Thursday I made the trek to the Museum of Tolerance for a special screening for the Los Angeles Premiere of 'Paper And Glue: A JR Project’. It was my last shoot before the Thanksgiving weekend and it was very welcome for a non-stop week that had left me pretty tired. It’s a lovely building and considerably bigger than I imagined. The circular or spiral walkway in the center of the building was inspiring. We photographers were set up near the spiral with the theater to the left of us. Thankfully I was surrounded by pleasant folks so we chatted a bit before things kicked off. I’ve mentioned this before. Everything was chill and going at an easy pace, well, until Angelina Jolie showed and thing got crazy. I told Robin, the photographer to my left, when Angelina showed that this is why we’re here. I follow Angelina and I noticed a post a couple weeks back of a pyramid with public art. JR’s documentary pivots around public art and Angelina’s post was about his art. I haven’t digested it all yet but there’s a good chance we’ll all learn more about it in the coming weeks. If you go to JR’s IG page there’s a lot more details to explore. Many of you already follow him. He has 1.1 mln followers too. Angelina was there with Pax and Shiloh to support JR’s art. They were adorable. Today was my first actual ride. I’m hot now. Broke a sweat riding. I figured out the gears because they’ve changed over the years. I’ll have to work on the brakes a little. It’s harder to ride because of a year of isolation and osteoarthritis that kicked in in November but I did it with minor negative effect. Tomorrow is my birthday. I’m turning 64, woohoo! In a rare display of excess I’ve bought 2 cakes from Porto's today to celebrating my birthday tomorrow. That's a lot of cake! I’m worth it! Lol. Today is the 4th of July and I thought fried chicken would be an excellent choice with paired with coleslaw and traditional southern styled potato salad. I fried the chicken with a fajita rub to boost the flavor. Then I prepared the savory coleslaw with a crushed garlic clove in mayonnaise, salt and pepper. The potato salad is a mix of mustard and mayonnaise mixed together with chopped onions, celery and dill pickles. I mashed the potatoes by hand adding the mustard and mayonnaise first with about 1/4 cup of pickle juice. Then fold in the chopped vegetables. I leave the potato skins on for an extra nutritional boost. It’s a modified version my mom taught me as a child but still very country. Then I launched into my 4th meal celebration. I don’t usually bread my chicken. But I like to brown it to a crispy texture. I find breading get in the way of the chicken taste I prefer. Of course, it was delicious. Today I have a very unusual dinner option. My house keeper has been buying groceries for me so I don’t have to go to the store. I’m eternally grateful for her efforts. Her and her daughter have been very kind to me. I asked her pick me up a few things to help me get through. Pickles, bell peppers and other small items. When she popped to drop off the food items she asked me if I wanted a steak. I said sure. Steak is rear for me and it’d break up the eating monotony. It was in brown paper and I was okay cool. Later once I got around to putting things away I discovered this monster. It was a 3 inch think steak. I was too tired yesterday to prepare it but today I got on it because I wanted to eat it while it was fresh. What you see here is a lot like the meals I grew up on. We bought whole sides of beef because we knew people in the farming community of Blythe. It saved the family money and we had better quality food. This meal is like memory eating. The meal reminds me of my family and the nostalgia of youth. This is likely one reason I got so big. My mom was hot after high quality food but she was frugal too. I didn’t eat the whole steak BTW. 🥩 That would be crazy! Eating half of it nearly killed me. Lol. I’ll save some for tomorrow. I had three sides. I crushed fresh garlic in the coleslaw mixing it with bell peppers and mayonnaise. I don’t like sweet coleslaw, but savory. I seared the steak on both sides and pan broiled in in bacon drippings with a salt and pepper rub. It was bright pink in the middle. (So good!) I had broccoli and peas and carrots too. It was a nice change from the low budget stuff I regularly eat. I was out to the doctor this morning and on my return I dropped by Meatzilla on Main. Before I got there I discovered this charming authentic Mexican restaurant on Venice near flower that looked amazing but I digress. All of you who know me know I’m going to attracted to a place named Meatzilla. It’s a burger stand with a lot of unusual options. It’s a walk up with table and stools on the sidewalk. I had the Clint Beastwood (Angus Chuck, Monterey jack cheese, applewood bacon, onion rings, tomato, and honey bbq sauce), the garlic fries (which were served hot and crispy) and a coke. My New Year’s Day meal circles both tradition and comfort. I roasted the Cornish Game Hen with the baby potatoes in my cast iron enameled Dutch oven. I boiled the corn on the cob and cooked up black eyed peas with bacon drippings, salt and pepper. Today was a day of home styled comfort food starting with sausage gravy and biscuits with a Mexican chocolate mocha latte. It was such a delicious day of feasting. On a lark i made crab lag tacos today. It was about an hour of effort. My crab leg tacos were garnished with chopped green onions, diced tomatoes, thinly sliced purple cabbage, chopped cilantro, crema on a yellow corn tortillas. I made it last week with six tacos. I can’t eat 6 tacos in one setting so I cut back. The digs in Hollywood that Robyn invited me to to spend the weekend. I was surprised that something this nice would be so close to Hollywood and Highland. Only a block and a half away. It was a vaca for me from DTLA. The place was warm comfy and stylish. This is truly Extravagant Behavior. We both loved are bed and slept like stones.
