I always feel like such a pervert but God I love it when butches do that thing they do. When the chilvary is so obviously foreplay. When they carry your groceries and wait for you while you do your nails and guiding you gently down the street with their hand on the palm of your back. When you're at a bar and some weirdo is hitting on you and they rush to put their arm around you and let him know you're spoken for and I clench my hand around the bottle incase things get ugly and I need to defend them. so once again talking abt James Bond x queer elders- Stop screaming, it's just me- So anyway, talking more on this subject

I just rly like the idea of, like. James Bond coming into...how do you call this, unfiltered? unconditional? more organic? contact w the queer community at a later stage in life. or like, having more room to and therefore pursuing a sort of queer awakening later in life. And like coming into contact with & integrating more w the queer community,. but like specifically the "older generation" of the queer community.

Like he's not meeting & learning about queerness and queer history from 20-somethings; he found the local butches who run a furniture restoration course/have a local carpentry or etc group and they take him in under their wing.

(Okay actually lmao, I still like the idea that they thought he also was a butch, maybe a closeted/questioning one, and tacitly include him into their circle, only for Q to show up at the end of one of the classes and they have to recalculate the whole thing. And then they realize yes he IS a baby queer at the tender age of 40-something they just got the trajectory wrong lol)

But yea the real point of this being. I like the idea that James Bond never, like. really had a huh maybe I am queer moment cuz of how his adult life panned out - like I think he's bi and not conflicted about it but never really, like, thought of himself as "a member of the queer community" cuz again his everyday life doesn't... really bear that out. Like it doesn't serve his everyday spy life a purpose and also it never really came up.

But now he has room to really explore that and sort of become queer+, like, ponder & reaffirm his queerness and what it might mean to "be a member of the queer community" but purposefully this time. And specifically in the context of connecting with older butches and esp butch activists. He's not going to speak like the other 20-somethings who are also under these older butches' wings despite maybe having similar number of years as them in terms of queer awakening; he'd still be more aligned rhetorically with the older butches. I think it'd be interesting and also a not-as-often explored situation/character dynamic that I'd want to see more of, esp vis a vis Bond.

butch = complete rejection of femininity, and reclamation of masculinity (as a woman or nonbinary lesbian) to solely attract other women/sapphics.

femme = subversion and reclamation of femininity (as a woman or nonbinary lesbian) to solely attract other women/sapphics

These two identities are gender nonconforming due to the fact that womanhood itself is defined as a compliment to manhood. Historically, womanhood was only considered to serve men. Lack of attraction to men has oftentimes defined lesbians as “failed women”. For example, you can see this in how medical gatekeeping forces trans women to have to perform hyperfemininity and heterosexuality in order to receive access to transition care because those standards were considered the defining features of womanhood. This gatekeeping was significantly more widespread in the past (and I hesitate to say if that’s gone away in the present).

Butch and femme are two sides of the same coin. Counterparts. They are nouns, complete identities, not just descriptions. Butches protect femmes, femmes protect butches. They are also not mandatory or required to be a lesbian, so it’s not necessary to fit into either category. They are not “another gender binary.”

Butches are not “basically men” and they do not benefit from masculinity. Femme does not inherently mean hyper feminine, and it does not require performing patriarchally imposed expressions of femininity (such as wearing make-up, shaving, only wearing dresses). Butches and femmes are still butches and femmes even when wearing plain t-shirts and pants some days. It’s not an outfit to take on and off.

“Futch” does not exist as a material identity because butch means a strict rejection of femininity, while femme is a subversion of femininity. There are also roles that are considered with butch and femme, while futch does not have anything of the sort. “Futch” = neither, essentially.

This post is meant to be simple to get the basic idea across, as there’s more aspects to butch/femme culture that I didn’t go over. Butch and femme also involves specific behaviors in relation to courtship, roles, or protection of each other. You can read stone butch blues to get a better idea of that aspect as a starting point.
