James Robinson and George Pérez launch new version of the New Warriors for Marvel's 2018 'Fresh Start' Relaunch.
Tumblr media
Marvel is relaunching New Warriors under the guidance of writer James Robinson and artist George Pérez. The original Warriors gets the band together again, for better or worst. Seemingly mostly the worst.
Robinson described his take on the series in an interview with Marvel.com:
“These are young adults who spend their teens together, helped each other grow up to the adults they are today. But they haven’t been a team for a while now, plenty of things has happened and there are plenty of things unsaid between these six friends. Reforming the team won’t be easy. Speedball is the one who has gone through most changes. He has undergone so much trauma and grown better and stronger for it. But like the others, he has a lot of anger to work through, sadly toward his five oldest friends as well.”
New Warriors #1 hits comic shops and ComiXology the day before the moon turns into a red cheese.
Happy Aprill’s fools day.

But they only changed her costume. Movies and TV shows has an effect on comics, yes, but not THAT big an effect. Iron Man became pretty much everyone’s favorite hero after his first movie, but that didn’t change that he was the guy all the heroes in the mainstream comics were pissed at.
Is it annoying that the Warriors are going to be a comedic show? Sure. But then again, if the show is a hit, then the interest for the Warriors will grow, people will look up the old comics and say: “hey, these comics are pretty neat” and the fanbase will grow.
And none of us can see into the future. We can’t judge it yet.
Tumblr media
The lineup for the New Warriors TV show has been revealed!  It’s:
Mister Immortal
Night Thrasher
Speedball
Microbe
Debrii
AND SQUIRREL GIRL
and of course TIPPY-TOE
You can read more at USA Today and enjoy that exclusive art by Elizabeth Torque of the characters above!

History of the NW (part 9)
Before we talk about what happened to the Warriors during Evan Skolnik’s run, I better introduce you to the three (or four) heroes who joined the team before Skolnik became the Warrior’s writer.
First of all, there’s Turbo. Turbo is a name shared by two people: Mike Jeffries and Michiko ‘Mickey’ Musashi.
Tumblr media
You see, Mike found an old superhero suit that had once been used by the superhero Torpedo. Not aware of this, Mike gave it to his best friend Mickey so that she could use it as a Halloween costume. But they both quickly learned that the suit could make the person wearing it capable of flying at high speed as well as creating powerful wind gusts. The two friends decided to share the suit. Mike was a comic nerd, so he wanted to become a superhero. But Micky was not as interested in superheroics and just liked using the suit for transportation and to get to exotic places in no time. So they took turns in using the suit.
Unfortunately, Mike sucked at using the suit, so when the Warriors asked Turbo to join the Warriors, they were only interested in Micky who could actually use it without endangering others as well as herself. Tough break, Mike:(
Tumblr media
Alex Power was the oldest child of Dr. James Power, a physicist who worked for the United States government on a means of producing large quantities of energies cheaply through combining matter and anti-matter. An alien named Aelfyre Whitemane (nicknamed “Whitey”) learned of the doctor’s discovery and intended to stop it. Whitemane knew that a device such as Dr. Power’s would (despite good intentions) trigger a chain reaction that would destroy the Earth.
Because inventions that actually BENEFITS mankind is not allowed in the Marvel Universe:P
Moreover, he knew that Power’s device was sought by alien Z’nrx, nicknamed “Snarks,” who intended to use it to conquer inhabited worlds.
When Snarks captured Dr. Power and his wife Margaret, intending to force him to reveal the secret of his device, Whitemane saved the Powers’s children, Alex, Julie, Jack, and Katie, from being captured, but he himself was fatally wounded in the process. Dying, Whitemane transferred four of his superpowers into each of the four Power children, and asked them to use their new abilities to save their world. Alex received the power to control gravity, and called himself Gee. The kids rescued their parents, and destroyed Dr. Power’s dangerous matter/anti-matter machine, thereby saving the Earth from destruction. The four children have since continued to have adventures as the team Power Pack.
Some time later, Alex was contacted to help save the New Warriors from the Sphinx. For this adventure he was convinced to absorb the powers of his siblings and help the Warriors as Powerpax. After the adventure, he returned his siblings powers and promised not to steal them again. But soon after the Warriors needed his help again, and he broke his promise. This time, however, he realized how dangerous it was for children to be superheroes, and decided not to give his siblings their powers back.
,.. OR he didn’t give them back their powers because he wanted to be in a teenage superteam.
Why not? Older brothers can be jerks!
And then there’s Carlton LaFroyge AKA Hindsight. Carlton is most likely the LEAST liked New Warrior ever.
... And he is my favorite member of the team:)
Tumblr media
Carl was Robbie Baldwin’s neighbor who by accident stumbled across a scrapbook identifying Robbie as Speedball. Carl was a huge fan of everything superhero related, so he promised Robbie not to reveal his secret if he was allowed to join the team. Robbie and the Warriors grudgingly agreed, but mostly ignored Hindsight Lad. And when they actually talked to him, they usually just insulted him.
Then again, blackmailing your way into a team is not a good way to make a first impression:)
Despite Carl’s lack of powers as well as the Warriors’ lack of faith in him, Carl proved to be surprisingly useful with his talents for tactics and tech.
Anyway, Skolnik’s run on the New Warriors started at issue 54 where the Warriors traveled to some fictional desert country where there’s war going on, innocent people gets hurt and everything sucks (there’s a lot of those in Marvel), but they are short on team members since Night Thrasher and Rage are out doing there own thing (Thrash had his own solo series where Rage was his sidekick). It ends in a disaster when they face the evil dasterdly basterdly villain team called the Soldiers Of Misfortune.
Yep, ridicules 90′s name. And their leader is the most 90est of all 90′s villains: Protocol.
Seriously, LOOK at this guy:
Tumblr media
Wow. I mean, just.. WOW!
I’ve seen some silly 90′s bad guys, but this one takes the cake.
He is big, naked, has spikes and claws, AND he doesn’t have a penis. That’s probably why he is so evil.
Anyway, most of the Warriors ended up getting caught by Protocol. Except for Nova who calls in Hindsight and asks him for his help with locating the Soldiers of Misfortune as well as getting Alex and Turbo to help saving the rest of the team.
Skolnik’s run on the Warriors was not the best stories ever written, but it was still pretty damn good... or as good as it could be with all the ridicules 90′s stuff going on in the Marvel U. He obviously did his homework on the Warriors when he took over the titles and made several references to past stories and even tied up old knots from Fabian Nicieza’s run. AND he made Hindsight relevant to the plot by shoving us that even though Carlton could only help from the sideline, he still did his part for the team. You could call him the Jarvis of the New Warriors.
Anyway, Nova and the reserve Warriors finds the submarine where all the other Warriors are stashed in and saves them... except for Namorita who has been brainwashed and now only serves Protocol.
After a daring escape from the submarine, Nova was kinda pissed at Night Thrasher for not being around when they actually needed him. The other Warriors agreed, and Thrash and Rage were kicked out of the team.
Tumblr media
... which is kinda weird when you think about it. After all, the New Warriors are actually Thrash’s team. He pays for everything, including their headquarter, transportation and other resources.
That’s all for now. I’m Waezi2, and thanks for wasting time with me.

Up yours, Sam Wilson!
I actually don’t have a problem with Sam being Captain America. After all, he is one of Steve’s best friends, has been his crime-fighting partner for years and he is no pushover in the superhero biz.
So I have nothing against Sam carrying the shield.
What I DO have a problem with is... THIS:
Tumblr media
... Okay, at least 50 percent of that is not true. First of all, Rage wasn’t kicked out of the Avengers because of his age, it was because he helped the New Warriors steal a jet. Secondly, he wasn’t with the Warriors during the Stamford incident because he was in boarding school. And he DIDN’T join the Initiative Program to “atone for that mistake”(seriously, WHAT mistake?).
Alright, so all that is just the result of Spencer not doing his research properly. Ain’t the first time a writer neglected to do that.
But here is what pisses me off:
Tumblr media
... Sam, you are an asshole!
You just bashed the New Warriors, Rage’s FRIENDS, in court! You told them that they were a bad team and that Rage is a good guy for leaving them! WHILE Rage was listening!
NOT COOL, BRO! NOT COOL!

Actually, its not that bad when you think about it. Thrash WAS a rich punk with a chip on his shoulder. That was a resurrecting theme in the first series that he was an angry young man who had an tendency to act in haste and was not always the most polite one. And the thing about them being irresponsible and arrogant was not something only Iron Man thought when thinking New Warriors, most of the Avengers didnt have high thoughts about the team(especially after the Warriors stole the Avengers jet to save Thrash). If anything, Tony seems to understand Thrash surprisingly well and probably knows what it was like for the young rich man with an agenda. And he didnt say that they were arrogant, only that they are considered arrogant by the public.
I think you judge this write-up way too harshly, Oxymitch. And even if you are right about Tony being biased about the Warriors, then that is something Marvel heroes still are today. Sam Wilson defended Rage in court by bashing his friends and told everyone what a great guy Rage was because he left the Warriors before the Stamford incident and joined the Initiative.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tony Stark’s write-up on the New Warriors. His writings are biased since Tony Stark in Civil War is an asshole.
- Civil War Files #1, 2006
(The last two pics are the highlighted cropped paragraphs which shows how much of an asshole Tony Stark is when he writes the biased report on New Warriors.)

Yeah... I should have mentioned that, but it was so complicated that I decided to leave it out. I did like that Vance had the chance to understand that even though his father wasnt a good man that he was a victim as well. It doesnt excuse him beating his son, but it helps to understand.
Also, we got to see the awesome kinetik dimension that gives Speedball his powers. Reminds me of the Speedforce. I will post a scan of it later.
History of the NW (part 8)
After issue 39, the series transformed into a true 90s comic series. And I don’t mean that as a compliment. Sure, the stories weren’t bad, but it felt like it had been forced to go under some changes to please the audience.
Too bad the audience grew up and realized the 90s were kinda stupid.
And YES, I know there was a lot of great comics during the 90s(mostly the late 90s) but there was a lot of dumb ones as well. And it’s too bad, since it was mostly because of this idea that superheroes had to be extreme and edgy and all that crap. And the New Warriors was no exception.
Just look at what they did to Vance once he finally got out of jail and changed his supername to Justice:
Tumblr media
Wow… It’s worse than I remembered.
As I said before, all the Warriors underwent a 90s makeovers that included new(and most of the time not that great) costumes. The one who underwent the greatest change was probably Namorita.
In case you didn’t know, Namorita is the daughter of Namor’s cousin Namora… except, she is actually a clone of her mother who had been implanted inside her “mother’s” womb so she could be born like a normal child. And because of a whole lot of mad science reasons, she transformed into a new super Atlantean, took the name Kymaera, and now look like this:
Tumblr media
Issue 40 to 53 was probably the least best issues of Nicieza’s run. The series focused too much on being edgy and mature and lacked the superhero fun it used to have. And some reeeeealy weird things happened that we were suppose to take serious, like when Rage…Rage he…
… Damn, it’s almost too much. It’s so stupid that it almost prevents me from typing it down..
Rage… began dating an adult single mom. It was mentioned in a few issues, and then everyone forgot all about it, and thank god for that.
Let’s never mention it again. EVER!
Starting from issue 54, Evan Skolnik became the writer of the next 21 issues before the series was canceled. More about that next time.
I’m Waezi2, and thanks for wasting time with me.

Nova X Namorita
I know that Marvel Comics want Gamora and Rich Rider to be a thing, but I miss Nita and Rich being a couple. It was short-lived because of Erik Larsen who became the writer of the third Nova series and made Rich break up with Nita in the first issue for a terrible reason.
But it was nice as long as it lasted...

Let Me Just Point Out Why This Scene is So Great -
1. A Tarnished Brand?
You know this had to be a jab at the Marvel Editorial staff. Not everyone on it, but I’m sure it was aimed at some of them. Because ever since their first series was canceled, the New Warriors have had a hard time gaining any traction, so you know that when this book was pitched this was the response they got. And seeing as how there are so many Avengers teams right now and the Avengers have become something of a franchise, when Cap suggest that his team be folded into the Avengers, you know that had to be someone at the Editorial staff saying “Can’t we call them the Avenger Warriors, or something along those lines?”
Also Vance’s response to it is great. Pointing out how crazy it is to refer to a team of characters as a brand kind of points out how insulting that is. Every character has a story, every character has a fan, so to take them and basically run them through test groups and market research to figure out how they can grow their brand or figure out how to manipulate them and their stories to fit into someone else’s brand, kind of damages what we love about them.
2. They Bring Up Civil War and Flip It
From the moment this book’s first issue came out, people have been saying “When are they going to talk about Civil War?” because yeah, the New Warriors screwed up big during that and the events of that will haunt them forever. Everyone has been pointing their fingers at them and saying “Yeah when are you going to face up to your massive screw ups?” And here they finally do it… and they flip that finger right back around at you.
When Vance tells Cap and Iron Man that ,”Yes, we did screw up in Stamford… But you two screwed up just as big in that whole Civil War thing. Yeah, remember that? Want to drag all the stuff you two did during that back up?” This is fantastic because it just turned to the audience and said it is not going to be a book where they’re stuck in the past, it’s a book about making up for that past with super heroics and moving forward.
3. Vance Quits the Avengers
I remember when Vance first joined the Avengers, it was his dream, he was so happy about it and he started to look at the New Warriors, his old team, as sort of something to forget about, just a part of his life he had outgrown. And after Stamford he looked at the New Warriors as sort of something to be ashamed of. But over the past several months in this series and in Nova, we’ve seen Speedball trying to convince Vance that the world still needed the New Warriors.
But here we have Vance facing his two biggest heroes, and telling them that this goof off next to him is his friend, those goof offs in that mountain are his team, and if the Avengers can’t understand the good that they’ve done and the importance of their team, then he’ll side with them over the Avengers any day.
-
I hope this book sticks around for years and that its audience grows to the size it should be, but even if it is canceled tomorrow this scene to me finally fixed the New Warriors.

Possibly the best Nova moment ever
The best Nova moment is NOT one where he flies in space or punches a bad guy in the face.
The best one, if you ask me, involves his brave as hell genius brother Robbie.
A street-gang learned the secret identity of Nova (Click HERE to see how) and kidnapped Rich’s little brother Robbie in order to blackmail him. AND, just to make it worse, they cut off one of Robbie’s fingers!
Dark...
So, Rich is feeling bad about his bro getting hurt and naturally blames himself. And then we got THIS little golden moment from New Warriors issue 39:

History of the NW (part 7)
So, Kimeiko Ashu now knows the Warriors’ true identities and orders his goons to kidnap their family.
... But it seems like gang-members aren’t the brightest bunch, since some of them thought that “kidnap Rage’s grandmother” meant: “blow up Rage’s house with a bazooka.”
No, really! They LITERALLY blew up Rage’s house with a bazooka!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dude! Not only is that tragic and very dark, but it’s also overkill!
No pun intended.
Firestar’s dad got shot in the chest... apparently, they ran out of bazookas or they couldn’t get a tank in time.
Yeah, I kid, but this is probably the Warriors’ darkest hour. Rage’s granny died, Firestar’s father survived, but barely, and the Poison Memory gang also kidnapped Bobby Rider (Nova’s little brother) and Justin Baldwin (Speedball’s father). Also, they cut off one of Bobby’s fingers, just to show that they weren’t messing around!
All of this actually shows the problem with having a member of your superteam with a public known identity (like Namorita). If the villain is smart enough, he/she can figure out a way to get the rest of the team’s secrets through said teammate.
So, knowing that their loved ones would pay the price if they refused to cooperate, the Warriors had to give themselves up to Ashu. The only one who would’t give up himself was Rage who was rightfully furious over losing his grandmother. So while the others were imprisoned, Rage was.. well, in a rage and tried to find Ashu so that he cold kill him with his bare hands.
Tumblr media
The rest of the Warriors were eventually freed from the warehouse they were chained up in by Night Thrasher who returned to the Warriors in their darkest hour to save his friends. They escaped and rescued Bobby and Speedball’s dad.
But Ashu wouldn’t go down without a fight, and had a surprise prepared for the Warriors: A AIM tech suit!
Tumblr media
I know that some of you are probably calling bullcrap on Ashu having technology like that, that the leader of a street-gang shouldn’t have access to that sort of weapons. But here is the thing: Ashu is the leader of a gang... In the Marvel universe. Having guns and pocketknives aren’t enough in a world of superheroes. If the law gets an upgrade, then the criminals need one as well. Most of Spider-Man’s villains are street tugs who just had an upgrade when you think about it.
Anyway, Ashu used his mechsuit and his blood-thirst to fight the Warriors and even knocked them out, even though he ended up getting pretty banged up himself. As he was about to kill Thrash, Rage appeared and (despite Thash’s protests) snapped Ashu’s neck.
Tumblr media
... Wow... Poor 14 year old Rage... His early teens was F&%¤ed up!
Rage got arrested for murder, but the court decided to let him go since he (and the police) claimed that he acted in self defense. But since Elvin was still a minor, he ended up having Dwayne Taylor (Night Thrasher) as his legal guardian.
After this horrible event, the Warriors took some time to lick their wounds. Firestar stayed in the hospital and prayed that her dad would recover from his bullet wound(he did, hooray!), Speedball patched things up with his dad whom he hadn’t talked with for a while since his parents got divorced, Thrash made sure that Rage’s grandmother had a proper funeral and... Well, here is one of my favorite Nova moments where Rich talks to his little bro about what happened to him while he was kidnapped:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Awww... Sniff...
The one who took the whole event the hardest was Namorita. Understandable, since it was her drunkenness that allowed Ashu to hurt the Warriors the way he did. So she decided to leave the team until she could get herself together.
But not before kissing Rich for the first time.
Tumblr media
It didn’t come out of nowhere, really. The two of them had been flirting from the first day they became New Warriors and they got along really well. Just to bad that Nita left for weeks after that goodbye kiss.
That’s all for now. I’m Waezi2, and thanks for wasting time with me.
