feels better now he knows what to expect. He pretended to get upset when they said they wanted to see Lewis win 2024 WDC 😂😂 Fred Vesti had told them that Oscar decided to stay away from the Alpine twitter drama (35:20) by playing chess with him since they lived next door at the time! His wisdom teeth gave him problems through the season and he should have had them out twelve months before. Oscar does not call his car a "she"! The only reason he called a car "Silvia" because his mechanics wouldn't let him leave until he named it 😂 He said that he and Lando will always work hard to help the team to get the most out of the car ❤️ While it's nice to have compliments he knows neither compliments or criticism will make him drive better so he just needs to stay focused.
Fewer teeth = weight saving 😂 That's it! Very cute and they both sounded super happy despite the weather!
anon you are an absolute blessing bc I had no idea when I'd be able to listen to that all the way through !! Lando being the one to make eggs for Daniel and Martin AND then doing the washing up is not what I'd ever have expected aksgfsagflajfs but Oscar talking about flapjacks and chess and wisdom teeth absolutely is goddd I adore them so much ??
thank you for writing this up <3<3
#submission#landoscar#mctwinks#twinklaren#not putting in their indiv tags bc ppl get real mad lol#landoscar podcast#the fast and the curious#testing 2024#they're literally opposites attract

24 for 2024
As 2024 comes to an end and I see all these posts from mutuals summing up their triumphs and challenges of their year, it started making me think about what these last twelve months have been like for me. And like all of y'all, 2024 definitely had impacts of positives and negatives! So here are 24 things that came to mind:
I decided to go back to school for a new career opportunity. Starting January 6th, I'll be taking my first classes for court reporting/voice writing 😊 I'm both nervous and looking forward to this new adventure!
I saw several fun and great movies this year--Deadpool and Wolverine, Wicked, Gladiator 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to name a few.
I also watched a ton of great documentaries that I've meaning to check out over the past few years--Icarus, Free Solo, My Octopus Teacher, too many to count--and I'm super excited to check out more next free chance I get!
My favorite F1 driver Lando Norris not only finished first place for his first time in a race this season, but he went on to finish 2nd overall in the rankings and my heart couldn't be prouder for him 🧡
On the same F1 note, my team McLaren won the Constructors Championship for the first time since 1998 😱
There were several massive moments of family drama through the year, each more shocking than the last if you can believe it, but I like to think we'll all hopefully enter 2025 on a closer note and manage to overcome the struggles bit by bit.
Had some health scares throughout the year for my family. Scary heart issues, scary lung issues, scary hospital visits...but we got through it all and we're going to try to make 2025 our healthiest year yet!
The death of Liam Payne tore a massive hole in my heart. One Direction kept me from suicide during my high school years and each of those boys will always mean the world to me 💗
I met several of my favorite celebrities this year at cons--David Tennant, Lenore Zann, Patrick Warburton, Alan Tudyk, Catherine Tate, Adam Savage, Tem Morrison, Neil Newbon, and Giancarlo Esposito--and also got another photo with Tyler Hoechlin looking just as gorgeous as the last time I saw him!
Tried out new cosplay this year--Ahsoka's white outfit from her series, Rogue from X-Men, and a cute Peter Pan outfit as well. Actually felt a little more confident than my previous 0% 😁
A year of firsts! I finished my first ever Lego kit this year of a F1 McLaren car. I finished my first ever escape room for my sister's birthday. And I also finished first place in a scavenger hunt and won a pumpkin carved like the Mandalorian.
Found out I'm allergic to gluten, so I've been sticking to a gluten-free diet nowadays and 2025 will be an entirely gluten-free year.
Seeing the eclipse this year was amazing!
I had an emotional breakdown this year over my writing, came very very very close to deleting everything, but slowly dug my way out of the pit one word at a time. My relationship with writing is still a fragile thing, but a sentence a day is still progress and I'm trying my best. That's what matters most :)
More on writing cuz why not. Wrote a total of 43k words (a whole lot less than last year, but oh well) but even more surprising, my Marcus Acacius fic received more kudos than anything I've written since 2022 omggggg y'all thank you for the support!!
Introduced my mom to MySims and Pokémon on the switch. Slowly but surely creating a video game addict lol
Stayed up literally 48 hours with my sister playing the original Zoo Tycoon on my laptop and creating the most perfect zoo in existence. Exhaustion hit hard afterwards, but at least the guests were happy!
So much gorgeous and wonderful Pedro content--from award ceremonies to new movies + casting announcements to photoshoots and dancing sessions. The fandom just kept winning every month!
Made a web weaving for the anniversary of my fic Infinity Cube. I don't often feel proud about a lot of my attempts of creating stuff, but this little thing I actually think turned out pretty cool 😊
Bought so much Lady and the Tramp stuff oh my gosh--backpacks, a wallet, a giant stuffed animal, a Christmas ornament, little ceramic figurines hidden at the bottom of an antique store bin. I love it all ✨
Hit 5,000 followers on here. Like, what 😮 that's insane! I'm a shy porcupine who barely knows any social skills!! Thank you everyone who puts up with my sporadic posts and ramblings, it's appreciated more than I can ever say!
Everyone who liked, reblogged, kudos, and/or commented on my fics or video edits---thank you thank you thank you x a million!
Everyone who patiently waits for and supports my sporadic updates of the Pedro Library---thank you also x a million!
And finally, if you've made it all the way down here, I hope 2025 is full of kind moments for each and every one of y'all. I hope there's days full of adventures and joy and trying new things and meeting new people and petting animals and eating delicious food and making the world a little bit more of a sweeter place overall 💙

My Italian GP 2024 list of people who should step on Lego:
1. Whoever designed the Ferrari race suits and team kit for the weekend, cause politely WTF is that?
2. Whoever designed to trophies, cause why do they look like a claw clip?
3. Once again James Vowels for thinking that driver change is a good idea! “We invest in our young drivers” until they’re not Max 2.0 and dragging your shit box of a car to 1st place.
4. Whoever spelt Franco’s last name wrong on the sign- like come on bro
5. Mercedes for putting Kimi into an F1 session on a race weekend before he’s fully ready- give the kid a chance to grow as a driver before you put him in a top 8 seat.
6. James Vowels AGAIN for talking about Mick, that was so uncalled for!
7. Redbull cause WTF was this weekend about?!
8. McLaren for not figuring out their fucking strategy! They could have taken the constructors today! Also do they not want their driver to win the championship? Sort it out or I’m gonna come down there and do it for you.
9.Martin Brundle for saying that Oscar doesn’t care about Lando’s championship battle- bit harsh but whatever
10. Everyone crying once again over Lando having emotions- you all need to grow up

Mick Schumacher On Fashion, Le Mans and Fronting Tommy Hilfiger's New Campaign
It's a big year for sports, as the Paris Olympics near, tennis champs prep for Wimbledon, and the Euros inch closer. In the midst of it all Tommy Hilfiger is getting in on the action with the release of an International Games collection. Refashioning timeless icons for the new generation, the collection is a modern interpretation of the brand's 1996 capsule collection released to celebrate the Olympics arriving in Atlanta, reworking track-ready styles including archival varsity jackets, rugby jerseys and basketball vests in Tommy's signature red, white and blue. Speaking on the new collection, Hilfiger says: "The sporting calendar sets the cultural pulse for the year, and 2024's shaping up to be amazing. We're building on our legacy of working with pioneers in sport and reimagining timeless American icons through an archival lens." To front the campaign, the US house has turned to the global sporting stage to curate a team of athletes who embody the brand's spirit, including All-Pro NFL wide receiver Stefon Diggs, college basketball guard Deja Kelly, star of the all-Japan skateboarding association Aori Nishimura, and Formula 1 driver and current member of Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, Mick Schumacher. Ahead of the collection drop, in the conversation below we speak to Schumacher about his first memories of Tommy Hilfiger, his personal style, and prepping for Le Mans.
Ella Joyce: "What was it like working with Tommy Hilfiger? Do you have personal memories of the brand?" Mick: "It was great! Not only is it exciting to wear Tommy and to have attended the NYFW show with all the exceptional details, but to be a part of the campaign and the bigger brand story is just incredible. A personal memory for me is when the brand worked with Ferrari back in the day, before their current partnership with the Mercedes-AMG F1 Team. My dad used to bring back so much kit and, honestly, I was just running around as the best-dressed kid in school!" EJ: "How does the campaign resonate with you?" Mick: "I really believe Tommy was able to create something that brings both sport and style to the table. I'm sporty, I love to do my workouts and be active outdoors, and to be able to do that fashionably is so important. I was so happy to be part of this campaign with other athletes, too. It was amazing to get to know them better and see how their sport and personalities impact their individual styles." EJ: "Off the track, how would you describe your personal style?" Mick: "I think the best word would be 'changeable.' I love to experiment and try new things with my style. I think you can see this across my social media, but I would probably look different if you saw me on the street two days in a row. From a classic look to a more casual or baggy streetwear look, I love the creativity that comes with personal style. It's so fun."
EJ: "You're currently competing in the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship. How's it going? What's coming up next for you?" Mick: "Yes, we just had our first race in Qatar, a ten-hour race! It was the first time I had to be on for that amount of time while learning and experiencing that type of race, but it was an interesting run. We learned a lot as a team. One of the cars even scored points, so it proves that we're on pace and the project is moving in the right direction, especially as everyone is gearing up for Le Mans." EJ: "Do you have any pre-race rituals?" Mick: "I don't, actually. It depends on how I'm feeling in the moment. If I'm nervous or stressed, or whatever it is, I'll always try to adapt to what's happening. Maybe one day I'm nervous so I have to work on calming down, and another day I'm too calm so I have to pump myself up. It all depends on the day."
EJ: "You're photographed alongside a host of other athletes for the campaign. How do you think your generation of athletes compares to generations which have come before?" Mick: "I think we are really different to athletes from the previous generation. Of course, social media and phones have made an impact, but it's also because we're so precise about what we're doing. We have strict training and a solid laid-out plan in front of us on how to achieve our desired results. We have so much research and information which leads our way, while back in the day it was more experimental." EJ: "America and collegiate heritage heavily inspire Tommy Hilfiger. Is there a specific place which inspires you?" Mick: "The racetrack. I've always been a part of it, from doing laps in a car to just being on the track. In terms of style, I've always been interested in fashion, most likely inspired by my dad at a young age; however, my girlfriend is heavily involved in the fashion world, so it's helpful when I need to know what looks good and what doesn't. Inspiration is all around, so it depends on where I look!"

Red Bull to launch their 2023 season in New York as double title defence beckons
F1 world champions Red Bull have announced that they will hold a ‘season launch’ in New York early in February, as the team look to continue their recent run of success. After winning the 2021 drivers’ championship with Max Verstappen, 2022 saw the Dutchman (15 wins from 22 races) and the outfit (17 wins) romp to both world titles, making the most of F1’s rules reset. READ MORE: ‘Can he improve? Yes, of course he can’ – Red Bull tip Verstappen to get even better in 2023 As such, they enter the 2023 campaign as the force to beat, with Ferrari aiming to offer a more sustained challenge this time out, and Mercedes bid to join them in the fight. On Friday, Red Bull took to social media with the message ‘New kit, new car, New York’, confirming a ‘season launch’ in the Big Apple on February 3. Running power units developed under their own in-house Red Bull Powertrains operation, the team will field an unchanged driver line-up this year, with Verstappen committed through 2028 and team mate Sergio Perez signed up until the end of 2024, while Christian Horner continues as Team Principal. Recently reflecting on Red Bull’s return to double title-winning ways, and bagging a fifth constructors’ crown, Horner said: “We went through that pain [of losing]. [In] 2013, we finished a very dominant streak and [2014], with the change in the regs, we were nowhere, and we never lost belief. READ MORE: ‘I’m pretty much at my best’ – Perez setting his sights on title challenge in 2023 “People’s heads dropped but you have to keep focused on a target. Many of the people that we have today are still with us from those times, from 2013. “There are many new people that have joined the team as well, and everybody has just kept focus on that challenge, on that goal of getting back into a winning position. Red Bull will be targeting back-to-back double titles for the first time in 10 years in 2023 “To get that constructors’ title back after eight very long years is testimony to all our hard work and dedication and belief that has gone in.” There will be one new addition for the upcoming season, as former driver Daniel Ricciardo returns in a third driver role to provide simulator and marketing support alongside Verstappen and Perez. 2023 F1 CAR LAUNCHES: When will the teams be showing off their new machines for 2023? Red Bull will, however, face wind tunnel testing and CFD restrictions through the year, following penalties handed out by the FIA for their breach of the 2021 cost cap limit. via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

Formula 1 Commission announce wet weather Sprint and safety changes after final meeting of 2022
The fourth and final meeting of the Formula 1 Commission convened on Friday ahead of the season finale in Abu Dhabi, with a review of regulatory procedures, wet weather racing, and technical and financial regulations part of the topics under discussion. Wet weather visibility has been a topic of discussion among the drivers recently, with the FIA beginning a study to define a “standard bodywork kit” over the wheels to supress tyre spray from cars, plus an investigation into the significance of surface water on the underfloor. The FIA said they would also ensure that pit stop tyre changes would not be hampered by the new bodywork, and that the bodywork wouldn't be fitted during green flag conditions. Further updates may be announced in 2023, they said, having presented the initial concept to the Commission. READ MORE: Formula 1 announces F1 Academy, a new all-female driver series for 2023 Roll hoop regulations have been approved for 2024 The Commission was informed that the FIA were undertaking a “comprehensive review” of the Sporting Regulations for 2024, with Formula 1 and the teams to be consulted throughout, and with any changes to be approved by the end of April 2023. The FIA also planned to carry out a “general review” of its judicial process for 2024.
