What is an Occlusal Splint?
Occlusal splints, also known as ‘Night Guards’, are removable dental appliances that are customised to fit your teeth either on the upper or lower arch, to treat night grinding (bruxism). Occlusal splints are generally recommended for people who grind their teeth and patients with extensive dental treatment such as crowns, veneer and dental implants.
How does it work?
An occlusal splint is a slim, hard acrylic or polycarbonate guard that is designed to be worn at night and/or during high stress work.
The splint does not stop you from grinding or clenching, but it does guide the lower jaw to a neutral position that relieves some pressure on the joint and protects teeth from destructive forces.
Will grinding my teeth ruin my teeth?
Bruxism is a condition where a person grinds their teeth and clenches their jaw muscles during sleep. This is an involuntary habit. The reason for this condition is unknown, but stress can play a major role. Bruxism is a very common occurrence and often individuals are unaware of their habit.
What is Bruxism?
Bruxism causes upper and lower teeth to wear against each other and leads to gradual shortening and chipping of the biting surfaces of teeth. This is called attrition and can cause sensitivity. Bruxism can also cause damage to gums, jaw bones, soreness of jaw muscles, TMJ problems, headaches and disturbed sleep.

I went to the dentist today for my post op and there’s something about going to the dentist and having your praise kink stroked when they’re working on you.
So naturally Max is a new patient at the dentist in his new city. Everything is great and fine, the sign up was easy, they took his insurance (an important reason for why he chose them of course) and the wait to get in an exam room was negligible.
Everything changes however, when his new hygienist walks in all sunshine and bright honey eyes. Max can’t see all of his face because he’s already wearing his mask but his eyes are beautiful and crinkly when he smiles. And Max knows he's smiling because the edges of his mask lifts with his cheeks.
His name is Daniel and his voice is lovely, happy and his accent is taking Max for a ride. His dark hair is curly and a little messy, as if he runs his fingers through it often and Max could see a few tattoos peeking out from the sleeve of his bright blue scrubs.
It's lovely, he details everything he’ll be doing for Max today. It's just an intro appointment to get a lay of the land so they can plan his dental journey with them.
“We’re not gonna get into anything too intense today, just a few x-rays, and pictures of your pearly whites and then the doctor will be in to go through his recommendations. And then you’ll be outta here in no time.”
Max can’t help but smile because he can hear the smile in Daniel’s words. Daniel claps and does some finger guns before starting to set up. He puts the radiation vest on Max’s chest, Max does not catalogue the feeling of his gloved fingers when they cup the back of his neck to make sure the vest wasn't digging into his skin.
Daniel tells him how they're going to x-ray and he puts the little device in Max’s mouth.
“You have beautiful teeth, Max.” Daniel says offhandedly, he was looking behind him at a screen. Max clenched his fingers underneath the heavy vest.
“That's it, perfect. I’m gonna move this to your left upper…bite down for me? Beautiful love.” Daniel murmured under breath as he worked. Max dug his fingers in the meat of his thigh.
The torture continued, punctuated with the beep of the x-ray machine when it went off and the fresh smell of Daniel’s cologne mixed with his own natural scent.
“There we go, I just need you to– good boy.”
Max clenched his toes in his sneakers.
“You’re doing so well for me Sweetheart.”
Max wondered what the maximum pressure the little x-ray device could take before the stem snapped in half.
“Perfect baby, just perfect.” Daniel breathed, typing on the computer off to the side with one hand and stroking Max’s cheek unconsciously with the other. Max inhaled sharply.
Daniel looked back at him quickly, worriedly.
“Let me get that out for you, your jaw must be a little sore.” Daniel sounded a little sheepish as he pulled the device away, Max watched the line of spit that still connected them thin away to nothing. He wondered if Daniel saw it too, if he maybe wanted to taste it. Taste what Max tasted like.
He was hard in his shorts.
Thankfully, Daniel took his time with putting back the x-ray extensions and taking off the radiation vest, Max was able to calm down a little. He was further able to refocus when his dentist came in, an older gentleman with shrewd eyes.
They discussed treatment plans and Max heard Daniel making notes whenever the doctor called out certain things. Daniel eventually left the room and his dentist continued to speak to Max about short term and long term goals.
He was out front in the waiting room when he heard a loud honking laugh. While the office assistant scheduled his next appointment, Max’s eyes strayed to a lithe man in bright blue scrubs that turned the corner. He eyed him appreciatively, hearing his voice as he teased another hygienist and they laughed together.
“Alright Max, your next appointment is–” Max doesn’t know when his next appointment is because at that same moment Daniel turns around and sees him and smiles. Max has never really been bowled over by a smile before, by a face. But Daniel’s is gorgeous. Max wanted to kiss him, feel his nose bump his.
If Max was an artist then Daniel would be his muse. As it was, he was simply struck dumb by the man walking over to the desk.
“Georgie, are you treating Max here nicely?” Daniel teased, Max saw George roll his eyes fondly.
“Of course I am Daniel. He’s your favourite patient after all.” George grinned teasingly and Max saw Daniel’s eyes widen a fraction before he settled into a grin of his own.
“That’s right.” Daniel murmured and Max watched the way his lips formed his words. He wished he hadn’t worn his mask earlier so he could have seen how beautiful, sweetheart, and good boy had looked coming from those lips.
Max couldn’t help it. He blushed.
#thought about saving this for Max Fest but I'm really excited to write something not depressing right now so I wanted to share#maxiel#max/daniel#my ficlet

(This is just me trying to have fun and connect some canon events that don't have a clear timeline yet. Some things in this post could have been retconned or are planned to be explored later on in the series.)
The Segyein shown threatening Ivan in Round 3 is probably the consignor that put Ivan up for auctioning, as well as some of the other children shown in both scenes.
Maybe this Segyein takes children they've found off the streets and nurtures them until they are at the point they are can be sold off.
(third image's source)
When were very quickly shown small Till and Ivan in an undisclosed location in Round 6, Ivan noticeably does not have the same appearance he does when being auctioned, looking younger and more deshevled. While Till was probably taken by Urak not long after this scene, if the designs are anything to go off of, Ivan probably wasn't being sold until he was a bit older.
If this Ivan wasn't long off the streets, then maybe he was just being taken somewhere for a health evaluation or something. Till's still younger than Ivan here, but if he was born and raised in Segyein facilities for his whole life up until this point, he probably wouldn't have any major health risks that would need to be monitored and urgently treated so they saw him fit to be sold off (unless the Segyein are selling him early because they see him as a problem child).
If Ivan was stealing to eat, he must have had to resort to eating some insane alien food to survive, and if he was constantly getting sick from it, I wouldn't be surprised if he needed extensive dental work from his teeth decaying due to frequent vomiting as well as treatment for a plethora of other health problems.
#alien stage#alnst#alnst ivan#also if any of this was explained on the patreon feel free to correct some things because I don't have it

October is National Dental Hygiene Month - I don't know, but I assume this is because of the high association of the month with Halloween and, by extension, eating a shitload of candy.
The first time Barbie was a dentist was in 1997, which is more recent than I expected.
This playset came with a Kelly receiving the dental treatment - and holding a toy to comfort her while Dentist Barbie does her thing. Special attention should be drawn to the fact that the playset also includes Barbie's credentials and a tube of Crest toothpaste (a toothpaste brand we don't have in Australia).
Later Dentist Barbies, like the one from the You Can Be Anything series, also have a child for Barbie to perform dentistry on. It does not, however, have branded toothpaste.
The "I Can Be..." Dentist Barbie also does not feature branded toothpaste, does feature a child -- and happens to feature my personal favourite Barbie dentist outfit. I mean, if I saw her out of context, I don't think I would assume this outfit read as "dentist", but I do think it's the cutest.
Besides dentists, do you know what other Barbie cares about dental hygiene?
The 65th anniversary astronaut Barbie features a variety of accessories to support space flight, including a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Dear MagISoWo,
My youngest son, who was born as a werewolf, just turned twelve, and at his last dentist appointment his dentist let us know that he would benefit from having orthodontic treatment. This wasn't a surprise, since all six of his older brothers also had braces, but we're concerned about the fact that his teeth of course change dramatically when he transforms. Is it possible for a werewolf child to have braces and still safely transform without damaging their teeth? Would they need to be taken off and then put back on every month? Or might there be removable options he could use instead?
Thank you
Hello,
Unfortunately this is a common problem for young shapeshifters, especially with the rise of modern orthodontics. There have been various experiments with magical braces, but as you probably know, teeth and the occult are a notoriously bad mix.
It is generally not safe for a werewolf to wear fixed braces. Luckily there are removable options, that are either modelled on the roof of the mouth or on the teeth themselves. These can be easily removed during eating, teeth brushing, and transformations. They are better suited to correct small things like small gaps between the teeth, and small open bites. Bigger issues like corssbites, overbites and underbites are hard to correct with removable braces.
So if your son is in need of more extensive correction, or if he experiences gradual transformation (induced by the waxing moon) or occasional partial tansformations influenced by emotion, these removable braces might still not work for him.
We are not experts, but various studies into the dental development of young werewolves suggests that their teeth and jaws tend to change much more over time than we see in humans. This needs to be taken into account by the person assessing their needs. So if your orthodontist is not used to werewolf patients, we advise you to take your son to a specialist for a second opinion. You an find a list of professionals in the field with werewolf experience on the website of the Lunar Foundation. For instance, many humans get braces for "crowded teeth", but for many werewolves this is simply a sign of the approaching full moon.
Best of luck!

Conservative Approach and Management of Cervical Root Fracture, Case Report by Alaa Eddin Omar Al Ostwani in Journal of Clinical Case Reports MedicaI Images and Health Sciences
Abstract
Root fracture is a rare dental trauma characterized by separation of the cementum, dentin, and pulp tissues and endangering the tooth survival as well. The impact, depending on its severity and direction, could break through a horizontal, vertical, or oblique plane within the dental root. However, the apical and coronal fragments can be reunited through the deposition of connective tissue, calcified bridge, or a combination between them, whereas failure is considered a result of invading the fracture site by granulation infected tissue. Research showed that the more the horizontal breakage site is locating cervically the less the healing chance will be obtained. Furthermore, sacrificing the coronal fragment could be the inevitable result in case the fracture line is over the alveolar crest. This case report presented a conservative management of cervical root fracture in the upper left central incisor located at the same level of alveolar crest in 18-year-old male.
INTRODUCTION
Root fracture is a radiographic finding of dental trauma by which the cementum, dentin and pulp tissues will be separated through an oblique, vertical, or horizontal plane at the apical, medium, or coronal level (1-3). The apical and medium transverse fracture can be allocated using occlusal radiograph, while the bisecting angle exposure is used to detect the cervical fracture type (1). Furthermore, Cone Beam Computed Tomography CBCT can be of great benefits for better visualization and determination of the site, direction, and extension of the fracture line especially for complicated cases (1, 4). Clinically, the crown position could be sometimes displaced with visible mobility and tenderness, and pulp test is usually negative except for a few cases in which indicates high percentage of pulp survival (1).
Indeed, the vertical fracture followed by the cervical transverse type are considered with the worst prognosis (2, 3). To date, the common management of the former is achieved via extraction (1), although recently there are successful attempts to reunite the two fragments through the use of bioactive root canal filling materials and endodontic fibre-post along with full crown coverage (5, 6), while the treatment of the latter mainly depends on repositioning the coronal segment in case of displacement then applying a flexible splint usually for four weeks, but can be extended up to four months if the fracture site is close to the cemento-enamel junction(1). Regular monitoring of the broken root is mandatory and, thus, any sign of necrosis clinically or radiographically necessitates an endodontic treatment mostly limited to the coronal segment aiming for apexification at the fractured surface; the reason for this is the difficulty to determine an accurate working length at an irregular and oblique root fracture plane (1, 7, 8). On the other hand, if the root fracture is located over the alveolar crest, the excision of the coronal fragment will become inevitable. Subsequently, an orthodontic traction, crown lengthening, or surgical repositioning of the remaining root accompanied with gingival recontouring or osteoplasty can be carried out to relocate the fracture plane in more appropriate coronal position through which the intracanal fibre-post and the full crown coverage will be better seated with respect to the biological width and marginal gingiva (1, 9, 10). On the other hand, the development of immature permanent incisors and the radicular pulp should be maintained after removing the coronal fragment. Therefore, it is advisable to perform partial pulpotomy using either of calcium hydroxide dressing or non-staining calcium silicate followed by reinforced glass ionomer or composite restoration aiming for apexogenesis. However, in the severe and non-restorable cases, coronectomy can be a suitable option to maintain the alveolar bone for subsequent implant installation (1).
In fact, research is still ongoing to maximize the survival rate of the teeth undergone root fracture. Hence, this case study reported a successful conservative management of cervical root fracture in the upper left central incisor located at the same level of alveolar crest in 18-year-old male.
Case presentation
An 18-year-old male patient was referred to paediatric dental clinic to treat broken anterior tooth after falling down the stair at school one week ago. The orthopantomogram taken in another clinic showed cervical root fracture in the upper left central incisor 21 (figure 1). No displacement was noticed but the crown was tender to percussion with a noticeable mobility. The pulp test, using Endo Ice spray (-50o), revealed that all upper incisors 11, 12, 21, 22 were positive, and the sulcus depth was within the normal range 2.5 millimetre MM. The patient and his parents were advised that the fractured tooth can be saved, and the treatment plan was discussed with them in collaboration with the referring dentist, then an informed consent was obtained before treatment. After debriding the upper incisors with Chlorhexidine 0.12%, a flexible splint using steel arch wire was adhered to the labial surface of the four upper incisors with composite, and the patient was advised to keep on soft diet for two weeks in addition to maintaining an optimum oral hygiene by using soft brush and chlorhexidine 0.12% mouth wash for seven days. The interproximal caries in 11, 21 were treated conservatively after two weeks utilizing indirect pulp capping technique to preserve the pulp, and an aesthetic composite restoration was applied over. Interestingly, When the splint was detached after four months, there was a noticeable improvement regarding the mobility and tenderness to percussion, also the sensibility test was still positive. Indeed, the patient was cooperative and taking care of his tooth perfectly by eating gently, brushing with care, and avoiding any thermal stimuli. The reason for this meticulous care was explained by the patient himself in his own words: “I consider this tooth is mainly for aesthetic not for function, just to avoid putting any implant or artificial tooth instead”. However, because the youth was studying and working at the same time as he was the breadwinner of his family, the next observation was carried out after three years of dental trauma. Clinically, the tooth was asymptomatic and responding well to pulp test with normal mobility, also the gingival probing was within the normal average 2.5 mm. In addition, a localized fibrous connective tissue was observed on the labial gingiva at the same estimated level of the fracture line (figure 2). The periapical radiograph revealed that the root fracture was still visible through a thin radiolucent line at the same level of the crestal bone without any resorption or pathology around (figure 3).
DISCUSSION
Root fracture is considered a serious dental trauma threatening the survival of the tooth in the oral cavity (2). Studies disclosed different types of interactions among the periodontium, dentin, and pulp at the fracture site by which the healing process will be directed and outlined (2, 3, 10). Commonly, the connective tissue will be interposed as a mediator connecting the two fragments together through a radiolucent line on radiograph. The second type of healing is formed by the interposition of radiopaque calcified tissue at the fracture site, whereas the least common is established by intermediating the fracture site by a combination of bone and connective tissue (4). However, failure can be recognised by the presence of granulation tissue invading the root fracture site accompanied with surrounding bone resorption. Clinically, the coronal fragment will suffer from increasing mobility and gingival swelling at the fracture site in addition to discharging sometimes through the gingival sulcus (4, 10).
This case study is distinguished by the healing process of a challenging cervical root fracture, located at the same level of alveolar crest, probably achieved through the interposition of connective tissue at the fracture site. Indeed, the periodontal ligament, junctional epithelium and the connective tissue attachment acted as an active barrier and prevented the intraoral bacteria from invading the fracture site; this can be added to the meticulous oral hygiene and care maintained by the patient after dental trauma. Actually, the splinting duration in this case repot was only for four months, whereas a current conservative management of cervical root fracture was carried out through long-term stabilization by using an orthodontic wire adhered to the palatal surface of upper central incisors (11).
As a matter of fact, this case report has many limitations including the lack of regular observations according to the International Association of Dental Traumatology, in addition to the limited quality of radiographs. In fact, the patient was busy and engaged in his studying and working. Therefore, he hardly came back for follow up after three years, also he had Radiophobia and, thus, no other radiographs were taken to get better visualization of the fracture direction and healing process.
In a conclusion, within the limitations of this case report, the conservative management of cervical root fracture might be of great benefit to help the patient avoid the complicated prosthodontic procedures and maintain aesthetics.

Dr. Anurag Bhargava, a renowned maxillofacial surgeon in Indore, provides invaluable insights into this fascinating field, highlighting its importance and the transformative impact it can have on patients' lives.
What is Maxillofacial Surgery?
Maxillofacial surgery, also known as oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS), involves surgical interventions to treat diseases, injuries, and defects of the face, mouth, teeth, and jaws. This specialty bridges the gap between medicine and dentistry, requiring a deep understanding of both fields. Procedures can range from corrective jaw surgery and facial trauma reconstruction to dental implants and cosmetic enhancements.
Common Conditions Treated by Maxillofacial Surgeons
1. Facial Trauma:
Fractures: Maxillofacial surgeons treat fractures of the jaw, cheekbones, and eye sockets, ensuring proper alignment and healing.
Soft Tissue Injuries: These include lacerations and injuries to the facial skin and muscles, often requiring precise suturing to minimize scarring.
2. Corrective Jaw Surgery (Orthognathic Surgery):
Malocclusion: This involves correcting misaligned jaws to improve chewing, speaking, and facial aesthetics.
Sleep Apnea: Surgical intervention can help reposition the jaw and airway structures to alleviate obstructive sleep apnea.
3. Congenital Disorders:
Cleft Lip and Palate: Maxillofacial surgeons perform surgeries to repair these congenital deformities, improving function and appearance.
Craniofacial Anomalies: These are complex conditions affecting the skull and face, often requiring multi-disciplinary surgical approaches.
4. Dental and Oral Health:
Impacted Teeth: Removal of impacted wisdom teeth and other problematic teeth.
Dental Implants: Placement of dental implants to replace missing teeth and restore oral function.
5. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders:
TMJ Dysfunction: Treatment includes surgical and non-surgical options to alleviate pain and improve jaw function.
The Importance of Maxillofacial Surgery
Maxillofacial surgery is vital for restoring both function and aesthetics. Early Detection Saves Lives: The Significance of Oral Cancer Screenings
In today’s world, where health awareness is becoming increasingly prevalent, we often hear about the importance of cancer screenings. Screenings for breast, lung, colon, and prostate cancers are commonly recognized and frequently discussed. Yet, an equally critical health check that merits increased focus is the examination for oral cancer.
Oral cancer, though not as widely highlighted, constitutes a serious and potentially fatal ailment impacting numerous individuals annually. In this article, we’ll explore the significance of oral cancer screenings, their role in early detection, and why they should be a routine part of your dental care.
Understanding Oral Cancer
To grasp the significance of these screenings, it’s essential to first comprehend what oral cancer entails. This malignancy can manifest in any area of the oral cavity, including the lips, back of the throat, tongue, gums, inner cheeks, as well as the ceiling or base of the mouth. Oral cancer initiates from atypical cellular proliferation, which can form a mass and potentially metastasize if not addressed promptly, underscoring the importance of early discovery.
The Role of Your Dentist
Your Ralston dentist is not only concerned with your teeth and gums; they play a vital role in monitoring your oral health, including the early detection of oral cancer. In the course of a routine dental visit, your practitioner in the 80002 area will conduct an examination for oral cancer as a routine part of their overall assessment.
Early Detection Matters
1. Improved Survival Rates: The most significant advantage of early detection through oral cancer screenings is the potential for better treatment outcomes. When oral cancer is identified at an early stage, the chances of successful treatment and survival dramatically increase.
2. Less Invasive Treatment: Early-stage oral cancer often requires less aggressive treatment, which can mean fewer side effects, quicker recovery, and a better overall quality of life for patients.
3. Lower Treatment Costs: The cost of treating advanced oral cancer can be significantly higher than treating it in its early stages. By detecting it early, patients can potentially avoid the financial burden of extensive treatments.
4. Reduced Pain and Discomfort: Advanced oral cancer can lead to more distress and discomfort for patients. Early detection can help prevent these distressing symptoms.
Risk Factors for Oral Cancer
Several risk factors improve the likelihood of developing oral cancer. These include:
– Tobacco use, including smoking and smokeless tobacco.
– Heavy alcohol consumption.
– Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.
– Excessive sun exposure to the lips.
– A family history of oral cancer.
– Poor oral hygiene and dental care.
Anticipating an Oral Cancer Examination
An oral cancer screening is a painless and quick process that can be done during your regular dental checkup. Cosmetic dentist Arvada will visually inspect your mouth for any abnormalities, including red or white patches, sores, or lumps. They may also use specialized tools to examine your throat and neck for any signs of oral cancer.
The Importance of Self-Examination
While routine dental checkups are essential, you can also play a role in early detection by performing self-examinations at home. Be vigilant and look for any unusual changes in your mouth, such as persistent sores, difficulty swallowing, or changes in the color or texture of your oral tissues. If you notice anything concerning, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist.
Incorporating oral cancer screenings into your dental routine is vital for early detection and should never be overlooked. Catching oral cancer in its initial stages significantly boosts the chances of successful treatment and survival. Emphasizing preventative care and quick recognition is critical; therefore, maintaining optimal oral hygiene, reducing risk factors, and committing to consistent dental appointments are imperative. Various National Library of Medicine studies highlight how early diagnosis can enhance treatment effectiveness and survival rates.
At Ralston Creek Dental, our dedication lies in delivering all-encompassing dental services, oral cancer evaluations included, to our clientele in Arvada, CO. Your health and safety stand as our utmost concerns. Should you have any worries regarding your dental health or wish to arrange a consultation, please feel at ease to reach out to us.
