🌲🛣 Born To Be Wild ☁️🌲Signs of autumn along British Columbia’s Fishing Highway 24. A winding and steep descent down to the valley below which is filled with dense morning fog. At the bottom of the mountain, the small community of Little Fort, BC and the Yellowhead Highway (BC Hwy 5) which runs along the beautiful North Thompson River. Looking southeast down Highway 24, over Little Fort, the North Thompson River, the southern foothill of Mount Fennell just above North Thompson Islands Provincial Park, over Chu Chua and beyond to Chinook Mountain. BC’s Fishing Highway 24 (aka The Interlakes Highway or Little Fort Highway) runs east to west between Little Fort (Hwy 5) to 100 Mile House (Hwy 97). A route that fur traders used centuries ago. Just up ahead, a ‘runaway lane’ for vehicles or heavily loaded commercial trucks which is used as a last resort when vehicles lose their braking power. This particular runaway lane leads a vehicle up a sloped gravel road to slow it down and is called ‘gravity bed’. Vacation Day 1: Vancouver to Quesnel approx. 630 km. Gorgeous sunny day for the most part, temperatures peaked in Lillooet at 28°C where we stopped for dinner, then quickly cooled off as the clouds and rain rolled in along Hwy. 97. Made it to the Billy Barker Casino Hotel just as the sun was setting around 10pm with still enough time for a night cap and some slots. Extra thankful for the longer days currently. The Quesnel Foot Bridge was built in 1928 for foot traffic and horse-drawn vehicles. The “Horses must not exceed walking pace” sign is petty legendary around these parts.
