The C(r)ozier Cowl (with pattern!)

I FINALLY DID IT, and I'm so incredibly pleased with how it turned out (it's also maybe the warmest scarf I've ever knit, the Terror costume design people knew what they were doing)

Details:

This infinite loop cowl is a knit recreation of the scarf/cowl worn by Captain Francis Crozier in the first season of the tv show The Terror (2018).

The choice of yarn is, in my opinion, very important to the accuracy of the result. The pattern is quite simple, so getting the right yarn makes a big impact. My suggested yarn is below.

This is knitted in seed stitch at a very tight gauge, using a worsted weight yarn on size 4 needles. This produces a gauge consistent with the scarf from the show (did I measure Jared Harris’ eye and use it to calculate gauge from a photo of Crozier wearing the scarf? MAYBE SO). It makes the knitting a little hard on the hands, but the resulting fabric is DELIGHTFUL—super dense, and since the cowl is knit as a tube it's double thick and, in my experience, nearly entirely windproof. THIS IS A VERY WARM COWL!

After looking at too many screenshots, I ultimately determined that the article in the show is in fact a scarf (you can see the edge VERY briefly in one shot). However, I have designed my version as a tube cowl, as it more easily reproduces the look of the article as worn in the show (doubled over and in a continuous loop around the neck with no edges visible). You could produce a scarf instead by knitting this flat instead of in the round—cast on the same number of stitches with a long tail cast on, and then only knit/repeat row 1 (consider adding a seldvege edge).

Materials:

3 skeins (approx. 660 yards) Cascade 220 Heathers in color 2445 Shire (google it to find purchasing options, or ask your local yarn store to order it!)

Size 4 needles; either 16 inch circulars or double-pointed

Stitch marker

Yarn needle

Instructions:

Provisional CO 72 stitches on size 4 16-inch circular (or double pointed) needles to work in the round. Place marker.

Row 1: k1 p1

Row 2: p1 k1

Repeat until cowl measures approximately 54 inches (4.5 feet; 137 cm) or desired length.

Unpick provisional cast-on, placing live stitches on any spare circular needles or dpns. Kitchener stitch ends together (tutorial for doing so in pattern here).

Wear as a single or double loop.

Now go have some glorious homoerotic tension with your second in command!

Different Italian anon, but the thing with Tuscan C is that it's pronounced like a very strong H sound, which is extra weird cuz the letter H makes no sound in Italian, normally. It sounds the way Spanish pronounce the J. We say it's "aspirato". So then people from there will say things like Hoha Hola (coca cola), and it's funny. It's also extremely contagious, I got family in Florence, you spend 3 days with them you start doing it too before you even realize.

We tend to think of "lack of self-esteem" as a character flaw that is sort of...self-victimizing, in the sense that not believing in yourself or your own agency hurts you, and is sort of annoying, but doesn't meaningfully affect other people. I think Yugi and his relationship with Atem is a very interesting counterexample we don't see in fiction all that often. Yugi's fear of being himself fuels his belief that he can simply avoid his own weaknesses and skip self-actualization by letting Atem be the Other, Better, Cooler Yugi. But being forced into this role only exacerbates Atem's suffocation and alienation, and prolongs and enables Atem's refusal to acknowledge his own distinct personhood, something he desperately needs.

Atem is using Yugi's body and identity to fill in what he lacks; Yugi is also rather unambiguously using Atem for the same purpose. Their exchange is mutual, and though it harms them both, Atem's discomfort with this situation is palpable, even through his boundless affection for Yugi himself.

thanks!!! tbh applying a filter would probably be an easier route to go if it didnt sit wrong in my like... idk creative instincts. instead i use a very time consuming method called "drawing a face over and over and over again until i kinda get how it works"

actually im gonna use this ask as an excuse to post some studies here is the process:

basically step 1 i trace a photo so i can kinda get an idea of how shit works, then i try to draw the photo using what i learned from the tracing. 1st round is always wack so step 3 is comparing my proportions to the photo again. with armand i consistently drew his face too long lmao u can see it in the corrected sketches. then i do a second round of sketches, corrections, and usually a final sketch that i use as a light/shadow study. sometimes i end up doing more sketch passes if i really cant get the hang of it.

then repeat:

the goal is proportions and consistency, so hopefully when i draw a face with different expressions and angles - even if I dont have a reference that precisely lines up - i can still end up in the ballpark of recognizability.

funnily older daniel is much easier for me to draw than younger daniel tbh. theyve got similar faces but the actor for older daniel just has more distinctive features i can center stuff around, whereas young daniel eludes me a lil bit.... i gotta do more studies of those guys if i can shake the armand fixation for like 10 minutes

Since we’re on the topic of beauty, the qijiu server had a discussion a while back about if Yue Qingyuan knows he’s hot, and it was really interesting! There’s a lot of really cool different approaches to the topic, but this is my (qijiu centric) interpretation.

I think that YQY has a tendency to objectify himself. Not in the sexual sense, but in so far as he sees his body, even his entire his self, as a thing to me measured by it’s utility. YQY’s self concept is entirely tied up in being useful, ideally to SJ, but also just to anyone who needs it and the world at large. Does YQY know he’s attractive? He does, if it’s useful.

I’m firm believer that YQY has very good social instincts (around everyone but SJ because he cares too much), and builds up a lot of diplomatic skills on Qiong Ding Peak, and being a good communicator and negotiator means knowing what cards on are in your deck, which necessitates self awareness. Yue Qingyuan has been told he’s handsome. Other people treat him like he’s handsome. The logical thing to do is to act on that information he’s been given. That does not mean he’s internalized it in any way, and it espically does not mean that YQY derives any kind of positive feeling from being seen as attractive. I don’t think YQY particularly cares if most people find him hot beyond that utility!

Now, this is firmly in headcanon territory, but I read YQY as demisexual! His lack of arguably-romantic connection with anyone besides SJ is ofc a consequence of him being a side character, but he really strikes me as a guy who loves one person as long as they’re there, and he’s ambivalent to all things romantic & sexual if he hasn’t found that person, or if he has, when it doesn’t relate to that person.

And here’s where we get to the good stuff: YQY’s attractiveness becomes a positive quality to him the moment he knows SJ likes it. Once he learns that SJ has been horny gripping over every inch of exposed nape, it is going to entitely change his relationship to his body. This is no longer a mere object, but a piece of art that Xiao Jiu cherishes. His big biteable tits and shapely ass become not neutral feature, but the things that make SJ feral. He is still an object to himself, but he is one that SJ loves, and that is very, very different.
