Hi! Hello! I'm not sure if I can make a request, but if I can here's my request!
Can you do an LED mask reader who has a workshop underneath the base that the 141 doesn't know about (except Price, he approved it he just didn't tell the others, he didn't tell Shepherd too)
And when someone breaks something (like a gadget) they tell them to come to their workshop so they can fix it
It's okay if you don't do this! I just really like the idea :)
YES YES YES PLS THIS IS SO CUTE!! (Also PLEASE don't be afraid to invade my askbox, it's always open for brainrot, requests and the such~) Unfortunately I couldn't really incorporate the mask into this, just reader being a lil gremlin I hope that's okay 😭
Tumblr media
The base has bunkers in case of an emergency and evacuation, but there are some passages and dead-ends that have become completely neglected. Price doesn't know how the hell you caught wind of those abandoned rooms but with his authority combined with Laswell's, they manage to allocate a space for you without the knowledge of any stuffy generals like Shepherd.
While it takes some months until anyone else in the 141 is invited to your underground workshop, they do know something is up. One minute you're around and then the next you've disappeared and unreachable (the first few weeks when you cleaned up the bunkers there was absolutely no signal underground). However they had enough faith in you and Price's lack of concern was signal enough to calm down.
It was only when Soap had come back from a mission, he could only groan in despair at his battered hardware. He's normally a clean demolitions expert, but a mission going south quicker than he could blink meant that his typical tools had succumbed to the explosions he set off. Unable to say no to Johnny's pout as he looked around at everyone like a kicked puppy, you eventually give him a reassuring pat on the back.
"See me downstairs, I'll fix it."
... what?
Johnny - as well as Gaz and Ghost who watched the exchange - just stare at you silently as you walk away. Downstairs? You mean the run down evacuation tunnels that are so run down and poorly maintained they're probably more of a death trap than whatever could be up above? But sure enough, you walk in the direction to one of the known entrances to the bunkers and they hastily chase after you (Price also following a little behind because he just knows this is going to be entertaining).
When they find you downstairs, even Price is in awe of what you've done with the place. It's filled with various forms of high-end tech. An impressive blend of both software running automatically on clean screens and gritty hardware that's sprawled across various workbenches and occasionally forgotten on the ground. There's only a singular hanging light at the center of the ceiling, but with a fresh bulb and the ambient light of all your other technology, the place is lit more than enough.
"Bloody hell..." Kyle pulls away from the rest of the 141 and joins you, his eyes following the curves and dips of a nearby piece of machinery he has never seen before but the general shape has him half convinced it's a bloody bomb.
"Like what you see?" You turn to the rest of the task force. You can't stop yourself from straightening your back in pride as the boys were clearly in awe of your handiwork.
"You were hiding this from us?" Simon asks. His voice always has a bite but you could tell that he was just stupefied, his question not just directed to you as he shoots a look to Price who stifles a smug smirk.
"We had some spare space," Price explains. "Thought it could use the renovation."
"Renovation? You rebuilt this from the ground up," Johnny exclaims, taking in the room as if it was a hidden hoard of treasures.
"Say, you'd let us pay you a visit down here, yeah?" Kyle turns back to you, eyes gleaming. The rest of the task force join in their own way. Johnny's nodding enthusiastically, John cocks an eyebrow at you, and even Simon tilts his head in curiosity, waiting for your next words.
"Hm..." you look away, bringing a finger to your chin and tapping it in contemplation. Eventually you let out a huff as you snatch Johnny's broken gear from his hands and start shooing them out. "I'll have to think about it. I'll get back to you in five to seven business days."
Johnny starts animatedly protesting but lets himself be pushed by you out of the door. Kyle laughs while Price hushes them all. Below all the commotion was an underlying understanding and agreement. You don't even need to say it aloud but they'll all certainly be crashing at your underground workshop and they were more than welcome to. In truth, as much as you loved having your private workshop, the only thing that could make it better was entrusting it with the dearest people in your lives.

Some House of Wax/Sinclair Brothers Headcanons I’ve had in my head that I’ve already shared w the server but… The rest of the world deserves to know.
Tumblr media
Related to gif, Vincent is the ‘medical expert’ of the house solely because he’s the one who knows the human body/first aid the best. I mean, in the movie we see him stitching up those wounds on what’s-his-face pretty neatly, right? This is also part of the reason why he automatically reaches for Bo during this scene.
Given his birth date was sniffed out by fans before me (1970) and this man looks like he’s a cosplayer sometimes, I truly believe Bo idolised Elvis Presley as a kid, and maybe a bit as an adult as well. He still enjoys listening to rock n’ roll from that era when he’s in a good mood. When he’s in a bad mood, or doing his business™️ in his sex dungeon/basement, that’s when the Marilyn Manson comes on.
All of them have had an alt phase of some sort. For Vincent it was goth, for Bo it was rivethead/industrial rock and for Lester it was grunge.
Les is also down bad fucking horrendous for alt people in general. Yes, he has magazines stuffed down his sofa, yes, they used to be Bo’s.
Bo is allergic to nuts. He also gets really nasty hay fever. I also think possibly him having sensory issues/picky eater could’ve led to meltdowns as we see in the opening. And really, it’s the 1970s/80s do you expect his parents to understand or sympathise?
In contrast, Lester has the constitution of a Greek god somehow and has probably eaten some absolutely vile shit as a kid.
I know most people interpret Vince as sweet and shy but… While I do think he’s more measured and withdrawn compared to Bo, I also think being the ‘favourite’ in terms of being Trudy’s little art prodigy contributed to a sort of spoilt brattiness esp as a kid. (Exhibit A: The ‘Bo Sux’ fridge art in the opening) As an adult, there’s still a sense of entitlement to him. What I’m saying is that he’s an insufferable art nerd lol. He definitely isn’t toothless and his arguments with Bo aren’t necessarily one-sided, he’s just capable of ignoring him when he wants to; he’s used to his twin, after all. While I do think he’s capable of being soft, don’t forget this man killed a woman in cold blood and recorded it. I also think he can get snippy enough during arguments to combat Bo’s generally sharp tongue.
Speaking of which, everyone in the (surviving) family knows ASL. It’s necessary when communicating with Vincent.
Again with how prolific a killer Vincent is, I suspect he may be the one who does the most murder out of all of them. Bo is the handsome ‘face’ of Ambrose, and Vincent is right under the seedy underbelly with a knife, ready to spill guts (and then sew it up again once he’s got them in the workshop). Lester is similar to Bo in that he mostly just guides people toward the town, but I do think he gets his own notions sometimes.
From a more x reader perspective, Bo strikes me as a man who’s most charming when he’s not trying to be. Of course he can put on an act for victims/tourists, but those are just empty words, y’know? Also, has a kinda cheesy side.
I know everyone has Jonesy as Lester’s dog but… I think she’s really Vincent’s. In the movie, she’s always seen with Vin or in the house of wax itself, it’s only when he dies that she goes to Lester. I actually think Les is a cat person (tell me he wouldn’t actually encourage their hunting habits for his own personal collection…) while Vin is a dog person. Also, hot take I think Bo loves snakes and reptiles.
Given that the House of Wax and Ambrose itself is a big ol’ art project, and we’ve seen the state of the church (permanently in the middle of dead ass crusty Trudy’s funeral) I think there may be a sort of difficulty letting go of their past in the brothers, maybe some hoarding as well (I mean we haven’t even seen some of the other houses in Ambrose but this is just speculation). We get the sense that Ambrose is a place where time stands still, forever, until its conservationists finally die. Idk I’m talking out my ass here

The Hunter Pt. 3 - Chimeras
~Original story~
Previous
CW: Whump, description of injuries, restraints, bound and gagged, some magic stuff, implied character death.
Elafi woke from a restless sleep and the first thing he noticed was that he wasn't in his bed. He was greeted by the sensation of dirt and dry leaves under his body, stinging and digging into his skin. He was immediately alert. He opened his eyes and raised his head, which tilted to the left in an odd way.
It was then that he remembered: The trap, the hunter, Warrick, his antlers.
He put a hand to the right side of his skull. He only felt a small stump of bone, still with jagged edges. Terror came back and he felt as if his chest was tightening.
"A´ight, you're awake."
Elafi turned around and saw Cazador sitting on a fallen log, watching him. They were in the middle of the forest. Elafi didn't know how he got there, the image of Cazador's workshop being the last thing on his mind.
The man fiddled with his knife, completely calm.
"Let's play a game," he said. "First you run, and then I'll catch you. Run as fast as you want, but if you really try to escape or get help, Warrick is a dead man."
Elafi felt his heart pounding hard against his chest, the beats spreading like painful pulses throughout his body.
"You have a five-minute head start." He pulled a stopwatch out of his pocket and activated it. "Time is ticking."
Elafi ran.
He didn't care where, he just ran forward. He was trapped in a nightmare from which he saw no escape. Even with the minutes of advantage, he knew that Cazador would find him sooner or later. Professional hunters were experts at following trails to catch their prey, and Elafi was still very ignorant and inexperienced. He was easy prey.
He remembered Warrick. "He was captured because he tried to save me and now he is in danger," he thought. But what could he do? Was there any way to beat Cazador?
The teen stopped running, tired and panting. How much time had passed already? Anxiety and paranoia made his head spin, and it didn't help at all that his whole body felt unbalanced, leaning slightly to the left due to the lack of weight on his right antler. What was the best path to take? Should he hide? Keep running? Elafi didn't know what to do, everything seemed too much for his brain to process.
Suddenly he heard noises behind him and his instincts led him forward. The trees were shadows at his sides, dodging them in zigzags, without stopping. He couldn't stop. His gaze was fixed ahead and that's why he didn't see the ravine.
For a moment his hooves left the ground. Elafi thought he was flying. And then he fell, rolling on the ground. The branches, roots and stones in the path made cuts and scrapes on his arms and legs. He squeezed his eyelids shut, feeling the world spinning around him, battering his body. Finally he stopped when he hit the ground with a sharp thud. He felt a rush of pain run through his right arm, crushed under the weight of his body.
He opened his eyes carefully. There were only bushes and trees around him. Several meters above him was the stone wall he had fallen over. He tried to move and let out a howl of pain. His right arm didn´t respond, and it sent stabbing pains through the rest of his body. As best he could, he stood up, looking at his wounds. His right arm was swollen, between the wrist and the elbow. It was impossible to lean on it. "It must have broken," he thought sadly.
His knees were bleeding and burning. His palms were also covered in scrapes. His face was dirty with tears, sweat, and dirt.
But he was still alive, and that meant there was still hope. This macabre game was not over yet, and Elafi decided that he would do everything in his power to avoid being hunted.
~
The next time Warrick saw Cazador, he was going to kill him.
Elafi had cried until unconsciousness and still Warrick was unable to do anything. Nothing was going to change the reality of his situation. And the reality was that he had failed again. He hadn´t protected Elafi and now the boy was suffering the consequences.
Warrick hated himself. Himself and that damn Cazador.
Several minutes after Elafi fell asleep, the door to the workshop opened again and Cazador walked through. Warrick wanted to ignore him, not wanting to give him the pleasure of seeing how upset he was; but when he saw him approach Elafi, he couldn't control his tongue.
“Get away from him, you fucking son of a bitch!”
The hunter gave him a deadpan expression.
“Shut up or you'll wake the boy, and that will ruin my game.”
“What fucking game? Don't you see that he's a human being and not a circus animal?”
Warrick knew he was acting irrationally, but his emotions were stronger than his logic. So of course he had to continue yelling and hurling insults at his hateful captor.
Cazador, clearly irritated, ended up taking a rag and roughly shoving it into Warrick's mouth, before using a handkerchief and tying it between his teeth as a cleave gag.
"I'm going to have some fun," the man said, lifting the unconscious teenager onto his shoulders, before adding with hostility, "Then I'll figure out how to get rid of you."
How much time had passed since then, since Warrick had been left alone in the workshop? Half an hour? Three hours? With no visible windows he couldn't even calculate the passage of time. He needed to do something now, but he couldn't get out of those bonds, and his irritated and bleeding skin could become infected if he continued to thrash around like that. He needed to think of a plan. He needed to save Elafi.
He could try to drag the chair, move it closer to the wall with the carpentry tools and try to free himself, but he couldn't be sure he'd be able to use them once he reached them. Besides, trying to move might cause him to lose his balance and end up falling, and from the ground his chances would diminish even more.
Cazador's threat seemed serious. If the man planned to keep Elafi, he would definitely need to get rid of Warrick, either because he saw him as a guardian for the deer boy or simply because he considered him a witness to his twisted plans. Whatever it was, if he didn't get out of there, Warrick was almost a hundred percent sure he wouldn't end up alive.
And then an idea occurred to him. He'd seen this work in some movies: maybe if he dropped the chair, using enough force, he could break it and free himself. That or be left on the ground, tied up and with no way to get up or escape.
The chair he was in was simple, made of wood. Perhaps made by Cazador himself in that same workshop. It was definitely a risky move, but Warrick preferred that to being left with his hands literally tied.
Leaning back and forth, using his feet to help him, Warrick began to swing his body in a controlled manner, gradually increasing the intensity, until at one point he pushed himself off with his feet and let himself fall backwards. He raised his neck to avoid hitting his head, but still hurt his back when he hit the ground.
Warrick wasn't an especially religious guy, but he figured that if there was a god out there, he decided to give him some luck that day, because the chair did break, not completely, but enough that this time his struggles allowed him to loosen the ropes and free himself.
He tore off the gag, spat out the rag and stood up. A sudden dizziness forced him to seek support from the wall while he caught his breath, and it took several minutes before the tiny twinkling stars disappeared from his field of vision. When he felt more stable, he left the cabin, but not before arming himself with a knife he found, just in case, and heading into the forest.
~
Elafi was hiding in some bushes. He managed to see Cazador peering over the top of the ravine, looking down. From that height, he should only be able to see plants. The slope was too steep to go down without the help of the proper equipment or too much expertise, that or risk breaking a bone.
The boy watched silently from his hiding place. He didn't move or remove the hand that covered his mouth until several minutes after Cazador's image disappeared from view.
A shaky sigh of relief escaped his lips. He couldn't stay there forever, his wounds needed attention and nothing assured him that the hunter wouldn't find him sooner or later.
With the help of his left arm and legs he began to crawl along the ground, for fear of being an easier target if he got up. The pain in his body took a backseat, as he moved on pure adrenaline, ignoring the screams of his bones and muscles. He could almost imagine the racing beats of his heart being transmitted to the ground every time he dragged his chest across it.
Then he smelled it: a fresh, pleasant smell, like a deep, delicious perfume. The source of the scent was not far away, and Elafi began to make his way towards it, guided like a moth to the light. It was not long before he found it.
In front of him was a tree. Its trunk was smooth and covered in patches of color, ranging from greens, wines and browns. The leaves were thick, spreading out and falling to the sides like a giant umbrella. The scent was caused by the golden sap of the tree, which was escaping from a cut in the trunk, spilling out like a waterfall of honey. Elafi crawled up to face it. The scent was so penetrating and hypnotic that the boy felt something primal awaken within him.
He licked the trunk, drinking in the golden substance. It tasted good. It reminded him of the taste of maple syrup, but different, less sweet. He continued licking, letting the pleasant taste take over him and momentarily forgetting about everything else.
It wasn't until he found himself leaning on both of his arms that something clicked in his head. Elafi pulled himself away from the tree, looking down at himself. His broken arm was back to normal, moving without any pain. The red, swollen skin had returned to its natural color, the scrapes on his knees had closed, as had the rest of the wounds on his body. The only thing that remained was the blood, beginning to dry on his skin and clothes.
Amazed and believing himself blessed by some miracle, he put a hand to the right side of his head; but the absence of his antler remained. He stood up. He even felt full of energy. Whatever that substance was, it had been like manna from heaven.
He decided to keep running through the forest, with the plan of returning to the hunter's cabin. Maybe, if he was lucky, he could rescue Warrick and...
Something pulled at his ankle and Elafi was upside down again, hanging from a tree branch. A scream of frustration could not help but leave his throat.
Elafi, you idiot! This is what you get for running without looking at the ground.
But it didn't matter that he berated himself now. He knew he had no way out. He confirmed this when, shortly after, he could hear Cazador's voice.
“Wow, I didn't think you'd fall for the same trick twice. Well, good for me.”
The hunter walked up to Elafi with a satisfied smile. However, before he could do anything else, Warrick appeared and threw himself at him with a roar and knife in hand. Cazador pulled his knife from his own belt.
"The best gets the kill," Cazador said, with a wide smile. "That's how the laws of nature you like so much dictate, right?"
The two men engaged in a fight of stabs and cuts. Elafi could only watch the scene unfold before his eyes, made even more confusing by being upside down; however, he managed to perfectly distinguish the moment when Cazador made a wide circle forward, cutting and reaching Warrick's abdomen. The smell of blood filled the air.
"NO!"
Elafi's scream was powerful, so much so that it seemed to shake the earth... No, the earth really did shake. The branch the boy was hanging from broke with a crack, making him fall. The tremor lasted only a few seconds, but when it ended it was clear that something had changed in the forest. The atmosphere became tense and a strong breeze ran through the trees, howling. It was as if something had awakened.
The teen stood up. His face was serious and his eyes seemed to shoot flames. He had never looked so angry, and it was a cold, stone-hard fury.
And suddenly the trees leaned and began to beat Cazador with their branches. The man screamed in terror, trying to fight against the leaves and branches that surrounded him and that acted like whips and small blades on his body. Warrick, for his part, stepped back, pressing his abdomen with one arm and observing the scene with his mouth open. It was a surreal image. The trunks bent as if they were made of plasticine and the branches moved like snakes.
He turned his gaze to Elafi, who was standing completely still, with his fists clenched and his gaze fixed on Cazador.
"Elafi," Warrick called him, but the teen gave no sign of having heard him, as if he were in some kind of trance. Warrick approached with slow steps, not wanting to scare him, and gently placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Elafi," he called softly again.
That seemed to finally wake the boy up. Immediately the trees returned to their original form, and the only evidence that they had ever moved were the leaves that fell like a green rain on the ground. Meanwhile, Cazador took great gulps of air, curled up on the ground. His body was covered in bleeding cuts.
"I-It´s... It's a monster!" he said, his voice shaking and pointing at the deer boy with a chubby finger. He stood up as best he could and ran away like an animal fleeing from a predator.
"Wait, don't go there!" Warrick wanted to warn, but it was too late. They only managed to hear the man's scream as he fell down the ravine, and then silence.
Elafi staggered and would have collapsed straight to the ground if Warrick hadn't held him.
"Hey, are you okay?"
The boy blinked slowly, struggling to stay conscious.
"I... I'm fine... Just... very tired..."
He blinked again several times and his eyes noticed the growing red stain on Warrick's shirt.
"W-Warrick, you're hurt!"
The man looked down, glancing at his body.
"Yeah, but don't worry, he just cut me, it's nothing fatal, although I think I'll need some stitches..."
They stayed silent for a while. Neither of them seemed to want to talk about the elephant in the room, so they started their way back home instead. Before leaving, Warrick looked over the edge of the ravine. He could make out Cazador's body down there. From the bent position of his neck, he could guess that he hadn't survived the fall.
Warrick returned to where Elafi was, who seemed to be close to fainting.
"Let's go home for now," said the man.
And that's what they did.

This chapter already started to include some of the magical elements of this story. It should be noted that I have planned this story as a fantasy one, maybe not a lot but a little.
To those who read up to here, thank you very much! You have earned a little star ⭐

A couple weeks ago, I led a zine making workshop/Palestinian solidarity event for my local Asian racial solidarity group. I gave a primer on zines and DIY as well as the political roots of DIY publishing, and some tutorials. The theme was reconnecting to resistance in an open learning circle since the Asian continent has a long and wide breadth history of resistance. We provided zine making supplies and I brought both some Palestinian zines and a curated collection of examples from my personal zine library! It was also potluck style.
It was kind of interesting leading this workshop! I don't consider myself to be an expert on revolutionary histories, there's a lot of theory and info to catch up on, but I read a lot of PFLP and Palestinian resistance writing when I was in my undergrad because I was able to meet Joe Sacco who was the cartoonist who published Footnotes in Gaza and Palestine (around 2017?). I also designed some posters for his Toronto visit in partnership with the TPFF. Most significantly, I read Strategy for the Liberation of Palestine by the PFLP - it is both a historical document and a live program that lays out the fundamentals of Palestinian liberation as well as localized analysis (160~ pages). There were Asian people in attendance originating from all over the continent and of varying faiths but no one was familiar with historic Palestinian resistance, only with the current narrative about israhelli occupation - so of course I was happy to to talk about Ghassan Kanafani, Leila Khaled, and the PFLP and the historic 3rd world solidarity movements across Asia!
Most people weren't familiar with zines either, so I was also very sparkly-eyed in info dumping about zines to the room! One of the participants brought musakhan rolls which are a traditional Palestinian dish... they were SO yummy... I did have more than I should have... and they included the recipe as one of the zine pages!!! There were also many Filipinos present resulting in me going home with a lot of leftover turon (it helped me survive my ongoing depressive episode in April lol)
Overall it was so nice having conversations with others regardless of where they were at in their politicization journey. There is always more to learn, and more time to spend with one another...and we can all grow together too 🫶🏼 politicization can be very personal and I think as long as we can develop principles, sense for collective, and maintain revolutionary imagination - we can survive together!
Here are some of the Palestinian zines that I brought for people to sift through! I have like 20+ pdfs on my computer and more from encampments that I've visited and will hopefully scan soon!
Palestine: An Introduction from DecolonizePalestine ABCs of Occupation & Resistance by Rachel Mattson The Palestinian Struggle for National Liberation by OBF-HRD/Manila University BDS: What it is, Why it matters by Leila Abdula Razzaq Digitized copy of Ghassan Kanafani by Anni Kanafani (Beirut, 1973), found via the internet archive! "Eye of the Harmonograph" by elkement 2024. 3D Lissajous figures.
Thinking about inspiration today! Once, an art platform was asking about who - which artists - have been inspiring me. I want to recapture which artists came to my mind when I filled in that artist profile:
~ Physicist (and noble prize winner) Roger Penrose. I read his book The Road to Reality during the pandemic. Consider it a "popular science book", but nit shy of adding mathematics. I was most enchanted by his hand-drawn old-school illustrations. This book inspired both my attempts at drawing, as well as my digital art. The latter indirectly as my visualization of intriguing functions mentioned by Penrose finally made me install SageMath... which led me to explore threejs and math-related digital art.
~ M. C. Escher who will not need any introduction. I once read he has been more revered among mathematicians than among artists. I don't care. "Gödel. Escher, Bach" was THE formative, influential book of my teenage years. I had always figured, Gödel was my hero. I was into math, not art and music. Or so I thought. Now, I think that maybe, it was Escher after all.
~ An Austrian polymath, the late Peter M. Schuster. He was a laser physicist by training, started a laser physics company, then became a science write specializing in biographies of Austrian physicists, funded a museum called a "Center for the History of Physics". He published poetry and mentioned in an interview he was on the fence of studying either physics or literature. (I wrote kind of a tribute here: https://elkement.art/2021/04/11/peter-m-schuster-on-history-of-science/).
With a little deliberation, I'd add the following three today:
~ Douglas Hofstadter, the author of Gödel, Escher, Bach. His books has stunning images, including also a plot he created during his PhD in solid state physics. I had forgotten that in the meantime, but I guess the fact(?) that a PhD in physics could prepare you for a career / life of making connections between all kinds of hard sciences, arts and literature was certainly something that might have shaped my worldview. My thoughts about Gödel. Escher, Bach including quotes of Hofstadter - how he was thinking about the reception of his book: https://elkement.art/2014/04/26/godel-escher-bach-and-strange-loops-nostalgia-and-random-thoughts/
~ Clifford Stoll - also a wanderer between worlds (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clifford_Stoll), also between worlds dear to me. An astrophysicist who became an expert in cyber security and accidentally started the field of reverse engineering. His book The Cuckoo's Egg is legend in cybersecurity circles. But before I read his book, I actually stumbled upon a video of his: Where he talks about selling ... Klein bottles of blown glass, out of his charming "Doc-Emmet-Brown-style" workshop and art studio!
~ Paul Friedlander - an artist (with degrees in physics and in fine arts) who pioneered what may now be called New Media Art. Look at his light sculptures: https://paulfriedlander.com/Gallery.html . I saw an interview with him... and he also has a Doc-Emmet-Brown-style workshop and art studio. Adding him is actually cheating, or time-travelling. I was quite a while into my own kind of digital art inspired by physics when I stumbled upon an interview with him. But I could not help thinking: Would I have started creating sooner had I noticed that artists like that do actually exist?

Did you know that a single tree can be made to produce multiple types of fruit? In this workshop led by artist and fruit tree expert Sam Van Aken, you will learn the basics of grafting, the ancient agricultural practice that makes hybrid trees possible.
Webinar facilitated by Sam Van Aken on May 16, 2020. Offered in partnership with the Trust for Governors Island Open Orchard Project: https://www.govisland.com/things-to-d...
The Open Orchard School is a two-year series of educational programs co-presented by NYC Parks GreenThumb and the Trust for Governors Island. The Open Orchard School is an extension of The Open Orchard, an expansive new artwork by Sam Van Aken on Governors Island that will take the form of a public orchard of 50 hybrid fruit trees. Each individual tree will contain multiple varieties of peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, cherries and apples that were historically grown in the New York City region over the past 500 years, but which have been lost to climate change and the industrialization of agriculture, preserving their biodiversity for future generations. Many additional trees will be distributed to community gardens in all five boroughs. Through the Open Orchard School, community gardeners and members of the public will learn practical skills related to the project, including in-depth experience with fruit tree care, cultivation, planting, and grafting. Participants who complete multiple workshops can become part of the team working to ensure the ongoing stewardship of the trees as they put down roots across the city.

"Claudien, we're in luck," the lalafel beamed as she led Kharia into a cramped workshop. "I told you I'd find an expert, and here she is." The hyur looked up from his desk and jumped, but quickly regained his decorum.
"Nemjiji, this...this is the Warrior of Light," he stammered. "I thought you were getting one of the Students."
"That was the plan, and Ms. Baldesion said she'd send someone our way, but then I chanced upon Ms. Adarkim here on the way out." She turned to face the auri woman. "I've read your file, and I figured you'd be far more helpful than some ordinary researcher, what with your bevy of soul stones and your... eh..." Kharia crossed her arms and smirked, waiting to see how Nemjiji would talk her way out of the corner she'd stumbled into. "...your, shall we say, unique aetherial circumstances."
"That's a new one," Veronica murmured, amused.
"Can't say she's wrong though," remarked Red. Kharia cleared her throat.
"Nemjiji says you've fished some sort of crystal out of the aetherial sea?"
"Yes, yes, in the drawer here, let me see..." Claudien ruffled through some papers before setting a sizeable emerald-hued gem on the desk. "It bears a similar reading to soul crystals, but far more dense, and we've been unable to decipher it." Kharia picked up the stone and turned it in her hand.
"I've seen stones like this before," she said, "they're not soul stones - not quite. These crystals tend to hold more in the ways of emotion and personality than skill or experience. May I try attuning?"
"Of course, of course! You'd be the first to pull it off, so who am I to stop you," Claudien grinned. Kharia focused on the stone in her hand, opening her mind to its aether. Rather than the bubbling emotions and glimpses of the past she'd seen in the stones Emet Selch had collected, however, she was taken aback by the overwhelming impression of a single word.
"Pandaemonium..." she whispered, unaware of her own speech. Merely saying it left her feeling a deep pit of dread in her stomach. A vision of Elpis flashed before her eyes, and she gasped as she doubled over in shock.
"By the Twelve! Are you alright?!" Claudien exclaimed. Kharia didn't respond, staggering to a nearby bookcase, waving an arm by instinct.
"That's... ah, sage's arts! Claudien, have we any nouliths?" Nemjiji asked, helping Kharia ease herself into a seated position.
"Here!" he replied, tossing a bundle of carved stone rods across the room. Nemjiji unwound them and placed them in Kharia's hands, and they immediately sprang to life, weaving a pattern of aether around their wielder. Kharia's panicked breaths slowed as the magic took effect.
"What did you see?" Claudien asked.
"I have to..." Green strained to put her thoughts together.
"What in the hells was that?!" Veronica interjected. "Plenty of voidsent would kill to instill that kind of dread - who made this crystal?" Red broke through the confusion and spoke.
"We- I need to leave," she said curtly. Waving away the concerned Sharlayans, and directed the nouliths to the desktop. "Keep that crystal under watch. It's dangerous. Tell Raha we'll be in Elpis."
"Wait!" Nemjiji called as Kharia raced out of the lab, "What's Elpis?"
"Long story - ask the Scions," she shouted, not bothering to slow down or turn back.
--------------------------------------------------
Kharia's eyes scanned the idyllic gardens for any sign of disquiet, fingers never far from her manatrigger. Everything looked as it did before, but the vision in that crystal still burned in her mind. Something was wrong in Elpis.
"I take it you're my 'guiding star,' then?" a voice called from behind her. She drew her blade and twirled, leveling it towards an unexpectedly calm man in white robes. "Easy, friend, easy. I'm a friend of Azem's - and I take you know her too, given our fortuitous meeting." Kharia's free hand reached for her breast pocket where the Azem crystal burned warmly. The man's voice was familiar, but she couldn't place it. Still, if he knew Azem, and the stone was reacting, she'd trust him. For now. She sheathed her blade and gave a slight bow.
"Kharia, Kharia Adarkim. I'm looking for a place called-"
"Pandaemonium?" the man offered. Kharia flinched, and cursed her lack of composure. "Your reaction is answer enough. That is my purpose as well. The facility is hidden from prying eyes. Come, I will show you the entrance."
Kharia eyed the decrepit teleporter skeptically.
"You're sure this thing works?" she asked. "Looks like it's being held together by the moss and vines."
"Looks can be decieving," the man replied, "doubly so when glamours are involved." He wordlessly cast a spell, and the machine hummed to life. Stepping onto the platform, he nodded for Kharia to join him, and as she did, waved his hand. A swirl of light surrounded the pair, and just as quickly it faded, leaving them on a cobblestone path leading towards a wrought-iron gate, behind which sat a large, castle-like structure. Kharia could do nought but stare at the edifice, terror sinking into her limbs. After what felt like an eternity, she became aware of a voice.
"...thing okay? Kharia!" She shook her head rapidly, and Green began to weave another spell of calming.
"I'm sorry I... I don't know what came over me. This is Pandaemonium?"
"Indeed. I've a meeting with the chief keyward, and the fact that she isn't here to greet us is a disturbing sign. Are you well enough to join me in my investigation?"
"Whatever's going on here, we need to stop it," Ardbert's voice rang clear in her head, "I may not know the first thing about the Ancients, but this place stinks of evil." Wisps of aether congealed in her hand, and she summoned her scythe.
"We've got this," Veronica said, though she seemed to be talking to herself more than the others. "Whatever's beyond those gates is nothing we can't handle."
"Kharia?" the man asked again. Kharia blinked a few times to quiet her thoughts.
"We're fine, we can do this. Let's go," she mumbled, hoping her voice didn't betray her unease.

Star Born
Masterlist
Chapter 1 - Knowhere
Words: 1967
Warnings: Back to the Future reference because those movies fucking rock! Great Scott!
Tumblr media
A woman popped up from behind one of the machines, the sight of her made Peter weak, sending him straight back to a part of his mind he'd almost forgotten. She was wearing a black leather jacket crested with studs on the shoulder parts, the same torn light grey long-sleeve like Peter's, ripped from the collar downwards, revealing a small part of her cleavage, messily tugged into a pair of tight black jeans, the earth style finished off in a knee high pair of Doc Martin boots. While shaved off on one side, the shoulder long strains of her wavy amber hair fell down, covering one side of her face. Peter's eyes were glued on her frame, she looked like she emerged from one of his many dreams about home. He couldn't believe he was seeing someone so beautiful and so strangely familiar in a place like this. His heart raced in his chest, and he didn't want to but couldn't help but stare at her.
"Hi, what brings you guys here?" you asked the Guardians, a mischievous glint in your eyes at the sight of this weird bunch of strangers, especially the human.
Rocket stepped passed Peter, kicking him chuckling as he addressed you directly.
"We need parts for our ship, M class spacecraft," he said, trying to keep a straight face at Quill's drooling love struck expression. You nodded, a smirk playing at the corners of your lips.
"I might have just what you need or even more," you said, walking towards a shelf full of mechanical parts.
As you bent down to push a piece of machinery aside, Peter couldn't help but stare at your well formed butt, the outlines perfectly highlighted by the tight fabric of your jeans. He felt ridiculous, staring at you like a hormonal teenager but he felt like he was falling in love with, not just your behind, but also you right then and there. You had this special something, a weird spell engulfing Peter's mind completely, rendering him completely defenseless. He still wasn't sure if you could be the earthling the Ravagers had mistaken him for earlier but everything about your outfit and the music coming from that old radio just screamed Earth to Peter and he would know, he was born there which technically made him the sole expert on this matter. You led them to your little junk yard behind the workshop, sifting through the pile when the two Ravagers emerged from behind a pile of spare parts.
“Earthling who names herself Star Born, you come with us!”, they yelled at you, merely earning a chuckle as you tapped on a device wrapped around your wrist.
“Oh this is gonna be good, watch this”, you cackled as you poked Peter, looking up to the intruders, “hey! Why don't you make like a tree and get out of here?”
The song from inside the workshop echoed louder now as the Ravagers ran towards you.
Every time I think that I'm
The only one who's lonely someone calls on me
And every now and then I spend
My time at rhyme and verse and curse those faults in me
As they were almost close enough to fight you, what looked like a glowing pink skateboard flew towards them and hit one of them in the head, before gracefully turning around midair to collide brutally with the other Ravager's face, knocking him out coldly.
And then along comes
MaryMary,
MaryThen along comes Mary
Mary, Mary
You leaped over, activating the rocket attached to your left boot, swinging around in the air, your right foot hitting the last standing Ravager's face hard, throwing him flat on the ground.
“And does she wanna give me kicks”, you sang along to the song as you landed back on your feet, grinning at the Guardians, your hips moving to the tunes.
“Why does this woman remind me of Quill, just with the skills”, Rocket asked, mouth agape in astonished confusion.
“Was that...is that...”, Peter stuttered, walking past you to grab the skateboard, “a flarking hoverboard?!” You laughed, bathing in the glorious moment that someone finally recognised the device you built.
“Yes, I tried to build the exact same as in Back to the Future II”, you beamed, “see it even has the Mattel logo on top. It's just a prototype for now though.”
“Oh my...hang on! There is a second movie?!”, Peter looked up at you, his eyes glowing.
“Oh no... here we go”, Gamora rolled her eyes.
“There are three movies, dude”, you laughed, “have you been living under a rock?”
“I-I-I was abducted when I was eight years old, 88, I-I didn't know”, Quill stammered, nervously fiddling on the edges of the skateboard before handing it back to you.
"Ooooh you missed the best. Sweet 90s baby, hell yeah”, you winked at him, throwing the board on the ground where it hovered a few centimeters above the floor before shoving it away.
You had been a space drifter for years after leaving Earth, trying to make ends meet before you eventually landed on Knowhere. It was a tough life, but it was what felt closest to a home, clinging to what would make it all worthwhile, your earthly treasures, the simple stupid gadgets that reminded you of a more calm time of your life. Neither Peter nor you knew at this very moment how important that connection would be, but the delicate foundations of a very important and fond friendship were laid on the day of this fateful random encounter. You whispered your name into Peter's ears.
“But you can call me Star Born”, your hand playfully tapped his shoulder.
“Peter Quill, also called Star Lord”, he grabbed your hand, swiftly kissing the backside of it.
“Nobody calls him that”, Gamora walked into the workshop, waving her hands dismissively.
“Yeah, nobody even knows his real name”, Rocket cackled, sitting on Groot's shoulder, “we need these wires and relays”, he held up a small box, “how much?”
“You know what?”, a finger moved to your lips, your brows furrowing in a thoughtful expression, “if I can borrow your Earth boy here for the rest of the day, I'll give you the parts for free”, you proposed hesitantly, almost sure that they would never agree to such an offer.
“Yeah alright, you can even keep him forever if you want to”, Gamora laughed, leaving the workshop without even glimpsing at Quill.
“I am Groot”, the tree shrugged and followed them, Rocket still sitting on his shoulder, turning his head to wave a middle finger at Peter.
“The vicious vermin speaks the truth”, Drax patted Quill's shoulder, “I'm sorry Peter Quill, but you will have to stay with the weird lady.”
A chuckle escaped your lips at the sound of Peter's annoyed huff, your fingers wrapping around his wrist, directing him to the desk in the corner of the workshop. You rummaged through a drawer and pulled out a small square electronic device. It somehow reminded Peter of his tape player, but instead of a cassette, a tiny floppy disc stuck inside.
"Check this out," you said proudly, pressing a button on the device, handing the headphones over to him, “waaaay better than your prehistoric device.”
To his amazement, he immediately recognised the track that started playing.
“Footloose?!”, his eyes darted to yours.
“Of course! Best dance movie of all times!”, a smile spread across your lips, “during my years moving from one planet to another, I kept telling others that we have this legend on my home planet where the great hero Kevin Bacon teaches an entire city full of people with sticks up their butts that, dancing, well, is the greatest thing there is.”
Peter stood in the middle of this messy workshop on Knowhere, feeling utterly abandoned by his crewmates and friends, leaving him behind, without a second thought, to get the parts to repair his ship for free while he was left to fend for himself. And yet he felt ecstatic, finding someone, not only from his home planet, but also someone with a weird humour that matched his own perfectly, you even twisted the plot of his favourite movie into the same silly tale. As the two of you chatted, he couldn't shake off the feeling that this encounter might have been more than mere coincidence. He never wasted any thoughts on the concept of fate or destiny, but this simply seemed too perfect to be a mere chance. As you continued sharing your memories of Earth, realising that, even though you experienced the planet during two completely different yet similar decades, Peter found himself more and more drawn to you. You were smart, obviously smarter than him, although he'd never admit that in front of the racoon, and definitely funny enough to keep up with his jokes, and by the end of the day, he couldn't shake the feeling that he had known you his entire life. He had scoffed at the ridiculous thought of love at first sight before, yet now he couldn't deny the way his heart raced as he looked into your eyes, that seemed like liquid pools of indigo threatening to drown him. As the day wore on, the two of you found yourselves wandering through the many shops and stalls on Knowhere, your giggles mixing into the steady noise of the bustling marketplace. Finally, as the evening grew late and the two of you reached the Milano, you turned to him, your hand resting on his chest, your mind loosing track for a moment as you felt the warmth radiating through the fabric of his long-sleeve. "I have to go now, Star Lord. But I think we should do this again...sometime." Peter's mind to screamed at him, to do something, kiss you, grab you and hold you back, asking you to join the Guardians, traveling through space with them but his body seemed detached, sabotaging every single wish whirling around his busy brain by simply standing there watching you walk away, his heart feeling the heavy crush of an unfair reality. With every other woman he randomly met during his adventures, he managed to hold up his smooth flirty demeanour which not only ended in him waking up in bed next to said woman but very often also in a lot of trouble. But you rendered him defenseless, all his careless flirts suddenly dissolved into thin air around you. You were more to him, his heart already clinging to you for dear life, leaving no room for anything else. He knew he had to see you again. As he made his way back to the Milano, he frowned at the image of you taking up every little space in his mind, ignoring Rocket's taunting as he went straight to his bunk, slumping down on the bed. Days turned into weeks, and Peter asked around in every port they landed at, hoping to find you after Cosmo told him that you left Knowhere one week after him. But it felt all in vain, it was as if you had vanished into thin air. Finally, as he sat alone on the bridge of his ship while the others roamed the local market, his fingers instinctively went into one of the bottom pockets of his jacket where they found a small piece of paper tucked and neatly folded. He unfolded the paper, not remembering when he ever would have put it there, let alone when he ever held real paper in his hands after he was abducted from Earth.
Meet me at the Quarantine zone in the Andromeda galaxy. See you soon Earthling.
