What Are the Symptoms of Glaucoma? Early Signs, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options
What Are the Symptoms of Glaucoma? Early Signs, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options
Tumblr media
Introduction
Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated. Often called the "silent thief of sight," it develops gradually and may go unnoticed until significant vision loss occurs. Understanding the symptoms of glaucoma is crucial for early detection and treatment. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed below, it’s vital to consult a specialist at an Eye Clinic in Shrewsbury, UK, as soon as possible.
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma refers to a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which is essential for good vision. This damage is often caused by abnormally high pressure in the eye, though glaucoma can develop even with normal eye pressure. The most common types of glaucoma include open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma, each with distinct symptoms and progression.
Early Symptoms of Glaucoma:
1. Gradual Loss of Peripheral Vision
One of the earliest signs of glaucoma is the gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision. This symptom may be subtle and can go unnoticed, especially since the brain compensates by filling in gaps in the field of view. Over time, this loss of peripheral vision can progress to tunnel vision.
2. Blurred Vision
Blurred vision is another common symptom, especially when reading or focusing on objects close up. This may be more noticeable during the early stages of glaucoma and can be a sign that pressure within the eye is increasing.
3. Halos Around Lights
Seeing halos around lights, particularly at night, is a symptom often associated with angle-closure glaucoma. This happens due to the increased pressure within the eye, which can cause the cornea to swell slightly, leading to these visual disturbances.
4. Eye Pain or Discomfort
While glaucoma is usually painless, acute angle-closure glaucoma can cause severe eye pain. This type of glaucoma is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention. The pain is often accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.
5. Redness of the Eye
A red eye can be a sign of various eye conditions, including glaucoma. Redness in glaucoma is usually related to increased intraocular pressure, and it’s important not to dismiss this symptom, especially if it’s persistent.
6. Frequent Headaches
Frequent headaches, particularly around the eyes or temples, can be an early warning sign of glaucoma. These headaches may be due to the strain that increased eye pressure places on the optic nerve.
Advanced Symptoms of Glaucoma:
1. Severe Loss of Peripheral Vision
As glaucoma progresses, the loss of peripheral vision becomes more pronounced. This can lead to tunnel vision, where only a small central area of vision remains. Without treatment, this central vision can also be lost, leading to blindness.
2. Sudden Vision Loss
Sudden, severe vision loss is a critical symptom that typically indicates advanced glaucoma or a sudden spike in eye pressure. This is a medical emergency, and immediate treatment is essential to prevent permanent vision loss.
3. Coloured Rings Around Lights
In more advanced stages, glaucoma can cause coloured rings (often blue, red, or rainbow-hued) to appear around lights. This is due to the damage caused to the optic nerve and the build-up of fluid in the eye.
4. Nausea and Vomiting
In cases of acute angle-closure glaucoma, the increase in eye pressure can lead to nausea and vomiting, along with severe pain. This combination of symptoms should never be ignored and requires immediate medical attention.
Why Early Detection is Crucial:
Glaucoma is often asymptomatic in its early stages, which is why regular eye exams are essential, especially if you’re over 40, have a family history of glaucoma, or belong to a higher-risk group. Early detection allows for effective management of the condition, often through eye drops, laser treatment, or surgery, to prevent further vision loss.
Risk Factors for Glaucoma:
1. Age
Glaucoma is more common in older adults, particularly those over 60. However, it can occur at any age.
2. Family History
Having a family history of glaucoma significantly increases your risk of developing the condition.
3. Medical Conditions
Certain medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease can increase the risk of glaucoma.
4. High Eye Pressure
People with high intraocular pressure (IOP) are at a greater risk of developing glaucoma. Regular eye exams can help monitor IOP levels.
5. Ethnic Background
Glaucoma is more prevalent among people of African, Asian, and Hispanic descent.
Diagnosis of Glaucoma
Diagnosis typically involves a series of eye tests, including:
1. Tonometry
This test measures the pressure inside your eye (intraocular pressure).
2. Ophthalmoscopy
This allows the doctor to examine the optic nerve for signs of damage.
3. Perimetry
Also known as a visual field test, this checks for areas of vision loss.
4. Pachymetry
This test measures the thickness of your cornea, which can influence eye pressure readings.
Treatment Options for Glaucoma
1. Medications
Eye drops are the most common treatment and are used to reduce intraocular pressure. In some cases, oral medications may be prescribed.
2. Laser Treatment
Laser therapy can help to improve the drainage of fluid from the eye, reducing pressure.
3. Surgery
In more severe cases, surgery may be required to create a new drainage channel for eye fluid, or to reduce the production of fluid within the eye.
Living with Glaucoma
Living with glaucoma requires regular monitoring and adherence to treatment plans. While there is no cure for glaucoma, its progression can be slowed significantly with proper treatment. Patients are advised to attend regular check-ups at their Eye Clinic in Shrewsbury, UK, to ensure that their condition is being managed effectively.
Conclusion
Glaucoma is a potentially devastating condition, but with early detection and treatment, it can be managed effectively. Recognising the symptoms and seeking prompt medical advice is crucial in preserving your vision. Regular eye examinations, particularly if you are in a high-risk group, can help to detect glaucoma in its early stages. If you notice any symptoms or have concerns about your eye health, don’t hesitate to visit an Eye Clinic in Shrewsbury, UK, for a thorough assessment.
Remember, your vision is precious, and early intervention can make all the difference in maintaining your quality of life.

Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital is now an IAPB member
Tumblr media
Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, doing over 93,000 eye surgeries annually, is the largest super speciality eye hospital network in Eastern India. Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital operates in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand with 6 eye hospitals, 36+ eye clinics and a network of 880+ beds. The eye hospital, owned and run by Yugrishi Shriram Sharma Acharya Charitable Trust, woirks towards eliminating curable blindness from low-income geographies by providing free of cost sight-restoring cataract surgeries to the underprivileged patients.
Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, which is now a part of IAPB (International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness), has been providing comprehensive, accessible, high-quality and affordable eye care services to the community for the last 18+ years.
Problem of blindness in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh
1 out of 4 blind people in the world live in India, and the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh share a significant burden of this visually impaired population. Within India, the combined population of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh (UP) can make it the third most populous country in the world, and in contrast, these are the two states with the highest population of visually impaired and blind people.
The cloudy reality of Bihar
Bihar, India's most densely populated state with a population of around 13 crores and the lowest GDP per capita, is the worst vision impairment-hit state, with an estimated 33 lakh visually impaired people. Around 4,65,120 people are blind in Bihar. Cataract is the primary reason for blindness in Bihar. Cataract is the clouding of the natural lens of the eye leading to partial or complete blindness, mostly occurs in the older population. Only 18% of those with refractive errors in rural areas of Bihar receive vision correction treatment, compared to 82% in urban areas.
People in Bihar lacks access to eye hospitals and eye care facilities. The visually impaired population of Bihar has limited access to proper eye care. The older population is the most vulnerable. Bihar has the highest deficit of qualified clinical professionals such as ophthalmologists and optometrists. The majority of eye hospitals are concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural populations underserved. For example, 75% of health infrastructure is in urban areas, where only 27% of the population resides. Economic constraints are a major barrier to seeking eye care in rural areas, contributing to the higher prevalence of blindness and visual impairment. Available eye care services are not affordable to the mass. Transportation infrastructure is also very poor which also contributes to patient not availing eye care services. Lower levels of awareness about eye health in the people in rural areas of Bihar contribute to delayed diagnosis and treatment.
Women in rural Bihar are at higher risk of visual impairment. Women in rural India are 1.51 times more likely to be blind compared to men. Men has better access to eye care services. Men are 2.3 times more likely to attend eye camps than women in rural areas.
Visual impairment leads to reduced productivity and increases the economic burden on families and caregivers. Visual impairment and blindness have a negative impact on livelihoods and contribute to poverty. Once an old person becomes blind due to cataract, he becomes a burden on the family that is already struggling to exist due to poverty. The person loses his/ her livelihood and stays confined within the four walls. When a child develops visual impairment, it hinders the overall growth of the child.
Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital – the IAPB-member hospital
IAPB is a 250-member organisation comprising eye hospitals, international charities, academic institutes, professional bodies and corporate organisations. Operative since 1975, IAPB has advocated the provision of affordable and all-inclusive eye care services to everyone. As an IAPB member, Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital has adopted a multi-faceted strategy including outreach camps, vision vans, vision centres, and school/ Anganwadi screenings to provide primary eye care to all. Door-to-door screenings will ensure no one is left behind, especially in remote areas. Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital aims to enhance its eye care facilities to meet its vision 2030. Akhand Jyoti aims to screen 12 million people in rural and tribal areas in India, raising awareness about eye health. Through its Nayan Suraksha Mission (NSM), Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital plans to screen and provide primary eye care to 5 million people over the next three years.
Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital is committed towards eliminating curable blindness in low-income regions by providing the low-income section of society with affordable, accessible, sustainable, quality curative and preventive eye care services. With the door-to-door eye camps in rural regions of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the hospital aims to provide primary eye care to all so that no one is left behind. The outreach team ventures into the rural hinterlands and identifies the visually impaired patients (giving preference to ones with cataracts in both eyes), bring them to the nearest Akhand Jyoti surgical centre in its own transport, operates on them and send them back to their places after the successful sight-restoring surgeries. Cataract surgeries provided to poor patients are completely free of cost. Akhand Jyoti does over 93,000 eye surgeries annually, of which 80% are completely free to the underprivileged.
Tumblr media
The school-screening team visits government run schools in villages to screen and provide primary eye care to the children free of charge. Spectacles are distributed to the visually impaired students at no cost to correct their refractive errors. Children needing surgical interventions are referred to the nearest surgical centres and provided free of cost surgeries. The hospital also engages Anganwadi workers, trains them to screen children and refer patients to the hospital needing eye care interventions.
Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital also provides high-quality paid services to patients. Revenue from these paid services is used to support the free surgeries of the patients. The hospital provides all types of speciality eye care treatments and services such as cataract surgery, corneal and retinal treatments, squint, low vision, lazy eye, oculoplasty, etc.
