A #glaucoma treatment that skips the poke in the eye One of the ways researchers are exploring treating the #opticnerve damage of glaucoma is an injection directly into the #eye. But Suchismita Acharya, PhD, is studying a different approach that not only takes the pain out of treating this #blindingdisease but also holds the promise of curing it. “Wouldn’t an #eyedrop be so much better?” she said. “Who likes getting poked into the eye?” Dr. Acharya, a Research Assistant Professor in #Pharmacology & #Neuroscience and the North Texas #EyeResearch Institute, is working on a small #molecule that can #treatglaucoma by simultaneously decreasing #eyepressure and protecting neurons and #retinal ganglion #cells. “Such a compound could lower pressure in the front of the eye and also reach the back of the eye to protect #ganglioncells,” she said. “This could be a #cureforglaucoma.” Her lab has designed and synthesized a unique nanosuspension eye drop of the new hybrid molecule that can reach to the #backoftheeye. It can easily be manufactured and used to #targetglaucoma, Dr. Acharya said. By 2020, more than 76 million people are estimated to be affected by glaucoma, which is associated with #elevatedeyepressure and progressive death of #retinalganglioncells. Dr. Acharya said the unique design of the drug makes it possible to both decrease #intraocularpressure and prevent retinal ganglion cell death. BrightFocus Foundation has awarded a $150,000 research grant to Dr. Acharya to further explore this approach. #Gene Regulator May Contribute to Protein Pileup in Exfoliation #Glaucoma In exfoliation glaucoma, a #protein dandruff clogs the outflow pathway for the fluid in our #eyes. A recent study shows that variants of the same gene that enables us to make connective tissue by #crosslinking proteins is associated with this unusual glaucoma. #Scientists have been examining #RNA in human #eyetissue, that helps control LOXL1 gene expression, with the idea that it may be a culprit in the destructive pileup of LOXL1 protein inside the #eye. A new $440,000 #grant from the #NationalEyeInstitute is helping Dr. Yutao Liu and his colleagues further explore the relationship between the gene and this long, noncoding RNA dubbed “lncLOXL1”. The team aims to find treatment targets for this glaucoma, which is generally more aggressive and difficult to treat than primary #openangleglaucoma, its more common counterpart. Geneticist Liu from the Department of Cellular #Biology and #Anatomy at the #Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University expands: “Variants of this gene are associated with the #eyedisease in every population we have studied worldwide.” They established that the expression of LOXL1 was consistently elevated early in the process of glaucoma development in every population. High levels of LOXL1 protein that clog outflow tracts for the eye’s #aqueoushumor also are a constant in all those #patients.
