SONNEBERG, GERMANY—First, in true German fashion, the rules were outlined: no alcohol on site, flagpoles capped at three meters, no protesting past 8 p.m. The demonstration followed, with hundreds congregated in the town square shouting insults at the incumbent government; cracking jokes at the expense of refugees, the LGBTQ+ community, and the media; and waving a sea of German flags, with a few Russian ones dotted among them.
“Anyone who dares call us Nazis will be reported to the police,” one of the protesters shouted from a makeshift stage propped up outside Sonneberg’s City Hall, a white mansion built between the world wars. “Germany first,” the protester continued, beckoning the crowds to join in singing the national anthem under a rainy, dark sky.
At 8 p.m. sharp, the crowd quickly dispersed—but they’ll be back next Monday, as they are every week. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they rallied against lockdowns. Now, they call for the overthrow of the current government coalition, and in recent months, the numbers of agitators have started to swell. Many are affiliated with the right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD), and although members say they strongly reject what Nazi Germany stood for, a regional chair of the party, Björn Höcke, is on trial for concluding a 2021 speech with the phrase “Everything for Germany”—a slogan widely used by the Nazis. (Under German law, the use of speech, propaganda, and symbolism associated with the Nazi Party and other terrorist groups is prohibited.)
Sonneberg district, home to 56,000 people, is where AfD has celebrated its biggest success to date: Last year, Robert Sesselmann, 51, was elected as the district administrator in a runoff with 52.8 percent of the vote, making Sonneberg the first county in Germany to elect a far-right candidate since the Nazi era. But Thuringia’s AfD branch—where Sonneberg is located—has already been questioning the legitimacy of state institutions and asserted that the Federal Republic of Germany is not a sovereign state, but rather controlled by external powers.
The Thuringia branch of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution has legally classified the AfD’s Thuringia branch as “right-wing extremist,” and the federal office is now deciding whether the party may be classified as a suspected case of right-wing extremism on the national level.
The question is pertinent, since the AfD is gaining in popularity not just in Thuringia, but nationwide. This trend picked up around the time of Germany’s last federal elections in 2021. Nationally, the AfD’s support base has grown to 22 percent, compared to 10.4 percent in 2021. Three states in the east—Thuringia, as well as Brandenburg and Saxony—head to the polls this fall, and a win for the AfD looks likely, as it’s polling around 30 percent in all three states.
“This is a stress test for Germany, and 2024 is a defining year,” said Olaf Sundermeyer, an editor at the Berlin-Brandenburg Broadcast (RBB) and longtime expert on right-wing extremism in Germany. Sundermeyer said that since the AfD was founded in 2013, “the party has continuously radicalized.”
Initially starting out as a euroskeptic party that primarily criticized the European Union’s handling of the eurozone crisis, the party—and its leadership—have continuously shifted toward more nationalist and populist positions, especially since 2015, when former Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed around 1 million refugees into the country.
The legacy and shame of Nazi Germany continue to influence the nation’s politics, and until the AfD’s rise, German society strongly rejected far-right ideologies. But the economic impact of both the 2008 financial crisis and the 2015 refugee crisis have—at least partially—resulted in shifting public perceptions.
“The AfD has successfully managed to alter people’s perception of right-wing extremism, moving it away from its historically charged stigma of Nazism and thus effectively rendering it socially acceptable,” Sundermeyer told Foreign Policy. This, he said, is exactly what has happened in Sonneberg.
The AfD’s new heartland, a remote part of the countryside, was part of the communist German Democratic Republic until reunification in 1990. Surrounded by hills in the Thuringian Forest, Sonneberg’s cobblestone main street and stately houses date back to the Wilhelminian era before the First World War. The nearest major highway is about a half-hour’s drive.
Since reunification, scores of people have migrated westward, leaving many homes empty. Residents say that young people here struggle with drug abuse; that there are few places for them to hang out; and that public transport isn’t adequately connecting the district’s farther, remote villages, making it more difficult to access educational and job opportunities. Since reunification, the country’s east has been catching up to the former West Germany in terms of economic opportunities, but in Sonneberg—and throughout former East Germany—many people continue to feel acutely disadvantaged.
A group of young men lingering after the demonstration echoed these complaints as they chain-smoked Marlboros and packed up whistles and flags. They had opted to move into practical professions—such as construction work, plumbing, and roofing—one explained, to help “build Sonneberg, and Germany overall.”
Attending the demonstration wearing their company uniforms—grey overalls and work pants—the men were initially hesitant to speak to the Lügenpresse, or “lying, mainstream press,” as they described it. “No names please,” they asked politely after agreeing to talk. (“Lügenpresse,” a term used by the Nazis, has resurfaced in Germany’s right-wing circles, as well as among allies of former U.S. President Donald Trump.)
“People call us ‘rats,’ just because we support the AfD,” one of the men said. “There’s no freedom of speech here, no freedom of thoughts. Our country gets involved in wars we don’t want to be part of. The government manipulates the press, our German culture, and our traditions are vanishing due to mass immigration—food and energy prices have skyrocketed. It’s worse than during the German Democratic Republic, and we desperately need change—we need an alternative.” He paused to take a long drag on his cigarette, then added: “Germany is for Germans first—we can’t help others if we’re not helping ourselves.”
“It’s a possibility that the party drifts too far to the right,” he said, “and that’s certainly not what we want. We don’t want a return of Nazi times, but we need change.”
The party’s policy platform is unabashedly far right. For instance, AfD’s stance on immigration is that “the ideology of multiculturalism is a serious threat to peace and to the continued existence of the nation as a cultural unit.” The party advocates for a “German dominant culture” based on the values of Christianity instead of multiculturalism. Africa, the party’s website states, is a “house of poverty,” arguing that migration from the continent needs to be capped.
During a covert meeting last November, uncovered by independent German investigative outlet Correctiv, AfD politicians, together with neo-Nazis and several wealthy business owners, discussed the “remigration” of millions of people—including German citizen—on the basis of racial and religious criteria.
The group of young men in Sonneberg who spoke with Foreign Policy talked about the need for the “remigration” of immigrants, too, and some even had written it on signs. After the rally, though, they headed to dinner at the only restaurant still open: a kebab house owned by an Iraqi Kurd. Their waiter was a Syrian man who arrived in Germany three years ago.
According to the Federal Statistical Office, at least 28.7 percent of Germany’s population—more than 1 in 4 people—have a migration background, meaning that they immigrated to Germany themselves or were born into families with a history of migration. Migration is on the up, with 2.1 million people arriving in Germany in 2015, and 2.6 million in 2022. Germany’s coalition government has said it aims to attract 400,000 qualified workers from abroad annually to tackle labor shortages and demographic imbalances.
The desire for strong leadership is also on the rise in Germany as Russia’s war in Ukraine continues. Several of the AfD’s members have called for a separation from NATO and even the EU; many have turned to Russia, at least rhetorically, arguing that Germany needs to work with its neighbors. Sundermeyer told Foreign Policy that “the AfD is deeply anti-American but pro- Russian; anti-NATO and -EU, but in favor of turning toward alternative government structures such as authoritarianism.”
Meanwhile, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser continuously calls right-wing extremism the “greatest extremist threat to Germany’s democracy.”
Still, for all the Sonneberg residents who voted for the AfD’s candidate, Sesselmann—who did not respond to interview requests by Foreign Policy—there are almost as many people who did not. And unless it’s during the weekly Monday demonstrations, people don’t usually flaunt their political opinions. The day after the weekly protest, at a food stall selling bratwursts during the lunch hour, conversations revolved around work, the weather, increased food and energy prices, and even Germany’s reunification—“before it, everything was better,” several people agreed.
“In Sonneberg, many voted AfD out of spite, while others don’t take an interest in politics but cast their votes for the AfD regardless,” said Regina Müller, a 61-year-old Green Party voter who owns an organic store decorated with anti-war slogans.
But, she added, “what many here don’t see is that [the AfD] are wolves in sheep’s clothing.”

Newspaper Helsingin Sanomat covered a propaganda exhibition seen near the Finnish Embassy in Moscow.
The street exhibition dubbed "The Stages of Finnish Russophobia" by the Russian Military Historical Society, appeared opposite the Finnish Embassy in Moscow on Thursday, consisting of six billboard-style panels with text and images. However, a separate, larger exhibition with 16 panels also appeared roughly a kilometre away on Gogolevsky Boulevard.
The society's exhibition aims to show how Finland, having joined Nato and "turned its back on Russia", has actually been "anti-Russian" throughout history.
HS wrote that in Russia, it is still often difficult to understand, at least for ordinary citizens why Finland, which was widely considered neutral by the Russians, suddenly joined Nato and broke off decades of relations with Moscow.
The historical society said it located the exhibit opposite the Finnish Embassy because it is the sole remaining Finnish mission in Russia.
The street display attempts to illustrate Finland's history of Russophobia.
For example, pointing to the time in history when Finland was under Russian rule, the exhibit characterises the Nordic country as ungrateful.
Another panel highlights Finland's aspirations of a Greater Finland in the 1920s and 1930s, showing a map of Finnish nationalists' ambitions to annex land across wide swaths of Russian territory.
Other aspects of the propaganda exhibit detailed Finland's military actions in World War II against the Soviet Union and Finnish tourists drinking cheaply "at the expense of the Soviet Union" in the 1970s and 1980s. The exhibit ends with a panel showing Nato's new borders with Russia, along with military bases and tales of Finns fighting in Ukraine.
While most people walking past the exhibit did not want to speak to the Finnish newspaper reporter, one person said that the exhibit was a simple lashing out at Finland and Sweden because they joined Nato.
However, another passerby said: "Finland is part of Russia. Finns cannot live apart from Russia".
A circle of stars on a field of blue
Ahead of the upcoming EU Parliamentary elections, rural-focused newspaper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus, asked why the European Union flag is rarely seen.
When the flag is visible in Finland, it is often at press conferences or ports of entry, while it is seen more often in other EU countries.
Janne Juujärvi, an interior ministry senior specialist, pointed out that the use of the flag differs.
"Finland has a very strong culture of flagging with the Finnish flag, and the European flag is used, for example, alongside the Finnish one at border crossing points on the EU's external borders and at international airports and ports," explained Juujärvi.
"As a rule, the Finnish flag is only flown on official flag days. Then again, there are countries in Europe where, for example, flags are flown all the time outside office buildings," Juujärvi said.
MT explained there is also a logistical factor behind the issue — there's a lack of flagpoles.
If people in the Nordic country were to fly the EU flag as often as they hoist Finnish ones, they would need a second flag pole — which is not common in Finland.
Midsummer forecasts
Tabloid Iltalehti reported that Midsummer in Finland could be warm this year, according to the monthly forecast of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
As Midsummer is still three weeks away, the forecast is still unclear, but it looks like it'll be warmer than average across Finland over the long holiday weekend.
According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) long-term forecast, the average high temperature for Midsummer will be around 20 degrees Celsius in the south and 14-16 degrees in the north. In the south, nighttime temperatures are forecast to be around 10 degrees and 4-6 degrees in the north.
After a few weeks of little precipitation, rainfall is expected to be above average in the weeks leading up to Midsummer, according to the paper.

Flagpole and Flagpole Accessories for Veterans: A Tribute to Service
When it comes to honouring the service of veterans, few symbols resonate as strongly as the flag and the flagpole it flies upon. A flagpole is not just a structure; it is a testament to the dedication, sacrifice, and commitment of those who have served their country. For Australians, flagpoles are a prominent feature in memorials, events, and personal tributes to veterans. Whether it's for Anzac Day, Remembrance Day, or a private ceremony, the right flagpole and accessories can make a significant difference in paying homage to our heroes.
This comprehensive guide explores the world of Flagpoles Australia, discussing their importance, the best options for veterans, and the accessories that complete the setup.
Why Flagpoles Are Significant for Veterans
Flagpoles serve as a powerful medium to display national pride and honour veterans. For many, raising the flag is a deeply symbolic act that represents respect, unity, and gratitude. From community events to personal displays, flagpoles offer Australians a way to keep the legacy of their veterans alive.
National Pride: Displaying the Australian flag on a high-quality flagpole demonstrates respect for the nation's history and its veterans.
Commemoration: Events such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day heavily feature flagpoles as central elements.
Personal Tributes: Many families of veterans choose to install flagpoles at home to honour their loved ones.
Types of Flagpoles Australia Offers for Veterans
Flagpoles come in various designs, materials, and sizes, making it easy to find one suitable for your needs. Here are some of the most popular options available in Australia:
1. Wall-Mounted Flagpoles
Wall-mounted flagpoles are ideal for residential and commercial properties. These poles are affixed to walls, providing a space-saving way to display flags. They are particularly popular among families wishing to honour a veteran at home.
2. Freestanding Flagpoles
Freestanding flagpoles are commonly found in public spaces and outdoor events. Their tall and sturdy design ensures that flags can be seen from afar, making them perfect for ceremonies and memorials.
3. Portable Flagpoles
For events or gatherings, portable flagpoles offer convenience and versatility. Lightweight yet durable, they are easy to transport and set up, ensuring veterans are honoured wherever the event takes place.
4. Telescopic Flagpoles
Telescopic flagpoles are adjustable and user-friendly. These poles are excellent for veterans’ events, allowing easy height adjustments and quick assembly.
Key Materials for Flagpoles
The material of your flagpole determines its durability, aesthetics, and maintenance requirements. In Australia, common materials include:
Aluminium: Lightweight and corrosion-resistant, aluminium flagpoles are perfect for Australia's varying climate.
Fibreglass: Fibreglass flagpoles are strong, flexible, and ideal for windy areas.
Steel: For a classic and robust appearance, steel flagpoles are a popular choice, especially for permanent installations.
Accessories to Enhance Flagpole Use
Accessories play a crucial role in the functionality and appearance of flagpoles. When honouring veterans, attention to detail is essential, and the right accessories ensure your flagpole setup is complete.
1. Flagpole Finials
Finials are decorative tops for flagpoles, often in shapes such as spheres or eagles. They add an elegant touch and are especially meaningful in veterans’ displays.
2. Halyard Systems
The halyard system is used to raise and lower flags. Choose between internal and external systems based on security needs and ease of use.
3. Flag Clips and Snap Hooks
These accessories secure the flag to the halyard. High-quality, durable options are vital for ensuring the flag remains in place during windy conditions.
4. Ground Sleeves and Bases
A sturdy foundation is critical for any flagpole. Ground sleeves and bases provide stability and support, especially for freestanding and portable poles.
5. Illumination
Adding a light to your flagpole allows you to display the flag at night, maintaining its prominence and visibility during evening hours.
How to Choose the Right Flagpole for Veterans
Selecting the right flagpole involves considering various factors, including location, purpose, and budget. Here are some tips to guide you:
Consider the Location: For outdoor installations, choose weather-resistant materials like aluminium or fibreglass.
Determine the Purpose: Events may require portable flagpoles, while permanent installations are better suited for freestanding models.
Account for the Climate: Australia's diverse weather conditions mean that durability is key. Invest in corrosion-resistant materials for long-term use.
Opt for Accessories: Ensure your setup is complete with high-quality accessories such as halyards, finials, and lighting.
Maintaining Your Flagpole
To keep your flagpole in pristine condition, regular maintenance is essential. Here are some maintenance tips:
Clean the Pole: Use mild soap and water to clean the flagpole periodically, removing dirt and grime.
Inspect Accessories: Check halyards, clips, and other accessories for wear and replace them as needed.
Lubricate Moving Parts: For smooth operation, lubricate the halyard system and other moving components.
Secure the Flag: Ensure the flag is securely attached and in good condition, replacing it if it becomes torn or faded.

Indigenous Boat / Ship Research (Inspiration):
Indigenous people of Australia have a long and rich history of making watercraft that are specific to their location and culture, from canoes to rafts. In their daily life, watercraft were essential for trade, hunting, fishing, and transportation (News, n.d.). The materials that were accessible in various parts of Australia and the particular requirements of the local communities influenced the design and construction of these boats. Three Indigenous boat and ship types, the Motu trading ship, bark canoes, and raft.
1. Motu Trading Ships
The Motu people of Papua New Guinea utilized big, double-hulled ships called Motu trading ships to trade with Indigenous groups in northern Australia. For long-distance trade, especially in the Hiri trade, where clay pots were traded for sago (edible starch), these ships were stable and capable of transporting heavy loads. These ships, which had pandanus leaf sails and were constructed of wood and vines, were essential for cross-cultural and cross-commercial interactions (Guild, 2022).
2. Bark Canoes
Large sheets of eucalyptus bark were used to make bark canoes, which were abundant in rivers and lakes. They were utilized for hunting, fishing, and transportation in placid inland waters since they were lightweight and manageable. It took extensive knowledge of tree species and weather to build a bark canoe, and these skills were frequently handed down through the generations as cultural knowledge (Wheeler, 2019).
3. Rafts
Simpler, flat boats called rafts were constructed from wood or reeds that were bound together with vines. They were used for fishing, hunting marine life, such as turtles, and short-distance island-to-island transit in coastal and island regions. Rafts were necessary for quick excursions on calm seas since they were simpler to construct than canoes. (Geoff Cate, 2013).
In addition to their utilitarian use, these boats were essential to the preservation of Indigenous groups' spiritual practices, trade, and cultural linkages throughout Australia. The fact that they were constructed from locally available natural materials reflects the deep ties that Indigenous peoples have to sustainability and the natural world.
Creation Process:
The first step in creating my spatial artwork was to sketch out the concept, which combined elements from various traditional boats and ships to form a unique, boat-like structure made entirely of bamboo and bound with natural string. Once the concept was clear, I began by cutting ten pieces of bamboo, each 40 cm long, to form the basic framework of the boat. To ensure structural stability, I researched traditional knot-tying techniques commonly used in raft construction, focusing on strong and dependable knots. Using these methods, I tied the bamboo pieces together securely, creating a solid and sturdy base for the structure.
I then used bamboo's flexibility and malleability to progressively mold the framework into a boat-like shape. I was able to construct the boat's front by meticulously rearranging and perfecting the shape, stacking bamboo pieces to create the boat's head. This process allowed me to capture both the organic flow of the material and the symbolic nature of the boat.
My main goal when making the complete sculpture was to mold the framework without the use of glue or adhesives. Rather, I tied the bamboo pieces together using only natural twine. I concentrated on making advantage of bamboo's natural strength and elasticity to ensure that the parts fit together perfectly. Without the need for external fasteners, I was able to build the boat's structure since bamboo naturally bonds nicely when adjusted appropriately.
I also made a bamboo flagpole to complete the design. I inserted it through a hole in the boat's base to give the sculpture a stable, balanced appearance. This strengthens the sense of trips across the ocean by adding another level of significance. I'm rather pleased with how this approach adhered to the project's ecological principles and the materials.

5 Errors To Avoid When Trying To Increase Your Home’s Value
Many homeowners eagerly jump into renovations and upgrades to elevate their properties' value, expecting significant returns on their investments. However, these efforts can sometimes backfire and lead to disappointing results. Review these five errors to avoid when trying to increase your home’s value to prevent yourself from falling into these pitfalls.
Ignoring Opportunities for Curb Appeal
One error is to avoid overlooking your home's external appearance, which can influence homebuyers’ perception of the entire property. Look into ways to enhance your curb appeal, such as installing a flagpole on your lawn. You can learn how to choose the best spot for your flagpole to ensure it makes a positive impression on buyers. This is just one example, though. You could also consider adding plants to your yard, decorating your front door, and more.
Retrofitting Your Garage
While converting your garage into additional living space might be tempting, this decision can alienate potential buyers who prioritize storage or a secure place for their vehicles. Such a conversion doesn’t just reduce the space's functionality for many. It might also not comply with local building codes, causing more headaches down the line.
Completing Home Repairs Improperly
Another error to avoid when trying to increase your home’s value is completing repairs improperly. Although going the DIY route can seem like a cost-effective way to enhance your home, you should only do it if you have the necessary skills and expertise.
Attempting complex renovations or repairs without either of these can lead to shoddy work that appraisers and potential buyers will easily spot. Worse yet, it could cause long-term damage, reducing your property’s value instead of increasing it.
Not Taking Advantage of Green Upgrades
For many, a sustainable home is a valuable asset. Ignoring the opportunity to incorporate energy-efficient features into your home is a missed chance to attract a growing demographic of environmentally conscious buyers. Upgrades like solar panels, energy-efficient windows, and a smart thermostat can make your property more appealing and valuable.
Decorating Your Home Based on Your Taste
When you’re looking to sell, remember that potential buyers need to envision themselves in your space. Highly personalized décor or unconventional paint choices can make this difficult, limiting your property's appeal. Opting for neutral colors and more universally appealing decorations can make your home more attractive to a broader audience.
It’s understandable why you want to increase your property value, so pursue this goal with caution and wisdom. Avoiding these common mistakes can prevent lots of stress and earn you a much more substantial return on your investment.

okay so literally all of these are real examples I experienced (though they are from two different schools):
hsa = the high school i attended in the late 2000s/early 2010s
hsb = the high school i worked at in the late 2010s/early 2020s
both were in red areas in blue states
official school events held at a church: hsa used the church next door for ap testing and sat/act testing. hsb did staff professional development at the church all the administrators attended, and also hosted a clothing drive there.
a church held events at the school: hsb was used on the weekends as a church, and sometimes the church left literature behind in my friend's classroom.
a church sponsored/organized school activities: this one still makes me so unbelievably mad. a teacher/coworker at hsb partnered with their church and a missionary organization that packed meals for missionaries to hand out. the event was hosted on school property during school hours and students were allowed to skip class to volunteer to pack meals.
the school authorized/supported student groups for religious students: hsa had a christian athlete group and they prayed around the flagpole in front of the school every week
the school authorized/supported student groups centered on religious practice: hsb had a student bible study group sponsored by a teacher
an external religious organization lobbied for a book ban at my school: mormon parents lobbied hsa to ban grendel (because it mentioned a vagina). they were unsuccessful so all the mormon kids read frankenstein instead. and not a religious organization but hsb did have a book get banned because of one single solitary angry parent. the book was persepolis and dozens of copies sat gathering dust for years until the teachers gave up and donated them to a school in another district that was allowed to have them.
*student groups for religious students in this context means an organization/club/group specifically built to provide community for students of a certain religion. as an example, a club that specifically for christian athletes.
**student groups centered on religious practice in this context means an organization/group/club that is not only built for students of a certain religion, but includes religious instruction or activities. as an example, a bible study club or prayer club.
***looking for lobbying/attempted book bans here, regardless of success or not. these could be bans on books in curriculum, or removal of books from school or classroom libraries.
bonus points if you want to tell me in the tags if you're in a more red or more blue state, and what decade this happened in

feathers.
I think I lose parts of myself like a bird loses feathers.
It sounds stupid, doesn’t it? Like some ninth grader’s attempt at a deep metaphor on a paper that their English teacher gave them an eighty-five for. A passing grade for a shitty revelation that they thought was brilliant.
But I mean it.
You look at the bottom of a bird’s cage, and there’s discarded feathers, lying still after being shed. Well- they wouldn’t be moving, I suppose. Maybe that was stupid too.
But I feel like that too.
Because what if with each crack in our heart, we lose a feather?
I think that one feather maybe lies hidden between the rubble of my childhood bedroom, built in twelve years and torn apart in two minutes.
Another one is frozen where my knees hit the ground, tears on the sidewalk and fragments of my heart in the grass.
Another one sits at the empty flagpole, next to a nonexistent apology.
Three more decorate the right side of my bed.
I think that a thousand dropped off, one by one, onto the bathroom floor, sticking to the bile on my fingertips, an unending ache in my chest as I stared at everything and nothing and all the stuff in between.
My feathers lie across my entire world, expertly threaded through time and space in all the nooks and crannies of grief, in anger and depression.
It’s cheesy, and it’s depressing, but God, it’s so, painfully, true. Isn’t it?
We say that emotional pain hurts the heart, that trauma corrupts the brain, and sure- to put it like that, it’s an internal thing, right? But it bleeds out into external pain, and soon begs for the validation we crave, if only someone will tell us that yes, our hearts hurt and our brains cry for everything we’ve been through, but it becomes something more.
You could take it literally. I do that sometimes too. The emotional pain turns into real pain when any attempt at a coping mechanism inevitably falters and I turn to ruining my life with bad habits that I tell myself aren’t that big of a deal, when really, I know that they are.
But maybe it’s not entirely literal.
Maybe the emotional pain isn’t just emotional.
Maybe heartbreak feels like a plucked feather.

Header | Reflection of some of my favorite peers’ prompts under the cut!
@aethernoise -- #11: Ultracrepidarian
tired curses!!!! i also really love this contrast in their work..... its rly cute. alyx just saved the world and aymeric is hating the dictionary. i like how rough his narration is and then alyx calls and everything speeds up, and i especially love him staring into the empty room. it put another contrast between their circumstances, but its also rly damn accurate abt how it feels to share a moment over the phone w someone. it made me smile a lot
@ahlis-xiv -- #23: Shuffle
this one made me laugh ksjdf ahlis’ distaste for the saucer despite being drawn to it is hysterical, but it also mirrors a lot of her character flaws: avoiding vulnerability, placing stoicism before genuineness, planting her frustration on external things instead of herself. even confronting her own feelings draws some curses out of her, and i love that display of her personality.
@autochthonousone -- #09: Nonagenarian
i love me some reflection and mentorship. also im obsessed with “let ‘lone this ‘n”.........dialect is such a hit or miss thing when writing or reading, but god youve got it and i love that line so much. barry’s relationship w stalwart is even better tho, and i cant repeat enough how much i love their dynamic of fair/stern/wise and distant/brutish/actually-paying-complete attention.
@brave-horizon -- #12: Tooth & Nail
talk abt using the setting..............i rly struggle w incorporating setting so this was a little mind-blowing to me. we got a really cool action scene plus established an entire town and conflict all at once?? battle scenes are hard. but ur vocab is so precise and stuff like “seized midstride” and “spilling its pilot” are rly inspiring me rn!! wind magic is smth ive brainstormed in the past but u have such good ideas w it and im so pumped just rereading it. its so good
@erstwhile25 -- #05: Matter of Fact
oh my god. some kind of dialogue god comes down and hands kail all his words, or else he’s just the dialogue god himself. im leaning towards the latter. i wish to god i could say “very small dogs with the barest streaks of sanity” in daily life, and honestly i might start to. the crew of the rook are always a joy to see + the development of their conversation takes such a meaningful turn that it really sticks after the laughs
@endangered-liaison -- #05: Matter of Fact
sorry not sorry jaejh is cool!!!! he’s super nasty and terrible and interesting and i loved his voice, but i esp love how well he pushed the conflict and just Ruined Everything. i rly live how his influence bleeds into the others through their fear. The kids go from hoping or expecting to smth better, to not even debating that he’s lying bc it will just turn out worse. the berry stains as a gun on the wall never struck me either, and i was SHOOK
@high-and-away -- #10: Avail
honestly this was the hardest one to pic a fav for. i rly loved so many of these bc they check a lot of boxes for my Brand. this one sits the longest with active conflict + does a fantastic job staying clear despite all the trails it picks up w max’s foil n comradeship, the chocobo’s higher level of pity over people, the chaotic pack of Resistance members, and the highlander that vicky reasons over n kills. i love that word “limning” now; ur vocab always finds ways to surprise me w the way u use them (esp in describing settings)
@holyja -- #03: Muster
usually when i think of lizzy writing, i think of how perfect ur verbs are, but this time i really liked the visuals and tone. hyana pushing food around her plate and sitting on the rooftops had such a lonely feel to them, but at the same time were rly enjoyable and clear imgs despite not having to be described forever. serella’s dialogue was perfectly on-the-nose, too. usually i rly linger on what is given too much detail, but this rly showed me how nice it is to air things out n leave the thought monologue unsaid.
@karoiseka -- #24: Beam
hell yeah memory lane time. i loved seeing CT from karo’s pov and seeing where her priorities lay or moved. i also liked the life u gave to the little parts left untouched by the narrative, like walking through CT and the heartbeat in the soul vessel. idk what could be more satisfying that a reunion either, so following karo into the ocular was some Good Shit
@mythrilreflections -- #15: Ache
does this get bonus points just for being in o’ghomoro? yes. i love how the tunnels are characterized by the senseless kobolds in them. the added pressure from their reasonings for being in this hellhole is even better, and i love the sigils concept. jace’s narration is so cold, too, which makes both the kobold’s ferocity and the team’s desperation more poignant: he doesn’t sound the type to exaggerate.
@norhimorovine -- #14: Part
this one just screams fairy tale to me. the others do too, but the repetition of events rly knocks this one up the flagpole of ‘belongs in some mid 19th century kids story collection.’ i LOVE the sisters’ banter, and how the younger daughter gets incorporated a bit further for her attention. having the soldier take little pieces of each environment to prove they were real made them a lot more real to me, too.
@snowbird-down -- #03 Muster
if u think im NOT gonna lose my mind shrieking over stream of consciousness as one of the #1 ways of writing trauma, u have not been around me for very long. the varying sentence length is rly successful here, and i esp love the part where people are rushing into the ship and she has to stab a dude to keep him from coming aboard. it’s such a back and forth determining who is humanity and who is the faceless antagonist for a minute, n ofc i love that.
@stars-bleed-hearts-shine -- #28 -- Irenic
i was p surprised that my fav of urs came so late, but i feel like this piece has a lot of what your really good at, and which i admire a lot: you aren’t afraid of emotional dialogue or arguments based in more than factual debate, and you capitalize on casual thoughts that reveal a lot more than they do at face value. i esp like that you rly make the most of two characters that overlap in values and personality so often--they acknowledge that overlap and work together with what they share.
@yunkinko -- #05 Matter of Fact
im gonna forget abt that little rat line bc the last line is a kick in the teeth. i always admire ur ability to expand tiny details into lasting events. x’arhll’s musings also cut so different from the rest of the scene, separating her from the others and mhifa even further from her, so i love that contrast. the “arc of water” stayed with me for a while too.
#IM SORRY IF I DIDNT GET TO EVERYONE#i got a lotta exhausted after this#n i love rereading and catching up on things sm#ty sm for sharing ur writing everyone!!#n grats to everyone who wrote smth#i think my fav of mine is lush!#i like a lot of the War Feelings i got to do w nol tho#i wrote i lot less this year than last year#bc work and 2020#so im a little :/// abt that#since last year i did a lot of good work that i like to reread#brianna babbles#ffxivwrite2020

1. What is your favorite thing about winter? What about your least favorite thing? >> My favourite thing is just learning about what it does ecologically, and the whole mythic concept of plant life dying only to be resurrected in Spring. My least favourite thing is the lack of Sun. 2. What did you used to do as a kid the night before in order to prepare for a possible snow day off from school? >> I don’t recall ever caring about snow days. I really didn’t care about much external stuff at that age, honestly. 3. If you ever gave birth to a baby girl in December, would you be more likely to name them Holly, Carol, or Noelle? >> --- 4. How tall was the biggest snowman that you’ve ever built before? >> I never learned how to build a snowman. 5. Do you actually find the snowfall to be pretty before it turns all dirty, gray, and slushy? >> Yeah, for that very short window of time.
6. What’s the largest sized hail that you’ve personally seen fall before? >> Not very large. Maybe marble-sized. 7. What would you bring with you if you had to spend the night in an igloo? >> I don’t know anything about igloo habitation so I’d have to find out what’s best to bring. 8. Have you ever met an Inuit person before? In what ways does their life differ from yours? >> I doubt it. I’d imagine an Inuit person’s daily life would differ pretty predictably from mine, just from living in a different area of the world, in a different climate, with a different ecology and all. 9. Did you know that no two snowflakes are alike? What is it that makes you special/unique and unlike anyone else you know? >> From what I understand, that’s an oversimplification. Patterns like that end up repeating eventually, of course; but this one dude who was really into taking close-up photos of snowflakes kind of popularised the idea that none of them are alike because he just... didn’t take multiple photos of the same designs. He wanted to emphasise the variance but we kinda ran with it, lol. Anyway, I don’t know, man. Thinking about what makes me different from people doesn’t really give me, a person plagued with chronic alienation feelings, much pleasure. 10. Are you team polar bear or team penguins? >> There are teams? 11. What café or coffee shop do you typically buy your warm seasonal beverages from? >> I just make them at home. 12. Are you the type of person who enjoys seasonal candy novelties or are you not into those kinds of gimmicks? >> I don’t like most candy to begin with, so. 13. Favorite cold food out of: slushies, smoothies, ice cream, or popsicles? >> Smoothies, I guess. I don’t really eat any of these, though. Can I add gelato? I do like gelato. 14. What kinds of soups do you enjoy eating? Are there any other foods that you are more likely to eat when it is cold out? >> Broccoli cheddar is pretty good. So is roasted red pepper tomato. I wouldn’t pass up chicken and wild rice. Soups don’t really do anything for me, like Sparrow loves soup and I’m just apathetic about it. I’m more likely to drink tea and eat heavier meals when it’s cold out. 15. Have you ever gotten your tongue stuck to a frozen flagpole or an ice cube before? >> Nope. 16. Have you or anyone else you know suffered from frostbite before? >> I haven’t and I don’t think anyone I know has. 17. Do you have a heating system, a space heater, or a fireplace that you use in your house in order to keep warm during the winter months? >> The building has central heating. 18. During what time of the year (what months) does your part of the world experience the season of winter? >> Around November to mid-April, I’d guess. 19. Would you rather live somewhere that is warm year-round, cold year-round, or where you get an even balance of all four seasons, and why? >> I want a milder temperate climate -- hot summers, cool (but not frigid) winters. I don’t dislike winter, I just can’t deal with frigid temps and low sunlight for like 5-6 months out of the year. 20. Do you and your family watch the winter Olympics? How about the summer Olympics? >> I don’t watch either. Although I’d be more likely to watch the winter one just because of figure skating. (made by: tickle-my-pickle)

ANALYSIS of Together
Denada Permatasari. 6 November 2017.
Fig 1.0 Photograph of Osman bin Mohammad’s Together, taken at Fort Canning Park, Singapore.
I have chosen this sculpture (Fig 1.0) titled Together by Osman bin Mohammad, a sculptor from Brunei Darussalam made in 1988. This sculpture is 3 meters tall and is made of stainless steel. Together is situated in Fort Canning Park’s sculpture trail, and is a part of the ASEAN Sculpture Garden, along with other five sculptures representing the original members of ASEAN.
I think that this sculpture is the most interesting sculpture in the whole trail because I understand its meaning just by looking at it. Other sculptures may have more interesting shapes and abstract, but because I do not understand what they mean, their significance is lost to me. I also find that Together is aesthetically more pleasing than rest of the sculptures in the trail.
The six flagpoles represent the six members of ASEAN at the time, which is Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Brunei Darussalam. What makes this sculpture stand out –especially in the context of the ASEAN Garden- is this one of two sculptures in the ASEAN collection representing six figures. The rest of the sculptures (Fig 1.1) have five figures as symbolism for the ASEAN members (Singapore’s Balance is a sculpture divided into five parts; Philippines’ Fredesvinda has five pairs of ribs; Indonesia’s Unity has five vertical sticks jutting out and five crisscrossing “pinheads” in its center; Thailand’s Concentration which is made up of five separate steel plates together; with the exception of Malaysia’s Augury which has six points going up). I found that this exception is due to Together being made last, as originally, Brunei Darussalam was not a member of ASEAN when the collection was made. The sculptures were made for the first ASEAN Sculptures Symposium held in May 1981. This symposium was hosted by Singapore.
Fig 1.1 The rest of the sculptures in the ASEAN Sculpture Garden. From left to right: Singapore’s Balance, Thailand’s Concentration, Malaysia’s Augury, Indonesia’s Unity, and The Philippines’ Fredesvinda (courtesy of the National Parks Singapore).
It is known that Singapore was improving its infrastructure rapidly during the 60s and 70s, proven from “its massive planting of instant trees in places of high visibility” (Gwee 17). In fact, the genius lies in the background of the ASEAN symposium:
Sculptures were introduced to improve the quality of the landscape by creating interesting landmarks in parks. The ASEAN Sculpture Corner was created at Fort Canning Park, as part of the ASEAN Sculptures Symposium in 1981, to ASEAN unity and cooperation. Sculptures were donated by each member country and installed at the Park (Gwee 18).
From that excerpt, I can say that Together was not just a diplomatic, political show of cooperation from Brunei, but instead, it is that and a genuine attempt to beautify Singapore.
The meaning of this artwork is also apparent through its looks. From Together’s aspects of form, it is easily the most understandable sculpture in the entire bunch. The sculpture just shows six flagpoles with five flags connecting them. Together resonates closest to the theme of the camaraderie of ASEAN members. Flags are widely regarded as nationalistic symbols, high and prideful, broadcasting a country’s presence and identity (Artic).
Fig 1.2 Zoom in shot of Together, showing the connected flags clearer. Taken from a low angle.
The way the flags themselves are arranged also has meaning behind it, for the flags in Together are connected on one flagpole to another. The artist could have made conventional flag displays, each separate from the other, but this conscious design choice is actually the main reason why this sculpture is rightly titled Together. Through the connected flags, they make the relationships between the poles, or the countries, interconnected and interdependent on one another. The connecting design makes six separate pieces –countries– into one, stronger, wholesome unit.
Even the shape and the curvature of the “flags” carry meaning. The wavy, dynamic form of the flags (Fig 1.2), as if blown by strong wind yet still anchored firmly unto their poles, speaks of the artist’s vision for the ASEAN members. The wind here is a metaphor for difficulty and challenges that a country faces, as echoed by the concerns of Narciso Ramos, the Philippines Secretary of Foreign Affairs at the time, that:
“’The fragmented economies of Southeast Asia,’ [Ramos] said, ‘[with] each country pursuing its own limited objectives and dissipating its meager resources in the overlapping or even conflicting endeavors of sister states carry the seeds of weakness in their incapacity for growth and their self-perpetuating dependence on the advanced, industrial nations’” (ASEAN).
The fluid, almost water-like curves of the flags can also act as a metaphor for the ASEAN members’ flexibility and potential for the future.
The number of flags, five, in comparison with the number of flagpoles, six, is also another point of intrigue. Why did the artist deliberately left out one pole without a flag? At this point of the essay, I must admit to the very limited number of accessible analysis of this artwork, therefore I resort to making my own assertions. I would guess that it was to make the sculpture have an opening gap. If there were six connected flags, the sculpture would be a closed circle. In turn, this could mean that Osman wanted to convey the openness of the ASEAN countries, in particular, their openness to cooperation and change for the better.
Figure 1.3 A simplified diagram of Together, from a bird's eye perspective. Note that this diagram is not up to scale.
Through my own observation, I have noted that the placement of the flagpoles is also curious, and worthy of further analysis. I have made a diagram (Fig 1.3) to illustrate more clearly how the artwork is arranged. The black-outlined circles are the flagpoles. The blue wavy lines are the connected flags. The yellow box on the side is the artwork’s information. The red circle is the viewer, along with the direction of sight that the viewer will naturally have if they should see the artwork. This is to affirm the orientation of the sculpture.
For one, the arrangement is not perfectly symmetrical. Though there is a recognizable formation, I think the imperfect placement is deliberate, though the meaning of this is not very obvious. I choose to interpret it as that Osman acknowledges the countries, and especially ASEAN itself since at the time, ASEAN was still in its infancy. The sculptor realizes that they are not perfect and that there is room for improvement. However, the main highlight of the arrangement is the middle pole in the outer three that juts out from the rest.
This flagpole stands nearest to the viewer, as if a leader or a commander of the group. This could be taken as placing one of the countries as the leader, or in this context, the host, which is Singapore. Or, it could also mean that the flagpole in question is a newcomer, not yet fully aligned with the others. If it is the latter case, then the metaphor shifts from Singapore to it being Brunei, as Brunei Darussalam was the newest addition back at the time. If this is so, then this speaks of the sculptor’s awareness of the status of his country and chose to acknowledge it.
Stainless steel as a material is also a point for discussion. Stainless steel are known for its long-lasting properties, resistance to rust, and durability (BS Stainless). I feel that this gives the meaning that through this sculpture, the six ASEAN members are portrayed as strong, enduring countries.
Last, but I think that this is critical to analyze, is the location of the sculpture itself, which is at Fort Canning Park. It occurred to me that out of all the public parks in Singapore, why Fort Canning? Why were the results of the ASEAN Sculptures Symposium placed in Fort Canning Park? Is there something particular about Fort Canning Park, or was it just one of the many parks in a checklist?
I found out that even the placement in Fort Canning Park was deliberate, as said by Mr. S. Dhanabalan, the Minister of Culture at the opening of the symposium:
I am happy to announce that the sculptures will be given pride of place in what will become one of Singapore’s most beautiful parks. A sculpture garden will be created to display the finished works on the site of the Central Park in the heart of historic Singapore. … We could not have asked for a more appropriate site, for it encompasses those institutions that have come to be associated with out artistic and intellectual life, namely, the National Museum, the National Library, [and] the National Theatre … (Natl. Archives).
The simple fact that Fort Canning Park used to be called Central Park during this time is already telling in of itself. Further research reveals that Fort Canning Park is one of the main historical sites in Singapore, from it being a center of power about 700 years ago, then as a military base in the mid of the 19th century, again in World War II, and finally a place of lush greenery for relaxation today (Walton). The gesture of placing the ASEAN Sculptures in the heart of the country is not lost on anyone; Singapore is proud to have international connections to other South East Asian countries through ASEAN. I believe that this is one of the rare moments where the meaning of an artwork is amplified by an external party, unbeknownst to the artist himself.
To conclude, I would like to posit my final thoughts regarding Together: I find it extremely curious that Brunei Darussalam still wanted to donate a sculpture even after seven years later the symposium was held. This persistence speaks of Brunei’s attitude with international relations and status; the country cared about contributing to a collective. The use of flags is also simple and effective, especially in consideration of the ASEAN theme.
I think that the straightforwardness of the subject matter is the sole reason why I think Together is the most interesting sculpture in the trail. Its simplicity, especially in comparison with the other ASEAN sculptures, makes it the most available and legible for viewers. Even more impressive is that Osman managed to imbue so many meaningful metaphors and symbolism to his seemingly straightforward sculpture without making it abstract like the others. Whether or not he intended to include the metaphors there through his aspects of form, as information regarding the artist is scarce, is ultimately irrelevant; I, as an outside viewer, managed to draw meaning just by looking at the sculpture, and therein lies the true genius of Together.

Kerbal Space Program 1.7: “Room to Maneuver” is now available!
Hello everyone!
A new technology has arrived to the KSC and with it, Kerbals will only get more Room to Maneuver! We’re excited to release, Kerbal Space Program 1.7: Room to Maneuver, our newest content-filled update that will give players new features and wide variety of improvements to help Kerbals explore farther than ever before!
This update includes two new useful navigation upgrades, the revamp of all of the small maneuvering motors, including new variants for the Twitch, Ant and Spider, as well as a brand new galaxy texture map to have our astronauts mesmerized by the beauty of the celestial vault. A great deal of bug fixes have also been packed into this update, not two mention a new 3.75 meter nose cone and a 5m one for those extra-large fuel tanks in the Making History Expansion!
Let’s go through some of this update’s highlights:
Maneuver Mode
Probably the most impactful feature within this update, the Maneuver Mode is a new navigation tool that gives you access to useful orbital information in both Flight and Map mode that will also allow you to precisely and easily adjust maneuvers nodes, all to help you fine tune your interplanetary transfers.
youtube
Altimeter mode toggle
A long-requested quality-of-life feature that will allow you to toggle the altitude mode from Above Sea Level (ASL) to Above Ground Level (AGL) by simply clicking on the new icon to the altimeter. Hopefully this will improve the KSC’s survival rates…
Part revamps
This time around, small maneuvering engines were the focus of our revamping efforts. The Ant, Twitch, Puff, Place-Anywhere 7, RV-105 Thruster Block, and Vernor Engines now look better than ever, plus the Twitch, Ant and Spider include new stunning variants. On top of that, we’ve added new tuning values on some of those engines.
Galaxy Texture Map Update
The game’s galaxy cubemap has been updated in Room to Maneuver. This environment map has been carefully crafted to reflect a nicer color palette and more defined celestial objects. With double the resolution, it will be impossible not to enjoy the view while exploring Kerbin’s star system.
Click here to see high res images.
Scrollable PAW
Another small quality-of-life feature we’re adding to the game is the addition of a scrollbar to the Part-Action-Window. This will keep the PAW within the bounds of the screen when they get too big, something that might come in handy for players who use mods and fill those up
And more!
To learn more you can read the full Changelog here:
===========================v1.7.0===========================

Commercial External Flagpole
The flags and flagpole in front of a business are one of the first things that potential customers see. Because of this, it is critical to make a strong first impression of quality and strength when displaying your flagpole. Aluminum Commercial External Halyard Flagpoles provide such an impression. While residential external halyard flagpoles are typically 15 to 35 feet, Commercial External Halyard Flagpoles can stretch to a high and impactful 35 to 80 feet. The outside rope on the flagpole (external halyard) gives these flagpoles the traditional look people associate with classic flagstaffs. An Aluminum Commercial External Halyard Flagpole is sure to enhance the image of any office or business.
Reasons to have a Flag pole at your business location:
1. Get Noticed- Many cities' codes or ordinances regulate the height of monument signs, but do not impose restrictions on flagpoles. This makes it possible for a business to display a flag with its logo at a much taller height than a monument sign.
2. Long Life Expectancy- Our Commercial Flagpoles last so long you will never need to buy a new one.
3. Choices- You have so many options and choices when it comes to picking out your Commercial Flagpole.
4. We Do all the Work- When we sell you a flagpole, all of the hardware is included and we will even install it for you.
External Halyard Aluminum Flagpoles
Our standard selection of Aluminum External Halyard Flagpoles (halyard on the outside of the flagpole) are available in mounted heights from 15 ft. to 80 ft. with a ground set foundation. A5, C2, C4, D1, E1 E3 Green Tea, Cleatus, Houndoom
ah mal mynsavior as always
A5: most impressive talent
Green Tea- He can balance plates on sticks!! He’s very good at balance in general he could probably learn to walk a tightrope in a day if he really tried hard enough
Cleatus- He’s really good at flagpole spins, he was probably in JROTC in high school and he was TOP at that shit, he’s very good with long objects 👀
Houndoom- A pretty good singer!! Even though he likes more rock and stuff he’s good at slow songs with a lot of feeling tbh lots of yelling parts
C2: in what position do they sleep?
G.T- he really tries to sleep on his back but he ends up on his stomach holding onto his pillow super tight
Cleatus- Sleeps on his back but fucking sprawled, his legs are always fucking open never any room to fucking put your own
Hound- His right side is his favorite, kinda curled up into the fetal position is for max fucking comfort
C4:what is their major comfort food?
G.T- cup of noodles, HE NEVERR EATS THEM because that’s not proper and good of a rich people’s servant that’s so well primmed up it feels nice eating something he sometimes got to eat in school on the good days
Cleatus- waffles and chicken absolutely covered in chocolate sauce and syrup, it was his meal after his first breakup with someone he really really cared for at a really hole in the wall place, it reminds him of that night but like in a ‘it’s okay’ type of way
Hound- Poptarts, s’mores kind, theyre just really nice to have warmed up and with a cup of coffee, the coffee smell reminds him of his mom and the poptarts of his daily breakfast back then
D1:how would they decorate their house?
G.T- he’s really with the whole furniture that turns into other furniture scene, so tables that form bigger tables, couches that turn into tables, hidden shelves that pull out, and then just so maaaany of those stained glass rainbow wind chimes and shag carpets that are kept smelling like laundry sheets
Cleatus- have you ever met a dude from Texas, that but not republican and no confederate flags hbfdjbdfrf, he does really like the old rustic cabin look though, the cozy feel
Hound- he’d probably decorate it like his old house, red furniture, old cd sound system with those magnetic clicky doors but filled with some records he doesn’t have a turntable for with a salt and pepper carpet, lots of reds grays and blacks, dim lighting too and some brown bamboo blinds so just a bit of sun gets through
E1:does the way they do things portray they’re inner personality
G.T- sort of, he is pretty clean and neat inside but he puts on more of a block externally, he’s just trying to do what he can and is pretty stressed out but he doesn’t want to dump that feeling onto someone else even if they ask about it because he thinks he can take care of it if he just stays preoccupied
Cleatus- not really, he’s not that big of an ass but that’s how he has to present himself so others respect/feel intimidated by him
Hound-yeah, he’s just kind of a shit hole and his insides are pretty scrambled up with no impulse filter so when he runs his mouth it’s true, exaggerated but true
E3:do they follow trends or do their own thing
G.T- no, he might like some new fashion and such but he never watches new shows or wears anything you’d find in stores because he’d rather just do what he likes, but it does cause him stress because he will get pressed on new shit and he doesn’t know what is going on
Cleatus- definitely not, the dude barely even looks at his phone and he can care less about current stuff besides news and the most valuable thing on the market
Houndoom- mostly with music, but he keeps up with punk trends and even saves some looks to try for himself, maybe he even has a few dozen social media accounts just to see what’s going on, the bitch probs has a tik tok to look at funny shit
