there was a pounding in ezra's head as she finally came-to, the sound of her alarm the only thing rousing her from the deepest sleep she'd ever experienced. it'd been a while since she'd last slept to begin with, and she was scared to check just how long she'd been out for. reaching for her phone in dread, she paused when she felt the sheets rub across the bare skin of her torso, and suddenly her eyes were wide open. she was in an unfamiliar bedroom --- in an unfamiliar bed --- and that in and of itself freaked her out. every memory from the night previously hit her all at once: a crowded bar, a friendly-yet-handsome face, too many shots to count. ezra james wasn't one for random hookups, but apparently her drunk alter ego had other plans.

sitting upright in the bed, she hugged the sheets closer to her frame before she rubbed at her eyes, willing her headache away as she heard footsteps approaching. all she could really do was act normal, or whatever people considered to be normal. her face was still covered as someone answered the room, and her voice came out in a muffled grumble. "please tell me i managed to not embarrass myself last night. and if i didn't, do me a favor and lie to me so i don't have to do a walk of shame home."

"you're surprised," ezra stated bluntly. "about me wanting to coming with you? you're surprised. i managed to throw you for a loop." when it came to cosmo, she had a sixth sense, and it was hard for her to prevent a tiny smirk from appearing on the corner of her mouth. "i would never disclose details about your clients, uncle cosmo; if anything, whatever i write will be severely exaggerated. that's the benefit of my job." she was already looking towards the door, her head tilting ever so slightly. "we should probably dress warm, right?"

Cosmo watched Ezra carefully; by now, she rarely just agreed to something when she didn't really want to, but he could never be too sure, but as she seemed to perk up at the idea after a moment, he smiled. "Well, it's not rickety, but it's a pretty small motor boat." He admitted. "You definitely could get a novel out of this, as long as you don't involve whoever hired me, which I will keep under wraps from now on. But everything else is fair game. I won't tell if you embellish some details."

Christmas on Cherry Lane (2023)

We have another Hallmark movie that is available on Netflix until the end of the month! I usually prefer to find stills from the movie, but I had to go with the cover art for this one because it's the only time all of our central characters are in the same place at the same time. This is a fun story of a house, 7 Cherry Lane to be exact, and the various families and their Christmases in the house. We have one from 1973, one from 1999, and one from 2023. They are interspersed throughout the film, but there are connections between them. For the sake of ease, we'll go in chronological order.

In 1973, Lizzie Hamilton (Erin Cahill) and John Hamilton (John Brotherton) are spending their second day in their new home decorating because it's also Christmas Eve and they want a quiet Christmas as Lizzie is two weeks out from her due date. Things become less quiet when Lizzie's mom Evelyn Sawyer (Lynda Boyd) and dad Frank Sawyer (Fred Henderson) show up unannounced and declare that they are staying for Christmas and have also invited Lizzie's brother Brett Sawyer (James Kot) who will come with his wife Olivia (Katherine Isabelle) and their son Peter (Ezra Wilson) and Lizzie's sister Vicky Baker (Darby Steeves) and her husband Steve (Julian Haig). Things go even more awry when John's shop gets broken into and he has to leave to meet Officer Greg Johnston (Garrett Black) during the blizzard to take care of it.

In 1999, Conrad Johnston (Matthias Falvai) and his sister Winnie (Veronica Long) arrive at their childhood home to have Christmas with their widowed mom Regina (Catherine Bell) and her fiancé Nelson (James Denton). However, when Conrad and Winnie find out that once they are married, Regina and Nelson plan to sell the house and retire to Florida, they get very upset. Conrad tries to relive their childhood memories that they had with their father to try to change Regina's mind, but Regina sees through this pretty quickly and loses patience for it when it interferes with her cooking. Conrad leaves to meet his friend Ivy (Eva Tavares) who is preparing to take in a foster child on Christmas Eve.

In 2023, Mike Harrelson (Jonathon Bennett) and his husband Zian Harrelson (Vincent Rodriguez III) are trying to plan a Christmas Eve dinner party, but the kitchen remodel is taking longer than expected and the contractor Quinn Lewis (Robert Moloney) doesn't seem to understand the urgency that Mike is feeling. Things go even further awry when Mike and Zian find out that they are getting a foster placement that night and Quinn blows a fuse and has to call an electrician. Mike decides to just cook the dinner at the restaurant he works at with the help of a kind neighbor Daisy (Brandi Alexander) but Mike runs into car trouble and a storm has hit the town, so now he is stuck at the restaurant with Daisy. Daisy does show up in every plot line, but this is the one where she is the most present. Also, props to hair and makeup because in 1973, she's in college, so by 2023, she's about 70, and it's all the same actress.

I love a good parallel plot line that is ultimately connected by some random thread. There are characters that appear in two of the plot lines, Ivy, Winnie, and Zian. But neighbor Daisy is in all three. This was a fun one that really celebrates people. I very much enjoyed it. Overall, 4 stars.

Kids. It had never been on the table for them. In the few years since they first met, both had made it very clear how they felt about adding to their family and fortunately, being on the same page of ‘four legged additions only’ made their life easy. That was, however, until today. She hadn’t even considered the possibility, they took the usual precautions and had not been trying, but naturally, she knew that it wasn’t a fool-proof system. She just hadn’t expected the test she bought to come back positive, nor did she expect him to come home early and find it in the waste basket before she had chance to bring it up with him. 

“That’s not what I’m saying and you know it.” Mira replied, the air between them almost able to be sliced with a knife as she stared at him across the room. His question disappointed her quite a bit, somewhat because he did not wish to go, but mainly because of the eye candy comment. He had never been that in her eyes and she hoped that he was aware of that; maybe it was the frustration talking, who knew? “This wasn’t exactly something that I wanted to just talk about over the phone, I didn’t know you were going to come by the house early. It deserves a proper discussion but there’s no time for it right now. If you don’t want to come tonight, fine. I’ll tell Dan that you’re not feeling well and that’ll be that. I want you there, but it’s your call.” With a small sigh, she lowered herself onto the bed so that she could pull her heels on with ease, averting her gaze from him as she allowed him to consider what he wanted.

being in a pack was still an adjustment for ezra. she'd been a literal lone wolf ever since she'd received that life-changing bite, usually locking herself away during a full moon to ensure she couldn't hurt anyone. but moving to dreadmoor keep had been a welcome change, and after a few years of settling in and meeting people, she somehow became part of a found family. it wasn't that she didn't like it, but rather it took some time getting used to. there were certain people within the pack that she stuck close to, and jj was at the top of the list. if he hated having her around, he never said anything to her about it.

laptop hugged closely to her chest, ezra made her way inside, her intent on getting a few chapters written in the back of her mind. sometimes it was easier for her to write when others were around, even if they chose not to talk to her. but as she stepped inside to find jj, she stopped for a long moment, lips parting in surprise. "oh, hi," she greeted, clearing her throat of the squeak it had just produced. "i just...i was gonna get some writing done. but i don't want to disturb you, so i can go back home if you need me to."

Earthlings, we come in peace! Strange things are afoot in Roswell, New Mexico, and it isn’t just the smell of the Crashdown Café after dark. Reports have been filed all over claiming to have experienced strange flashing lights in the sky, and the owner of Puhlman’s Ranch has been stumbling across some very strange looking circles in his fields. The conspiracy theorists are running rife with ideas and explanations, waving around supposed evidence of alien activity and ranting to the locals with colanders balanced precariously upon their heads. Whether the extraterrestrial activity is merely juvenile hijinks or something more, there are clues to be had all over town to the strange goings on; this month, ensure that your muse’s eyes are trained on the sky. You don’t want to miss a thing.

The MCU version of what's happening to the DCEU

For this to work we must figure the MCU cast and character equivalent to the DCEU. Robert Downey Jr/Iron Man = Ben Affleck/Batman, Chris Evans/Captain America = Henry Cavill/Superman, Chris Hemsworth/Thor = G*l G*dot/Wonder Woman. Ignoring Ruffalo, Renner and Johansson temporarily because I wouldn't compare any of them to Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher and Ezra Miller just yet, lets say that James Rhodes was added to the Avengers roster so that Don Cheadle/War Machine = Ray Fisher/Cyborg.

so lets say that the MCU was in the Phase 1 and its first Avengers movie is about to be released. Due to a myriad of reasons however, the first Avengers movie doesn't do too well critically and at the box office and its plans for sequels and future character spinoffs are suddenly up in the air. Following the Avengers movie, sequels for Iron Man and Thor come after but Iron Man's future at Marvel Studios is suddenly in peril. If Robert Downey Jr. had immediate personal issues and experienced the same heavy studio inference, delays and meddling producers for Iron Man 3 just like Ben Affleck did with The Batman, then according to the outcome, Iron Man 3 would've been scrapped and Robert Downey would publicly step down from the role and movie. Iron Man would have then be relaunched into a solo universe separate from the MCU and subsequently recast with a different, younger actor altogether.

Next is Chris Hemsworth and Thor 2: The Dark World. If the equivalent to this actor and movie is G*l G*dot and Wonder Woman 1984, then not much changes happen here. According to critics however, the movie's tone is adjusted to be more lighter than the first and because of the plot, Thor is now a r*pist all of a sudden, just like in Wonder Woman 1984, but there's not much public controversy about it. It gets mixed reviews accordingly, though fan reception is not great.

Next is Chris Evans and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. If the equivalent to this actor and movie is Henry Cavill and the next Superman movie. But just like Henry Cavill and his character, Captain America never gets an official sequel announced due to the first Avengers movie doing so poorly, so say goodbye to any remaining plot threads, further character development and official appearances for Steve Rogers. There's eventually a scheduled cameo appearance for Chris in Ant Man (2015), just like Henry for Shazam (2019) but for some reason, scheduling conflicts or lack of proper payment, Chris can't film it and the headless body of Captain America appears instead.

So while all of this is happening, there was supposed to be solo films for War Machine and Black Widow too. What happened to them? Well, if the actor and character equivalent to Don Cheadle/War Machine is Ray Fisher and Scarlett Johansson/Black Widow is Ezra Miller/The Flash, then we can map both of those accordingly as well. If Don Cheadle had experienced the same racism and abuse on set of the first Avengers (2012) by the hands of Kevin Fiege the way Ray Fisher went through on Justice League (2017) by Geoff Johns , then the War Machine solo movie is quietly scrapped while Don Cheadle battles being blackballed, blacklisted and slandered in the media by Marvel Studios for years for speaking out what happened. War Machine was also listed to star in Black Widow but Don was fired from that movie too with no plans in development to feature him ever again.

Just like the Flash film, Black Widow was in development hell for years. Directors came and went with no actual start date to film. Eventually a director is hired and by the grace of god, Robert Downey Jr. is also slated to star in the film as Iron Man, just like Ben Affleck will with his Batman. However, spoilers and spoilers are leaked into the world and the plot of Black Widow is revealed: Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man is killed off in and replaced by an older version of Iron Man who hasn't been seen in 30 years and the plot of Black Widow has the solo purpose of soft-rebooting the MCU to fix in the older Iron Man's universe and Chris Evans' Captain America will also be retconned out of existence.

i was tagged by the incredibly artistic and talented @sage9991 for four songs that i’ve been playing on repeat. woo! music!

1. Lady, You Shot Me - Har Mar Superstar this song is my dream karaoke song, but no one ever has it. i really need the instrumental version of this asap. or a band that can just follow me around to karaoke places.

2. I Can’t Stand the Rain - Ann Peebles after going through a breakup last year, i finally had a chance to listen to the breakup playlist that i had been putting together for years. seriously, years. i figured i would need it someday. well that day came, and i learned breakup songs do not help in any sort of way - at least not the breakup songs i thought i would want to listen to before i’d had my heartbroken. i am not one to just listen to torch songs - can’t do it. however, i heard this in a bookstore a few months ago and it was a breakup song that actually worked for me. a little creepy, a little spooky, a lot cool.

3. Crimson & Clover - Tommy James & The Shondells coming up with an all-time favorite song is so hard. there are so many variables. it would have to fit so many different feelings and scenarios and whatnot. all i know is that every time I hear crimson & clover i am blissed out, feeling like i’m living my best hippie life in the 60s, and it does make me feel high without actually doing drugs.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space - Spiritualized story time! so over the summer i was having a particularly rough time with said breakup. my family has a cabin near sundance - the place robert redford owned until recently and set up his annual film festival, and is the area where they filmed butch cassidy and the sundance kid - which if you haven’t seen it, it has paul newman AND robert redford looking amazing and why is it again that you haven’t seen it? that wasn’t enough? did you forget how good looking and fun those dudes are? anyway, my great-grandfather built the cabin himself. about a mile away is a hike that leads to stewart falls - my falls. the waterfall i’ve been going to nearly every year of my life. which is a lot at this point lol. so i’m struggling with feeeeeeeeelings (ew) and decide I’m treking up to the waterfall to emote said feeeeeeeeelings. i climb up to a landing where the waterfall pools a bit before falling again. it was the perfect place. it was like someone had hollowed out the mountain to act as a giant megaphone to space - and i had beef with whatever is up there. so, it gets dark pretty quickly - i’m slightly wine drunk and high at this point - and the moon peaks over one side of the mountain, and this song comes on, and i’m just yelling it from my megaphone to the stars, trying to get aliens to feel my pain or something. this song is a perfect song. it is repetitive but builds to something (a favorite of mine), it has different threads of harmony that overlap and intertwine (another favorite of mine), he cops the lines of one of the greatest love songs of all-time (yet another favorite), and it is all laid on top of these lush strings that really do make me feel as though i’m floating through space. if you are needing some communication with something bigger, and want to get a bit drunk or high and emote, listen to ezra furman’s every feeling. duh. but then listen to this one ;)
