AMSTERDAM IS DEAD
"A Parkour Film aiming to revive this city’s lost street parkour scene. A production by fé amsterdam."
I came across this movie and it completely blew me away. It reminded me of old school skate videos Conor used to show me when we were stoners in high school.
Amsterdam is Dead has beautiful cinematography - the scenes are calm and artfully composed. They add a good touch of humour, matching the casual nature of parkour. They have very well coordinated sound design and soundtrack choices.
The "Magician" scene is especially creative and impactful; the movements match the sounds of the experimental jazz, and the outfits match the colors of objects in the city background, switching from one scene to another.
I love how the film expresses the whole culture around parkour - exploring the streets, having the courage to move in risky but creative ways, meeting random people (from homeless street dwellers to old ladies complimenting their somersaults), a fun approach, silliness, but most of all embracing the mentality of freedom of movement. Really inspirational.

Seder Berakhot (Various blessings, liturgical texts, and halakhic texts), edited by Benjamin Senior Godines, translated by Rabbi Isaac Aboab, Amsterdam: Albertus Magnus, 1687
This is a liturgical and halakhic handbook for use throughout the year. It includes blessings and prayers (in Hebrew with Spanish translation) recited at home and in the synagogue, during the week and on Sabbaths and festivals, over food and over various rituals, as well as at lifecycle events (weddings, circumcisions, celebrations of a daughter’s birth, when visiting the sick, etc.). It even includes a full Passover Haggadah. Halakhic treatises in Hebrew and/or Portuguese discuss the laws of ritual slaughter, inspection of an animal’s organs, dough and ritual bath preparation, and the Jewish calendar. At the rear are several calendaric tables, as well as a chronology of important events in world/Jewish history from the Deluge through the 1648-1649 Chmielnicki Massacres.
The book’s editor, Benjamin Senior Godines, writes in the introduction that he found the manuscript on which the edition was based in the collection of the wealthy merchant Rabbi Isaac de Mattathias Aboab (1631-1707), who also served as the translator into Spanish. Some of the more unique texts included herein are a blessing recited when purchasing a slave, a prayer for those killed in autos-da-fé, and descriptions of ascetic practices (e.g., flogging) for the eve of Yom Kippur. A parallel Hebrew-only edition of the book was issued around the same time by the same publisher.

Sense8 #203 “Obligate Mutualisms”
Lito searches for a new apartment with Hernando & Dani, Wolfgang encounters a woman from another cluster, Sun is forced to take drastic action in the prison, and Will arranges a meeting with the BPO executive.
Nomi, Amanita, and Bug continue their hacking on Bug’s houseboat at 50 Liberty Dock near San Francisco.
After (temporarily) freeing Will of Whispers, the cluster walks outside of BG 14 of the University of Amsterdam to enjoy the sunset.
Sun is taken from her cell at the prison set outside Iksan by suspicious guards.
When Sun is tazed, Kala feels the jolt herself in her lab at One Indiabulls Centre and collapses to the ground.
The the Porsche Centre Santa Fé, Lito goes in for a meeting with his agent and learns that his next project has dropped his contract.
Wolfgang and Felix visit the home of Sebastian Fuchs at Monbijouplatz 12 where Wolfgang meets a new sensate, Lila.
Capheus talks to a water seller outside his Kibera home and learns about the increasing prices.
Lito & Hernando find the perfect apartment at Siqueiros Dream (which you can stay in) which they decide they can afford if Dani moves in with them.
Min-Jung leads Sun to the Shinlim Gungyoung apartments where they take shelter with her old cellmate.
Will heads to the Den Haag Centraal Railway Station in The Hague where he can visit Jonas without giving away any important details.
During their conversation Jonas tells Will about seeing the father of his cluster in the train station that used to occupy that space. This building is Beurs van Berlage, the former commodities exchange in Amsterdam which is now used as a culture & events space.
Will goes to the famous Rijksmuseum to meet with Richard Wilson Chroome where he learns about the inner workings of BPO before Whispers shows up and gets a bit murdery.
I still need to identify the church hideout, the first apartment Lito and friends look at, Raoul's house, the street where Capheus is driving, the exterior of the prison, the parking lot where Sun steals a car, and the cabin in the forest.

MY EXPERIENCE IN MEXICO CITY
Today marks the end of my fourth month in Mexico-City. I still have some days left to enjoy this beautiful country -my final Mexican vacation to Tulum is coming up- but I have already made some incredible memories. I have met many new people who I will carry with me in thought when I head back to Amsterdam. Although these past couple of months were an experience I will never forget, it was difficult for me as well. First of all, the homesickness was evident and I had a month where all I did was count down the days until I would be back with my family and friends. In this period, I started thinking a lot about how I could turn my exchange into a valuable lesson. I gave me a great perspective of what I value in life regarding my friends, family, career, important factors and the future in general. The homesickness started when I began to ward off the Mexican culture. The cultural differences were so overwhelming for me that I just did not want to understand those difference and would rather hold on tight to my own. The size of the city was also quite overwhelming. I was used to my own city, where everything was familiar and that difference was something that I found difficult to accept.
After this month, I began noticing differences in my approach to Mexican culture and I started to appreciate them a lot more. The realization of the beauty of Mexican culture started when I noticed the people’s response to the earthquake. Everybody was helping out in some way and stood together through this horrible disaster. Moreover, I noticed that Mexico is portrayed in such a negative manner by the media that does not align with reality at all. Of course, corruption and narcos are real, but they do not affect Mexicans in a way that I initially thought. The people of Mexico will fight through everything that is being thrown at them, no matter how hard that might be, and there is nothing that will stop them.
Many more of my prejudges were thrown out the window during this period. I expected the people in Mexico to be racist and homophobic, but the people that I encountered were far from that. Furthermore, I got to be educated on the real problems that Mexico faces. Indigenous people in this country are not as valued as citizens that can add value to the national income, which is a big reason as to why the gap in wealth is so large. It made me have more compassion for this issue because I had a chance to see it with my own eyes. There are evident problems that do not get the media coverage that these people deserve. Therefore, raising awareness to it as individuals is important to take the first step towards change.
For the future of Mexico, I sincerely hope that indigenous people will have the rights they deserve, regarding better living conditions and the preserving of their land. Overall, the country is beautiful and has a lot of potential. My heart goes out to the Mexican people that are currently being forgotten about. I have high hopes for the future generations. Peers who I have talked to are very passionate about improving the conditions of this country. I can only admire that, just like I admire the strength of the people and the vision to preserve the culture and land that this country offers.
Mexico, thank you for one of the most valuable times in my life. I will carry it with me forever.

Sense8 #201 “A Christmas Special”
In the Sense8 Christmas special, months go by and the sensates live their lives, some in hiding and some free, and adapt to their new circumstance while investigating the forces arrayed against them.
I’m doing something a bit different with this review, rather than doing the whole episode in chronological order, I’m splitting the locations by filming city with their own little maps. Also, this post is super-long. So so many locations.
The first San Francisco scenes are of Nomi & Amanita doing laundry in what we later learn is the Women’s Building. Well, the interior is actually played by the William Westerfeld House, an historic home dating back to 1889 with a storied history including time as a nightclub.
After the opening montage we head over to Amanita’s workplace at the City Lights Bookstore where she is harassed by Agent Bendix who has questions about Nomi’s whereabouts.
Amanita heads to the Women’s Building (the bottom floor being played by itself) while talking to Nomi over the phone.
On the sensates’ birthday Amanita takes Nomi for a picnic on Billy Goat Hill where they have a bit of a orgy. Apparently the production was fined by the Parks Department for the nudity involved in this scene.
After being driven out of the Women’s Building by Agent Bendix, Amanita & Nomi take up residence on Bug’s houseboat. The exterior of the boat is on the Mission Creek dock, while the interiors are played by a houseboat up north at 50 Liberty Dock in Sausalito.
Nomi & Amanita take Bug with them for Christmas dinner at Amanita’s parents’ house at 69 Deming Street which we saw last season.
The whole group then heads to the City Hall where they watch the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus put on a Christmas performance.
Early in the episode Lito’s secret is revealed to the world, and when he next returns to his condo with Hernando and Dani they find a slur written on the front of his building. This is the same lobby used last season (that I only recently identified) located at Zamora 75 in the La Condesa neighborhood.
Dani, Hernando, and Lito go out dancing for Lito’s birthday at Salón de Baile los Ángeles, the oldest dance club in Mexico City dating from 1937.
Lito meets with his agents and manager up in the Porsche Centre Santa Fé.
Lito returns once again to his condo at Calle Río Balsas 37 only to find himself locked out and all of his stuff removed.
For the Christmas celebrations Hernando, Dani, Lito, and his mother head over to the nearby of Metepec where they celebrate at Capilla del Calvario.
Finally, on New Years Eve, Lito joins Hernando at the Nuevo Panteón Jardín cemetery where Hernando’s parents are buried.
We get our first brief glimpse of the new Capheus with him walking down an alley north of Kirinyaga Road in Nairobi Central.
He ends up in an lot full of auto shops at the end of that road where he works on the damaged Van Damn with Jela before it meets an unfortunate end.
Capheus receives a brand new Van Damn at his birthday celebration on an unnamed road running through Kibera to the southwest of downtown.
Capheus and Jela drop off their first group of passengers at the Nairobi Railway Station downtown when they learn that several of the passengers want to stay on and ride back to gather courage from the spirit of Van Damme.
The episode begins with Kala swimming in the Positano Bay while on her honeymoon with Rajan. While Kala climbs out of the water in Positano, all of the underwater shots were filmed in a water tank in Malta.
Kala and Rajan are staying at the Villa San Giacomo on the cliff overlooking the town where they have a very eventful first attempt at sex together.
Rajan throws Kala a birthday party on the beach in front of Music on the Rocks, a nightclub built into the very stone of the cliff.
Back in Mumbai after their honeymoon Rajan & Kala look at a new home for their life together. This is a combination of two nearby locations on Nariman Point, the interior and balcony are located above Gallery 7 across from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (a museum) while the rooftop pool is located a few blocks away on the roof of the InterContinental Hotel Marine Drive.
The first Chicago scene is not filmed in Chicago at all, but in neighboring Gary, Indiana. The ruined City Methodist Church returns as the abandoned church where Angelica kills herself in Will’s vision. This church, which dates back to the 1920s, was heavily damaged by arson in 1997.
The next location is in Chicago, but takes place in Amsterdam. On Christmas evening, Riley takes Will out to go ice skating on a frozen pond in Sherman Park only to have their date rudely interrupted by Whispers.
Whispers talks to them from Will’s father’s house which is located at 5414 North Paulina Street on the north side of the city.
And finally we come to Berlin, which opens with a shot of Lito in his hot tub back in Mexico City filmed at Monbijouplatz 12 looking out at Museum Island.
Felix wakes from his coma and Wolfgang takes him back to the locksmith shop located in an empty storefront at Schlesische Straße 39, same as last season.
Back near Museum Island Wolfgang is sitting outside in Monbijoupark when Kala shows up and marvels at her first experience with snow.
During the Christmas celebrations Wolfgang is sitting on the steps of the Konzerthaus Berlin when Felix arrives with a few ladies.
On New Years Eve Wolfgang and Felix attend a party hosted by Volker Bohm at Palais am Pariser Platz which looks out at the Brandenburg Gate.
Felix and Wolfgang are walking down Hohenzollerndamm in the southwest part of the city when they witness a man gunned down by Volker Bahn’s men. This scene was shot in with a bunch of fake snow in March, and the fight scene immediately following it was shot in the studio.
